It was not a great game from Digne offensively. In comparison to Alba who is in sensational form, Digne was a very mediocre presence.

Talking points from Barcelona's Copa del Rey win over Murcia

FC Barcelona News: 30 November 2017; Barcelona Ease Past Real Murcia, Two Youngsters Make Debut

Barça sails past Murcia, 5–0, and into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey | FC Barcelona
Five different players contributed goals on Wednesday evening as the Copa del Rey’s three-time defending champion, FC Barcelona, went full steam ahead into the last 16, easily sailing past Real Murcia, 5-0, before 68,775 fans on the Club's annual Member Solidarity Day at Camp Nou.

Ernesto Valverde: The attitude was excellent | FC Barcelona
“In this type of game you try and avoid surprises and the best way to do it is to play with pace and dynamism. Both in the first leg and in the second leg we were good in that aspect and having got through to the last 16 leaves a pleasant taste in our mouths,” said Valverde after goals from Alcácer, Piqué, Aleix Vidal, Denis Suárez and one from the B team striker Arnaiz.

HIGHLIGHTS: Barça 5 Murcia 0 | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona are now in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey. A 5-0 win over Murcia in the second leg of their last 32 tie at Camp Nou gave them an 8-0 aggregate victory. On the scoresheet were Paco Alcácer, Piqué, Aleix Vidal, Denis Suárez and Jose Arnaiz in a game in which the blaugranes dominated the Second Division B side from start to finish.

Oriol Busquets and David Costas debut with the first team | FC Barcelona
Murcia were well beaten by FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie (5-0). It was a match that will be remembered by Oriol Busquets and David Costas as both Barça B players debuted with the first team, playing their first minutes under Ernesto Valverde.

Why Luis Suarez is struggling in Ernesto Valverde’s new-look Barcelona

The striker is isolated and lacking support

Luis Suárez is a man all alone.

In a season full of the unexpected for Football Club Barcelona, Luis Suárez has gone from a veritable superstar to a struggling has-been in the eyes of his most ardent critics but why?

There’s no singular definitive answer to such a question but beyond the usual suspects of age and injury lies one possibility for Suárez’s poor form and it has more to do with the team’s new style of play than anything else.

Neymar was a big loss for the Blaugrana and Suárez alike but perhaps the biggest misfortune for the star forward this season occurred when Ousmane Dembele went down with injury.

The loss of the French youngster has seen coach Ernesto Valverde implement some changes to his team’s formation and in doing so has left Suárez to ply his trade virtually all alone up front.

Without an attacking player on each wing, Suárez has become an easier mark for defenders this season. No longer does he have the luxury of space, instead he’s forced to try and create his own chances and hold up the ball for his team. It hasn’t panned out well.

Last year’s Golden Shoe winner has scored five goals in La Liga this year and whilst it’s fair to say his health isn’t perfect there’s little doubt that it’s also a by-product of this new-look Barca team.

Valverde’s tactics may not have produced the most exciting brand of football but the team is flying high in La Liga and has advanced comfortably in the Champions League so it’s clear that his tactics are paying off but Suárez isn’t achieving the same kind of success individually.

Not only is he not scoring, the Uruguayan has consistently mistimed his runs resulting in him leading the five major leagues in being caught offside.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. With Barcelona winning on a consistent basis it’s unlikely that Suárez loses any playing time and with Dembele set to return soon, he will find himself back in a more comfortable role within the team.

I’m willing to bet we haven’t seen the last of Luis Suárez’s goalscoring feats.

Xavi Recalls First Time He Saw Lionel Messi: “You Already Knew He Was Different”

Xavi first saw his former Barcelona teammate as a 16-year-old

After Lionel Messi’s renewal with Barcelona finally became official, one of his former teammates, Xavi, was asked about the first time he saw the Argentine star.

This was around 14 years ago as Xavi was playing for the first team and Messi was still not quite there yet.

But, Xavi says, even then you could tell Messi was destined for greatness:

"They had already told me that a really good Argentine player was coming from the academy. They had told me his name, but I didn’t remember it. So when I saw him in training, he was 16 years old, but it was already apparent. We were doing one-versus-one training exercises with Lilian Thuram and Carles Puyol. And we were saying ‘Damn, this player is 16, and he's dribbling past professional defenders.’ You already knew he was different. You could see he had innate quality going one-against-one, he was fast, he could score, he could shoot. It was something amazing."

Valverde: Oriol Busquets proved he’s a Barcelona midfielder

The teenager made his debut on Wednesday

Ernesto Valverde was pretty content after watching his side demolish Murcia in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, a 5-0 win sealing an 8-0 aggregate victory.

The Barca boss handed Oriol Busquets a first-team debut and seemed pretty impressed with the teenager after the game.

“He is a Barcelona midfielder, that is clear," he said.

"He can help us in the passing game, although he must improve defensively.

"I would have liked him to play the whole match, however I didn't want to risk keeping four of our young players on the pitch."

Source | Marca

Busquets was replaced just after the hour mark by Sergi Roberto but did enough to shine and he says he will do everything he can to succeed at the club.

“I tried to get my nerves under control, remembering it's a game of football and I have to play as I know,” he said.

“I helped the team and we played a great match, achieving a good result. I must thank my team mates who helped me so much both on and off the pitch.“

"My great dream was to play here, since I first came to Barça, and I will do everything possible to succeed here.

“I’ve been working for this for many years, it’s been a very nice experience, the dream debut for every child who starts playing football from a very young age."

Source | FC Barcelona

It was a good night for Barca with Busquets having a good night along with fellow youngsters Carles Alena and Jose Arnaiz.

There were also loads of other positives, Denis Suarez put in a decent showing, Paco Alcacer was on target again and Sergi Roberto made his comeback from injury.

Barcelona 5-0 Murcia, 2017 Copa del Rey: Match Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s dominating win against Real Murcia.

Barcelona made easy work of the Segunda Division B side Real Murcia, earning a place in the Round of 16 with a dominating 5-0 win in the second leg and an aggregate win of 8-0. Five different scorers found the net for the Catalans as Paco Alcacer, Gerard Pique, Aleix Vidal, Denis Suarez and Jose Arnaiz all scored for Barcelona.

As soon as he match-squad was released it was evident that Ernesto Valverde was going to rotate heavily. Only a couple of first-team regulars started the match, namely Nelson Semedo and Pique, while role players like Gerard Deulofeu, Lucas Digne and Denis also started. Alcacer was also in the starting XI, hoping to impress Valverde. Two members of the Barcelona B team also took part from the opening whistle, Carles Alena and Oriol Busquets, the latter of which was making his senior debut.

To nobody’s surprise, Barcelona dominated from the get-go. While there was little urgency in Barcelona’s play, several players were looking to make an impression on the manager. Even though the tie was all but decided, Barcelona were looking to score a quick goal or two to make the remainder of the game a mere formality.

And the Catalans were indeed quick to find the back of the net, with Alcacer, again, scoring for Barcelona, likely putting more pressure on Luis Suarez. Denis and Aleix Vidal were combing on the left side of the Murcia penalty area. But the visitors were able to clear the ball away from Vidal, however, the clearance proved a perfect assist for Alcacer who made no mistake. Moments later, Barcelona were looking to double their lead, as Semedo and Vidal played a one-two on the right wing, with the former then providing a perfect ball to the far post to the wide open Deulofeu. The young winger, however, missed the ball completely and the chance went begging.

Barcelona continued to attack, but with the visitors showing very little intent of going forward, space in attack was at times difficulty to come by. And with the winner decided, there was no need to force the issue, so while Barcelona’s domination was undeniable, with possession hovering in the high 70s, scoring chances were few and far between. The clock continued to inch closer to the 45 minute mark and the halftime whistle, and with very few breaks in play the referee was quick to send the two sides for some rest.

The second half was similar to the first, with Barcelona attacking from the start, though this time around with some more conviction. Just ten minutes after the restart Barcelona appeared to have doubled their lead with Alena finding Deulofeu in the area, but after a slight redirection off a Murcia defender the ball clanged off the post.

The very next minutes though, Barcelona were up by two. The Catalans launched another good looking attack down the right flank, with Vidal making the run before squaring the ball into the danger area where Pique was left with a simple tap in finish. As soon as Pique ended celebrating he was substituted off the pitch as B-teamer David Costas replaced him.

Four minute later, Barcelona launched another strong attack down the right wing, with Alcacer and Vidal springing Semedo on the run. Semedo sent a perfect cross to the middle where Vidal headed the ball on target to make it three. Valverde completed his remaining two substitutions in the 62nd minute with Sergi Roberto returning from injury to replace Busquets while Semedo made way for another Barcelona B player, Arnaiz.

Barcelona continued to attack, with the majority of the Catalans good looking attacks coming down the right side where Vidal, and Semedo earlier, were combining excellently with Alena and Alcacer. But not to be outdone by the right side, in the 74th minute the left side of the Barcelona formation showed they can be deadly as well. Denis and Roberto played a stunning one-two which allowed the former to get behind the defense for a one-on-one with Alex Santome, and Denis made no mistake, beating the visiting goalkeeper just inside the far post.

Just five minutes later the Manita was complete. Murcia went forward on a rare attack and Barcelona were quick to punish them on the counter. Vidal intercepted the ball in Barcelona’s area and immediately started the counter with a long run. Deep in Murcia’s third he found Denis who extended the play further to the left with a lovely back-heel to Arnaiz. The youngster wasted no time and powered a shot to the far post to score his second Barcelona goal in two games.

Barcelona continued to attack, where Deulofeu was trying to improve the impression he left as some poor choices and some poor control left much to be desired. He came very close to doing so in the dying moments of the game when he showcased some of his stunning dribbling repertoire, but was later on only just denied by Santome.

With the final whistle coming after two minutes of added time, Barcelona secured a spot in the next round of the competition. Who they will face there remains to be seen, but there will be little time to rest as in just three days Barcelona host Celta Vigo.

Barcelona vs. Murcia, 2017 Copa del Rey: Final score 5-0, Valverde’s men cruise to victory

The hosts enjoyed themselves at Camp Nou on Wednesday

As expected, Barcelona comfortably secured their place in the next round of the Copa del Rey as they cruised to a 8-0 aggregate victory over Real Murcia at Camp Nou.

Ernesto Valverde handed a first-team debut to 18-year-old Oriol Busquets and there was also another start for 19-year-old Carles Alena in midfield too.

FIRST HALF

Barca bossed the first half but went in at the break with just a single goal to show for their efforts after a pretty tame first 45 minutes.

Paco Alcacer was the man to give the hosts the lead, heading Barca in front after Gerard Deulofeu had driven into the box.

The ball was then deflected into Alcacer’s path and he had the sample task of heading into the net.

SECOND HALF

The second half was much brighter, Deulofeu hitting the post before Gerard Pique slotted home Aleix Vidal’s pull-back to double Barca’s lead.

Vidal then got on the scoresheet himself, Nelson Semedo picking him out beautifully to head past Santome in the Murcia goal.

A raft of substitutions followed, with Sergi Roberto making his comeback from injury and setting up Denis Suarez for Barca’s fourth with a brilliant ball which Denis matched with a lovely finish.

Suarez then turned provider, backheeling for Jose Arnaiz to smash home from a tight angle to make it 5-0 and put the gloss on a fine second-half display.

Barcelona: Cillessen; Semedo (Jose Arnaiz, 63), Pique (Costas, 58), Vermaelen, Digne; Oriol Busquets (Sergi Roberto, 62), Alenia, Denis Suarez; Vidal, Alcacer, Deulofeu.

Goals: Alcacer (16), Pique (56), Vidal (60), Denis (74), Arnaiz (79)

Murcia: Santome; Vega, Mateos (Armando Ortiz, 64), Orfila, Melgar; Bravo, Sanchez (Jara, 69); Molinero, Renato (Pedro Martin, 60), Llorente; Nadjib.

FC Barcelona News: 29 November 2017; 16 Called Up to Face Real Murcia, Non-Copa Players Continue Training

Match Preview: FC Barcelona vs. Real Murcia in the return leg of the Copa del Rey last 32 | FC Barcelona
Thirty-six days after procuring a shutout victory at Real Murcia in the first leg of the Copa del Rey’s round of 32, Fútbol Club Barcelona is hosting the return leg at Camp Nou looking to finish the job and become one of the 16 teams still standing in what began as an 83-team tournament.

Copa del Rey squad announced | FC Barcelona
The full squad for the game is as follows: Jasper Cillessen, Nelson Semedo, Gerard Piqué, Denis Suárez, Paulinho, Gerard Deulofeu, Paco Alcácer, Lucas Digne, Sergi Roberto, Aleix Vidal, Thomas Vermaelen, Adrian Ortolá (31), Carles Aleñá (26), Oriol Busquets (30), Jose Arnaiz (37) and David Costas (39).

Ernesto Valverde offering playing time against Murcia | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona are in Copa del Rey action on Wednesday as they face Murcia at the Camp Nou (7.30pm CET, tickets here) and they’re doing so in a very comfortable position indeed after winning the first leg 3-0. And Ernesto Valverde was decidedly honest about the situation in his pre-game conference, readily admitting that he doesn’t see the need to field a ‘full strength’ team in order to gain passage to the last sixteen.

Training for non-Copa del Rey players | FC Barcelona
There is Copa del Rey action at the Camp Nou this evening, with a 7.30pm CET kick-off against Murcia (full details here). But even so, there was still activity on the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training ground for the players that manager Ernesto Valverde has decided to rest for a fixture that the 3-0 lead from the first leg has turned into a relative formality.

'Absurd' not to have goal-line tech in Spain - Barca's Ernesto Valverde | ESPN
Valverde refused to complain too much after the game, pointing out Barca had benefited from a similar situation when the ball went out of play in the buildup to Gerard Deulofeu's goal against Malaga. However, speaking at a news conference before Wednesday's Copa del Rey game against Real Murcia, he said: "What is absurd is that people in the top row of the stadium can see that the ball is in and those below them can't.

Willian among Barcelona's list of Coutinho alternatives | Goal
Barcelona have targeted Chelsea star Willian as an alternative should they fail in their attempts to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool. The Catalan side saw their approaches for Coutinho knocked back by Liverpool in the summer as the Anfield side demanded €200 million for him.

The 5 best Academy goals of the week | FC Barcelona
Two goals come from the U10B side; Gerard Fragoso and Aymar Llamas the players who found the net in the win against Espanyol. Two more come from the U14A side's victory over Nàstic, Andrián Bobi and Pol Muñoz the scorers. The list is completed by Xavi Simons with a great header for the U16B side against La Floresta.

Barça look to book their place in the next round of the Spanish Cup, and you can’t miss it

After a very exciting match against Valencia last Sunday, Barcelona return to action tonight with the second leg of their Copa del Rey Round of 32 against Real Murcia looking to secure their spot in the next round of the Spanish Cup.

Barça got off to a pretty good start in this matchup, winning the first leg 3-0 away from home in a pretty comfortable game. The Blaugrana used a lot of kids and young players who left a good impression in that game, and they’ll be looking to do the same tonight.

Among those players is Paco Alcácer, who has been constantly linked with a move away from Camp Nou over the last few months but is doing a really good job in the last few weeks and will take every opportunity to score goals and impress Ernesto Valverde enough to stay in the squad beyond January.

We’ll also get another chance to watch Carles Aleñá and José Arnáiz. Aleñá is the most talented young midfielder at the club and was wonderful in the first leg, and he’ll be looking to show his worth to get a first team spot next season. Arnáiz is a very good winger who scored in the first leg and is impressing at Barça B, and his debut at Camp Nou could give us an early look into a future Barcelona star.

We won’t see any of the big names like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez or Andrés Iniesta, but it’s a chance to see players who want to prove themselves and young kids who might be the next Messi, Suárez or Iniesta. So yeah, don’t miss this one. It’ll be fun!

Copa del Rey: Barcelona vs Murcia: Team News, Match Preview

Barça look to book their place in the next round with reserves and kids

Following an exciting La Liga draw against Valencia last Sunday, Barcelona return to action this midweek with the second leg of their Copa del Rey Round of 32 matchup with Real Murcia.

Barça basically confirmed their spot in the next round with a 3-0 win away from home last month, so this match is basically a friendly. We all know Murcia will not come close to overcoming a 3-0 deficit and they’re going to the Camp Nou to enjoy the experience and soak up all the history.

For Ernesto Valverde, this is a very good chance to give a rest to his main players and give minutes to reserves and youngsters from Barça B who are looking to prove themselves. Even though this is a meaningless game, the Blaugrana cannot afford to lose or even draw with Murcia. They have to win in convincing fashion, and the players who will get an opportunity need to prove their worth.

After all, this is a third division team and the Barça reserves already beat them 3-0. Surely Barça will win big again, right?

TEAM NEWS

Marc-André ter Stegen, Samuel Umtiti, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez have been given a day off and will not be in uniform for this one, which makes complete sense. Sergi Roberto is back from injury, though, and he’ll probably be in action for at least a few minutes.

In terms of the starting lineup, we should see a very similar team to the one that played in the first leg, which includes Carles Aleñá and José Arnáiz, some of the most exciting young players at the club who did a very good job in that game last month and could once again shine in this one.

If Barça are up to it and want to please the crowd, they can easily score multiple goals and give the Camp Nou a reason to celebrate. We already know they’re through, so it’s all about the attitude and the willingness to attack, score and win while playing good football. That’s all we want.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3)

Cillessen; Vidal, Piqué, Vermaelen, Digne; Paulinho, Aleñá, Denis; Deulofeu, Alcácer, Arnáiz

Real Murcia (4-4-2)

Santomé; Ortiz, Mateos, Orfila, Juanra; Escribano, Llorente, Jordan, Molinero; Nadjib, Elady

PREDICTION

This will be comfortable and easy: 5-0 Barça.

Barcelona’s Luis Suárez is Living in Offside

The player was caught offside a ridiculous six times against Valencia

Luis Suárez is the player who has been caught offside the most in the top 5 leagues. That’s in large part due to the fact that he was offside a total of six times in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Valencia.

Of course, being offside is often the product of a player making runs beyond the last defender, which, in general, is a good thing. You want your striker making those runs and taking risks.

But you don’t want him to mess up his timing so often he just becomes a source of lost possession. And that’s sadly what Suárez was for Barça against Valencia.

While most games he will (hopefully) not be offside that many times, the fact is it’s been a source of frustration in other matches as well.

Is it a physical problem? Is he mistiming his runs because he’s lost a step due to a knee issue, or age? Possibly, although players can adapt to such a thing.

He’s always been liable to go offside, but usually not this much. Usually, he makes it worth it. Let’s see how the season goes.

Valverde talks Dembele return, Sergi Roberto fitness and VAR ahead of Murcia clash

The Barcelona boss has had his say

Ernesto Valverde has faced the press ahead of Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash with Murcia and said he will be using some Barcelona B players in the game.

He also gave an update on Ousmane Dembele as well as Sergi Roberto and Andre Gomes and was also asked about VAR again, after Saturday’s clash with Valencia.

Here are the best bits...

Valverde on Murcia in the Copa del Rey

The team are in good shape physically and the idea to give some of the B team players who featured in Murcia a chance and those who have featured less

Valverde on if Ousmane Dembele will return for El Clasico

Saying the word impossible is tough to do. But I think it will be tough. I think it's tough because it was a big injury and we have to wait a bit more time to see how he's doing.

Before Christmas? I don't know. We won't risk him, we've been without him for a while. I'm excited that he really wants to get back with the team and is pushing hard.

When players do that and want to speed things up maybe it's better to slow them down. I think it’s good but we have to be cautious, just in case.

Valverde on Andre Gomes & Sergio Roberto

We'll see what today's training session looks like for them. They'll be back at some point. Tomorrow? I don't know. We are optimistic for Saturday.

Valverde on VAR

Hawkeye - we have this technology available in other sports and in other leagues I don't understand why it's not here.

Valverde on Messi’s goal against Valencia

What is absurd is that someone in the last row of the stadium sees the ball go in, and someone on the pitch doesn’t. I don't know if the linesman could see it. At the moment they scored, everybody saw it was a goal, the keeper had his head down. Leo was running to celebrate. Everybody knew it was a goal.

In European games they have a ref behind the goal, we don't have that.

So we look to try and improve this every year. These things can be decisive. Last year it happened to Barca at Betis. I think maybe one day we'll have the VAR.

Barcelona’s match against Valencia ended in a 1-1 draw, but maybe the score should have been different. A Lionel Messi shot was bundled over the line by the keeper, far past the line... slowly... but... well, you know by now. How did it not count?

In video from El Día Después, we see Messi, among others, speaking to the refs in disbelief at the call.

Messi’s “the ball’s here, the line’s here” gesture couldn’t be more clear. He also starts celebrating after scoring and is shocked to see it not being given. The likes of Andrés Iniesta and Jordi Alba also lodge complaints. Meanwhile, Luis Suárez has choice words for the referees.

The refs simply say they didn’t see it and say it’s tricky to judge those plays.

Sure, being a ref is hard, but is it that hard? Hmm, I’m not sure. Sometimes a ball will barely cross the line, or it’ll happen so quickly off the bar or something, you can’t notice in live time. This was far past the line, and because it was a slow, bouncing ball, it was quite evident for anyone to see it was a goal.

Nearly the whole Barcelona team was celebrating, confident the goal would be given. Of particular note, maybe Alba could have scored the rebound had he not turned to celebrate and then protest?

The mind boggles.

‘Everyone in Spain saw it was a goal’ - Tebas says La Liga needs VAR

Lionel Messi’s ghost goal has renewed the technology debate

As La Liga gets closer to having VAR in each of the league’s games next season, the need for the solution has become more obvious.

It became really obvious when over the weekend in one of the biggest league games of the season, Barcelona were not awarded what was clearly a goal by Lionel Messi.

La Liga president Javier Tebas is clearly all in on VAR, and found the incident a great chance to discuss the league’s need for technology.

"Everyone in Spain saw that it was a goal so how can I say that I didn't see it?" said Tebas.

"If I say that it wasn't a goal then people will see that I'm blind. Hopefully, next season, VAR can solve these issues.

"We need VAR technology. In LaLiga, we have been requesting it for two years and have a worked a lot on it

"There's a real willingness to bring it in on our part and from the Technical Committee of Referees and we'll have it next season."

"People are seeing just how VAR will work now as it is being used in other places," Tebas said.

"Technology still has problems. Everyone here talks about it but in Italy they have problems with the application of it.

"It is the same in Portugal and in Germany. I don't think we've made a fool of ourselves."

Javier Tebas | Marca

Despite Tebas’ words and the weekend’s controversy, there seems be no rush to implement VAR, but hopefully we should see it introduced in Spain next season.

Barcelona’s Right Flank Was a Defensive Weakness vs. Valencia

Ernesto Valverde has to sort it out

In Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Valencia, Ernesto Valverde took the unusual step of substituting his whole right side. Nelson Semedo and Ivan Rakitić made way for Aleix Vidal and Gerard Deulofeu, as Barcelona pushed forth for an equalizer.

The equalizer did come, from the left flank though - Jordi Alba volleying a sumptuous Messi pass.

Did the subs work? Maybe not. Neither Deulofeu nor Vidal had great performances - in fact, they were kinda bad.

Still it’s easy to see Valverde felt his right side was letting him down. Of Valencia's nine shots, eight came from the right side. Only one was from the left.

It didn’t help that with both Gerard Piqué and Javier Mascherano out, Barcelona were forced to play Samuel Umtiti on the right side of defense, despite the player favoring his left foot. Umtiti was great, but perhaps it would have helped to have Piqué there and allow Umtiti back to his natural spot.

Semedo has usually been solid for Barça, but he was less than stellar against Valencia. He was fooled when Barcelona conceded, and in fact, was targeted often by Gonçalo Guedes and José Luis Gayà. He showed sparkles, but clearly his performance was not to the manager’s liking, as he took the unusual step of substituting a fullback when needing a goal.

Rakitić didn’t provide enough support, and he was not enough of a threat on the ball to pin Valencia back, either. In fact, in the second half he was guilty of leaving Semedo with too much to deal with.

Deulofeu was shockingly wasteful, Vidal was imprecise as well. So what’s the answer? Well, two options are currently injured: Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembélé. Those two should be capable of starting, though it remains to be seen how.

Another source of optimism: Semedo probably is still adapting to Barcelona. He’s had a great start, but this was not his best game. There’s a chance that he will own that right flank, the way Dani Alves once did, one day.

Piqué will return. Rakitić has to return to form, or else he will be replaced. And Roberto and Dembélé are set to be fit in the near future. Valverde will have options.

With Ozil and Coutinho unlikely, will anyone arrive in January?

The German will not leave this winter, says Wenger

As January gets closer so does the reality that Barcelona are continuing to look at players that seem to have no way out of their current club. Two of the most talked about prospects are Philippe Coutinho and Mesut Ozil.

Everyone knows the strain that Barcelona went through in an attempt to get Coutinho from Liverpool over the summer. As the January window approaches, the reports from Spain and England seem to point towards more of the same come January.

When it comes to Ozil, that one seemed a bit more realistic. Until Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was asked about the likelihood that Alexis Sanchez and Ozil would be sold in January.

"As long as they are here, they give their best for the club.”

"In my head, they stay until the end of the season. Unless something unbelievable happens I don't see that changing."

Arsene Wenger | Sport

Is it possible that Barcelona will miss out on their high priority targets come January?

Will Barca sign anyone this winter? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

FC Barcelona News: 28 November 2017; Focus Turns to Copa del Rey, Ousmane Dembélé Continues Recovery

Dembélé's recovery continues at the Ciutat Esportiva | FC Barcelona
Every days sees the return of Ousmane Dembélé get that little bit closer even though at the moment there is no set date for the Frenchman to don the Barça shirt once again. The striker continues his recovery programme at the Ciutat Esportiva following the hamstring injury he suffered on 16 September against Getafe in the Coliseu Alfonso Pérez in the 2-1 win.

Recovery session after the draw at Mestalla | FC Barcelona
Without time to rest after the demanding game at Mestalla, FC Barcelona’s players returned to work on Monday at the Ciutat Esportiva. A recovery session was the order of the day, on pitch number three, but minds have already turned to the next match: the return of the Cup against Murcia.

How decisions impacted Barca draw at Valencia and their chances at the title | ESPN
In the aftermath of the high-class contest, we were left with the evidence of how decision-making can add drama, pathos, anger, self-sacrifice and, in some cases, satisfaction. Here are five examples from that wonderful, no-holds-barred, top-of-the-table clash.

When and where to watch FC Barcelona v Múrcia | FC Barcelona
Reigning champions FC Barcelona continue this season’s Copa del Rey campaign as they look to secure their place in the round of 16 in the second leg of the round of 32 against Real Múrcia. The blaugranas won the first leg 3-0 at the Nueva Condomina. This Wednesday 29 November at 7.30pm CET, Valverde’s team will look for another win at the Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi: Neymar's departure made Barcelona stronger defensively | ESPN
As a result, new coach Ernesto Valverde has had to build a new-look Barca side, with the emphasis moving back to the defence and the midfield. Barca have subsequently conceded just six goals in their last 19 games and Messi recognises the strengths of Valverde's new system.

Barcelona's Jordi Alba wants more respect from Valencia fans | ESPN
A win would have brought Valencia to within a point of leaders Barca, but Alba's late leveller -- his third in four starts for club and country -- ensured that Ernesto Valverde's side stayed four points clear. Alba was jeered throughout the game by Valencia fans, who have not forgiven him for his 2012 switch to the Camp Nou.

MY TOP 4: Who are Cillessen's idols? | FC Barcelona
The Copa del Rey is back and that means Jasper Cillessen will play. The Dutch goalkeeper was in the starting XI at the Nueva Condomina, where Barça beat Murcia by 0-3. Now we have the opportunity to review his top four idols, and curiously all four are Dutch.

How should Barcelona line up against Murcia?

Sergio Busquets is La Liga’s pass master

The Barcelona midfielder has been at it again

After another weekend of La Liga action, Barcelona still remain top of the table, still the division’s top scorers and with the best defence.

The Blaugrana’s midfield has come under scrutiny this season but once again Sergio Busquets has been peerless.

The stats also show that he is head and shoulders above the competitions when it comes to passes (and interestingly the next on the list is Samuel Umtiti who has a slightly better completion rate).

Busquets has featured in every La Liga game so far this season for Barca and all five Champions League games, as the club have also finished top of Group D.

He will, however, miss the Copa del Rey clash against Murcia after being given a deserved few days off by Ernesto Valverde.

Around La Liga: Sevilla’s Big Comeback, Atlético’s Big Win

Barcelona and Valencia seemed primed for the title race

Valencia drew 1-1 with Barcelona, and as they say “hay Liga” - but there was a lot to talk about around La Liga this week.

Sevilla did it again, this time coming down from 0-2 down to win 3-2 against Villarreal, this after coming down from 0-3 down to draw against Liverpool 3-3. Éver Banega got the winning goal after Gabriel Mercado won a penalty for the rojiblancos.

Atlético Madrid won, convincingly this time: 5-0. Antoine Griezmann got two goals an an assist, as did Kevin Gameiro, against a hapless Levante. Is this the return to form for Griezmann?

Real Madrid won as well, though not as convincingly. Cristiano Ronaldo tapped in a penalty he missed to secure the win 3-2 for los blancos. Málaga again felt hard done by as a goal was called off for a foul on a Madrid defender.

At the other end of the table, Las Palmas finally stopped the bleeding. They had lost eight on the bounce, but they got an equalizer today from Jonathan Vieria and managed to draw against Real Sociedad by a score of 2-2.

Valencia 1-1 Barcelona: Player ratings

Yours and Sam’s scores from Sunday’s game.

Marc-André ter Stegen

In a now standard performance, ter Stegen made many saves that kept Barça in the game. Not a lot he could have done for Valencia’s goal though.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Nélson Semedo

His positioning was poor for Valencia’s goal as he did not close down quick enough and allowed a runner in behind. They subsequently scored from this space.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

Samuel Umtiti

Three tackles and four interceptions show Umtiti was Barça’s best central defender in this game. Valencia are a good attacking side and Umtiti needed to use his pace and posting to stop them. The goal came from a Semedo mistake so Umtiti can’t really take the blame. Although he did seem to lose track of where Rodrigo was behind him.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Thomas Vermaelen

Given his long absence from the team, Vermaelen did reasonably well on his return. He also had the chance to make it a dream comeback with a goal but he fired his header over the bar.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 8

Jordi Alba

A fantastic perfroamce from Alba which he topped off with a great finish. The trademark Jordi Alba run in behind has been less frequently seen since Xavi departed but it was on show here. The ball from Messi was perfect and Alba showed a striker’s technique to finish.

Your rating: 9

Sam’s rating: 9

Ivan Rakitić

Looked ineffectual again out on the wing.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

Sergio Busquets

Pivotal in ensuring Barcelona weren’t hurt on the break as they pushed men forward looking for a goal. Made three tackles and two interceptions.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 7

Andrés Iniesta

Kept Barcelona’s play moving along before being replaced in the 71st minute.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 7

Paulinho

With Barcelona often restricted to having long shots, this played into Paulinho’s skill set.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Luis Suárez

Suárez really does look like a shadow of the player he once was. Whether it’s because he has been nursing an injury or he is just shot of confidence, the Valencia game was another example of where he offered almost nothing.

Your rating: 5

Sam’s rating: 5

Lionel Messi

Scored a legitimate goal in the first half that should have been given. The lack of goal-line technology saved Valencia from going behind. As usual, Messi was the most creative but the lack of width in the team did harm him. With the Valencia defence able to be compact it limits the space Messi has and thus impacts his effectiveness.

Your rating: 9

Sam’s rating: 8

Gerard Deulofeu

Just looks out of his depth compared to the rest of the squad. He injected some pace but his final ball came to nothing.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 5

Denis Suárez

Looked lively during his time on the pitch.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Aleix Vidal

Contirubuted towards a goalscoring chance in his 20 minutes of game time.

Your rating: 6

Sam’s rating: 6

The Team

Against a good opponent, Barcelona did well to come from behind and rescue a point.

Your rating: 8

Sam’s rating: 8

Ernesto Valverde

His substitutions made a difference and his post-match comments were also very impressive.

Your rating: 7

Sam’s rating: 7

Ousmane Dembele says he’ll be training with the Barcelona first team in two weeks

He’s closing in on a return to action

Ousmane Dembele should be back in training within the next two weeks according to one of the best sources of information on the matter, himself. In an interview with Canal+ over the weekend Dembele highlighted the hard work that he’s put in, and gave us a timeline to look forward too.

“In two weeks, I’ll start working with the squad again. Has my care programme accelerated my recovery? Yeah, I’d say so. I’ve worked every day – even holidays and every Sunday to regain my fitness.”

Ousmane Dembele | Source

Dembele hasn’t been able to fully adjust to playing within the Barcelona squad since being out. He was injured in his third appearance for the club just as he was appearing to fit within the Barcelona scheme.

His return will be welcome news for Barcelona. Despite being first in both La Liga and their Champions League group, they could use more offensive firepower. Dembele is getting back into full fitness just in time.

Talking points from Valencia 1-1 Barcelona

How the papers reacted to Valencia vs Barcelona as Messi denied goal

الأحد، 26 نوفمبر 2017

Jordi Alba calls for video technology after Barcelona’s draw with Valencia

The full-back says such mistakes can prove costly

Barcelona defender Jordi Alba called for technology to be implemented in La Liga after his side’s 1-1 draw with Valencia at Mestalla.

The full-back hit Barca’s equaliser to snatch a point and preserve the club’s unbeaten record.

However, it could have been a different story if Lionel Messi’s shot, which goalkeeper Neto fumbled over the line, had been allowed to stand.

Speaking after the match, Alba was not impressed at all by the match officials.

"Everyone saw the cancelled goal," Alba said.

"We watched it on video and this happened before against Betis too. The cancelled goal was clear. Video technology is needed."

"The same thing [cancelled goal] happened to us last season. We lost the league because of those points.

"I was in the middle of the field and even I could see the ball had crossed the line."

Source | beIN SPORTS

It was a really poor decision by the officials, yet as Ernesto Valverde has pointed out, Barca were also helped this season by a poor decision in their win over Malaga.

Valverde gives his view after Barcelona denied clear goal in draw with Valencia

The Barca boss has had his say on the controversial incident

Ernesto Valverde was pretty composed after Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Valencia which saw Rodrigo open the scoring before Jordi Alba equalised late on.

However, the main talking point of the game was how Barca were denied a clear goal when Neto fumbled a Lionel Messi shot over the line.

It was pretty obvious, even without replays, the ball had gone over, but it was missed by the match officials.

Obviously Valverde was asked about the incident after the game and he gave a pretty classy reply. Here’s what he said...

"In our game against Malaga, we had a goal count when the ball had clearly gone out," he said.

"We all agree that in these very clear plays, you don't need the replays.

"However, we are still facing these moments where a ball crosses the line and it can't be seen."

Source | Marca

The Barca boss also seemed pretty happy with the point, that keeps Barca four points clear at the top of La Liga.

"It was a hard fought game," he said.

"We were exposed because they are great on the counter attack.

"We know they are a strong team at home and in the end we earned a draw, it was a good game."

It was a great first half from Barca at Mestalla although the failure to award the goal was a really poor miss from the officials, surely it’s time for goalline technology in La Liga?

Valencia 1-1 Barcelona, 2017 La Liga: Match Review

Recap of the action from the highly anticipated top of the league match-up.

In a very entertaining match at the electric Mestalla stadium, both Barcelona and Valencia extended their unbeaten streaks to start the 2017-18 season. Rodrigo Moreno “opened” the scoring in the second half with a tap in while Jordi Alba equalized late with a lovely finish. But Barcelona and Lionel Messi were robbed of a clear goal in the first half that surely would’ve altered the flow of the game.

From the opening whistle Barcelona dominated possession, pinning the hosts deep almost immediately. But Valencia defended excellently and didn’t allow an inch to the visitors. Barcelona seemed to be inching closer, but inside the 25-yard-line there was almost no space whatsoever, and apart from a powerful long-range shot from Paulinho that warmed the right palm of goalkeeper Neto Barcelona had nothing to show for.

Valencia weathered the early storm and countered with a couple decent looking attacks, but Barcelona’s defense, which saw Thomas Vermaelen replace the suspended Gerard Pique, stood tall. While Marc-Andre ter Stegen didn’t have to make a save in the early going, Valencia quickly showed they are a dangerous team in attack. On the other end of the pitch, Neto had to make his second save in the 10th minute, with Ivan Rakitić firing from distance, but the Brazilian was perfectly positioned.

Valencia were seemingly content to allow Barcelona majority of ball possession while they themselves would wait for a chance on the counter attack. But Barcelona did an excellent job controlling the ball and limiting turnovers. And whenever a turnover did happen, the Catalans were quick to pressure the Valencia ball-carrier to create a turnover of their own. Barcelona’s work-ethic was excellent, but so was Valencia’s defensive positioning.

And it was from a turnover deep in Valencia’s area that saw Barcelona take the lead in the 30th minute. Or so it seemed. The quick counter saw Luis Suarez set up Messi on the edge of the area. Messi fired quickly on goal and Neto made a terrible mistake, letting the ball bounce past him, clearly dropping over the goal-line. But while Barcelona players started celebrating, Neto dove back and swatted the ball back in play. Referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva waved play on and Valencia went on a counter attack from which they very nearly scored. As if it wasn’t enough that this happened to Barcelona in recent history, the Catalans were robbed of an important goal in an away game once again and no amount of complaining was going to make the referee make the correct call.

Officially still scoreless, Barcelona continued to dominate, but hitting the back of net proved a taller task – because just getting ball across the line is clearly not enough for Barcelona. Just three minutes after taking the lead being robbed, Messi took a shot from a long-range free kick, but Neto made a good save. The Brazilian had to make another good save in the 42nd minute, this one on Suarez as he was played through by Messi. Messi pounced on the rebound, but his shot was blocked.

Barcelona almost completely shut down Valencia after a couple attacks in the opening minutes, but a late counter led Gonçalo Guedes could’ve resulted in a different story, but his back-pass to Simone Zaza was slightly off the mark and the Italian couldn’t get a shot off.

With no added time, the referee whistle for half time at which the two sides where shockingly/controversially still tied at zero. It was arguably one of the best halves Barcelona played all season, but due to the incompetence from those in yellow and black Barcelona had nothing to show for.

Valencia came storming out of gates after the restart, looking to catch Barcelona flat-footed. The hosts quickly pinned Barcelona back and Barcelona struggled to contain their attacks. Zaza came close to (officially) open the scoring in the 51st minute with a shot from the edge of the area, but his try whistled wide of the far post. Barcelona looked to counter the very next minute after a corner kick, but Vermaelen just couldn’t direct the header on goal.

Ter Stegen was really tested for the first time in the 57th minute on a quick counter attack. Guedes was left one-on-one with Umtiti and the Portuguese youngster made easy work of the Frenchman. But ter Stegen was quick off his line to close down the angle and he managed to cover the rebound as well. Barcelona were living dangerously and Valencia managed to break through at the one-hour mark. Guedes and Jose Gaya combined excellently on the left wing and the latter then found Rodrigo Moreno in the middle for the easy tap in and the lead.

Valencia tasted blood and they were suddenly attacking in numbers. Barcelona were also forced to open up more now that they were, despite scoring a legal goal, down 1-0. But Barcelona needed help in attack, and Ernesto Valverde clearly saw that, bringing on Gerard Deulofeu for Rakitić in the 68th minute. Just three minutes later Denis Suarez replaced Iniesta.

But motivated by the goal, Valencia had all the momentum, while Barcelona, after utterly dominating the second best team in Spain for a half that they should’ve ended a goal up, couldn’t get anywhere near Neto. Suarez did get a powerful shot on goal in the 76th minute but Neto was there to make the save.

Barcelona made their last substitution in the 80th minute, as Nelson Semedo made way for Aleix Vidal. Despite struggling against a very compact Valencia side in the second half, Barcelona didn’t give up and the Catalans were rewarded for their perseverance in the 82nd minute. Messi sent a stunning over the top ball to the onrushing Alba on the left wing who acrobatically managed to not only make contact with the ball but also beat Neto. The ball also touched the back of the net, making the goal official.

Barcelona were pushing for the deserved winner but time was running out. Four minutes were added on but while Barcelona looked to attack, it was the hosts who had two excellent chances to win the game, but substitute Andreas Pereira and Zaza both missed the target on the counter attack. The final whistle came moments after Zaza’s shot, ending the game with a one-all draw.

While on paper that is not a bad result for Barcelona, nobody knows how this game would’ve unfolded had the referees call the game the way the rulebook says it should be called. But the Catalans will have no time to dwell on the controversy as on the 29th of November Real Murcia comes to visit the Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey.

Valencia vs Barcelona, 2017 La Liga: Final Score 1-1, Highly entertaining match ends in draw

It was great fun, but Barça should have won it

The most anticipated match of the La Liga season so far delivered, and then some. Valencia and Barcelona played a wildly entertaining game at the Mestalla and gave us plenty of exciting moments. Valencia scored once and Barça scored twice, but because this is Spain one of Barça’s goals was inexpicably disallowed and what would have been a fantastic win for the Catalan giants was negated by a ridiculous human error.

FIRST HALF

For those expecting a very tough match for Barça, what they got was a complete domination from the Blaugrana. The visitors not only had full control of possession, but they also threatened Valencia multiple times thanks to their passing and movement off the ball. The mighty counter-attacking prowess of Valencia was never in evidence, and Barça were undoubtedly the better team for the entire 45 minutes.

They also got a goal to show for their dominance when Lionel Messi fired a shot from distance that went through the legs of Neto. The Brazilian goalkeeper went back and took the ball out of the goal, but the ball had already crossed the line. The referee and his assistant never saw the ball crossing the line, and the goal wasn’t given.

At halftime, a brutally dominant performance from Barça with a deserved goal was negated by an unbelievable human error.

SECOND HALF

If the first half belonged to Barça, the second was controlled by Valencia, who began to press high up the pitch and constantly attack Barça with pace and intensity. The Blaugrana began to misplace easy passes and left big spaces for Valencia to attack, and they paid for it when José Gayà was free on the left side to put in a cross and find Rodrigo inside the box for the opener.

Valencia pressured even more immediately after their goal but Barça regained control of the match and started to push for an equalizer, which they got when Lionel Messi played a perfect pass over the top to Jordi Alba, who took it first time and scored a beautiful volley.

The final few minutes had Barça with possession trying to find a winner while Valencia sat back and tried to win it themselves on the counter, but neither team managed to make their plans work and the game ended in a draw.

If you think about how Barça dominated one half and how Valencia dominated the other, a draw seems fair. But when you think about how Barça scored two completely legal goals and Valencia only scored one, this is really hard to accept. At least we didn’t lose, and we played quite well for most of the game. Still leaders, still unbeaten, still four points ahead of a very good Valencia side.

Lionel Messi and Barcelona denied clear goal against Valencia

Replays confirmed it was clearly over the line

The curse of the ghost goal has struck Barcelona yet again with Ernesto Valverde’s side denied a clear goal in the first half at Mestalla.

Lionel Messi struck a shot which goalkeeper Neto made an absolute mess of, fumbling the ball which rolled backwards over the line before he scooped it out.

Check it out for yourselves:

Rather worryingly, Barca then completely lost their heads as they protested to the officials while Valencia played on and carved out a chance of their own.

Of course there’s no VAR in La Liga this season, you can be sure the calls for it to be introduced will be ramped up after this game.

Stats: Why Barcelona Leads La Liga Despite Neymar’s Exit and Luis Suárez’s Form

Hint: the defensive record plays a big part

After Neymar was sold, people assumed Barcelona would struggle to replace his offensive contribution. The situation should be even more desperate given Luis Suárez’s irregular form. But Barcelona are atop La Liga. Why? Let’s look at the stats

68% then vs. 63% now

Barcelona’s top three scorers (Neymar, Suárez, and Lionel Messi) accounted for 68% of their goals in La Liga last season. That number is down to 63%, with Suárez and, surprisingly, Paulinho being part of the top 3 scorers. Barcelona’s #2 and #3 scorers have gone from contributing 36.21% of the goals to 27.27%. Despite the loss of Neymar and Suárez’s form, the team has come up with goals. Despite his struggles, Suárez continues to score, and his brace last weekend helped. Meanwhile, Paulinho has provided an unexpected spark. Meanwhile, the likes of Denis Suárez, Paco Alcácer, Sergio Busquets, Sergi Roberto, Gerard Deulofeu, and Gerard Piqué have gotten on the scoresheet already.

31.9% then vs. 36.36% now

Messi’s individual contribution as a percentage has gone up, but his goals per game average is basically the same: from 0.97 then to 1.00. That means Messi is scoring the same, but since the team as a whole is scoring a bit less, he’s shouldering the load a bit more. Their goals per game last season was 3.05, and now it’s 2.75. BUT...

0.97 then vs. 0.33 now

Here’s the biggest one. Ernesto Valverde’s men have only conceded 0.33 goals per game, a huge improvement over last season’s 0.97 goals against per game. Of course, it makes a huge difference that Barcelona are yet to play the toughest teams, such as Valencia (today!) and Real Madrid. But it’s still a startling difference.

Valencia vs Barcelona live stream: Lineups, Kickoff time, TV listings, How to watch La Liga online

Barça play their biggest match of the season tonight, and this is one you just cannot miss.

Welcome to the biggest match of the La Liga season for Barcelona. The Catalan giants have made a historic start to the league campaign, but this could be the game that defines their season and proves whether or not they are real title contenders.

The Blaugrana travel to the Mestalla, one of the toughest stadiums in Europe, to face Valencia in the most anticipated match of the season so far. The Bats have enjoyed a revolution under new manager Marcelino García Toral, who made them a powerhouse in Spain once again.

Valencia are in second place at the moment, four points behind Barça but have clearly played much better football than the league leaders, who are still struggling to play their best stuff under Ernesto Valverde. Valencia are scoring goals for fun and have won their last eight league games, and they’ll provide a true test for Valverde’s men.

If Barça are able to win this one in convincing fashion, then almost all questions will be answered. There are many injury problems and the club’s record signing is not available until January, so defensive solidity and the brilliance of Lionel Messi have been the biggest keys for Barça’s success. If they beat Valencia despite all the problems and criticism, then there’s really not a lot left to complain about when it comes to this version of Barça.

This will be a really great match, and this is an opportunity for Barça to prove themselves against one of the best teams in Europe this season. You have to watch this one. Seriously, don’t miss it.

The top two teams, and highest scorers in the division, meet for a ‘super Sunday’ La Liga clash at Mestalla. Both are still unbeaten and a win for either side could have a significant impact. Should Barça emerge victorious from a stadium they’ve not lost at in the League since 2007, they’ll end the weekend seven points clear, however, a win for Valencia will bring them to within a point of their visitors.

After ensuring passage into the last sixteen of the Champions League, Ernesto Valverde has put the final touches to his preparations for the second project of a testing week. On Sunday at 8.45pm CET, league leaders Barça visit the home of second placed Valencia.

Six years since last top-of-the-table clash at Mestalla | FC Barcelona
Top-of the-table clashes are a regular feature of Barça seasons, but we are less used to them being against Valencia. Not that it hasn’t happened several times in the past, the most recent meeting when one of the sides was first and the other second being the one in game five of the 2011/12 season. Like now, it was the Catalans who were in pole position, but Mestalla where the game was played.

Managing Messi threat is not straightforward, insists Valencia boss Marcelino | Eurosport
[Marcelino] added: "I think that winning this game is very difficult. We want to be the first team to win against Barca in the league this season. For us there are three points at stake, and we want to see ourselves compete against a great rival with the dream of winning. We respect them - but we want to win.”

Barcelona announce squad for La Liga match against Valencia

Ernesto Valverde has called up 18 players for the trip to Mestalla

The next Barcelona match is upon us! The Blaugrana play their biggest game of the La Liga season so far in what promises to be an incredibly difficult visit to Valencia, and Ernesto Valverde has called 18 players to be in uniform tonight.

This is the full squad:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Jasper Cillessen

Defenders: 2. Nelson Semedo, 18. Jordi Alba, 19. Lucas Digne, 22. Aleix Vidal, 23. Samuel Umtiti, 25. Thomas Vermaelen, 39. David Costas

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 6. Denis Suarez, 8. Andrés Iniesta, 15. Paulinho Bezerra

Forwards: 9. Luis Suárez, 10. Lionel Messi, 16. Gerard Deulofeu, 17. Paco Alcácer

There’s just one change to the squad that traveled to Italy to face Juventus, and it’s a big one: Gerard Piqué is suspended for yellow card accumulation and with the injury to Javier Mascherano, Valverde was forced to call Barça B defender David Costas. Along with Piqué and Mascherano, Ousmane Dembélé, Sergi Roberto, André Gomes, Rafinha Alcântara and Arda Turan miss out due to injury.

Predicted starting XI (4-4-2):

Ter Stegen; Semedo, Umtiti, Vermaelen, Alba; Alcácer, Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez

The match starts on Sunday night at 8:45pm (Barcelona & Nigeria) / 7:45pm (UK) / 2:45pm ET, 11:45am PT (USA) / 1:15am IST (India, Monday), and you can join us to follow and comment all the action.

La Liga: Valencia vs. FC Barcelona: Team News, Match Preview

The toughest test of the season is here for the league leaders. Can they get the job done?

Following a tough Champions League draw against Juventus in midweek, Barcelona return to action in La Liga to play what is without a doubt the toughest test of the season so far for the league leaders.

Barça travel to the Mestalla on Sunday night to face Valencia. And although Barça are the leaders with 11 wins and no losses from their first 12 games, there is absolutely no question that Valencia are the best team in La Liga this season. The Bats have played stunning football under new manager Marcelino Toral García, who quickly turned them from a laughing stock into the powerhouse.

They’re built to defend well and simply destroy teams on the counter, but they can also pass the ball if necessary and score goals for fun. They’re also unbeaten and are currently on an eight-game winning streak, the second best in the Top 5 European leagues behind Manchester City.

Marcelino will not be on the sideline for this game due to a two-match ban after he was sent off against Espanyol last week, but his team will surely be very well prepared to face Barça. Marcelino never beat Barça as manager and lost 11 of his 14 meetings with the Blaugrana, but given the form of Valencia and the strange state of Barça under Ernesto Valverde, this could definitely be the first win for Marcelino, a huge statement for Valencia and a really worrying result for the Catalans.

TEAM NEWS

Valverde surprised a lot of us by benching Lionel Messi against Juventus and only bringing him on after 55 minutes, but the performance wasn’t surprising. Barça once again were very ordinary, playing well enough to get the result they needed but not well enough to excite fans. Barça are unbeaten for more than three months but they haven’t playing well more than three times, and there’s always the worry that they’ll be figured out by a really good team that’ll expose their flaws.

Many expect that team to be Valencia, but if Barça can slow down such an explosive attack and find a way to score multiple goals against such a good defense, then Valverde deserves a little credit, right? He won’t be given that, but a win at Mestalla, which is a historically tough stadium for Barça, will show that this team is not a fluke. At least until the next game against a big team that will finally expose them, AMIRITE?

In terms of the starting lineup, there are two real doubts: who will start in the place of Gerard Piqué? The favorite is Thomas Vermaelen, though Lucas Digne can also play as a center-back and could be a surprise choice from Valverde. The other question is whether or not Paco Alcácer starts alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, and recent history suggests that Paulinho will be in the team and the 4-4-2 formation away from home will be chosen once again.

But you know what? I think Valverde really likes what Paco has done in recent games and will give him a go here. I’m of course wrong, but maybe I’m right!

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-4-2)

Ter Stegen; Semedo, Umtiti, Vermaelen, Alba; Alcácer, Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez

Valencia (4-4-2)

Neto; Montoya, Gabriel, Garay, Gayà; Soler, Parejo, Kondogbia, Guedes; Rodrigo, Zaza

PREDICTION

I am REALLY nervous about this one, but I’ve decided to trust my Barça: 2-1 to the visitors.

Valverde talks favourite Messi moments, Vermaelen, Alcacer and Valencia

Ernesto Valverde has faced the press ahead of Sunday’s eagerly-anticipated clash with Valencia at Mestalla.

Of course Lionel Messi’s new contract dominated most of the questions but the Barca boss also talked about his defence for tomorrow and Paco Alcacer.

Here are the best bits...

Valverde on Messi renewal

I think it’s very positive news, people can relax now. We have been waiting for it to be official. The signature is done so there should be fewer questions for him and me on that topic and everyone can relax. We are happy for him, happy for everyone and its great news for everybody.

Valverde on Vermaelen and Umtiti

I think when there's a situation like this with two left footed central defenders, people think it’s strange however when you play with two right footers people don't think it’s so strange. So there’s a contrast there. They are both internationals and they will have to play a little bit differently but it's no so different from when he play with Mascherano. It's an important game and I trust both Umtiti and Vermaelen. I think we're covered for the game tomorrow.

Valverde on David Costas

We are also going to take David Costas of the B team with us to Valencia. He has experience and a different profile, it can help.

Valverde on Valencia

They are in the middle of a very good streak, a winning streak. They have a good coach, good players, they have a clear plan and they work well. They don't have competitions in midweek that can wear them down. I think they are primed to have a good season in La Liga. Based on all that they should do good things. They are up there in the standings, we have to realise that this is a rival for us.

Valverde on Real Madrid and Atletico

Look at the maths, there are a lot of games left, we know how good our rivals are. People look at the 10 point difference and we know they are behind us but the team right behind us is four points behind and tomorrow it could just be one. So we are focused on tomorrow.

Valverde on Barcelona

We hope everything improves, even when things go well you want things to improve. There are things I'd like to being doing better, we don’t dominate possession as much as I'd like, or create scoring chances as much as I'd like. But I understand there are games when we have scored a lot of goals. I’ve alway said we are trying to generate possessions and scoring chances and I think we are not giving up many

Valverde on Paco Alcacer

We want him to score. He’s a player who is always playing way up high trying to get open and he's trying to score goals and we are trying to help him do that. Luis Suarez is also trying to do that and I'm trying to get Alcacer a little bit out on the wing but in decisive moments, defences usually close that hole up and we want him to work hard and always realise that the defence is always worried about, and when they move back a step, he can move forwards.

Valverde on his favourite Messi moments

I think it would probably be when I was coaching another team. If I had to choose just one, one image of Messi a lot of things come into my head unfortunately the one he scored against us in the Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey final when I was coaching Athletic. I think for Barca fans it was an extraordinary goal, but for us not so much! Now I'm here, the goal against Getafe because of the similarities with Maradona’s goal. I think the header against Manchester United in the Champions League final too.
