All things considered, it hasn't been a very good week for Real Madrid. Kicked out of the Copa del Rey for fielding the ineligible Denis Cheryshev in Cadiz on Dec. 2, both appeals lodged by the club have failed to see them reinstated. On Thursday, Karim Benzema was provisionally suspended by the France Football Federation over the striker's implication in an ongoing case of alleged extortion involving international teammate Mathieu Valbuena.

Jackson Martinez is close to regaining full fitness as Atletico Madrid confirm the striker is "in the final phase" of his recovery from an ankle injury. Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has reportedly dismissed Chelsea striker Diego Costa's suggestion he could return to the Vicente Calderon. Costa left Atletico for Chelsea in 2014 and played a starring role in last season's Premier League title success, but the 27-year-old has been linked with a move back for several months.

Granada climbed out of the Primera Division relegation zone thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Levante. Both goals came from 18-year-old Venezuelan Adalberto Penaranda - his first and second for the club. He broke the deadlock on 48 minutes and then restored the visitors' lead late on after Simao Mate had got the hosts level.

Sevilla FC 2-0 Sporting Gijon - ESPN FC
Kevin Gameiro scored a late brace to give Sevilla a deserved 2-0 home win over Sporting Gijon. After Luis Hernandez was dismissed Gameiro slammed home a penalty, and five minutes later he turned in a cross from Yevhen Konoplyanka to seal the points.

Las Palmas 1-0 Real Betis - ESPN FC
Substitute Willian Jose struck in the final minute of stoppage time to give Las Palmas a much-needed 1-0 victory at home to Real Betis. The Canary Island outfit remain in the relegation zone after a first win in four league games, but are now just one point and one place from escaping the bottom three, while Betis remain 11th, on 19 points.

La Roja head to France next summer with the intention of becoming the first team to win four European titles, and they will kick their campaign off against Czech Republic in Toulouse on June 13, before facing Turkey in Nice four days later and rounding things off against 2012 rivals Croatia in Bordeaux on June 21.
