Can Liverpool Star Philippe Coutinho Fit in at Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona?

If a signing is to take place, Coutinho’s role is not obvious.

Philippe Coutinho is considered one of the biggest names on Barcelona’s summer wish list, but there is one big problem with the hypothetical signing: where would he play?

The Liverpool star tends to play as either a forward or attacking midfielder, and primarily on the left side. Assuming new boss Ernesto Valverde retains Barcelona’s 4-3-3 template, where does Coutinho play if he arrives at the Camp Nou?

Well, the place in the left side of midfield suits him best, but that’s Andres Iniesta’s spot. As much as Iniesta will be rested and Coutinho would get plenty of time there... when it came to the big games... el Clasico, cup finals, the Champions League... where does Coutinho go?

To the right side of midfield trying to provide defensive cover a la Ivan Rakitic? Is he willing to do that, or even suited for it?

It seems that right now Barcelona more clearly need a replacement for Xavi on the right, being that Xavi has not been with the team for two years now. Iniesta is still there.

This is one of the biggest questions about a possible Coutinho transfer.

Barcelona Target Jean Michael Seri of Nice Could Be Heading to Paris Saint-Germain

According to new reports.

Barcelona are pushing for one of the French league’s biggest stars, but one of its biggest teams could land him first. We are talking about Jean Michael Seri, the midfielder who impressed playing for Nice last season. Paris Saint-Germain are known to be interested in him as well, which could result in a bidding war.

According to a report in Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have been in touch with Seri’s people and are very interested in striking a deal. It remains to be seen if new coach Ernesto Valverde ratifies the option.

Seri, who might cost less than 20 million euro, is seen as a much cheaper alternative to PSG’s Marco Verratti, who could cost 90 million or more - if he is on sale at all.

But it’s PSG themselves who could spoil the operation for Barça, as L’Equipe reports the Parisians are keen on Seri either as a replacement of or in addition to Verratti. Other teams are lining up for the Ivory Coast international’s services, as well.

PSG are said to be stepping up attempts to pry Seri away from Nice as the interest of other teams such as Barcelona becomes known.

Five things Ernesto Valverde needs to do at Barcelona

There is work to be done ahead of next season

Ernesto Valverde takes charge of Barcelona after a season which has seen the club finish second best in La Liga and comfortably beaten by Juventus in Europe. The 53-year-old has plenty of work to do and we’ve had a look at where he might start...

Fix the defence

Barcelona looked far from comfortable defensively last season and Luis Enrique’s switch to a three-man defence was hardly an overwhelming success. We even had Andre Gomes at right-back in the Copa del Rey final. Will Valverde keep that system, or more likely, will he return to a back four? Either way Barcelona really need to strengthen at the back, a right-back is a priority and quite possibly a centre-back too. Jordi Alba’s future needs clarifying and a back-up goalkeeper may also be required should Jasper Cillessen decide he’s has enough of the Barca bench. On the bright side, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has renewed after a great season last time out and still just 25, looks to have a long and bright future ahead of him at Camp Nou and Samuel Umtiti has looked a brilliant buy since joining from Lyon.

Strengthen the squad

The fact that Real Madrid have built an incredible squad, and managed to keep most of them happy this season, under Zinedine Zidane has only highlighted Barca’s lack of strength in depth. The club have not bought well in the last two seasons and really need to rectify that summer. A defender, a full-back, a midfielder or two and even a winger seem to be on the agenda and we’re all more than familiar with the names that have regularly been linked with a move to Barca. Hector Bellerin, Davinson Sanchez, Marco Verratti and/or Jean Seri would all do nicely. Meanwhile, Gerard Deulofeu looks set to return and those rumours about a move for Philippe Coutinho refuse to go away.

Re-establish an identity

One of the main complaints about Barcelona’s football under Luis Enrique was the perceived loss of identity, the lack of a clear playing style and it’s something Valverde needs to address. The new coach needs to decide how he wants his side to play and get them playing that way from the off, and to be honest, they need to be winning too or the pressure he will come under, rightly or wrongly, will be just ridiculous. To do that he will need to bring in the right players, Barca still lack a proper replacement for Xavi while this could well be Andres Iniesta’s last season. Currently there is an over-reliance on Messi, Suarez and Neymar and getting the midfield right may just be his most difficult job.

Sell well

Barcelona will need to raise funds this summer and also have several players who have no future at the club and need to be shipped out. Jeremy Mathieu should be the first out of the door and recent reports have suggested a whole host of players have uncertain futures including: Lucas Digne, Arda Turan, Denis Suarez, Aleix Vidal, Rafinha and Paco Alcacer. Javier Mascherano and Andres Iniesta are also nearing the end of their current deals and while Lionel Messi is clearly going nowhere, official confirmation of his new contract would be nice, if you could hurry the board up on that front too please Ernesto?

Look to La Masia

While Barcelona will need to dip into the transfer market this summer, Valverde should also ensure La Masia is not being forgotten about. The path from La Masia to the first team seems to have dried up recently and while no-one is expecting a whole host of players to come through, Valverde needs to make sure that the best young players can, and are, making the step up. Carles Alena, Lee Seung-Woo, Jordi Mboula and Oriol Busquets are all highly-rated and tipped to shine for the Blaugrana - will they get the opportunity to prove themselves in the first team under Valverde?

Barcelona 2016/17 Review: Goal of the Season

Was it Lionel Messi or someone else who scored the goal of the season?

Looking back on the 2016-17 season, we’ll remember some iconic moments and some iconic goals. Which was your favorite? For me, there are three options that stick out the most.

Top 3

Lionel Messi vs. Real Madrid (Away, La Liga)

Lionel Messi finished off a brilliant team goal in El Clasico after an end-to-end team move in added time. Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets worked the ball out of their own corner, Sergi Roberto drove forward with purpose, Andre Gomes played on Jordi Alba, Alba cut it back to Messi and... bam. Goal. 3-2 and a memorable win.

Paco Alcacer vs. Deportivo Alaves (Copa del Rey Final)

Lionel Messi was the architect of yet another breathtaking Copa final goal. His dribbling and vision are simply head and shoulders above everyone else. Paco’s positioning and finish are not bad, either.

Sergi Roberto vs. Paris Saint-Germain (Champions League R16)

Don’t act like you don’t know. Only thing I’ll add is there is besides the dramatic circumstance, it’s a great goal. Neymar’s assist with his left is pinpoint, while Roberto’s delicate finish at full stretch is impeccable.

Honorable Mentions

Lionel Messi vs. Celta Vigo (Home, La Liga)

How he goes from his back to goal far away from the box, to scoring, is one of those magic tricks Messi always seems to pull off.

Luis Suarez vs. Atletico Madrid (Copa del Rey Semifinals)

Suarez picks the ball around midfield after a Javier Mascherano tackle. He skips past a player, then pokes the ball forward and blows past the last defender before slotting it home.

Neymar vs. Paris Saint-Germain (Champions League R16)

Certainly a more beautiful goal than Roberto’s, but that one edges this one out on being more iconic and important.

Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba vs. Espanyol (Home, La Liga)

Lionel Messi scored neither of these goals but he was the creator. Those dribbles to set them up were ridiculous.

How Would You Reshape the Barcelona Squad?

Let’s hear your thoughts!

Barcelona has a big summer ahead with Ernesto Valverde coming in as the new coach and Robert Fernandez in the last year of his contract as sporting director. There is a need to shift dead wood while revitalizing the squad, all without spending too extravagantly. Can you do it? Let’s take a look. I’ll give my impression but tell me where you disagree!

Goalkeepers

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen: Keep.

Jasper Cillissen: Keep. He did a good job as the second keeper and there's no reason to change.

Jordi Masip: It's his choice. Masip is good for a third keeper but he won't want to stay there forever. If he leaves, promote Jose Suarez from the B team.

Signings: None.

Defenders

Gerard Pique: Keep.

Samuel Umtiti: Keep.

Javier Mascherano: Keep, though I’m not as sure. His wages will be high but he’s still a good player and a great influence on the locker room.

Jeremy Mathieu: Sell. Sorry Mathieu, but your time at Barça is up.

Marlon: Promote. He’s ready.

Thomas Vermaelen: Sell.

Signings: None unless Mascherano is sold.

Fullbacks

Jordi Alba: Keep.

Aleix Vidal: Keep. Not sure how he will do coming back from the injury, but early signs are encouraging.

Lucas Digne: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) He’s a good enough player to be part of the squad, but there’s no need to refuse big offers.

Douglas: Sell at any price. Even the memes are old now.

Signings: One is desperately needed, though who exactly that is... is a tougher question.

Midfielders

Sergio Busquets: Keep.

Andres Iniesta: Keep.

Ivan Rakitic: Keep. Rakitic is still a reliable player and a good soldier to stay on the bench. He’s also a safety valve as he can deputize in all three midfield spots fairly well.

Andre Gomes: Sell if necessary to fund a purchase. Gomes is finally starting to find his groove so it seems cruel, but the team needs funds and space in the squad.

Denis Suarez: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) He’s young and deserves another shot.

Arda Turan: Sell for big money. Hopefully Chinese teams still want him.

Sergi Roberto: Keep. He’s a good jack-of-all trades that can do a job. I don’t see him as a future star, exactly, but worth keeping around.

Rafinha: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) This might be his last chance at being a Barcelona player. He’s a fine squad player when fit. He’s just not fit often.

Sergi Samper: Loan unless enough players leave. He’s only 22 and needs more experience.

Signings: This is the other big signing. There are a lot of options but Barcelona will have to spend to find a suitable player. Marco Verratti would be the best choice, but the chances of prying him from Paris Saint-Germain aren’t great. This is the toughest position since at least three in that list probably need to be shifted out, yet all of them have value.

Forwards

Lionel Messi: Keep.

Neymar: Keep.

Luis Suarez: Keep.

Paco Alcacer: Sell if necessary. If an offer comes along, Barcelona should take it. But I don’t think a good enough one will. I think his value will increase after he settles down at Barcelona, so one more year to evaluate could be a good decision.

Munir El-Haddadi: Loan again, unless Paco is sold. He’s only 21.

Cristian Tello: Sell.

Signings: From an economic standpoint, signing Gerard Deulofeu just to have as a piece to later sell might make sense. Other than that, not much is needed.

Overall

Without hedging, here’s what I’m currently thinking.

Sell: Mathieu, Vermaelen, Douglas, Gomes, Turan, Tello.

Loan: Samper and Munir

Buy: One fullback, one midfielder, and maybe Deulofeu purely for economic reasons.

Now tell me what you think should happen!

Barcelona rumors: Valverde wants Herrera, Laporte & Bellerin & Seri talks planned

The new boss already knows what he wants this summer

Ernesto Valverde hasn’t even been presented as Barcelona boss yet but already the rumour mill has gone into overdrive with who’s leaving and more importantly who could come in…

Valverde wants Herrera, Laporte & Bellerin

Valverde has already informed the Barca board he wants Ander Herrera, Aymeric Laporte and Hector Bellerin this summer, according to OK Diario.

The former Athletic boss will play 4-3-3 and is keen to strengthen the midfield and the defence.

He’s also willing to allow Jordi Alba, Ivan Rakitic, Rafinha, Arda Turan and Paco Alacer to leave while Aleix Vidal, Jeremy Mathieu, Lucas Digne and Denis Suarez could also be on their way out of Camp Nou.

Herrera wants to stay at Man Utd

Herrera is likely to disappoint Valverde, however, according to The Telegraph who report that the midfielder will turn down Barcelona to stay at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old has become vital to Jose Mourinho’s team and is expected to begin talks with the Red Devils over a contract extension before the start of the new Premier League season.

Barca set for Seri talks

So if not Herrera then who? Well, Barcelona and PSG are set to begin talks with Nice midfielder Jean Seri in the next few days, so say RMC Sport.

Both clubs are keen on the 25-year-old who is ready to consider his future and has already admitted he would find it difficult to turn down a move to Camp Nou if the club were to spring his €40 million release clause.

Galatasaray want Mathieu, Lyon & Inter eye Digne

One man who is certainly heading for the exit door this summer is Jeremy Mathieu with Galatasaray keen on the central defender according to Sport.

The defender has a year to run on his contract and although Barca would rather receive a small fee they could let him leave for free.

Sport also report that Lucas DIgne is wanted by Lyon on loan with an option to buy although they face competition from Inter who have already made the full-back an offer.

Iniesta: Valverde is a good choice for Barcelona

The midfielder is backing the new man

Andres Iniesta has given his full backing to Ernesto Valverde after he replaced Luis Enrique as Barcelona boss on Tuesday.

Valverde is due to be officially presented on Thursday and his appointment has been met with a somewhat mixed reaction from Barca supporters.

Iniesta, however, is confident the club have made the right choice and is looking forward to working with the 53-year-old.

“He is a coach that I like a lot," he said via Sport. "He has done a great job at all his previous clubs and I think that at Barcelona he will take a big step forward in his career.

“I’m sure we will keep fighting for everything. I hope he has a lot of luck. I don’t know him but I’ve spoken to him on a few occasions. Pozanco [I know], the fitness coach from his time at Barcelona."

Iniesta also explained that the players had not been informed about who would replace Lucho and only found out about Valverde at the same time as everybody else.

“The club didn’t ask the captains their opinion, or anybody," he added. "The decision is theirs and the truth is that until today, nobody told us officially that Valverde would be the coach. I think he’s a good choice.”

If he’s good enough for Iniesta, then he’s good enough for me, and like him or not, he’s now the man in charge and deserves the support from all the fans as we begin a new era.

Ernesto Valverde is a great fit for Barca but can he cope with the pressure? | ESPN
It's important to establish, for the purists who'll be gagging to know, that while "el Txingurri" (it's Basque for "ant," an affectionate nickname earned for his diminutive size and terrific work ethic) played under Cruyff, this is by no means a return to the Cruyff/Guardiola philosophy in its truest meaning.

Who is FC Barcelona’s Newest Coach, Ernesto Valverde?

Time to meet the new boss.

Ernesto Valverde left Athletic Club Bilbao after a four year spell to become FC Barcelona’s newest coach, taking the reigns from Luis Enrique. Who is he? Let’s dive in.

He was born in Viandar de la Vera, in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura in 1964. As an infant, he moved to the Basque country. Eventually, he made his way to the Deportivo Alaves youth system, the club which gave him his debut in the Segunda Division, before moving on to the Basque team Sestao Sport Club, also in Segunda.

He eventually wound up at RCD Espanyol, where he made his La Liga debut. After two years, he moved crosstown to FC Barcelona, where he would stay a further two years. During that time, he won a Copa del Rey and an UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He was not frequently used under Johan Cruyff, in large part due to injury problems, though Cruyff revealed later that he always liked him.

In 1990, he moved to Athletic, being eligible to play under the club’s Basque-only policy due to having lived as a youngster in the Basque country. There he spent the biggest chunk of his playing career, becoming an important player for the Bilbao-based club. He finished his playing career with one season at Mallorca.

As a manager, he began as an assistant at Athletic, then coached Bilbao Athletic (their B team) before taking the reigns of the senior side in 2003.

He did a good job in his first season, getting into the UEFA Cup thanks to a fifth place finish. In his second season, his team finished a respectable 9th. He left after disagreements with the club president, Fernando Lamikiz.

After taking a years’ sabbatical, he coached another team he used to play for: Espanyol, who had finished 15th previously. He took them to a comfortable 11th place finish, Notably, he took Espanyol to the UEFA Cup Final as well, where they lost in dramatic fashion. Despite having equalized in added time a man down against Sevilla, they lost on penalties. In his second and last year at Espanyol, his team finished 12th.

He took over Greek side Olympiacos FC for a year, winning the domestic double. He was not renewed due to financial issues despite his success and signed for Villarreal back in Spain after Manuel Pellegrini was signed by Real Madrid.

He was considered a disappointment at Villarreal, who finished fifth the previous season. They had a very sluggish start and though they improved as the season went on, Valverde was sacked midway. His team was 9th when he was sacked and ended the season 10th.

He returned to Greece to get his career back on track. Olympiacos failed to win the league while Valverde was gone, but they won it again the season he came back, and once more for the next year Valverde managed them. He also won the Greek Cup once more.

Once again he returned to Spanish football in 2012, this time as a replacement for Mauricio Pellegrino after he was sacked during the season by Valencia. Los che were in 12th place in December, and Valverde was tasked with bringing them up to European places.

It was at this time that his former boss, Cruyff, praised him: "It's a great decision by Valencia. When he was a player, he was very smart, and he always showed interest in learning. He is one of the most accomplished and promising managers in Spanish football."

Valverde backed up the Dutchman’s high praise with a job well done, finishing the season in fifth place. During his time as coach, only Barcelona and Real Madrid were ahead of him in terms of points. However, he decided not to renew his contract at Mestalla.

He was appointed Athletic Club manager once more in 2013. The lions had just come off a middling season under Marcelo Bielsa, who the season before had brought them to the Europa League and Copa del Rey final. But in Bielsa’s second year, they finished 12th and were eliminated very early from both the Europa League and the cup.

Valverde’s first season at Athletic was an unmitigated success as they finished fourth and got into the Champions League. His second season saw them finish a respectable 7th in the league but return to the Copa del Rey final, where they were undone by Luis Enrique's treble-winning Barcelona and a Lionel Messi goal for the ages.

They got their revenge in due time, and how. Valverde’s men faced Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup, where they thrashed them in the first leg 4-0. The second leg finished 1-1, and at last, Athletic had a trophy. - their first in 31 years. They also had another strong finish in La Liga - 5th. In this past season, his fourth and final, Valverde’s Athletic finished 7th again.

Valverde was on Barcelona’s radar for a very long time and had previously been considered when Tata Martino left and the job eventually went to Luis Enrique. Now, he finally has his chance.

So, we all know Josep Guardiola went by Pep. Francesc Vilanova went by Tito. Gerardo Martino went by Tata. Luis Enrique Martinez went by Lucho. What cute, simple nickname does Ernesto Valverde prefer? Txingurri.

Come again? It’s the Basque word for “ant.”

FC Barcelona 2016/17 in Review: Game of the Season

Reviewing the best games of Barcelona’s 2016/17 season.

The 2016/17 season is in the books for FC Barcelona, and while it may not have been the most successful year in the Catalans’ history, Luis Enrique’s men again played some dazzling football at numerous points of the season.

In this first installment of the Season in Review, we will look at three of the best games Barcelona played this season, in the end, you will decide which one of the three contestants will be crowned Game of the Season. Even though many consider this Barcelona season a disappointment, picking just three games was a very difficult task, and a list of honorable mentions could’ve been twice as long as this list will be.

But without further ado, here are the three nominees for Game of the Season (in chronological order)

1. Barcelona 3-0 Sevilla (Supercopa de España 2nd Leg, 17 August 2016)

Barcelona came into the game in a commanding position, leading 2-0 after the first leg played at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, but Sevilla under Jorge Sampaoli often showed a never-say-die attitude. But Barcelona showed their winning mentality and quickly added to their lead through the in-form Arda Turan. Around the half-hour mark it became interesting as Sevilla were awarded a penalty kick, but Claudio Bravo excellently saved Vicente Iborra’s strike. Sevilla remained dangerous, but Barcelona would not buckle under pressure, adding two goals in the second half, including a stunning Arda long-range strike, to secure the first trophy of the new season.

Highlights:

2. Barcelona 6-1 Paris Saint-Germain (Champions League Round of 16 2nd Leg, 8 March 2017)

Much has been said about this match - the biggest comeback in European football history - and rightfully so. Barcelona were absolutely hammered in the first leg in Paris, earning a 4-0 loss, seemingly making the return leg a mere formality, but the Catalans, led by Neymar, had different plans.

Slowly but surely, Barcelona started to chip away at PSG’s lead, halving PSG’s advantage by half-time through goals from Luis Suarez and an Layvin Kurzawa own goal. Then Lionel Messi made it a one goal game from a penalty, but disaster struck when Edinson Cavani scored the all-important away goal. Barcelona suddenly needed three more, and with time running out the tie was all but decided. Then Neymar took center stage, first curling a free kick in the 88th minute to provide a spark. Three minutes later he converted a penalty to draw the two teams level, but with PSG in front due to the away goal. Five minutes of added time were running out, and with everybody forward Neymar provided one last hopeful ball in front where Sergi Roberto poked the ball into the back of the net to complete the most unlikeliest of comebacks.

Highlights:

3. Real Madrid 2-3 Barcelona (La Liga Round 33, 23 April 2017)

Barcelona’s title hopes were fading fast and to have any hope of a late season turnaround the Catalans had to win at the Santiago Bernabeu. And win they did - in dramatic fashion, and while it may not have been a vintage Barcelona display, under the circumstances, it was massive. Barcelona found themselves in a hole after Casemiro opened the scoring, setting up another Barcelona comeback. Messi leveled the score shortly thereafter, before Ivan Rakitić rocketed Barcelona in the lead midway through the second half. Playing with a man advantage, Barcelona were unable to protect the lead, but in the final seconds of the game Messi scored in brilliant fashion to set up a neck and neck race for the remainder of the season, but Barcelona didn’t get any help they desperately needed.

Highlights:

These are your three nominees, please use the poll below to decide the winner. Use the comments section to voice your opinion on the nominations, your vote, omissions from the top three, etc.

Barcelona players send great goodbye messages to Luis Enrique

Controversial Luis Enrique Leaves Barcelona with a Raft of Trophies

After three seasons.

The Luis Enrique era is over after the latest Copa del Rey triumph. Ernesto Valverde of Athletic Club Bilbao will by every account be named his successor. But before we get swept up in the plans for the future, let’s talk about the era we just completed.

It’s sometimes overlooked that Luis Enrique was an important player before he was a manager. He spent 8 seasons at Barcelona, where he developed a reputation for being a jack-of-all trades and a reliable goalscorer. He also captained Barça and was one of their best players of the mid 90s to mid 00s.

After retirement, he became a manager. Lucho was a coach linked with Barcelona often because he had been highly successful as B team coach. He brought them back to the Segunda Division after an 11 year absence. After, he left to start a project at AS Roma in 2011, hoping to export the Barcelona model to Italy. Here he had a middling season while he tried to reformat the side. His team finished 7th, about par for Roma in those times (in the preceding season they finished 6th, in the next one 6th again.)

He left after one year and wouldn’t return until 2013, when he took over Spanish side Celta Vigo. Here he achieved his first success as first team manager. The year before Lucho arrived, the Galicians had finished two points above the drop thanks in large part due to top scorer Iago Aspas. When Lucho arrived, Celta sold Aspas to Liverpool. Yet Lucho’s men got into the top half of the table. They finished the season on a flurry of good results, four wins out of five... including a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid that ended Los Blancos' title hopes.

For his good work at Celta and longtime association with Barça, Luis Enrique became the Catalans’ manager in 2014. His first year started off very strongly but almost fell apart at the midway point. A loss in el Clasico and a memorable defeat to Real Sociedad started talks of a crisis that ended in the sacking of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Despite the doom and gloom, the team was not doing all that bad. They won their Champions League group, were in striking distance of the league, and were progressing in the cup. However, that shock seemed to jolt them into form, and from then on, they looked nigh-unbeatable.

Finishing with just the second treble in history - and becoming the first club to have two - was a phenomenal success for Lucho. More so when you consider his perilous Champions League path, which included Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage, Manchester City, PSG again, Bayern Munich, and Juventus.

His follow up season was almost as successful, with a domestic double, the European Supercup and the Club World Cup, and an iconic 4-0 win over Real Madrid. But Barcelona fell short in the Champions League, where they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid.

In this past season, it was another reduction in the number of trophies: just the cup this time. They were close in the league, missing out by just three points. But the Champions League campaign was chaotic. Yes, it produced one of the most memorable comebacks of all time, when they defeated PSG 6-1 in the second leg, 6-5 on aggregate. But the fact is they lost to PSG and Juve by appalling scorelines away from home (0-4 and 0-3). Against the Turin based club, they could not overturn it.

Luis Enrique was criticized for a sometimes confusing youth policy. He gave playing time to Munir El-Haddadi and Sandro Ramirez but both were shipped off for the expensive Paco Alcacer, possibly with little improvement in the process. Marc Bartra was let go partly in favor of veteran Jeremy Mathieu. Andre Gomes was bought with Denis Suarez, Rafinha, and Sergi Samper already in the team. Alex Grimaldo was never given a chance while Lucas Digne was bought.

Equally, he did oversee the renaissance of Sergi Roberto and brought along Marlon, who looks like a good player. Rafinha has Lucho’s fingerprints all over him, having coached him in the B team, brought him to Celta, then brought him back to Barcelona. Luis Enrique gave several young men their debuts, though it remains to be seen how many have a long term future at the Camp Nou.

A fitness freak, Luis Enrique emphasized maintaining physical condition with a very aggressive rotation policy, which sometimes landed him in trouble after fielding under-strength sides. He had a prickly personality that rubbed some the wrong way, but he was also a very witty guy that the players seemed to eventually warm up to.

There were also complaints about playing style and tactics, with a team set up to counterattack more often and a de-emphasis on midfield play. It was sometimes hard to forget that yes, Barcelona did dominate possession in nearly every game they played. And that over the years, the team was not always a model of tiki taka, and probably won’t always will be.

The complaint is there, but it’s a matter of taste. When it comes to results, there’s no arguing Lucho brought a slate of trophies most managers would be envious of. And in truth, only Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff surpass him when it comes to winners’ medals in Catalonia.

Luis Enrique might fall short of that high bar, but there’s hardly any shame in coming close to such a stratospheric standard.

Speaking earlier this year, Gerard Pique reflected: “When Luis Enrique came, we came from being absolute sh*t. I would like everyone to remember all the work he's done with us and all he left us in his time as player. We are with him to the death."

More recently, Pique went further: "He is one of the best managers in history. It's easy to just remember the titles, because there have been so many. However, the thing I'll remember is him as a person. He didn't always have the best relationship with all of us, but he eventually conquered the locker room. It's been three wonderful years."

How will you remember Luis Enrique?

Juan Carlos Unzué leaves Barcelona for Celta

The club have confirmed another departure

Barcelona have confirmed that assistant coach Juan Carlos Unzué has left the club after agreeing a two-year deal to manage Celta Vigo.

The 50-year-old replaces Eduardo Berizzo at Balaidos after he stepped down from his post at the end of the season.

Unzue will take coach Robert Moreno, fitness coach Rafa Pol and psychologist Joaquin Valdé with him for his second spell at Celta having been an assistant there to Luis Enrique before following Lucho to Camp Nou in 2014.

Unzue had reportedly been in the running to replace Luis Enrique as manager of Barcelona earlier this season after Lucho had announced his decision to leave this summer.

However, it now appears Ernesto Valverde will be the next man to take over the Camp Nou hotseat with an announcement on that front expected tomorrow.

Valverde is also expected to bring in his own team so it’s little surprise to see Unzue head back to Celta, a club he knows well and it will be interesting to see how he fares next season.

Off-the-radar: A sorcerer, a van Gaal reject and two slayed Goliaths - the amazing story of Diego Cascón

Sarthak Kumar narrates the story of van Gaal reject Diego Cascón - a story that involves warding off the evil eye and slaying Real Madrid and Villarreal.

In light of Barcelona B's promotion playoff game against Cultural Leonesa, this is the story of one of its youth graduates.

The rugged pitch of the Estadio Santo Domingo was greeted by the applause and cheers of 3,000 spectators. The stadium was half-empty, but for the amateur club, it was a dream to be a part of the match. This match.

This match, they were playing Real Madrid.

Read the Madrid lineup - Dudek; Arbeloa, Albiol, Metzelder, Drenthe; Mahamadou Diarra, Guti, Van der Vaart; Granero; Raúl and Benzema - and you would have goosebumps as a first division side, forget an amateur third division side with an average annual salary of €36,000. Oh, and Gago, Marcelo and Van Nistelrooy also played in that match.

It was AD Alcorcón vs Real Madrid, and it was spectacular. It was spectacular because it was Alcorcón’s first match against top-flight opposition - and what better way to have a match like that than against nine international players in the starting eleven. It was spectacular because no one had known about this small club or that it was based in Madrid itself. It was spectacular because of the financial gap between the two teams. The wage bill of Alcorcón’s matchday squad was one million euros, exactly 110 times less than that of Real Madrid.

It was also spectacular for another reason. Real Madrid were destroyed.

Alcorcón’s midfield, who nobody knew about, suddenly looked better than internationally capped players. Ernesto Gómez and Fernando Béjar, the interiors, ran like dogs, chasing the ball and hassling the opposition at every opportunity. Rubén Sanz, on the tip of the midfield diamond, was neat and tidy in possession, keeping the play ticking and the ball flowing in the final third. And donning the number 10 shirt, Sergio Mora, sitting in the base of midfield in a regista role, became central to every play.

The passing, pressing and possession was excellent. Real Madrid’s midfield looked liked the ones in the third division. They were being outplayed in every department. The desire to win was evident. Shot after shot, world-class pass after world-class pass, recovery after recovery, Alcorcón had the game in their hands.

The first goal was precisely that - a beautiful pass from Sergio Mora found Real reject and striker Borja Pérez, who dribbled past two Real Madrid defenders and scored past a third. The second came from Mora again - released by Béjar, he passed to Borja in the box for a certain goal. It was a goal, just that Arbeloa had got there first.

Real were shocked. And it was disappointing that they had only two shots to show as a recovery, which former Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Juanma easily parried away.

Alcorcón were still dangerous, still playing extremely well. A deadly cross from right-back Nagore found the post, the goal-line but not the goal. A deadly counter from Alcorcón saw second striker Diego Cascón play the ball into the box again. This time, Ernesto made a perfectly timed run to slot past Dudek.

By half-time, Alcorcón were ahead by three goals. By the hour mark, they would make it four, as a poorly cleared set piece found Borja, who coolly finished home. Real Madrid tried. But as hard as they tried something always came in the way - Juanma was spectacular but so was the team. Whenever a Real Madrid player got the ball there was an Alcorcón player in his face. Whenever there was an Alcorcón player on the ball there were four more ahead of him to pass the ball too. With passing that exquisite and moves that intricate, all that was left was to walk the ball into the net.

AD Alcorcón 4-0 Real Madrid. On 27th October, 2009, the damage was done. Real Madrid went trophyless that season; the psychological damage had been too much.

By contrast, Alcorcón were promoted that very season, and for the first time were playing in the professional leagues in 2010-11.

"In the first forty-five minutes there was hardly a difference between a first division team, Villarreal, and one of the Segunda B, Polideportivo Ejido. It was the "inferior" team that was clearly dominating."

-Marca

There was no way through.

Villarreal tried and tried. They tried through balls and long balls. They tried ground passes and crosses. They tried pressing higher up the pitch and they tried pressing in their own half.

Nothing was working.

It wasn't that Poli Ejido were defending deep - it was that you could see their desire on the pitch more. They cared more. There were always two men on the Villarreal player who had the ball. They dribbled past an unsupported Villarreal defense with ease.

Villarreal never even stood a chance.

Jorge Molina got a hat-trick. Gregory got two more towards the end. Juli ran the show with exquisite dribbling. Mikel Rico ran and ran until he could run no more.

Poli Ejido won 5-0 against a team that couldn't even challenge its goalkeeper Razak Brimah, a 21-year-old who had only played two cup games in Spain before that game.

Diego Cascón began in the world of football in Loyola (the school team where he studied in his hometown, León: los Jesuitas), up to the "freshmen" cadetes. While in the alevín team, Barcelona took interest in him.

But there were problems with him and another guy from Salamanca. Barcelona ended up sacking Serra Ferrer and hiring Van Gaal, who ruled out all signings that Serra Ferrer had proposed for the youth teams.

Subsequently, in the second year cadetes he played for Cultural. At the club, he ascended to the juvenils and then to the first team which was playing in the Segunda B in 2003. He stayed at the club till 2007, scoring 12 goals in his last season at Cultural.

He would go on to play at Badalona, Poli Ejido, Alcorcón, and Eibar for a season each. It was at these clubs that he gained the reputation of being an effective super sub - someone who could make an impact in the last minutes of the game. In fact, he scored five goals in 29 appearances at Ejido, despite playing just 714 minutes!

In 2011, he joined Jaén in 2011 - also in the Segunda B - where he played for three seasons and captained the team in the last two.

It was here where he showed that when managers really put their confidence in him and gave him regular minutes, he did make an impact. He scored 12 in his first season at Jaén.

But his poor stamina, combined with his incredible speed and strength, meant that teams would use him to make sure opposition defenses didn't push too high towards the end of a game.

In his second season, he would lead Jaén to the Segunda, and even scored eight goals. But those goals came in the first half of the season. In April 2013, Cascón solicited the services of a sorcerer in April 2013 in an attempt to end a negative scoring drought, feeling he was a victim of the evil eye.

He never scored for Jaén again.

Even though he made his professional debut at last at the age of 29, after making just 11 substitute appearances, in January 2014 he was told by Jaén he was no longer needed. He waived the compensation due on his contract, rolled back tears at his farewell press conference, and moved to Kitchee in Hong Kong. After winning the Hong Kong first division and finishing as runner-up in the FA Cup, in July 2014 he received an offer from Cartagena.

Instead, he moved to Columbia, signing for "Red Devils" América Cali, where he played 14 games and scored zero goals.

He is now back in Spain. In 2015, he signed for Melilla, where he scored 9 goals in his first season, but just 285 minutes in his second season prompted him to move this January to Mérida.

At the age of 32, his chance to play professional football again is all but over.

The sad reality is that Diego Cascón's story is only reported, however meagerly, because he started, and finished, that fateful game against Real Madrid, and replaced hat-trick hero Jorge Molina for fourteen minutes in the 5-0 demolition of Villarreal.

The sad reality is that stories similar to his will not matter.

Because they will never be heard.

Barcelona 3-1 Alavés, Copa del Rey Final 2017: Community Player Ratings

We rated the players on Lucho’s last Barca game in charge

Jasper Cillessen

Got away with one in the first half when Gomez’s shot beat him at his near post and rolled across the line but had no chance at all with the goal. Otherwise coped with everything else that was thrown at him.

Rating: 6

Community Rating: 6

Javier Mascherano

Was stretchered off after just nine minutes after an ugly clash of heads and it was a sad way for him to depart on what could possibly be his final ever Barcelona appearance.

Rating: n/a

Community Rating: 6

Gerard Piqué

A big mistake early on almost allowed Gomez to open the scoring but got away with it and was pretty solid afterwards.

Rating: 6.5

Community Rating: 7

Samuel Umtiti

Finished off a fine debut season at Barcelona with yet another accomplished display as he picked up his first Copa del Rey.

Rating: 7

Community Rating: 7

Jordi Alba

Looked good going forwards and, aside from poor pass to Cillessen, did little wrong defensively.

Rating: 6.5

Community Rating: 7

Sergio Busquets

Not at his best for Barcelona by all means but worked hard and was disciplined in the second half as Luis Enrique’s side claimed the victory.

Rating: 6

Community Rating: 7

Ivan Rakitić

Like Busquets it was a fairly subdued showing by the Croatian but he did enough against a spirited Alaves side.

Rating: 6

Community Rating: 7

Andrés Iniesta

A great display from Iniesta who showed flashes of his brilliant best and was frequently just too good for Alaves as, like Messi, he picked up his 30th Barcelona trophy.

Rating: 8

Community Rating: 8

Lionel Messi

Just brilliant - what else can you say? Took charge of the match with a superb first goal before having a hand in goals for Neymar and Paco. So much better than everyone else it’s unfair.

Rating: 9

Community Rating: 10

Paco Alcácer

Took his chance with Luis Suarez suspended and got his name on the scoresheet with a lovely finish. Also managed to jump out of the way of Messi’s ball in for Neymar when the Brazilian scored.

Rating: 7.5

Community Rating: 7

Neymar

Seems to save his best for the big games and did it again on Saturday night. Scored a final goal, looked brilliant on the ball whenever he had it but also put in a decent defensive shift as he signed off the season in style.

Rating: 8.5

Community Rating: 8

André Gomes

Replaced Javier Mascherano early on and played well in an unfamiliar position. Looked comfortable in possession, seemed far more confident with his passing and even helped set up Neymar for his goal.

Rating: 7.5

Community Rating: 7

Aleix Vidal

Given the last 10 minutes and it was brilliant to see him back in action.

Rating: n/a

Community Rating: 6

Luis Enrique

His final game in charge and it couldn’t have gone much better really. In many ways it was a typical Barca performance under Lucho: some strange selections, lots of goals, some defensive wobbles, but ultimately a victory and yet another trophy.

Rating: 8

Community Rating: 8

The Team

Took a while to get going against a committed and feisty Alaves side but once Messi took charge that was no stopping them and the two goals just before half-time killed the game. Lots of plus points with Vidal making his return after injury, and Gomes and Paco finishing tough first seasons well. And of course, the perfect send off for Lucho.

How the papers reacted to Barcelona's Copa del Rey win over Alaves

السبت، 27 مايو 2017

Barcelona vs. Alavés, Copa del Rey Final 2017: Match Review, Community Player Ratings

Luis Enrique signs off with a win and yet another trophy

Barcelona signed off their season in fine style with a 3-1 win over Alaves in the final of the Copa del Rey in Luis Enrique’s final game as Barca coach.

Lionel Messi sent Barca on their way before Neymar and Paco Alcacer made the game safe in the last ever competitive game at the Vicente Calderon.

Barcelona lined up as expected with Jasper Cillessen in goal, Javier Mascherano returning in defence while Alcacer took the place of the suspended Luis Suarez in attack.

However, Mascherano lasted less than 10 minutes after having to depart on a stretcher after an ugly clash of heads with Marcos Llorente left him bleeding and dazed and swiftly replaced by Andre Gomes.

By that time Barcelona had already had their first chance of the game, Messi teeing up Jordi Alba who came flying down the left and headed across goal but Alcacer could not quite get on the end of it.

Alaves were certainly fired up for the clash and tempers occasionally threatened to boil over with Edgar Mendez booked for fouling Samuel Umtiti on the touchline and then appearing to stand on the defender who was left furious and remonstrated angrily with the officials.

Neymar was also seen berating the officials after Messi was fouled on the edge of the box and the referee played advantage as a feisty opening period threatening to boil over.

However, despite all their protestations Barcelona were lucky not to go behind after a mistake by Gerard Pique allowed Ibai Gomez to pinch possession and beat Jasper Cillessen at his near post, his shot then rebounded off the goalkeeper and rolled across the line.

Somehow Barcelona survived and minutes later they went ahead after yet another brilliant strike from Messi. The Argentine swapped passes with Neymar before sidefooting the ball home for his 54th goal of a simply brilliant season.

The lead did not last long however, Theo Hernandez equalising with a stunning free kick that gave Cillessen absolutely no chance and showed exactly what he has been in such demand this season.

The game looked to be heading into half-time on level terms when Messi suddenly turned on the magic once again. The Argentine fed the ball wide to Gomes who slipped it across goal for Neymar to tap home.

A minute later and it was almost over, Messi again the creator with a great run before slipping the ball to Alcacer who finished brilliantly to send Barcelona in 3-1 up at half-time.

The second half started in much the same vein, Iniesta teasing the ball to Messi who raced past Llorente and found Alcacer at the far post but he couldn’t quite force the ball past Pacheco.

Barca continued to boss the game however, Iniesta firing over although Alaves came back into and thought they’d grabbed one back with 20 minutes to go, Deyverson’s effort correctly ruled out for offside.

Tempers flared again shortly afterwards, Neymar going to ground in the penalty area after a push from Ruben Sobrino that led to a shoving match with Messi and Andres Iniesta both going into the book.

That was about as heated as it got however, with Barcelona seeing the game out safely thereafter and even sending on Aleix Vidal with 10 minutes to go as he completed an amazing recovery from a dislocated ankle.

The crowd chanted Lucho's name in the final minutes as Barcelona made it three consecutive Copa del Rey titles with a deserved win and a ninth trophy as Barca boss for Enrique in his final game.

Barcelona vs. Alavés, Copa del Rey Final 2017: Match Review & Rate

Alavés, Copa del Rey Final 2017: Final Score 3-1, Barça end season with trophy

CAMPEONES, CAMPEONES, OLÉ OLÉ OLÉ!!!

Barcelona finished the season on a high with the Copa del Rey title thanks to a 3-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés in the last ever match at the Vicente Calderón stadium. A very physical match was decided by Lionel Messi, who once again carried the Blaugrana to another title, the second this season.

FIRST HALF

The game was very physical from the very start, with Alavés players kicking every leg wrapped up in a blue sock, but Barça remained calm and began to find spaces to attack. It took Lionel Messi half an hour to score a great goal, and even though Theo Hernández equalized a few minutes later with a sensational free kick, Messi couldn't be stopped.

The Argentine found André Gomes who then found Neymar for Barça's second goal, which was followed by a simply insane run and assist from Messi to Paco Alcácer, who doubled Barça's lead as we reached the end of the first period.

At halftime, a sensational Messi gave the Blaugrana a two-goal lead. They just needed to confirm the win in the second half and lift the trophy.

SECOND HALF

The final period was all about preserving the lead and avoiding problems. Alavés had a few dangerous chances and even scored a goal that was disallowed for offside, but nothing really happened and the Blaugrana confirmed their first half advantage to clinch the victory and the title.

A very strange season is now over, a new coach will come and the Spanish Super Cup will be against Real Madrid. Next season should be fun.

This Lionel Messi assist is just not fair at all

Human beings aren’t supposed to do this.

Barcelona are taking a 3-1 lead into the halftime break after Lionel Messi set up Paco Alcacer for this goal. It was an unbelievable assist to make the goal happen. He’s got eyes in the back of his head and is not human.

Neymar finishes off nice Barcelona team goal to take Copa del Rey final lead

Woot!

After trading goals midway through the first half with Alaves, Barcelona have retaken the lead through Neymar. The Brazilian tapped in a simple finish at the far post after some nice build-up play by Lionel Messi and Andre Gomes. It was a nice goal and an important one as Barcelona take a 2-1 lead to the halftime break.

Lionel Messi’s routine cup final golazo would be most player’s best career goal

He’s good.

Lionel Messi does Lionel Messi things on the big stage. The legend has given Barcelona a 1-0 first half lead over Alaves in the Copa del Rey final with a sensational curling goal from outside of the box. While this goal on the Messi scale of amazingness might not even register a 5, to most players around the world it was be a 15.

The ease at which he scores such great goals is comical at this point. It’s not even newsworthy when he scores goals most people dream of scoring in training and he’s doing it in a cup final.

Unfortunately, Alaves came right back and equalized, but it shouldn’t take anything away from his great effort.

Barcelona vs. Alavés live stream: Start time, TV channel, and how to watch Copa del Rey Final online

Barça look to finish the season with a trophy, and you must watch it

The season is over today for Barcelona, and Luis Enrique's managerial career comes to an end as well. And what better way to say goodbye to the season and the coach than with a trophy?

Barça will face Deportivo Alavés in the Copa del Rey Final on Saturday. Sure, this isn't the most prestigious competition in history and the real Final we wanted was the Champions League next week, but after such a weird season from Barça, this is the best we could have asked for.

Alavés are a surprising opponent, and given this is their first major final, they won't be going to the Vicente Calderón looking to have a good time. They want to win, and it'll be a tough game for the Catalan giants.

Another nice reason to be interested in this final is this will be the last ever game at the Calderón, the historical home of Atlético Madrid, who will be moving to a new stadium and will say goodbye to one of the best stadiums in Europe.

This should be a great Final and a great sendoff to a great stadium. You're not gonna miss this one, are you?
