La Liga: FC Barcelona 1-1 Valencia CF: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing draw against Valencia.

A quiet night for the Chilean shot-stopper, who must have been disappointed to see his clean sheet streak brought to a premature end by a rather toothless Valencia offense. It took over a half of action for Bravo to even be called into action -- and he was equal to their efforts when called upon, until Santi Mina's ferocious shot left him with no chance. Que sera sera, I guess.

Dani Alves

Arron says: 7.5

After an inconsistent few months, Alves seems to have found his form once again -- it started with a superb showing in El Clasico, continued into last week against Real Sociedad and then culminated with a wonder goal against Villanovense. Alves didn't disappoint yesterday either; offensively he was good and had a few wonderful moments -- but with Barça favouring their left, he didn't get all too many opportunities to shine.

Javier Mascherano

Minutes played: 90

Pass Accuracy: 92%
Tackles: 0
Interceptions: 3

Aerial Duels Won: 1
Fouls: 1

Arron says: 6.5

Probably our worst performer on the night, at least in my opinion; Mascherano had a tough time of it on the few times he was challenged. The Argentine defender picked up a yellow with a cynical foul when he was beat on the counter, and he struggled for the goal as well up against Paco Alcacer. Nothing to lose too much sleep about though, these things happen.

Gerard Pique
6.1

Another Blaugrana defender who had a quiet night: Gerard Pique wasn't called upon all too often, and he was "so-so" when he did have things to do. Not bad, but nor was he quite as dominant as usual.

Jordi Alba
6.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 79
Passes: 72
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Arron says: 7.5

Combining with Neymar must be quite an easy task -- but Alba does it better than probably anyone in the world; well, leaving Lionel Messi aside. Alba knew when to hold his run, and when to push on; he also knew when to stretch the field, and when to run narrow. The end result was a difficult night for Ruben Vezo -- although as Barça couldn't take advantage it was a hollow achievement.

Sergio Busquets
6.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 109
Passes: 101

Aerial Duels Won: 7
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 2

Sam says: 7.0

Combined with Andrés Iniesta, Busquets ran the midfield for Barça. Completing 101 passes with an accuracy of 87% meant Valencia rarely had a sniff of the ball. A slight decrease in the defensive contribution but this can be explained by Valencia’s reluctance to push forward. Not really at fault for the home side’s goal as a big lob forward bypassed him.

Ivan Rakitić
5.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 74
Passes: 60
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0
Turnovers: 1
Key Passes: 1
Fouls Won: 0
Interceptions: 4

Sam says: 7.5

Arguably Barça’s best midfielder during the game as he balanced defence with attack. He managed two shots himself, both off target, as well as setting up a good goalscoring chance. At the other end of the field, he made one tackle and two interceptions which helped restrict Valencia to as few as chances as possible. He didn’t string as many passes together as his midfield partners but he did go for more adventurous efforts.

Andres Iniesta
6.8
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 114
Passes: 102
Pass Accuracy: 89%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Fouls Won: 1
Turnovers: 2
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 1
Tackles: 3

Sam says: 7.0

Iniesta made the joint most tackles and second most interceptions of anyone on the field which showed how high Barça were pressing when Valencia were on the ball. After they retrieved the ball, Iniesta was the man in the middle looking to make the side tick. Despite not always making the killer pass that we’ve become accustomed to, he rarely lost it. Making over 100 passes with an accuracy of 89%.

Lionel Messi
6.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 89
Passes: 59
Pass Accuracy: 83%
Shots/Shots on Target: 7/3
Turnovers: 5
Successful Dribbles: 3
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 2
Tackles: 1

Sonia says: 7.5

Messi frustratingly missed some opportunities early in the game. However, he showed his excellence despite not yet being back to top form. Messi assisted Suarez for Barca’s only goal of the match with a pass that was one of the only highlights of the match. Overall, he was very closely marked throughout the match and has yet to regain full fitness, which stifled him greatly. Although he visibly struggled, he is still as deadly as ever; the match may not have ended ideally but Messi is not the only one at fault.

Luis Suarez
7.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 38
Passes: 24
Pass Accuracy: 71%
Shots/Shots on Target: 4/2
Fouls Won: 2
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 4
Interceptions: 2

Sonia says: 7.0

Suarez, like the rest of the team, had an unlucky first half. He missed a volley; to say that the spectacle was a disappointment is an understatement. His behavior was also not something to be praised, though he did manage to score when coming off of a period during which he was acting especially irrationally. Ultimately, he does get credit for Barca’s one goal and can’t be criticised too much, as everyone playing alongside Suarez wasn’t all that much better.

Neymar
7.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 94
Passes: 65
Pass Accuracy: 77%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0
Successful Dribbles: 9
Key Passes: 4
Fouls Won: 3
Turnovers: 5
Tackles: 0

Sonia says: 8.0

Neymar was great against Valencia. He is showing the world just how good he is this season. He missed some easy sitters in the first half, unfortunately, but the problem was not unique to him and he is not the only one to blame. However, Neymar’s passing is on another level this season; his key passes meant that he was arguably the best on the pitch.

The Team 6.2
Passes: 755
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Shots/Shots on Target: 18/7
Tackles: 10
Aerial Battles Won: 71%
Fouls Won/Committed: 13/15

Sonia says: 6.5

The team was overall just not at its best. Notably, MSN and Busi were off, and the defence was not great (especially Pique). The finishing in the first half was poor; just one early chance in the net would have been enough for Barca to get the full 3 points. The match was rather sloppily played, but it was still not what would be considered a disaster; 1 point against Valencia is far from the end of the world. Hopefully the team will rebound strongly with some wins; if nothing else, Barca is still at the top of the table.

Luis Enrique
6.5

Kevin says: 6.5

The manager put out his what is becoming considered his marquee starting 11 and will have been pleased to see them garner 71% of possession away at Estadio de Mestalla. His team were wasteful in front of goal which, however frustrating it may have been for fans to watch, must have been infuriating for the boss. Oddly neglected to introduce any substitutes despite much-maligned duo Sandro and Munir helping themselves to a feast of goals in the midweek cup fixture, their renewed vigor may well have paid off. By and large his side dominated but were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal. Having addressed, to some extent, the recent defensive issues, Luis Enrique must now stress the importance of ruthlessness in front of goal going forward.  Little slip ups like these may end up costing the manager

Bostjan says: Neymar

No real surprises here as Neymar was the runaway winner. Coming behind him were the "other two" members of the MSN trio, with Suarez finishing in second (27%) and Messi coming in third (11%)
