Barca won’t have learned any lessons if Aguero and Wijnaldum end up on the payroll

Liverpool FC v Manchester City - Premier League

Too old, too costly

A couple of days before the 2015 presidential elections, this author sat down in a one-to-one interview with Joan Laporta.

What he told me then is virtually a mirror of his modus operandi now, and what got him elected this time around.

You can still find the interview if you wish to look for it.

Laporta insisted that La Masia was the pillar on which he would base his presidency. How it was the essence of what Barcelona were about.

It was one of a few reasons why he still believed that Barca were ‘Mes que un club.’

After Josep Maria Bartomeu’s disastrous tenure, when the importance of the academy was lost, it’s going to take all of Laporta’s powers of leadership to recover the previous model within a few short years.

Clearly, it won’t be an overnight process, though Ronald Koeman is already helping the club to move in that direction.

What’s interesting, ahead of the summer transfer window, are the persistent rumours surrounding Gini Wijnaldum and Sergio Aguero.

Both do not fit with the type of Barca that Laporta has promised and indeed, got elected for.

Though there’s an understanding that by bringing the Argentinian to the club could help to keep Lionel Messi in situ, such a move would send out totally the wrong message.

At 33 by the time he would pull on a Barca shirt in earnest, Aguero would have two years - at best - left at the top level, and that’s if he remains off of the treatment table.

The risks and expenditure in terms of salary more than outweighs the benefits.

Is he better than Martin Braithwaite? Yes. Would his experience benefit the team in the short term? Potentially. Does he stop a La Masia product from potentially fulfilling their first-team aspirations? Absolutely.

Ditto Wijnaldum.

Real Sociedad v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images

Whilst Koeman can’t necessarily be blamed for wanting to coach players that he’s worked with before, Barca already have a player in position, in Ilaix Moriba, for whom great things are expected.

He is a work in progress and far from the finished article, but the contention is that he far better represents what Barca are supposed to be under Laporta than signing the Liverpool man.

At least with a player like Haaland, for example, the justification for potentially going after him is his age and future projection.

Things have been progressing nicely under the Dutchman. Let’s not spoil it now with a retrograde step or two.

Barcelona are preparing an offer for Lionel Messi

New president Joan Laporta is trying to keep his best player at the Camp Nou

FC Barcelona are preparing a new offer to keep Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou, according to a new report. Newly elected club president Joan Laporta has made public and private assurances to the Argentine star that the club will do everything in their power to keep him.

However, a concrete deal has not been presented yet. At this point, Messi awaits an offer of a new deal before committing himself to at least another year at Barcelona.

The club is expected to send a proposal in the coming weeks, which would then lead to meetings between the player and the team’s top brass.

Up to this point, Laporta has done a financial analysis of the state of the club to see what kind of money they can offer, and has made some “preliminary contact” with the player’s entourage.

Messi attempted to leave the club last summer to join Manchester City, but Barcelona prevented him from leaving.

Laporta’s win in the presidential elections has provided a fresh start for Messi, who may be convinced to stay. City, for their part, are reportedly giving up on getting Messi, whom they assume will stay in Catalonia. However, Paris Saint-Germain are understood to still be in the running for the Argentine’s signature.

Barcelona will also soon be working on the renewal of Ousmane Dembélé and Ilaix Moriba, both of who have deals that expire next year. This comes after the club successfully renewed Álex Collado, an important Barcelona B player.

Ansu Fati opens up on injury problems

Photo by Urbanandsport /NurPhoto via Getty Images

The youngster’s offered an update on social media

Barcelona teenager Ansu Fati has taken to Instagram to offer an update on his injury situation as he recovers from knee surgery.

Fati’s been out since November and it had been hoped he’d be back before the end of the season but there’s still no idea of when he will return to first-team action.

Indeed there have been reports instead that he’s suffered a series of setbacks and suggestions he may require further surgery.

Here’s what he’s had to say.

“A few years ago I had a serious injury, a fractured tibia and fibula, I spent almost a year without being able to play. There were many days of suffering and pain, but also a lot of learning, it helped me to appreciate the little details. With my family and all the professionals who helped me at that time, I promised myself to keep going and work harder than ever to do what I like the most !! Unfortunately, now I have to live a similar situation, which I will face with the same mentality. I want to thank all those people who follow me and support me on a daily basis. Football is my life and no matter how many obstacles there are, I will always have the illusion of continuing to fight for my dreams …”

Let’s hope Ansu recovers fully and comes back even stronger whenever he’s ready to return.

Barcelona Femeni into Champions League semi-finals

Manchester City v Barcelona - UEFA Women’s Champions League - Quarter Final - Second Leg - Manchester City Academy Stadium
Photo by Zac Goodwin/PA Images via Getty Images

A fourth semi-final in five years

Barcelona Femeni secured their spot in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday after knocking out Manchester City.

Lluis Cortes’s side had done most of the hard work in the first leg, winning 3-0, and go through 4-2 on aggregate despite losing the return 2-1.

The hosts opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Janine Beckie prodded home to raise hopes of an unlikely comeback.

Barcelona produced a strong response to going behind with Asisat Oshoala twice denied an equalizer by Lucy Bronze on the goalline.

Oshoala finally made it 1-1 just before the hour mark, slotting into an empty net, to all but secure Barcelona’s place in the last four.

Manchester City went on to win the game through Sam Mewis’s penalty, but it’s Barcelona who progress to a semi-final against Lyon or Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester City pull out of race to sign Lionel Messi - report

Manchester City Home Shirt with Messi on the Back

The English club think they have no real chance of signing the Argentine star

Manchester City have given up on signing Lionel Messi, according to a new report.

Last summer, Messi wanted to join the Citizens and leave FC Barcelona, but it never came to pass. He was compelled to stay at the Camp Nou, with Barcelona turning down any offers to negotiate from City.

With the departure of Sergio Agüero confirmed, the priority for City is to sign a younger striker to replace him, and Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund), Harry Kane (Tottenham), and Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan) are said to top the list.

Messi could in fact sign a pre-contract today if he wanted to, because he is less than six months from his contract expiring. But he is reportedly taking it slow and will only make a decision in the summer.

City reportedly think he will renew with Barcelona and that is one reason they are not making a push for him anymore. City had been trying to grab Messi for a long time now. They had the money to pay his massive salary and had appointed former Barcelona managers and executives such as Pep Guardiola, Txiki Begiristain, and Ferran Soriano. They also boasted having his personal friend and compatriot, Agüero, to entice him. But Messi has stayed loyal.

The English club is said to have accepted this and are unwilling to enter into a long transfer saga they would surely lose, unless the player himself makes an overture.

Right now, the two realistic options for Messi are to stay at Barcelona or leave for Paris Saint-Germain, who are making a serious attempt to sign the Argentine.

But new club president Joan Laporta is said to be growing in confidence that his best player will not leave him this summer.

The Barca B captain is staying at the Camp Nou

Barcelona confirmed on Wednesday that the club has executed the option to extend Alex Collado’s contract at the Camp Nou until 2023.

The moves secures the future of the Barca B captain with reports also circulating that he will be promoted to the first-team squad for next season.

It’s also being widely reported that Collado’s release clause has been increased and now stands at €100 million.

Mundo Deportivo are reporting Collado will link up with the first team for pre-season and it will then be decided whether he stays or goes out on loan.

It’s a deserved reward for Collado who has been a key figure for Barca B, scoring 16 goals in 77 appearances.

Yet he still seems to have some work to do to convince Ronald Koeman of his quality. Collado has played for the first team under Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien but is yet to appear since Koeman took charge.

Gerard Pique returns to Barcelona training

FC Barcelona v Sevilla - Spanish Copa del Rey
Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

The defender is back after knee trouble

Gerard Pique was involved in part of Barcelona’s training session on Wednesday morning as the team gear up for Monday’s La Liga clash against Real Valladolid.

The center-back has not featured since suffering another knee injury in the Copa del Rey semi-final win over Sevilla at the start of the month.

However, he does now appear to be close to a comeback and should be able to play a part in Barcelona’s run-in.

It’s not clear if Pique will be ready in time for Monday’s match, but he’ll be keen to return for the game after which is against Real Madrid on April 10.

Elsewhere, Sergi Roberto is expected to be passed fit some time this week after returning to training after a thigh injury.

It will be interesting to see what Ronald Koeman does when he has all his defenders available again. The Dutchman has switched systems recently to use three center-backs, which has worked well, and looks set to continue with his new formation.

Luis Enrique praises Jordi Alba ahead of Spain clash

The left-back is in good form for club and country

Luis Enrique and Jordi Alba have something of a complicated relationship but the Spain boss has been full of praise for the Barcelona left-back.

Alba’s been in good form this season for his club side which has seen him handed a recall to the national team by Lucho.

The Barcelona defender has continued in the same vein and picked up two assists in Spain’s 2-1 win over Georgia at the weekend.

Luis Enrique spoke about Alba ahead of La Roja’s World Cup qualifying clash against Kosovo on Wednesday in Seville.

“Against Georgia, Jordi Alba was decisive in the offensive phase, as almost always, and attentive in defense, especially in transitions thanks to his speed. I’ve seen one of his best versions. I am happy and satisfied and I hope he continues like this.”

The Spain boss also offered an update on Pedri and said he had trained well and with no problems after being on the end of an awful challenge late on in the win over Georgia

Barcelona to reignite interest in Lautaro - report

Torino FC v FC Internazionale - Serie A

Here we go again....

Barcelona could be about to resurrect their interest in Inter striker Lautaro Martinez ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Argentine, who was heavily linked with a move to the Camp Nou last year, is back on the agenda, according to RAC1.

New president Joan Laporta and his board are said to be “seriously considering” going back for Lautaro even though Dortmund’s Erling Haaland remains the dream.

We all know that landing Haaland will be tough, because of his price, Barca’s debts and the fierce competition for his signature, and so it seems alternative targets are being sought.

Free agents Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay have already been mentioned, but it seems that Martinez could also be a possibility.

The thinking seems to be that Barca may be able to afford Martinez this time around because Inter are also in a bit of financial trouble and may need to sell a key player to balance the books.

Dembélé’s fitness team is helping him achieve his potential

Real Sociedad v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander
Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

The forward’s purple patch is in part thanks to better physical conditioning

Ousmane Dembélé is enjoying a moment of good form. He’s playing more regularly and was recently recalled to the French national team by Didier Deschamps. He scored a goal for les bleus, and received plaudits from coaches and media alike. Now, he’s on the front page of L’Equipe, one of the most important sports outlets in France.

One of the reasons for his resurgence in form has been his physical fitness. The winger has struggled with injuries since making the move from Borussia Dortmund to FC Barcelona. But he has since finally added more stamina and power to his body, helping him steer clear of big injuries and continue to grow in confidence.

One of his secrets has been a trio of French professionals who work for him both at the club and for France: physical trainer Salah Ghaidi, physiotherapist Jean-Baptiste Duault, and cook Antonhy Audebaud.

Dembélé turned to them after becoming fed up with injury plagued seasons which stymied his progress.

“I did not know the world of football very well until I was called in to supervise Ousmane.” Ghaidi told L’Equipe.

He was a former sprinter who was a national champion in France. Ghaidi has been working with Dembélé since last august.

“My specialty is physical preparation and Ousmane has an explosive game, he is very fast, like a sprinter, the type of profile that I know best. [Training Dembélé] is as if we had a Formula 1 car in our hands. We are here to take care of him and help him optimize his performance. Physically, he has not reached one hundred percent yet. I’m not sure how far he can go. He is a war machine,” Ghaidi said.

Duault also comes form a non-football background. He was a physiotherapist for the French athletics team for eight years. Dembélé’s entourage reached out to him after he gave an expert opinion to the media about how the player could avoid injuries.

My goal is not to make Ousmane Dembélé run faster, but to make his body withstand the workload to which he is subjected to, and to prevent the risk of injury as much as possible, knowing that zero risk does not exist.”

Audebaud worked as a chef for some world renowned restaurants before settling in Barcelona, where he worked with the most famous local chefs and gave private lessons. Dembélé’s entourage reached out to him in 2018, but he became responsible for the player’s menus starting in 2019.

“I only cook using local, fresh and natural ingredients, without additives or preservatives. It is important that he enjoys eating and that he understands what I put in the dishes. I choose ingredients based on biological analysis, the frequency and the intensity of training and competition. I can’t prepare the same menu ten days after a match as the day before.”

The trio’s work, along with the commitment and will of the player, have produced results so far.

Lyon president speaks publicly on potential Memphis Depay transfer

Netherlands v Latvia - FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar Qualifier

“If he goes to a bigger team, he’ll have made the right choice.”

Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has spoken about Memphis Depay, the captain of his club, who is out of contract in the summer and heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona.

“I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. I will respect his decision. If he goes to a bigger club than Lyon, he’ll have made the right choice,” said Aulas.

“If he stays, it will mean we’ve been a great adventure for him and we have won something.”

Lyon are currently third in Ligue 1, three points behind Lille and Paris Saint-Germain.

“He’s been doing a good job as captain,” said Aulas.

“He talks a lot with other players in the squad.

“In recent years we have helped Memphis to reach and improve on the level he was at in the 2014 World Cup, where he announced himself.”

That was when Depay showed his potential as a 20 year old for the Netherlands under Louis van Gaal, which earned him a move to Manchester United. But he was unable to establish himself in the Premier League and instead moved to Lyon in 2017.

He has been a success for the French club, who last year shocked the world be eliminating Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

He continued making appearances for the Dutch national team, which was managed by Ronald Koeman from 2018 until last year.

Due to Koeman’s working relationship with Depay, it has long been rumored that the forward would move to Barcelona to reunite with his former boss.

Ronald Koeman rejects Sergio Agüero option - report

Real Sociedad v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander
Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

The Dutchman prefers his former pupil, Memphis Depay

Manchester City FC’s announcement that Sergio Agüero would not continue with them next season sparked another wave of rumors that the Argentine would be signing with FC Barcelona.

But perhaps that will not come to pass, if the wishes of manager Ronald Koeman prevail.

That’s according to a new report, which says the Dutch manager prefers signing one of his former players in the national team - Memphis Depay - to bolster the attack.

Both players are out of contract in the summer, but Koeman prefers the Lyon forward because he is said to think Depay could adapt better to his system. Depay could conceivably fill a few different roles along the forward line, while Agüero would really only play as a striker.

In addition, Depay could be a better fit in the locker room if he were more likely to accept being benched more often. Apparently, Koeman fears Agüero would be unsettled if he were forced to take a less prominent role in the squad.

In any case, Barcelona the report says that Barcelona are looking to add Depay or Agüero as a backup to their true dream signing, Erling Haaland.

Haaland’s agent sets expectations for his future

The Borussia Dortmund striker is in demand this summer

One of the hottest stories heading into this summer is the future of Borrusia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland. The striker is a goal-scoring machine who has a natural predator-like talent in front of goal.

His agent, the famous Mino Raiola, makes sure to get his voice out there as much as possible when it comes to his clients. He made it well known that Haaland can really go anywhere he wants and that he’s the talk of the football town.

“With Haaland, everybody was wrong and he did things much quicker than everybody imagined,” he said.

“Haaland is in front of his own development. He is ahead of his own schedule. Maybe I was too careful when I said ‘let’s move to Dortmund instead of I-don’t-know-where’.

“I’m 100 percent convinced and everybody’s convinced that this boy can move to any club. Wherever he wants, already on this level.

“He could have done that last year, but maybe last year there were still teams saying ‘oh, he was in Red Bull, can he do it in another club?’

“He is quicker than his own prediction. So yeah, Haaland is the talk of the town.”

Seeing Haaland in Barcelona colors next year is a dream. So let’s hope they can tame the beast that is Raiola.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen to get rare Germany start

The goalkeeper will play tomorrow

Germany coach Joachim Low confirmed on Tuesday that Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start the team’s World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia tomorrow.

Ter Stegen has been on the bench for the wins over Iceland and Romania during the current international break but will get a rare start for the national team on Wednesday.

Here’s what Low’s had to say about his team selection:

“I will wait until after the final training session to decide [the team], however Marc-André ter Stegen will play in goal – I’ve already told the goalkeepers that.

“I will speak to a few players after training tonight. The final decision on who will play will be made either tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest.

“Ilkay Gündogan will captain the side if he starts.”

Germany will be expected to see off a North Macedonia side who opened up with a 3-2 defeat to Romania but thrashed Liechtenstein 5-0 last time out.

The game will see Ter Stegen take over from Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and make his first appearance for the national side since featuring against Northern Ireland in 2019.

Should Barcelona go for Sergio Aguero?

Manchester City v Borussia Moenchengladbach - UEFA Champions League Round Of 16 Leg Two

The striker is leaving Manchester City this summer

Manchester City confirmed on Monday that Sergio Aguero is leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires after 10 trophy-packed years with the Premier League side.

The announcement is likely to bring a fresh raft of rumors about Aguero’s future with Barcelona one of several clubs regularly linked. Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain also seem to be have been added to the list in recent weeks.

Aguero will certainly be an attractive target as a free agent. He virtually guarantees goals, is an experienced international and knows La Liga well from his time with Atletico Madrid.

Sergio Kun Aguero Photo : Xavier Grimaldi / Icon Sport via Getty Images

Barcelona are in need of new No. 9 this summer but funds are a problem. Erling Haaland remains the dream but it’s a very difficult deal to pull off, not least because Barca must sell some big names first to finance the deal.

A host of other top clubs are also after Haaland which means Barca may be forced to look elsewhere. Aguero is one possibility and is reportedly “crazy” to join Barcelona and link up with his good friend Messi.

FBL-ARG-TRAINING Photo by JAIME REINA/AFP via Getty Images

His availability on a free may tempt the Catalans but his injury record, particularly this season, will be a concern. Aguero also turns 33 in June and let’s not forget Barca also has Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati, and Martin Braithwaite on the books although some of those may leave this summer.

There’s also the small matter of Memphis Depay. Coach Ronald Koeman has made no secret of the fact that he wants the Dutchman and came close to a move last summer. Depay is also available on a free transfer but is a younger and more versatile option than Aguero.

Reports suggest that Koeman would prefer Depay over Aguero but there are other clubs keen on the Dutchman too. Therefore it could come down to a straight choice between the two free agents if Barca are not able to land Haaland. If that’s the case then who would you choose? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Coutinho heading to Brazil for treatment on knee injury

An injury update on the 28-year-old

Barcelona announced on Monday that Philippe Coutinho will head out to Brazil for further treatment on his knee injury.

The 28-year-old has been out of action since undergoing a knee operation in January, and reports have claimed he’s suffered a setback in his recovery.

Barca say Coutinho is heading back to his homeland for “medical treatment” on his injury but do not offer any more details.

Coutinho was originally ruled out for four months, but there have been suggestions he may now not play again this season. Barca have 10 games left in La Liga as well as the Copa del Rey final next month.

If that’s the case then it’s possible Coutinho may have already played his last game for the club. The Brazil international has been regularly linked with a move away this summer and seems surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.

Manchester City officially announce Sergio Agüero departure

The Argentine has been linked with a move to Barcelona

Manchester City FC have announced the departure of one of their most influential players ever, Sergio Agüero. The Argentine forward has played for the Citizens since 2011,

Agüero became the club’s record goalscorer in 2017 and won the Premier League four times, the League Cup five times, and the FA Cup once with City. All in all, he has scored 257 goals in 384 appearances for them.

He scored a memorable dramatic late goal in 2012, in added time on the last matchday, to secure the first Premier League title for City. That moment is one that many commentators have called the most dramatic Premier League title win ever.

Agüero’s contract is up in the summer, and City has committed to both a grand send-off and a statue commissioned alongside those of David Silva and Vincent Kompany already under construction at the Etihad Stadium.

Agüero has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona, who are still looking to replace the departed Luis Suárez. In fact, Agüero was strongly linked with a move to the Camp Nou prior to Suárez’s transfer from Liverpool FC.

Though the transfer is still a rumor to this point, a free transfer could be an attractive option for the cash-strapped Catalan giants, who would also benefit from Agüero’s familiarly with La Liga and friendship with compatriot Lionel Messi.

In fact, rumors have said that Agüero’s arrival at the club could be part of a push to convince Messi to not leave. Barcelona’s star man wanted to move to Manchester last summer, and has been linked with a switch to Paris Saint-Germain this year. It remains to be seen whether Agüero or Messi or perhaps both will play in Catalonia next season.

Inter Milan joins Barcelona in the race for Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum

FIFA World Cup Qualifier”The Netherlands v Latvia”

The midfielder’s contract is expiring in three months

Inter Milan is interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who is out of contract in three months. The player has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona, to reunite with his former national team coach. Ronald Koeman.

With Barcelona looking for cheap solutions in the market, the fact that Wijnaldum could be signed for free could prove attractive for the Catalans.

Koeman is strongly rumored to want the midfielder in his squad, with Wijnaldum being linked to a move to the Camp Nou ever since the Dutch manager was appointed as coach.

Rumors say that Wijnaldum would sign a 3 year contract with a net salary of 8 million euro.

Inter are looking to bolster their squad for an attempt at an UEFA Champions League run next season, and perhaps a title defense of Serie A, should they win the scudetto this year.

At the moment, it seems Inter have only started to sound out Wijnaldum and are aware that his connection to Koeman could mean the player would prefer joining Barcelona.

José Ramón Alexanko is strongly rumored to be taking over

Patrick Kluivert is out as head of La Masia.

Starting next month, the former striker will leave his post as FC Barcelona academy director, as decided by newly elected president Joan Laporta.

José Ramón Alexanko is said to be his replacement. The former Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona defender was also an assistant coach at Barça under Carles Rexach. He was recently the academy and scouting director of South African club Mamelodi Sundowns, from 2019 until last November.

Kluivert was appointed after his stint as director of football at Paris Saint-Germain and assistant manager of Cameroon. He was said to have been hired at the insistence of Barcelona executive Xavi Vilajoana.

The former Dutch international was tasked with working on some important contract renewals of youth players such as Pablo Páez ‘Gavi’, Ilias Akhomach, and Ángel Alarcón.

He has not been fired effective immediately like some other holdovers of the Josep Maria Bartomeu era. Laporta will reportedly allow Kluivert to finish up the season before leaving.

Barcelona still in the race for David Alaba?

Austria v Faroe Islands - FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar Qualifier
Photo by Guenther Iby/SEPA.Media /Getty Images

The Bayern Munich star’s agent has been talking

David Alaba’s agent, Pini Zahavi, has claimed that the Bayern Munich man has yet to make a decision on his future and where he will play his football next season.

The Austria international has already confirmed he’ll be leaving Bayern when his contract expires and has been linked with a host of top clubs including Barcelona.

La Liga appears to be Alaba’s preferred choice, with reports claiming a deal with Real Madrid has already been agreed, but it seems Barca may also still be in the race.

“David has to choose who wins the race,” Zahavi, told Kicker. The agent reportedly added that Real and Barca are in pole position before adding, “we are still talking to other clubs.”

Kicker seem to think that Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also in the running, while Zahavi also said there’s “no deadline” for any decisions on Alaba’s future.

Real Madrid still seems to be Alaba’s most likely destination as previous reports have suggested Barca have been put off by the 28-year-old’s wage demands.

Emerson says his focus is on Real Betis not Barcelona

The defender’s future remains uncertain

One of the more underrated subplots heading into the summer is how Emerson Royal’s contractual situation will go. The full-back is co-owned by Real Betis and Barcelona. The two clubs will need to come to some sort of agreement this summer, and the decision could have a profound impact on the clubs.

Emerson made sure to let us know he was purely focused on Betis as of now. We’ll just have to wait and see if that focus holds out if Betis try and keep him this summer.

“I don’t think about Barcelona or anyone else, only Betis,” he said.

“We have ten important games and we want to get the maximum of them out if possible. When the season is over, then I will start to think about my future.

“Europe will be a huge boost of course. For me and for all the players that are here. We deserve to put Betis where it needs to be because it is a spectacular club and it has to always be fighting for important things.”

Emerson | Source

The latest rumors have suggested Emerson will move to Barca in the summer and the club will then decide whether to keep him or sell to the highest bidder. Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keen on the 22-year-old.

Dembele seems ‘back to his best,’ says Lizarazu

Kazakhstan v France - Qualifying World Cup 2022

The Barcelona star scored for France against Kazazkhstan

Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele “seems to be back to his best” after managing to put his injury problems behind him this season, according to French World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu.

Dembele’s form at the Camp Nou has seen him recalled to the French squad after an absence of two years, and he scored in Sunday’s World Cup qualifying win over Kazakhstan.

Lizarazu admits there were doubts about Dembele, because of his injuries, but has praised the forward for getting his career back on track.

“He seems to be back to his best,” he said.

“This was not a guarantee after his serious injury last year. You even wondered if he was going to regain all of his athleticism. The answer is: yes he has.

“He now seems to have understood what the life of a high-level footballer should be.

“He, above all, hired a personal physical trainer to work specifically on his weaknesses, and this seems to have born fruit.”

Coach Didier Deschamps also complimented Dembele after the match, while the French newspapers were full of praise for the Barcelona forward on Monday, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona feeling optimistic about landing Haaland - report

1. FC Koeln v Borussia Dortmund - Bundesliga

The Borussia Dortmund star is in demand this summer

The Erling Haaland rumors continue to fly about with the latest update coming from Diario Sport who reckon there is “optimism” at Barcelona that they can land the Borussia Dortmund striker.

The obvious problem for Barcelona is the price, and the club’s enormous debts, but the report reckons the Catalans have decided Haaland is an “absolutely strategic” and “vital” signing.

Barcelona believe it is “very, very likely” that Haaland will leave this summer because he has a buyout clause of just €75 million that comes into effect next year. Dortmund must therefore renew or sell to the highest bidder.

Despite rumors that Dortmund want €200m or, more recently, €180m for Haaland, Diario Sport claim that actually Barcelona could land him for €150m.

Manchester City and Real Madrid are both mentioned as possible destinations, although Los Blancos are believed to have made Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe their priority.

The report adds that Barca have already told Haaland that he’s their top choice to strengthen the attack and will sell “one or two starters” and offload some high earners to finance the deal.

Deschamps praises Dembele after France strike

Kazakhstan v France - Qualifying World Cup 2022
Photo by Anthony Dibon/Icon Sport via Getty Images

The Barcelona star struck in World Cup qualifying

France boss Didier Deschamps praised Barcelona attacker Ousmane Dembele after he scored in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Kazakhstan in World Cup qualifying.

It’s Dembele’s first competitive international goal and also the first time he’s found the back of the net for Les Bleus since 2018.

Deschamps thought the 23-year-old worked well in attack alongside Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.

“They did some interesting things,” he said.

“Ousmane has confirmed that he’s getting back on the right track. He’s capable of repeated sprints and making the difference. He was rewarded with his goal.

“Anthony was behind the opening goal. It’s good for them both.

“From the moment I selected them, they are in the squad to be used. I have other attackers in this squad. But for the profile of the opponent, it was important to commit opponents and to dribble.

“They both did it pretty well.”

Deschamps made a host of changes to his side for the game and it will be interesting to see if Dembele keeps his place for Wednesday’s game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Martial may miss out after limping out of Sunday’s win.

Eric Garcia on future: I don’t know if it will be Barça

Spain v Greece - FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar Qualifier
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The defender has been heavily linked with a Camp Nou return

Eric Garcia was giving little away about his future after playing in Spain’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Georgia on Sunday.

Luis Enrique’s side had to come from behind to take the victory and had looked set to drop points until Dani Olmo’s 92nd-minute winner.

Garcia spoke to reporters about his future and the match after the full-time whistle.

“I‘m focused on what concerns me, now with the national team there is a very important match against Kosovo coming up, and then what comes will come. I don’t know if it will be Barça.

“The team deserved it, against Greece we found a penalty that leveled the game for us and today we competed to the fullest. We deserve it for a spectacular attitude.

Source | Mundo Deportivo

Barcelona trio Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Pedri all featured in the match. Alba picked up assists for both goals, while Pedri was lucky to escape injury after this shocker of a challenge.

Luis Enrique went on to speak about Pedri after the match and was pretty pleased with his display, particularly in the second half of the match.

“Pedri, in the first half, was pretty much like the whole team and, in the second, he showed the kind of player that he is and the qualities that he has,” he said.

“He was very good with Jordi Alba, with whom he has a good understanding.”

Source | Marca

Yet the coach wasn’t too happy with his team’s overall performance and said he’s “pretty worried” ahead of Wednesday’s match against Kosovo after seeing his team forced to come from behind and needing a late goal to seal the win.

The forward netted his first international goal since 2018

Ousmane Dembele celebrated his return to the international fold with his first competitive goal for France in World Cup qualifying on Sunday.

The Barcelona forward struck the opener after 19 minutes against Kazakhstan with a powerful low shot across goal from just inside the penalty area.

Dembele was one of three Barcelona players in a France team showing plenty of changes from Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Ukraine. Clement Lenglet was back in defense, while Antoine Griezmann featured in attack along with Dembele.

France doubled their lead just before half-time when Sergey Malyy headed a Griezmann corner past his own goalkeeper and into the net.

More chances came France’s way after the break with Dembele and substitute Kylian Mbappe both seeing efforts saved by the goalkeeper.

Mbappe also missed a penalty after being fouled by Nuraly Alip.

France play again on Wednesday against Bosnia and Herzegovina which will see the Barca contingent come up against Miralem Pjanic.

Barca ready to renew Dembele, Ilaix & Mingueza - report

Osasuna v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander
Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

New contracts will be offered in April

Barcelona are reportedly ready to offer contract extensions to Ousmane Dembele, Ilaix Moriba, and Oscar Mingueza as the club looks to the future.

The club has decided that renewing all three players is now a priority and is hoping to have everything signed, sealed and delivered in the next few weeks, according to Sport.

Dembele’s contract expires in 2022 and Barca know they must extend or sell this year.

The club still expect negotiations to be “complicated” but the Frenchman is said to be much more receptive to offers after becoming an important player under Ronald Koeman.

The other two deals may be more straightforward. Ilaix is said to have received offers from elsewhere but looks keen to continue after playing for the first team this season.

Barca want to extend his contract for at least four more seasons, hand him a first-team number and increase his buyout clause.

Mingueza is the third name on the list and is also said to have other offers. Yet Barca already have an option to extend his deal until 2023 but may add on a few more seasons too.

Mingueza sees red on Spain Under-21 debut

Spain v Italy - 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship

The defender was sent off against Italy

Spain Under-21s were left fuming after a 0-0 draw with Italy on Saturday that saw three players sent off, including Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza.

The 21-year-old was dismissed on his international debut in a controversial incident in the 86th minute, although it looks a poor call from the referee who was just a meter away.

Italy duo Gianluca Scamacca and Nicolo Rovella also saw red late on as the game ended all square in Slovenia.

Spain Under-21 boss Luis de la Fuente made it pretty clear how unhappy he was after the final whistle.

“The replays show that Óscar Mingueza does not touch the Italian player. We are going to appeal the red and see how far it ends up going. Hopefully justice will be done,” he said.

“The players were unhappy. When you try to play a certain style of football and the opponent does things that aren’t exactly sportsmanlike... I was angry, and so were they.”

The draw leaves Spain top of Group B on four points after two games played. The team is due to play again on Tuesday against the Czech Republic.

Todibo: It sucks to go to Barca and not play

OGC Nice v Olympique de Marseille - Ligue 1

The defender has been talking about the Catalan giants

Jean-Clair Todibo has been talking about his time at Barcelona and has once again lamented the lack of opportunities he was given at the Camp Nou.

The French defender is currently on loan at Nice. He moved back back to the Ligue 1 sdde in January after making no impression at Benfica in the first half of the season.

Todibo’s already made seven appearances in the French top flight and made it clear how much he enjoys playing.

“It sucks to go to Barcelona and not play. I would rather wear the CS Sedan Ardennes shirt and play than go to Barcelona and not play. Already you suffer less criticism at Sedan.

“The presentation at Barcelona, it’s madness, but I only played five games, it’s bogus in real life. I won a La Liga (in 2019), but I didn’t help the team, I played when we had won the title!

“Abidal saw me as Piqué’s replacement. I played two games, then Valverde told me that I was the fourth defender but that I was going to have to prove in the preseason. Umtiti got hurt. I did the right thing, but I am not given my chance.

“I’m not asking to play the Clásico, but make me play matches, I think I have the level to play against Leganés, with all the respect I have for them. I waited 2 months to play against Inter Milan and I understood that I had to leave.”

Source | L’Equipe

Todibo’s comments suggest he’s not particularly interested in coming back to Barcelona unless he’s going to play regularly. He could end up staying at Nice if he impresses during his loan spell. The transfer included a purchase option set at €8.5 million, plus €7 million in variables.

Xavi says Joachim Low would be a good fit for Barcelona

Photo by Matthias Hangst - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images

The coach will leave his post with Germany in the summer

Barcelona legend Xavi has been talking about his former club and how he thinks Germany boss Joachim Low would be a good fit for the Catalan giants.

Low confirmed at the start of the month that he would be stepping down from his post with Die Mannschaft after this summer’s European Championship.

The 61-year-old has been in his job for 15 years, winning the World Cup in 2014, and Xavi feels his Germany side is similar in style to Barcelona.

“He was a luxury coach. He wants sparkle and attacking football, and he is a world champion. Low has helped Germany develop a different understanding of football that reminds me a lot of what I know from Spain and Barcelona.

“[He would be a good fit for Barcelona] because of his way of understanding the game and because of his personality.”

Goal | Suddeutsche Zeitung

There have been rumors recently that Low has been taking Spanish lessons and could end up in La Liga next, although Ronald Koeman is currently expected to continue at Barcelona for another season.

Barcelona to have two home shirts next season?

FC Barcelona v SD Huesca - La Liga Santander
Photo by Gerard Franco/DAX Images/NurPhoto via Getty Images

One for La Liga and one for the Champions League?

Barcelona may end up having two home shirts for next season and will wear one in La Liga and the Copa del Rey and the other in the Champions League, according to Mundo Deportivo.

We’ve already seen images of the first one which is, frankly, a bit of a shocker.

There are no images yet of what the second home shirt will look like but MD do bring a few details about the kit which will only be worn in European competition.

Apparently, it will feature the club’s famous stripes and the design will be “inspired by certain neighborhoods in Barcelona.”

The report seems to think there are a few reasons for introducing yet another kit and point out it has been done before when Kappa was the sponsor.

PSG are also cited as an example of a team who already do it, Nike apparently “want another shirt for the Champions League at a commercial level” and the club want to promote the city in 2022 as it’s the 30th anniversary of the Olympics being held in Barcelona.

5 players Barca need to sell to bring in Haaland

FC Barcelona v C.A. Osasuna - La Liga Santander

Clear out required at the Camp Nou

This summer’s transfer window, perhaps more than any other in Barcelona’s recent history, is likely to be one of their most important.

Even before it opens, Joan Laporta will have to demonstrate to Lionel Messi that he will have the means to back up his statements that the No.10 will be provided with a competitive team.

On this occasion, whoever is acquired has to be bang on the money from the get-go, whilst there needs to be a ruthless approach taken to those players who need to leave in order to make way for new signings.

It seems abundantly clear at this stage that Laporta wants to bring in Erling Haaland, and there won’t be too many that would argue with the choice, as long as, financially at least, it’s a deal that can be done without breaking the bank.

So which players should be making way?

Antoine Griezmann

Real Sociedad v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images

In many ways it’s a shame that the Frenchman finds himself on this list.

His work ethic is as good as anyone’s in the side, and his skill set isn’t in doubt. He was just never the right fit for the club.

He’s shown in flashes this season what he is capable of, but for a €100m+ player, brief glimpses of his talent just isn’t good enough.

Griezmann could still command a decent fee and Barca will save a bundle on wages.

Samuel Umtiti

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - La Liga Santander Photo by Alex Caparros/Getty Images

Whatever Big Sam had, he’s lost.

Though he was never the quickest, he could cover the ground reasonably speedily, but his lack of pace nowadays has been shown up each time Ronald Koeman has given him opportunities.

A colossus when signed, Umtiti has been bullied off of the ball, outmuscled...

The emergence of Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza to complement Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet means that there’s no place for Umtiti.

He’s refused to leave before now but Laporta can’t allow him that luxury this time. It needs to be made clear that he has no future at the club.

Philippe Coutinho

FC Barcelona v Valencia CF - La Liga Santander Photo by Eric Alonso/Getty Images

Just like Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho has been a square peg in a round hole at the Camp Nou.

An initial flurry aside, the Brazilian has failed to adapt to Barcelona’s style of play and, as their most expensive ever signing, his hire can only ever be seen as an absolute failure in every respect.

Even at his ‘best’ for the club, his play was far too predictable. Cutting inside and bending a shot into the far corner is a great weapon to have, but it can’t be the only weapon.

Barcelona will be lucky if they get a quarter of what they paid for Coutinho, but the saving of wages will be significant.

Martin Braithwaite

FC Barcelona v Sevilla - Spanish Copa del Rey Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

Of all on this list, the Dane should be sent on his way with everyone’s best wishes.

He’s never let anyone down in his time at the club, has always given his best and worked his hardest to improve.

Frankly, he’s done everything asked of him and more, but if Haaland is to arrive, there simply won’t be a place in the squad for Braithwaite.

Miralem Pjanic

FC Barcelona v Elche CF - La Liga Santander Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

One of the worst signings in recent Barcelona history.

It’s clear to everyone now that the only reason he was signed in the swap deal with Arthur Melo was to help cover Bartomeu’s ass.

Has contributed nothing. Zilch. Nada.

Sergio Busquets hasn’t has his best season either, but a poor Busi is still a cut above Pjanic.
