Barça 2-4 Roma: Tale of Two Halves

The first teamers look amazing, the kids need some work

Barcelona lost their first game of preseason thanks to a second half collapse that led to a big 4-2 win for AS Roma in Dallas, Texas. The Blaugrana once again looked fantastic in the first half when all of his experienced players were on the pitch, but a ten-minute collapse by the young Barça B boys in the second half against a strong Roma team led to what looks like a bad result, but a result that doesn’t really matter in the end. It’s preseason.

FIRST HALF

The first 20 minutes of the first period belonged completely to Barça, who looked just as good as they did against Tottenham. The passing was sensational, and saying Arthur looked like Xavi really is not an exaggeration. The Brazilian was pointing to where every pass should go, and whenever he was on the ball the team was in control and dangerous.

The goal came early when Rafinha made a one-two with Munir and fired home a really nice volley. But once Roma man-marked Arthur and targeted Rafinha with some really hard challenges for a preseason game, Barça lost their momentum and we saw more of an even game, even though the Blaugrana had the lion’s share of possession for the entire half. The Italians looked better as we approached halftime, and Stephan El Shaarawy scored a deserved equalizer for Roma.

At halftime, a very competitive and fun game was all even. We would probably see a lot of substitutions ahead of the second half, which was kind of sad because we were watching a really good match.

SECOND HALF

Ernesto Valverde decided not to change his entire team at halftime and changed just six players this time around, and it worked: Barça looked more composed as a group with a mix of first- and second-teamers, and they took the lead once again when Ballou found Malcom who scored his debut goal for the Catalans.

At the 60-minute mark both coaches decided to make wholesale changes and we got a full Barça B side for the final half hour of the game. And as we saw against Tottenham, once the kids were faced with experienced, international players, they struggled a lot. The defense was once again pretty bad, and a mistake by the backline led to Alessandro Florenzi scoring a weird equalizer with just over 10 minutes to go.

Just five minutes later, Bryan Cristante somehow found himself in loads of space in the box and just beat Japser Cillessen to give Roma the lead. There was more to come when Chumi fouled Patrik Schick inside the box. Diego Perotti buried the penalty with ease and Roma doubled their lead.

And just like that, in a span of just eight minutes, Roma scored three unanswered goals and won the game. The result doesn’t matter, but the Barça B kids still look very timid and completely lost with the increased speed of first team football. That’s fine for preseason, but it’s hard to see any of these boys helping us this season.

Barça will finish their United States tour with a friendly against AC Milan at the weekend, and hopefully we see more than just 45 minutes from the first team players who looked extremely good once again.

Roma hilariously trolled Barça and Malcom on Twitter

This is REALLY funny, and REALLY lighthearted

Barcelona and AS Roma are playing an International Champions Cup friendly in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. This was supposed to be OK just a week ago, then Barça signed Malcom when he was about to board a plane to join Roma.

This has obviously sparked a lot of jokes and memes on the internet, but we’ve got a new hilarious one coming from the official AS Roma Twitter account.

How, do you ask? Well, let’s first look at the tweet from Barça’s account with the starting lineup from the match:

Now, please look at Roma’s tweet:

See the difference? If you do, you’ll probably have a good laugh. This is just good old banter, and Roma aren’t really that mad at Barça on this. They just have really good jokes.

Marek Hamšík “Offers Himself” to FC Barcelona

Barcelona are not yet making a move for him though

Napoli’s Marek Hamšík has “offered himself” to FC Barcelona, according to Diario SPORT. The attacking midfielder interests Barcelona, says the report, but he doesn’t fit the profile they are seeking.

Still, his success in Italy has made Barcelona consider the option, so they’ll put it on hold for now.

Adrien Rabiot still seems like the priority signing in midfield, although Barcelona depend on the player himself to force the move and reject an extension with Paris Saint-Germain.

Thiago Alcántara has been another rumored target, with his brother, Rafinha, telling reporters he wants to be reunited with his sibling at the Camp Nou.

Another option is Frenkie De Jong. Ajax have warned Barcelona they will not sell, but the blaugrana are seeing whether the Dutch club will qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage, and whether that will change their stance.

Rumor Round-up: Ramsey, Dembélé, Aleix Vidal, Munir

Silly Season continues!

Barça want Ramsey for Dembélé?

We start with a ridiculous claim from the most ridiculous outlet on Earth: The Sun is “reporting” that Barcelona have told Arsenal they want Aaron Ramsey plus cash to let Ousmane Dembélé join the Gunners. They say the Blaugrana want to improve their midfield depth and Dembélé knows about Arsenal’s interest, but we all know Barça have made it publicly clear multiple times they will not sell the young Frenchman. Plus it’s The Sun saying this, so let’s just move on.

Vidal “very close” to Sevilla move

Multiple reports from multiple outlets in Spain are saying that Aleix Vidal is closing in on a return to Sevilla, the club he left to join Barça in 2015. Vidal was never able to become a key first team player and Ernesto Valverde has given the club the green light to sell him. The deal will be agreed for 10 million euros, and the announcement should come once the clubs finish their negotiations. Barça want 9 million up front plus another 1 million in bonuses, while Sevilla are looking for a 8+2 package, but that isn’t seen as big hurdle to clear. According to Mundo Deportivo, the transfer should be done in 48 hours.

Munir ‘waiting’ for Barça extension

Young Barça striker Munir El-Haddadi has been informed by Technical Secretary Eric Abidal that he is part of the plans for next season and will receive a new contract soon. Munir started preseason on a high with a goal and a solid 45 minutes against Tottenham Hotspur, and if Barça do sell Paco Alcácer this summer Munir is hoping for significant minutes as a backup to any player in attack, which is something Ernesto Valverde really values.

The preparations for the new season continue for Barcelona with a big game for Ernesto Valverde and his man as they face AS Roma at the spectacular AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas in the second match of Barça’s road in the International Champions Cup.

The Blaugrana beat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties in their preseason debut and looked fantastic in the first half, which is when the first team players were in action. Even some of the Barça B kids looked really good, and the entire squad got a chance to play and show their worth.

Losing André Gomes and Denis Suarez to injury was a big blow, but Marc-André ter Stegen has joined the squad in Dallas and will most likely play tonight to start getting in shape for the new campaign. Arthur will look to repeat his amazing debut, Munir El-Haddadi is going for another goal, and Malcom is facing the team he was supposed to join before moving to the Camp Nou. This should be fun.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Cillessen; Semedo, Marlon, Lenglet, Miranda; Arthur, Roberto, Rafinha; Malcom, Alcácer, Munir

Roma (4-3-3): Mirante; Florenzi, Fazio, Manolas, Kolarov; Pellegrini, Strootman, Pastore; Ünder, Schick, Perotti

PREDICTION

Again, the result is not important. At all. And because Roma have their entire first team squad in this tour, the Italians will probably play a lot better once the Barça B boys come into the game: 3-2 win for Roma.

André Gomes Injury Not as Bad as First Feared

This could make his chances of leaving better

Good news for the birthday boy. André Gomes will only miss four to five weeks due to injury, much less than the original projection of around two months, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The player went off hurt during Barcelona’s first preseason game, a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur that saw the blaugrana win the ensuing penalty shootout 5-4.

Because the injury isn’t as bad, he will be fit to play very early in the season, which makes a possible exit less complicated, should he and the team decide that is the way to go.

If not, Gomes would at least be ready to challenge for minutes in Ernesto Valverde’s rotation earlier than expected.

Barcelona Get in Touch with Chelsea over Eden Hazard

Real Madrid, of course, are also in the race, according to a report.

Eden Hazard is yet to join Real Madrid, and it’s in part because FC Barcelona are competing for his signature, according to Radio Monte Carlo.

The source says that Chelsea are feeling more and more resigned to losing both of their star Belgians, Hazard and Thibaut Cortois, to Real Madrid.

The interest between Hazard and Madrid is said to be mutual, but los blancos have not been able to come to any agreement with the Blues. And, another team has joined “the dance,” says RMC: Barcelona.

Questions remain as to how Barça would fit Hazard into a side that already includes new signing Malcom alongside Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembélé, Luis Suárez, and a chap called Lionel Messi.

Regardless, Barcelona do see the need for at least one more signing, and they are raising funds via sales.

Can Barcelona truly compete for this signature, or are they simply trying to make matters complicated for their rivals?

Arthur is a perfect fit for Barcelona

The Brazilian had an impressive debut against Tottenham

Arthur arrived at Barcelona when barely anybody knew him. He was being hyped as a talent but the possibility of him not fitting into the squad was somewhat high. Reports of his teammates being impressed in training were flooding social media when he first joined his new colleagues and finally, there was some hope.

While a lot of focus has been put on his golazo against Tottenham Hotspur, there was perhaps a minor moment during the first half that made me realize this Brazilian was a special player. Early on, when Barça and Tottenham were struggling to keep hold of the ball for longer than a handful of passes, there was a moment when Denis Suarez received a pass in space and Arthur rushed next to him to tell him to calm down.

The game was chaotic and Arthur saw that the tempo had to be slowed down to get control. He went up to Denis and asked him to pass the ball back instead of rushing forward into defenders and conceding possession. Almost immediately, the momentum shifted in Barça’s favour and the Catalans cruised through the half. This type of play is reminiscent of arguably the greatest controller of all time, Xavi Hernández. While the comparison may be too steep in terms of quality, it is apt in terms of mindset and approach to the game.

Arthur is set for big things at Barcelona we may have truly bought a hidden midfield gem this time around.

Three takeaways from Barça’s win against Tottenham

There was a lot to be impressed with in Barça’s preseason debut

Barcelona kicked off the new campaign with a win against Tottenham Hotspur in their opening game of the International Champions Cup preseason tournament.

Manager Ernesto Valverde approached the game as a feel out one with opportunities given out to multiple players since many of the first team players that featured in the World Cup are still on vacation. Out of the 13 Barcelona players that represented their country at the 2018 World Cup, only Marc-André ter Stegen was selected by Valverde to play for the team during preseason.

With a squad featuring returners from last season, new signings, La Masia talents and players looking for redemption, this game and the rest of the preseason campaign will give the coaching staff a glimpse at which players are deserving of more opportunities and which need more work.

So in front of a jam-packed crowd at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, Barcelona and Tottenham provided the fans with a game that was better than anticipated.

In the first half, Barcelona were the ones creating chances and out-hustling Spurs. Barça scored the first goal off a cross into the box from Sergi Roberto that was received by Rafinha, who sent it in for Munir for an effortless header. Later in the first half, Arthur scored a stunning goal to make it 2-0.

The second half featured many La Masia talents coming into the game along with the debut of new signing Malcom. The game slowed down early in the half as neither team created any threatening goal-scoring chances. But Tottenham scored two quick goals in the 73rd and 75th minute to tie it up at 2-2. Barça ended up winning 5-3 in penalties with Malcom scoring the winner.

The one major discouraging aspect from the victory were the early injuries to both André Gomes and Denis Suarez. Both players will be evaluated over the coming days.

Although it was just a preseason fixture, it was good to see the team back in action. Here are three takeaways from Barça’s win over Tottenham.

1. Juan Miranda and Marc Cucurella showed they are ready to battle it out for a spot in the first team

Rumors have running rampant as of late surrounding the future of Lucas Digne. All signs point to his departure as Everton are making significant strides to sign the French international. Digne’s departure seems inevitable and this would grant a golden opportunity for both Marc Cucurella and Juan Miranda. When Digne departs, Barça are leaning towards not signing a replacement as they hope to give first team reps to those two Barça B talents.

So this game allowed them to show Valverde what they are capable of from a defending and attacking standpoint. And they did not disappoint against Tottenham.

Miranda was given the nod by Valverde to start alongside Marlon, Lenglet and Semedo in a more experienced backline. Throughout the first half, Miranda was heavily involved in the attack. With his pace, he made promising runs on the flank and delivered a couple of crosses that created goal-scoring opportunities. In one instance in the 10th minute, Miranda freed up space for himself on the wing and sent in a perfect cross to Munir but he botched the finish. Miranda also took risks throughout the game with long passes and challenges to opposing wingers — which must make the coaching staff proud.

On the other hand, Cucurella had a decent showing in his opportunity in the second half. He was aggressive in his challenges and moved the ball with threatening pace on the wing. But he made a crucial error when his poor clearance in the 72nd minute allowed Son Heung-Min to capitalize and score a goal.

Both young players will look to continue to impress Valverde and play at their best against AS Roma on Tuesday.

2. Arthur Melo impresses in his Barça debut

Arthur Melo garnered much of the attention during the game and it is for good reason. After months of scouting and speculation of whether the board would sign him, it was truly exhilarating to finally see him debut.

So in his first game for Barça, Arthur did everything and even more for the team. In a central role in midfield, Arthur provided support for the center-backs and the other midfielders. When the team did not control possession, Arthur moved all over the pitch to press and force Spurs into releasing the ball in uncomfortable spots.

Considering that this was just a preseason game, his work rate on the pitch was truly admiring. From maintaining possession to jumpstarting a quick build-up play, Arthur undoubtedly showed what he is capable of as a midfielder.

And to top it off, he scored an exquisite goal that left the Rose Bowl crowd in awe.

Wow.

3. The youth talents gained crucial experience

For a squad that featured over a dozen players from La Masia, this game provided them with an opportunity to shine. The vast majority of the players were playing in front of the biggest crowd of their careers and against some of the best players they have ever faced. More importantly, they were all playing in front of the manager.

From their effort on the pitch to how they responded under pressure, they all gave encouraging performances. For Jorge Cuenca, Riqui Puig and eight other La Masia boys, this was a game that they will never forget.

Overall, the team performed well and showed very few signs of rust for an opening game of preseason. The new signings each received 45 minutes of playing time and adapted well in what is a completely new play style and system for them. And this game also gave players such as Rafinha and Munir an opportunity to prove their worth to the club and showcase what they are truly capable of.

Barcelona will now fly to Dallas on Sunday to train as they prepare for their second International Champions Cup match, against Roma from the AT&T Stadium in Texas. For the players and coaches, this will not just be another preseason friendly especially after what went down during the Malcom transfer saga.

Barça 2-2 Tottenham (5-3 pen): Impressive

A very fun start to the new campaign!

Barcelona made their start to the new season with a very fun International Champions Cup friendly against Tottenham Hotspur at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night. The Blaugrana would eventually win on penalties, but the big story is the first 45 minutes in which the reigning La Liga champions were simply fantastic and gave us reasons to be excited about what’s ahead.

FIRST HALF

4-3-3. Midfield dominance. Beautiful goals that came from high pressing and awesome passing sequences. It was just the first half of the first preseason game, but oh it was good to watch the real Barcelona play again. It was beautiful, it was dominant, it was suffocating, it was impressive, it was exciting, and it was effective.

Spurs had a good start with their high pressing forcing a couple of nervous long balls from the Barça backline, but as soon as Arthur took control of the game everyone calmed down and the Blaugrana started to dominate. The Brazilian was really the star of the first half, demanding the ball at all times, making quick and smart decisions, all while delivering perfect passes time and time again.

The goals happened too. The first with a tap-in from Munir El-Haddadi, and the second thanks to a spectacular debut goal by Arthur. Barça went into halftime with a commanding lead, and quite a few exciting signs for coaches and fans.

SECOND HALF

Ernesto Valverde decided to field an entirely different starting outfield team for the second half, with nine Barça B players and new signining Malcom looking to show the manager their worth.

Because Tottenham had more experienced first team players, they naturally had more of the ball and were the better team in the final period, with Christian Eriksen hitting the post from a free kick early in the second half and looking the most dangerous player on the pitch.

For a while it seemed like nothing would happen as the young Barça boys managed to control the game, but in just two minutes Heung-Min Son and Geórges-Kevin Nkoudou scored thanks to two bad mistakes by the Blaugrana defenders and the game was all even out of nowhere.

As we reached the final 15 minutes, it looked like Spurs were more likely to complete the comeback and win the game as Barça were on the ropes just trying to survive, but the young Blaugrana managed to hold on to the draw and we went to penalties.

All five Barça takers scored really good penalties, and Jasper Cillessen saved one of Tottenham’s spot kicks to give the Blaugrana a 5-3 win and start preseason with 90 fun minutes of football and a really good penalty shootout.

Barcelona: Cillessen; Semedo (Palencia), Marlon (Mingueza), Lenglet (Cuenca), Miranda (Cucurella); Arthur (Collado), Roberto (Monchu), Gomes (Puig); Rafinha (Malcom), Munir (Ruiz), Denis (Pérez (Ballou))

Goals: Munir (15’), Arthur (29’)

Tottenham: Gazzaniga (Vorm); Aurier, Carter-Vickers, Davies, Walker-Peters (Sánchez); Sissoko (Nkoudou), Amos, Eriksen; Lucas (Georgiou), Llorente (Skipp), Son

Goals: Son (73’), Nkoudou (75’)

WATCH: Arthur scores extraordinary goal in Barcelona debut

WHAT A START FOR THE BRAZILIAN!!!

If you did not know who the new Barcelona player named Arthur was, you have now definitely been introduced.

The Brazilian made a spectacular debut for the Blaugrana against Tottenham Hotspur, showing unbelievable composure with the ball and a crazy hunger to press from midfield. He looked like a superstar after just 30 minutes, and it seems like Barça have really found a gem.

Oh, and he scored this goal, too:

Enjoy Arthur indeed!

Barça lose Denis, Gomes to injury against Spurs

Two more casualties for Valverde to deal with

It seems like the injury bug has decided to hit Barcelona really early this season. In the first 20 minutes of the team’s first match of the preseason, against Tottenham Hotspur at the Rose Bowl, Ernesto Valverde saw two of his first team midfielders, Denis Suarez and André Gomes forced to leave the game early due to injury.

The two players got hurt in a span of three minutes, and both appear to have suffered injuries to their left leg, most likely the hamstrings. Further testing will be done after the match to determine the extent of the problems, but this is definitely bad news for Valverde in this United States tour since the rest of his midfielders are still in vacation after the World Cup.

We’ll provide you with more info when it becomes available.

BARCELONA FOOTBALL IS BACK! The World Cup was nice and all, but nothing beats seeing our favorite club playing, even if it’s just preseason. The Blaugrana start their preparations for the new campaign with the first of three International Champions Cup matches in the United States, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, against Tottenham Hotspur.

Ernesto Valverde is missing 12 players who went to the World Cup, plus Paulinho who was sold and the injured Sergi Samper and Paco Alcácer. There are plenty of very talented youngsters from Barça B who have realistic opportunities to join the first team this season, and this tour will be crucial for them.

A few players to keep an eye on in this match: new signings Clément Lenglet, Arthur and Malcom who are all expected to make their debuts, Barça B left-back Marc Cucurella who is expected to replace Lucas Digne if the Frenchman is indeed sold to Everton, and Munir El-Haddadi who will most likely stay with the squad this season and is looking to score his way into meaningful minutes once the meaningful games begin.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-4-2): Cillessen; Semedo, Marlon, Lenglet, Digne; Vidal, Roberto, Gomes, Denis; Rafinha, Munir

Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Aurier, Sánchez, Carter-Vickers, Davies; Sissoko, Amos; Lucas, Eriksen, Son; Llorente

PREDICTION

This is the first preseason friendly and the result means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (PLEASE REMEMBER THAT), so I just want a lot of goals and a lot of minutes for the young boys: I’m going for a 3-3 draw, Barça win on penalties.

Alcácer doubtful for Tottenham friendly

Things aren’t looking good for the striker

Things aren’t looking good for Paco Alcácer right now. The Barcelona striker has been involved in a lot of transfer rumors recently and it’s hard to see him staying at the club at the moment, and he could miss one of his last chances to impress the manager.

According to multiple reports out of the United States, Alcácer trained alone on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles as the rest of the group prepared for Saturday night’s friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in the International Champions Cup. The reports say Paco has severe muscle pain and it’s very unlikely he’ll be available to play against Spurs.

If that’s not bad enough, reports out of Spain say that Technical Secretary Eric Abidal has informed Munir El-Haddadi he’s part of the club’s plans for next season, which means Alcácer has some competition for the backup striker role. With strong rumors linking him to Watford FC in the Premier League and Valencia in La Liga (that’s if Rodrigo indeed joins Real Madrid), it’s really hard to see Paco sticking around.

And the worst part for Alcácer is that Barça fans won’t be missing him that much.

MD: Barcelona, Everton complete Digne deal

The Frenchman is indeed moving to the Premier League

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona and Everton have in the last few hours completed a deal for left-back Lucas Digne in the region of 20 million euros, and the announcement from both clubs seems to be imminent.

The deal isn’t quite done yet because Everton also want to sign Yerry Mina and make a double announcement, but those negotiations are more difficult than Digne and could take a little longer to be completed since a few other clubs are currently in talks with Barça for the Colombian defender.

Regardless of whether or not they manage to sign Mina, Everton will have Digne as part of their squad for next season. The 25-year-old will join them on what’s likely to be a five-year contract, and the Toffees will be looking to solve a problem in the position with the decline of Leighton Baines in recent seasons.

Barça will be losing a very solid contributor who was never bad, but also never great. Digne never threatened Jordi Alba for the starting spot, but provided good enough play whenever Alba was injured or rested. But making good money on Digne while giving an exciting Barça B player like Marc Cucurella a chance in the first team is not a bad deal. At all.

Valverde talks transfers, formations, Ronaldo, Champions League

The Barça manager spoke for the first time since the end of last season

Barcelona are hours away from returning to action as the preparations start for the new season with a massive friendly against Tottenham Hotspur at the Rose Bowl as part of the International Champions Cup tournament in the United States.

And for the first time in this new season, Barça manager Ernesto Valverde spoke to the press and was asked about a lot of different topics. The boss gave his thoughts on Barça’s signings and possible transfers, change of formtations, whether or not Real Madrid losing Cristiano Ronaldo makes it easier for Barça in La Liga, and if winning the Champions League is the big priority in the 2018-19 campaign.

“[On new signings] We are open to other possibilities. We did lose [Paulinho], an important player in the midfield, but we have other players and are also looking at players from the B team.

“[On formation changes] There are players who have yet to arrive. So we have multiple possibilities to explore regarding the system we use. It also depends on the players we have. We are are looking at variations, especially in defence. But there aren’t too many secrets regarding formations.

“[On replacing Iniesta and Paulinho] It doesn’t just depend on me, but also the Club officials who make new signings. Nevertheless, I’m looking for players who can adapt to the ones we already have.

“[On whether Madrid losing Ronaldo makes it easier for Barça] We don’t know. But we have to recognise the kind of player Cristiano was and what he brought to Real Madrid and La Liga. But we lost Andrés [Iniesta].

“We want to win everything. But it’s not easy to play at this Club. We don’t just have to win, but we also have to play well.”

Source: FC Barcelona

It seems pretty clear that Valverde hopes the club is not done with signings, and another midfielder seems to be his priority. The quote about looking at variations in defense when it comes to formation leads me to believe he might use Clément Lenglet as a left-back in certain matches to give him some tactical flexibility, but we’re unlikely to see that in this pre-season tour since there are so many players still in vacation after the World Cup.

MD: Barça targeting Nzonzi as Rabiot backup

If the PSG player doesn’t come to Camp Nou, Barça have added another name to their list of backups

It’s pretty clear by now that Barcelona are zeroed in on Adrien Rabiot from Paris Saint-Germain as their final transfer target after signing Clément Lenglet, Arthur and Malcom, but PSG continue to make negotiations very tough.

Barça are starting to look elsewhere for options in case the Rabiot pursuit goes south, and they’re already targeting Valencia captain Dani Parejo as an option. And according to a new report today, there’s a new target.

Mundo Deportivo says that Steven Nzonzi from Sevilla has been added to the list of Rabiot options, with the World Cup winner providing the experience and talent Ernesto Valverde is looking for as a Sergio Busquets backup.

Also according to the report, Arsenal are strong favorites to sign Nzonzi because of the player’s relationship with new Gunners manager Unai Emery, so that makes things tough if Barça ever decide to go after the 29-year-old.

Nzonzi doesn’t look like a great option, and he seems to be just a backup at this point. I personally like Parejo a lot more than Big Steve, but I’ll be happy if neither player is at Camp Nou after August 31st. What do you think?

Roma president: Barça have to give us Messi after signing Malcom

The Italian club’s president found a way to have fun in a weird situation

It’s safe to say AS Roma have all the right to be upset after losing Brazilian winger Malcom to Barcelona in what was a very bizarre transfer saga this week. After announcing the player and waiting for him to arrive in Rome to sign the deal, the Italians were left stunned as Bordeaux accepted Barça’s offer and Malcom join the Catalans instead.

Roma have already announced they will take legal action against Bordeaux over the issue, but it seems like they don’t have any real problems with Barça. That’s according to club president, James Palotta, who called Barça’s actions “unethical” in a recent readio interview but made such a good joke that a potential “slam” just became really good banter.

“Barcelona have apologised to us but I didn’t accept their apologies. The only way to accept their apologies is if they decide do give us Messi. Barcelona intervened in an unethical way.

“Our director of football Monchi was involved in a conference call with Malcom’s agent and an agreement was reached. We’ve taken legal advice and it appears Bordeaux will now be called to testify”.

Source: Football-Espana

It seems like Palotta knows that Barça did something that doesn’t look great but is just something that happens in pretty much every transfer negotiation. Clubs try to hijack each other’s deals all the time, but the big problem here is that Bordeaux themselves announced they had a deal with Roma and then changed their minds. That’s weird.

As for the “give us Messi” thing, well, just like Palotta passed on Barça’s apology, we’ll pass on that one. Great joke, though.

Bartomeu, Abidal talk Malcom

The two power figures spoke about the Brazilian

Barcelona took the time to present their newest signing, 21-year-old Brazilian winger Malcom, on Thursday night at the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon, and both President Josep Maria Bartomeu and Technical Secretary Eric Abidal had some nice words for Malcom.

Bartomeu did what presidents do, just thanking everybody and saying the player is good. Abidal gave us a more detailed description of the young man, which is good when you’re the technical secretary and is involved in transfers.

President Bartomeu

“We’ve been following Malcom since 2014, and our people who scouted him said he was very good.

We want to thank Nike for letting us use their facilities to present Malcom. We’re sure he’s going to have a great season.”

Eric Abidal

“I’m very proud to present Malcom. He made the leap to Europe and adapted very well to different coaches and tactics.”

“He’s left-footed and can play on both wings. In Brazil he played on the left wing and in Europe he’s played on the right wing. He can also play as an attacking midfielder. He’s a goalscorer and can also provide assists.”

Source: FC Barcelona

Malcom is already training with his teammates and is expected to take some part in the pre-season friendlies in America.

Malcom “very happy” to realize ‘childhood dream’

The Brazilian spoke at his presentation

Barcelona took advantage of training in the Nike headquarters in Portland, Oregon as part of their United States tour to present their newest signing, 21-year-old Brazilian winger Malcom, who joined the club from Bordeaux after a bizarre saga involving AS Roma.

The player spoke at his presentation on Thursday and spoke about realizing a “childhood dream” of playing for Barça, being teammates with Lionel Messi and more.

“I’m very happy with all my heart and this is a dream I’ve had since I was a child. It’s hard to get to a club like Barça and I hope to bring a lot of joy to the fans. With all my heart, I will try to do my best.

“I was always relaxed, because my representatives took care of everything, like contracts.

“I had the opportunity to play for Barça and it’s something I wanted to do as a child, so that’s why I chose this club.

“Also, I wanted to play with the best players in the world. Messi is the best of them, a legend, and I hope I can learn a lot from him.”

Source: Football-Espana

He surely seems very excited about the opportunity, and as strange as the circumstances of his arrival might be, he’s a good player and will have plenty of chances to show his talent. Good luck, kid!

What Does “Més que un Club” Mean?

Given our history & the diversity of our fans, Barça will always viewed to be more than a club by Culés

The Malcom transfer served as excellent material for the ever-growing group of Barça-haters to push the popular narrative that the slogan “Més que un club” is just a hypocritical, romanticized, and outdated motto that currently serves as nothing more than marketing purposes.

And why not? When the plane that left Bordeaux arrived in Rome, the eager fans (one of which was Malcom’s mom!) were left stunned when they found out the man of the hour was actually not on the plane, but rather on his way to Barcelona instead.

The end of this story we all know by now, and the manner in which this transfer took place (ONCE MORE) doesn’t necessarily shed a very friendly light on our club. But we all should remain realistic.

Was what the FC Barcelona execs did illegal? Certainly not. If nothing has been signed, verbal agreements are useless. And if Barça come into the picture (unless the player is a diehard Madridista/Perico or in this case a Roma fan) it goes without saying that our club would be the player’s preferred choice.

Was it ethical? Roma’s president Pallotta seems to think it wasn’t. But is he conveniently forgetting the way they poached Sanabria from us, back in the day when the youngster was about to sign his first professional contract?

Was it amicable? No. Ideally this would have been done in a different manner. Barça have in fact offered an apology, which understandably has not been accepted by Pallotta. If tables were turned around we’d feel hard done by as well. But here again I miss the mentioning of Girondins in all this.

However, judging the recent years with a bit of self-criticism, our club has seen its share of dirt being associated with it since the days of UNICEF, and playing the best brand of football the world has ever seen. From the Neymar signing/selling fiascos, ex-president Rosell resigning and ending up in prison, swapping UNICEF for Qatar, to seeing other values the club once stood for slowly but surely fade away, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that “Més que un club” is frowned upon like never before.

A slogan, which is even being put into question by the Camp Nou itself as this week marks the 50-year anniversary of when FC Barcelona’s 32nd president, Narcís de Carreras, pronounced those words in a speech in July of 1968. Currently, the stadium commemorates “What does Més que un club mean?”

In an attempt to answer that question, for me “Més que un club” is a value proposition. It is a historical and cultural connotation. It’s a fact. Just like our history, our club’s motto can never be erased, regardless of which board of directors is currently in charge and irrespective of the direction in which they take it.

It is and will always be our club with a dictum, which has a different meaning for each and every one of us. The socios and fans who support the club season after season, through thick and thin, before and after Messi, and most certainly with or without Bartomeu & Co., are the ones who decide what “Més que un club” stands for.

Barça’s history is our pride. But for those critics, who wish to continue to poke the stick, why don’t we compare FC Barcelona to other another global conglomerate such as Apple?

Apple’s value proposition is “The Experience IS the Product”. Did this cease being the case when Steve Jobs passed away? Does this change as their products evolve over time? No and no. For good or bad, Apple will remain dedicated in their quest to comply with their company’s motto.

It is the same in Barça’s case. We’re a club with a rich history of overcoming obstacles. Historically, we’re massive overachieving underdogs. A change of board with questionable practices doesn’t erase what this institution stands for, for the millions of people within Catalunya, Spain and the rest of the world.

Everton Prepare Barcelona Double Swoop

Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina could have a shared destination

Everton are in for a pair of FC Barcelona defenders, according to Sky Sports. Left-back Lucas Digne and centerback Yerry Mina have both been the subject of transfer rumors in the past few weeks, and the pair could be on their way to Merseyside together.

Catalan journalist Gerard Romero has said that Everton has traveled to Barcelona to push for the duo. Already there were strong rumors that Digne could leave for Everton, but now we are hearing that both he and Mina could leave as a package deal.

The rumored price for the pair is in the region of 50 million euro.

The two were backups for Barça last season. Digne could be replaced by B teamer Marc Cucurella in the rotation. Meanwhile, Barcelona have already secured the signing of Clément Lenglet at centerback.

Denis: ‘I want to play much more this season’

The midfielder wants to establish himself as a key first team piece

The departure of Andrés Iniesta has undeniably left a gigantic hole in the Barcelona midfield for the following season. And Denis Suarez is hoping to be the player that takes advantage and becomes a key first team member.

Speaking after Barça’s first training session in Portland as part of their United States tour, Denis spoke to reporters and made it clear: he not only wants to stay at the club this season, but wants to be a lot more than just a rotation player.

“I’m really looking forward to the new season and hopeful that it will be the year when I definitively take that step forward and play much more than in previous years.

“That’s the sensation I have every season, but perhaps more than ever this year. Some important players have left the club, above all in my position, and I want to take advantage of those absences.

”[Iniesta’s] departure is huge for us. I don’t intend to compare myself with him, but it’s true we have some similar characteristics. Now he’s gone, I hope to take advantage of the situation and play more minutes.

“I’ve spoken with [Valverde] and he knows that my intention is to stay. His intention is that I stay, too. I’m preparing for the season in the best way possible and I will try to convince him that I can play from the off.

”He wants me to take a step forward this year. I know what I have to give and I think I have the ability to play a lot more minutes, a lot more than I’ve played in my first two years with the first team and I hope that will be the case.”

Source: ESPN

With Arthur needing a while to adapt and Carles Aleñá unavailable due to injury, Denis will definitely play a lot of minutes early on. Can he make a statement for the rest of the season? We’ll find out.

Barça completes first day of workouts at Nike World Headquarters | FC Barcelona
Some places, it turns out, are just like home. Although FC Barcelona’s Wednesday workouts took place some 9,000km (5,600 miles) from the friendly confines of the Ciutat Esportiva, it didn’t feel much different from an ordinary day of preseason practices.

Malcom to be presented on Thursday in Portland | FC Barcelona
Barça’s newest signing, Malcom, arrived in Portland on Wednesday evening and will be officially unveiled as a new Barça player on Thursday, in a series of events to be held at Nike World Headquarters, beginning around 12 noon local time with a press conference that can be streamed live on Barça Video and Barça’s official YouTube and Facebook pages.
