Barcelona vs. Sporting Gijón, 2017 La Liga: Team News, Preview, Predictions

Can Barça maintain an impressive league streak?

Let's get this straight right off the bat: this has been a bad Barcelona season. The performances get worse and worse, the Champions League is basically over, and there have been almost zero games that got us excited about a team that signed great young players to strengthen the bench in the summer and still maintained a world-class starting unit.

During this poor, inconsistent season, we need to try and look at a few positives: Samuel Umtiti looks like the real deal and capable of leading the Blaugrana defense for the next decade; Marc-André ter Stegen has established himself as the undisputed goalkeeper and a very talented one; Lionel Messi is Lionel Messi, and the 'MSN' trio is still capable of producing even though the collective quality has completely gone south.

The most impressive thing about this season, however, is the one we're not talking about: a 17-match unbeaten streak in La Liga. This may seem like not a big deal because Barça don't lead La Liga and will probably need a victory at Santiago Bernabéu to have a shot at beating Real Madrid and winning a third straight league title. But going 17 matches without a loss even though the team hasn't played well in at least a dozen of those games is a testament to how good this team is.

Imagine if this team was well coached? We'll probably have to wait for Jorge Sampaoli to see this team being well coached again, but until the summer Luis Enrique is the man and he'll try to lead his mediocre team into an improbable La Liga trophy. The next challenge is Sporting Gijón at Camp Nou, and if Barça can reach 18 games without a loss, the streak will continue and league glory may still be a possibility.

Here's the problem, though: Barça's season has been so poor that we don't know if Barça can actually beat one of the worst teams in Spain. It's game by game, and the win won't come because of the coach.

Please sign that damn contract, Sampaoli.

TEAM NEWS

Jérémy Mathieu was wonderful against Atlético Madrid, but because this season sucks he'll be out for a few weeks thanks to an injured ankle. The good news is the other injured center-back on the team, Javier Mascherano, will probably be in the squad and may get at least 30 minutes of action in his comeback. Arda Turan is also coming back from a groin injury and may be in uniform on Wednesday.

As far as the starting lineup, we're not likely to see the 3-4-3 used against Atlético thanks to Mathieu's injury and the need for a more offensive setup to try and break a defensive Sporting side. Expect a small rotation of the team that won at the Calderón, with Andrés Iniesta and Rafinha Alcântara going to the bench and Denis Suarez playing with Sergio Busquets and André Gomes in midfield.

The 'MSN' will play up front, with Jordi Alba coming back to the left-back spot and Sergi Roberto, Gerard Piqué and the wonderful Umtiti completing the side. Barça need to control the match through good midfield play, and while that's a distant dream at the moment, we never know. Fingers crossed!

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona, 2017 La Liga: Final Score 1-2, Leo Messi wins fantastic match

WHAT A VICTORY!!!!

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid put together a fantastic football match that ended with a 2-1 victory for the Blaugrana in the last La Liga encounter between these two Spanish giants at the Vicente Calderón. Both teams attacked each other in a match filled with many exciting moments, and Lionel Messi scored a late winner to give the Catalans three gigantic points in the title race.

FIRST HALF

The first half hour of the initial period was fully controlled by the hosts, who pressured the ball high up the pitch, recovered it and forced Ter Stegen into a few big saves. The Blaugrana couldn't control possession in the midfield and were on the back foot for most of the half, creating some chances on the counter but not doing anything dangerous.

But as we approached the end of the half, the visitors took control of the ball, finally, and then began to scare the Colchoneros and Jan Oblak had to make two amazing stops to keep the score at zero.

At halftime, Atlético were the better side but couldn't score, and Barça showed good signs of what was to come in the final period.

SECOND HALF

Luis Suárez and Antoine Griezmann wasted chances they normally wouldn't in the first five minutes of the second half, and it was clear we'd have an action-packed period. The two teams continued to trade shots and fouls, and then the goals came.

First, a total mess in the box with players from both teams scrapping to find the ball eventually ended with Rafinha Alcântara scoring a really nice goal with his right foot. Atlético answered quickly when Diego Godín headed the ball in and tied the game with 20 minutes to go.

Both teams tried to go forward in search of the game-winner, and it was Barça that got it thanks to the world's greatest player: Lionel Messi was at the right place at the right time, and scored a clutch goal in the 86th minute. Three massive points for Barça, and Messi is Messi.

Atlético: Oblak; Vrasljko, Savic, Godín, Luis; Koke, Gabi, Saúl, Carrasco (Torres); Griezmann, Gameiro (Correa)

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Piqué, Umtiti, Mathieu (Digne); Roberto (Gomes), Busquets, Iniesta (Rakitic); Messi; Rafinha, Suárez, Neymar

La Liga: Atletico Madrid vs FC Barcelona: Team News, Match Preview

Biggest game of the season? You betcha!

FC Barcelona will be looking to pile the pressure on league leaders, Real Madrid tomorrow afternoon, and ease the anxiety amongst Culés as they travel to the Spanish capital to take on Atletico Madrid for the final time at the Vicente Calderon. With the Blaugrana set to contest the 2017 Copa del Rey final at the Calderon in May, this will not be the final time that Luis Enrique’s side step out onto the hallowed turf, but it will represent the final showdown in these surroundings for such familiar rivals.

The Blaugrana and Atleti have squared off a lot over the years, and no more frequently than they have in the past few seasons. Tomorrow’s match will be the sixth time this campaign that Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone have done battle, and arguably as a 90 minute match, it will be the most important of the bunch.

After all, the Copa del Rey semi-final was contested over two legs, meaning that the importance of each 90 minutes was perhaps lessened by the fact it was followed or proceeded by another match – but this time there’s no chance to make amends, it’s do or die for each side and the stakes are tremendously high.

For the hosts, they will want to send off the Calderon with a win; this has been a historic fixture for years and the thought of closing the Calderon after losses at home to both Real Madrid and FC Barcelona must be a horrifying prospect for Atleti fans across the world. The for the visitors, the pressure is well and truly on Luis Enrique and the squad as a whole after they were embarrassed by Paris Saint-Germain, and last weekend’s narrow victory over Leganes did nothing to allay concerns that Barcelona are in something of a spiral.

Oh yeah, and after Real Madrid lost in midweek to Valencia, the title race is closer than it has been in at least a couple of months.

Less than a month ago, FC Barcelona travelled to Madrid and put on a show in the first-half at the Vicente Calderon, storming ahead into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi Despite a spirited fightback, Barcelona held on for the win and all but secured their place in the Copa del Rey final in the process. Is it so hard to believe that the same team cannot secure a similar result tomorrow afternoon?

Confidence may be low, and the system may not be firing on all cylinders, but that’s no reason to abandon all hope. All it takes is one goal, one good performance and the machine could be working smoothly again. Sure, it might look tough – but typically, that has been when this team and this collective group has thrived. With their backs against the wall, FC Barcelona typically respond.

Will they be able to respond one more time tomorrow, or will Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone crush the visitor’s hopes and send Luis Enrique home empty-handed?

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

For Luis Enrique, the midweek break will have come at just the right time; his squad were short on confidence and clearly physically and mentally fatigued by their exhausting stretch of games from January to the middle of this month. Key players were unfit, or at least fighting off niggling injuries and the week off should have helped ease all those problems.

Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Sergio Busquets, Arda Turan; the list goes on and on, and Luis Enrique should be able to not only count on them all to make the squad, but also deliver a performance.

Overall, there are only a few selection dilemmas for Luis Enrique to address. The first concerns the centre of defense, as Samuel Umtiti has performed admirably but does not offer the leadership that Javier Mascherano brings to the team. In tough situations, the squad needs a player of Mascherano’s mindset to give them strength for the fight ahead and this could be one of those situations.

Similarly, he could deploy Mascherano in a more advanced position as pivote, perhaps then shifting altogether to a 4-2-3-1 system. Personally, I don’t feel as though this offers the solution that some think it may provide; while Mascherano could assist defensively and partner up with Sergi Roberto, it only places more pressure on Neymar and Lionel Messi, drawing them further away from goal were they of course tend to be most effective.

Provided Enrique sticks with the 4-3-3, the choice is then between Ivan Rakitic, Rafinha, Denis Suarez and Andre Gomes for the spot on the right – and simply put, the Croatian midfielder is perhaps our only real option for a match like this. Rafinha offers more going forward, but defensively he does not provide the same stability that Rakitic offers – provided he is fully fit and on form.

ATLETICO MADRID

The headline news for the hosts is that Diego Godin is back and set to return to the starting line-up. The Uruguayan has been absent through injury, and while Atletico have recovered form without him, they are undoubtedly a better side with him leading the defense. However, while Godin returns, Tiago, Juanfran and Augusto Fernandez all remain absent through injury which in turns leaves the Atleti backline looking a little more vulnerable than they might normally be.

On the other hand, with Kevin Gameiro showing signs that he may finally be finding form after his big money move from Sevilla in the summer, Simeone may even back his side to outscore the Blaugrana, particularly given Barcelona’s struggle to create chances in recent matches.

Report: Barcelona to face Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus in 2017 preseason

El Clásico in the States!

If you live in the United States, you'll probably be watching a lot of amazing Barcelona matches.

According to a report from Catalan radio RAC1, a very reliable news source, the Blaugrana will travel to America for their International Champions Cup campaign in preseason this year. They'll play between July 22-29, with the venues yet to be decided, but the opponents are already set.

Always according to the report, Barça will face Juventus, Manchester United and their arch-rivals Real Madrid, which promises to be a very interesting match. El Clásico in preseason is not a regular thing, and it'll be interesting to see how the coaches will approach that.

We still have five months until July, though, and we don't even know if Luis Enrique will continue as Barça manager once preseason comes. One thing's for sure: the 2017 Barcelona preseason will be super fun. Juve, United and El Clásico? In the United States? Maybe at the Rose Bowl? Now that's interesting.

FC Barcelona News: 22 February 2017; Second Day Off for Players, Barcelona Extend Yerry Mina Option

Barcelona unrecognisable in terms of results and style of play | ESPN
That was the headline chosen by Catalan newspaper Diario Sport after Barcelona were humiliated by Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 in the first leg of their round-of-16 Champions League tie last week. And despite Sunday's win against Leganes -- which was only sealed via a Lionel Messi penalty in the 90th minute -- it's a front cover which would have served on Monday morning, too.

Barcelona extend option on Palmeiras defender Yerry Mina until 2018 | ESPN

Rumor Rater: Isco to Leave Real Madrid and Join FC Barcelona?

We take a look at how credible the suggestion is.

On the front cover of Mundo Deportivo: Isco Alarcón could follow in the steps of Luis Enrique and Samuel Eto’o and leave Real Madrid for FC Barcelona in the summer.

Manolo Lama, from the radio station COPE, has also hinted at a possible move to the Camp Nou for Isco.

It’s true that Isco hasn’t gotten a regular spot in the starting XI under Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benítez, or Zinedine Zidance since making his way from Málaga to the capital club.

There have been longstanding rumors that Isco was an FC Barcelona fan prior to signing for Madrid, in addition to the fact he named his dog Messi.

So the pieces are there for Isco to make a summer switch? Maybe.

Barcelona are currently stocked in the midfield, in quantity if not quality. A player would definitely have to be sold to fund such a move. And Barcelona would have to prefer Isco to other options, which is not a guarantee.

What it comes down to is this: it’s logical that Isco could leave. But Barcelona would be one of many suitors, and there’s little-to-no-evidence they’d be first in line. Manchester City seems particularly poised, given Isco almost signed with them before choosing Madrid. Juventus is another option.

And we don’t know who will be in charge of FC Barcelona come this summer. It could be Luis Enrique, but it seems likelier and likelier he will not be.

So it becomes highly unpredictable what the new coach would want, if indeed there is a new coach. Who he would sell and who he would buy... who knows?

For all we know, Isco could be using a potential move to Barcelona as the ultimate threat to make Madrid value him more.

While this rumor is plausible, it’s likely that there is no information beyond the basic facts that Isco could very well leave, and Barcelona is one of many teams that could potentially buy him.

Report: Barcelona Negotiating with Two La Liga Teams for Aleix Vidal Replacement

But we are getting conflicting information.

Barcelona have identified two targets as possible replacements for the injured Aleix Vidal: Juanfran Moreno (Deportivo La Coruña) and Roberto Rosales (Málaga), according to Catalan daily Sport.

Some background information: Aleix Vidal is out for the season due to an ankle injury and Barcelona only count with Sergi Roberto at right-back. La Liga has a rule that allows Barcelona to sign an emergency replacement, but it can only be a Liga player or a free agent, and he can only play domestic competitions.

Barcelona did not plan on spending any money on this, and don’t seem to want to. However, the report says that the team considers both Juanfran and Rosales good options because they could be bought relatively cheaply, then sold if necessary for good value.

Sport also tells us that Luis Enrique wants a signing but the club is more hesitant, and that contact has begun with the two players. Juanfran’s cost would be 8 million euro, while Rosales would cost 6 million. Both are ready to take on the challenge, and both could either become a full-time part of the team going forward, or they could be sold in the summer to recoup most of the money.

However, the tune is different over at Mundo Deportivo. That paper tells us Barcelona making a signing is unlikely, and considering this player would only play maybe 7 games, it isn’t worth the trouble. This would be especially the case if Barcelona fall further adrift of Real Madrid, so perhaps the coming games could play a pivotal role. In any case, Barcelona only have until the beginning of the next month to decide.

FC Barcelona Tactics: Time for Three At the Back?

Snooze-fest 2017!

I browsed reddit for the majority of this game.

If you were me, how would you write this segment? I am supposed to watch every game and write about the positive things Barcelona did; and more specifically choose three players who performed well above the other eight players on the field. But this…this thing only the hardiest of us can call a football game. It is almost impossible to see this thing and dissect it for anything positive. Haven’t we all suffered enough!? And the answer to that is no, no we have not, because I have no other choice but to root through the muck to try and find a decent performance. What would be the opposite of a screamer? A snoozer? That doesn’t seem quite right. A whisperer! Yeah, that’s the one. This game was a whisperer. That just sounds right.

In this whisperer of a game, about the only entertaining thing you could enjoy during the entirety of the slowest ninety minutes in existence was the Spanish commentators using Rico’s name. “La toca Rico, se la quito Rico, la mueve rico, etc., etc.”. Oh, aye, how very naïve of me, but at least I managed to scrounge some entertainment out of something that’s supposed to be entertaining. Especially when you are referring to Barcelona and what until recently was their beautiful way of playing football. When was it the last time you couldn’t sit through a whole Barça match?

Irish Goat’s Gamboling Goleadores!

1st Goleador: MAtS

Our young netminder has proven to be the last lifeline left to this team after the horrid past couple of meltdowns. Against PSG he had a terrific game, but unfortunately the rest of the team was so utterly awful that chances kept coming and coming for the Parisians, which led to more goals than even MAtS could keep out. He was, again, the best player on the field against Leganes and the only reason we did not concede more goals against one of the worst teams in La Liga.

2nd Goleador: Rafinha

Barcelona has basically lost the midfield this year. They struggle to create any movement or creativity from the middle of the field and always rely on playing to the sides. They are static and lack movement. Rafinha has really tried to buck that trend, and should be seriously considered for a spot in the gala XI. The kid has pace, knows how to keep possession, has a soft touch on the ball, and can actually produce a decent change of pace instead of getting pressed off the ball like most of our midfielders are doing nowadays. And on defense he can freaking tackle the ball away from a player. When did our players forget how to strip possession from the opposition? Honestly, half the time it feels like even the worse teams can get a shot off in almost every possession they have because our guys have no idea how to regain possession.

Y mas nada! Everybody else sucked. Enjoy your week and as always Visca Barça!

The last ever Atlético Madrid v FC Barcelona at the Vicente Calderón | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona will meet Atlético Madrid for the final time in the Vicente Calderón on Sunday at 4.15pm CET in Week 24 of La Liga. It is not, however, the final time that Barça will play at the stadium as the Calderón has been chosen as the venue for the Copa del Rey final against Alavés on 27 May. That will be the final official fixture at the famous ground before Atlético move to their new stadium, the Wanda Metropolitano, in the summer.

VIDEO: Ter Stegen saves the day against Leganés | FC Barcelona
Although Leo Messi's two goals may have keyed the Barça attack in Sunday night's 2-1 win over Leganés, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen’s contribution at the other end of the pitch was equally important. The German goalkeeper made five key saves at critical points in the match to keep Barça in the game and put them in a position to eventually win the game on Messi's 89th minute penalty kick.

[MATCH REPORT] FC Barcelona 2-1 Leganés: Late salvation | FC Barcelona
A 90th minute Leo Messi penalty handed FC Barcelona a narrow 2-1 win over Leganés on Sunday evening in what was a challenging encounter at the Camp Nou. Ahead of the game, Luis Enrique spoke about his keenness to see a reaction from his side after the midweek disappointment in Paris.

BY THE NUMBERS: Leo Messi goes top in chase for Golden Shoe | FC Barcelona
Those 19 goals also put Messi joint first in the Golden Shoe race. With the Liga coefficient, he has 38 points, the same as Gonzalo Higuaín of Juventus and Edin Dzeko of AS Roma. All three are ahead of Edinson Cavani, who might have scored more goals, 25, but the Ligue 1 coefficient of 1.5 means they only count for 37.5 points.

Andrés Iniesta reaches 400 league games for FC Barcelona | FC Barcelona
Andrés Iniesta has reached another historic landmark in an FC Barcelona shirt. The Barça captain made his 400th league appearance for the blaugranes in Sunday’s encounter against Leganés. The midfielder from Fuentealbilla made his debut in La Liga in 2002 against Mallorca with Louis Van Gaal as coach. He claimed his first league title in 2005, the first of two successive championships under another Dutch coach in Frank Rijkaard.

Barcelona putting plans in place for Luis Enrique's successor | Sky Sports
For a team that has based its success on its midfield, watching Barcelona use their 15th different midfield combination of the season in the league was almost painful. The very essence of the Barcelona midfield biased game played with such perfection is precisely what has made players like Lionel Messi and his partners up front so much better.

Sevilla offer Jorge Sampaoli contract extension amid Barcelona talk | ESPN
Sampaoli, whose current deal expires in June 2018, has had a hugely impressive first season at Sevilla and reports in Spain have linked him with the Barcelona coaching position should Luis Enrique not sign a new contract with the Catalan outfit.

Matuidi claims that when Verratti was down, he told Iniesta his midfield mate was the Spaniard’s heir. And Iniesta agreed, saying, "yes, that is what I think."

Former FC Barcelona and Current Juventus RB Dani Alves Attacks Barça Board

Alves had some strong words.

“They were phonies, scumbags.” That’s how current Juventus and former FC Barcelona defender Dani Alves categorizes Barça’s board, led by Josep Maria Bartomeu, in an interview with ABC. Despite persistent rumors that Alves would leave during his last years at Barcelona, the Brazilian claims "no one ever spoke to me to my face" about it.

Just days from Juventus’s clash with FC Porto in the UEFA Champions Leagute, Alves did not hold back. "The people in charge of FC Barcelona don't have any idea how to treat footballers. They did not respect me. They only offered me a renewal when FIFA sanctioned them."

That renewal was in 2015. Alves had played for Barcelona for eight years, from 2008 to 2016, when he left to join Juve.

Report: Sergi Roberto Will Play in Midfield Next Season

The Catalan does not want to keep playing as a fullback.

Sergi Roberto lost the ball leading to CD Leganés equalizing in Barcelona’s eventual 2-1 win. That goal put the result in the balance until a Lionel Messi penalty in the dying minutes rescued the three points.

According to a report in Sport, Roberto is fed up with playing on the right side of defense. He feels it’s not his optimal position, and his poor performances have left him feeling very down.

The report says the club has heard Roberto and will move him back into midfield, his natural position, next season. But at the moment, Barcelona is not spoiled for choice, doubly so with Aleix Vidal injured.

Javier Mascherano is the likeliest candidate to supplant Roberto, while an emergency singing is also possible.

The Right to Boo, or Why FC Barcelona Doesn’t Need Your Jeers

Just because you’re allowed, doesn’t mean it’s helpful.

FC Barcelona limped towards the finish line in a 2-1 win over CD Leganés, and still suffering from a hangover after a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, the fans spent some time booing and jeering the team.

It wasn’t a majority of the stadium to be fair, but many people felt the need to jeer the team. Andrés Iniesta stated, plainly, “jeers do not help.” Luis Enrique said he did not understand the point: “as a fan, whistling a player from your own team does not make sense.”

Supporters pay a lot of money to see their team play. It’s totally within their right to express themselves however they see fit, so long as it is not crossing certain lines (for example, racial abuse.)

The PSG game is one horrifically bad result, one that legitimately calls into question the entire Luis Enrique regime. It leads, inevitably, to completely-warranted criticism.

But criticism from afar is not the same as audible displeasure in the stadium. And while people are allowed to express their frustration, it is probably not in the team’s best interests for the fans to be anything but supportive while in the stands.

It’s extremely rare to find a player who appreciates booing. I don’t buy the idea that booing as punishment will lead to better performance. It’s much more common to hear players are affected in a negative way, leading to a vicious circle.

As bad as the team gets, jeering or other negative reactions from fans towards their own team is counterproductive. But, every fan who pays should be allowed to do it.

When it comes to discussions away from the stadium, that’s a different story. The players are probably going to be largely unaffected by that chatter, or at least it’s removed from the heat of the moment enough that it will produce a different result.

Should Luis Enrique’s Job Be on the Line?

Time to start asking the question.

Barcelona were unimpressive in a 2-1 win over relegation favorites CD Leganés, and this comes after a pathetic performance in which Paris Saint-Germain thrashed the Catalans 4-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

A return leg at the Camp Nou offers the slimmest of possibilities for a comeback against Paris, but, failing such a miracle, the question becomes: should Luis Enrique’s job be on the line in the middle of the season?

Luis Enrique has already been coy over signing a renewal, despite support from the locker room and the board room, at least outwardly. Him leaving at the end of the season looks all but assured unless Barcelona pull off something improbable in either La Liga or the Champions League. That would make for a sort of compromise: Luis Enrique leaves on his own terms, the fans thank him for their services, and everyone moves on.

But if results and performances continue at this level, there comes a point in which the coach could even be sacked. The problem is that great replacements are not in abundance at this stage of the season. Would a hypothetical replacement be good enough to give Barcelona a better chance than Luis Enrique?

That’s the biggest question that could keep Lucho on the coach’s bench even if things don’t improve dramatically. But in any case, unless the team shapes up quickly, things could turn ugly - including plenty of fan division.

Some will accuse the rest of not waking up to the grim reality that the coach is useless, while others will say pushing for the coach’s sack shows an unhelpful lack of loyalty. Let’s hope it doesn’t get to that point.

Off-the-radar: Raúl Tamudo

Sarthak Kumar tells the story of Raúl Tamudo, a legend who Espanyol fans call the "only" Raúl.

On 12th September, 2015, Raúl Tamudo – an Espanyol legend – took to the grass of the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat once again, the magnitude of the act quite evident on his shoulders.

After performing the honorary kick-off in his jeans, he left the Cornellá stadium looking as humble as when he had stepped on that grass for the first time in 1997.

We look back at the moments that defined his career, especially two end-of-season goals he scored that changed the fate of many La Liga clubs – for better or for worse.

Scene 1: 27th May, 2000

It could not have been more different. Espanyol were facing Atlético Madrid in the final of the Copa del Rey, and their runs to the final couldn’t have been more different. Espanyol had beaten Celta Vigo and Real Madrid; Atlético Madrid had beaten Rayo on away goals in the quarters and Barcelona forfeited the semifinals.

At the end of a crazy league season, where Atlético Madrid were relegated, the notion was that the Copa del Rey would be their consolation.

Boy, were they wrong.

Goalkeeper Toni Jiménez, who was in his first season at Atlético Madrid after having won the 1998 Zamora with (ironically) Espanyol, served as backup to José Francisco Molina. He was having a treacherous season, and only played cup games. And he was about to have a moment that would haunt him for ever.

The ball was in his hands. He was about to throw it in the air to kick it. And he did.

But Tamudo’s head beat him to the ball, and he scored into the open net. Tamudo had made his former teammate look silly, and in just the second minute of the game, Espanyol had quite literally snatched a goal.

And any last hope in Atlético Madrid’s season.

Funnily enough, he would also score in the second minute against Zaragoza in the 2006 Copa del Rey final, against César Sánchez, a Champions League winning keeper.

Scene 2: 9th June, 2007. 9:00pm

Real Madrid and Barcelona, both on top of the table, both with the same number of points but the Catalans are behind on head-to-head.

Real Madrid make the trip to La Romareda to face Real Zaragoza while Barcelona face city rivals Espanyol on home turf. Two games left in the season and both teams know victory was essential.

Over the next 90 minutes, the tables turned numerous times, so much so that even Sevilla were on top of the table for a few minutes. And so the two matches kicked off in perfect unison.

29th minute – Raúl Tamudo scores – a brilliant top-right-corner finish from inside the box, beating Víctor Valdés.

32th – Diego Milito scores a penalty after Pablo Aimar is fouled in the box.

43th – Messi scores this goal.

57th – Ruud van Nistelrooy powers in a header to level the scores. Seconds later at the Camp Nou Messi scores – again – a right-footed shot into the left bottom corner.

64th – Diego Milito scores again, this time drilling a low shot under Casillas

89th – Ruud Van Nistelrooy scores again, an inch out from the goal line.

At this point, Real Madrid are on 73 points and Barcelona on 75.

It looked like the league was sealed, for the final fixtures were easy – Madrid vs Mallorca and Barcelona vs Nastic.

It was.

And then it wasn’t.

Former Barcelona player Francisco Rufete, then playing for Espanyol, played a sumptuous low through ball past the Barcelona defense and the only striker available waited for Valdés to come to him. A long wait, but a true number nine goal. No complications, no extravagance. A simple, effective, precise finish.

The goal to end Barcelona’s La Liga hopes.

This was the year that Barcelona lost the UEFA Super Cup to Sevilla, the FIFA Club World Cup to Internacional of Porto Alegre, Brazil, were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the Round of 16 stage, and were dumped out of the Copa del Rey after a shameful 4–0 loss to Getafe in the semi finals.

Just one striker, scoring one dull, boring goal, to end one club’s hopes for one annual championship.

Scene 3: 13th May, 2012. 7:00pm

The league table reads 15th Granada (42 points), 16th Villarreal (41), 17th Rayo Vallecano (40), 18th Zaragoza (40).

As Villarreal entertain Atletico Madrid at El Madrigal and Zaragoza visit Getafe, Rayo Vallecano play Granada at the Vallekas, arguably the crunch game; both know that most probably, the loser will go down to play in La Segunda.

It wasn’t supposed to be that way. Rayo Vallecano were in eighth place after match day 27, and were two points off a Europa League place. Four points off a Champions League place.

But a poor record of three points – a solitary, albeit impressive, 6-0 win over Osasuna – from nine games, left them relegation candidates and needing a win. Only a win could save them.

On the polar opposite side were Zaragoza, who had given up mid-season, but an impressive run of six wins and a draw in nine had helped them remain in 18th, needing a win.

Granada had been in poor form all along – five points in their last six games hadn’t helped either. And Villarreal, playing in the Champions League, were in poor form too, but know a draw would be enough.

All that is about to change.

Zaragoza win 2–0 against Getafe, who were reduced to ten men, then to nine. And then to eight. Zaragoza were safe. Miraculously.

And till the 87th minute, Rayo Vallecano were relegated.

Except that three goals, in three stadiums, scored in four minutes, would leave a shocking surprise.

In the 88th minute, Falcao scores off a corner. 15th Granada (43), 16th Zaragoza (43), 17th Villarreal (41), 18th Rayo Vallecano (41). Level on points, but on head-to-head Villarreal were safe, and Rayo were relegated.

Seconds later, at the Vallekas, David Cobeño, the goalkeeper and captain of Rayo, is sent up for a corner. They have nothing to lose, but when the corner is cleared everyone starts to run. The minute the ball is loose, everyone is too. Some run backwards, some forward.

The ball somehow reaches the Granada box, where five Rayo players are standing. A shot is taken, saved. A shot by Michu hits the crossbar and rebounds. And there, standing near the goal line, a Spanish 5’10" striker tries his luck in an empty goal from a yard out. A header, a goal.

A goal to relegate a Champions League team with zero debt, to save the aspirations of a club in administration. Actually, two - Granada celebrate too, a while later, once they hear that Villarreal were beaten. The game that was to relegate at least one team, finished with both of them safe.

One goal.

Scene 4: 5th September, 2015

A 37-year-old Spanish professional football player retires from football. He retires after seeing Sabadell relegated to the Segunda B and being able to do nothing about it – a knee injury sidelined him for most of this season.

He ends up being the highest scoring Catalan and the highest scoring Espanyol player. He is a UEFA Cup finalist, losing to Sevilla on penalties; he scored five times for Spain in 13 appearances – all of them headers. He helped Spain qualify for the UEFA Euro 2008 with a crucial strike in Denmark. He is an Olympic Silver medalist, having helped Spain reach the final with a goal against USA.

But he was already a legend – from the day he scored that goal to deny a Champions League winning team the league title. He scored the Tamudazo. And then he saved Rayo Vallecano.

And yet - things could’ve gone so much differently. Espanyol fans may not have been going "There’s only one Raúl: Tamudo". In 2000, Dick Advocaat’s Rangers met the release clause in his contract and Espanyol were forcing him out because they were cash-strapped, but the move fell through when Dr Gert Jan Goudswaard advised against it.

There is now an Espanyol fan club named 'Doctor Gert, Diga 23', 23 being in reference to Tamudo’s shirt number, in honour of the doctor who unknowingly became part of making of the legend that is Tamudo.

I wrote a post on Raúl Tamudo way back in September 2015 (a few months after he had retired). It was my first ever article and I am still very proud of it. (Read it here). However, it was slightly incomplete - there were more aspects of his career that could have been detailed, and he has given interviews since which are very interesting and worth documenting. So I rewrote it and this article is reproduced from a series on the faces of Spanish football. You can read it here.

Barcelona vs Leganés, 2017 La Liga: Final Score 2-1, Mediocre Barça win late

Three points, and that's all.

Barcelona responded to that humiliating loss in Paris with a 2-1 win at home against Leganés. The Blagurana played mediocre football throughout the match and paid for their lack of ideas and desire to score, but a late penalty gave Barça a victory that is not exciting and does not give hope for the future.

FIRST HALF

It seemed like Barça were ready to run over Leganés when Lionel Messi scored after just three minutes, and the Blaugrana were displaying a hunger to press high up the pitch, get the ball back and create chances. We did see that for the first 20 minutes, but as time went on Barça lost some of their intensity and kept the ball without a real threat to Leganés.

The visitors were very compact on defense and tried to hit the Catalans on the counter, and Ter Stegen was twice called into action with two great saves to keep Barça ahead.

At halftime, the performance was good, but the team lacked just a little bit more will to score more in the final period.

SECOND HALF

Leganés had a good chance that forced another great stop from Ter Stegen to start the second half, but Barça quickly regained control and looked to find spaces in the visitors' defense. There were some chances thanks to Neymar and Rafinha's movement, but Barça couldn't score and the one-goal lead was getting more and more dangerous.

Until the Blaugrana paid for their lack of goals. Sergi Roberto lost an easy ball close to the box, and Machís found Unai López who scored the equalizer for Leganés. Barça had to score a game-winner and went forward looking for it, but there were no clear ideas and desperation took over. Until Neymar's brilliance gave Barça a penalty that Messi buried with ease to win the game.

The three points are important, but the performance was poor and the team does not look good at the moment. Lots and lots and lots to improve.

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Roberto, Umtiti, Mathieu, Digne (Alba); Rakitic, Gomes (Iniesta), Rafinha (Denis); Messi, Suárez, Neymar

Goals: Messi (4', 90')

Leganés: Herrerín; Tito, Mantovani, Siovas (Insua), Rico; Martín, Morán (U.López); El Zhar, Gabriel, Szymanowski (Machís); Guerrero

Goal: U.López (71')

Barcelona vs. Leganes: Suarez, Messi combine for another masterpiece

Of course

Lionel Messi has struck in just the third minute of the match against Leganes in their La Liga match. It’s his 16th goal of the league season, but it was Luis Suarez who made it all happen with a fantastic outside of the boot assist, his eighth helper of the season.

These two are no stranger to teaming up for great goals and this one is no exception. Just two world-class footballers doing what they do best.

Can Barça bounce back from humiliation in Paris?

Barcelona suffered humiliation in historical proportions on Tuesday against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital. It was a 4-0 defeat that exposed the Catalan giants like we've not seen in a long, long time, and it raised immense doubts over the real quality of this team and its manager.

Luis Enrique led the Blaugrana to major success in his first two seasons in charge, but the current campaign has not been the best in terms of performances and results, and the horrible loss in Paris caused many to question whether or not Enrique should stay as Barça manager, and if it's best to rebuild the squad and bring in better players.

This could easily be an overreaction to a bad loss, and Barça have an opportunity to prove for the rest of the season that the PSG match was just an outlier that does not reflect the true colors of the world's best club.

Lionel Messi and Co. hope to show the world what this squad is made of, and Sunday's La Liga match against Leganés will be the first chance to pick up a strong victory and begin rebuilding a team hurt by disappointment in France. You should not miss today's game. You really should not.

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Leganes: Team News, Match Preview

Let's pretend Tuesday didn't happen!

FC Barcelona will be looking to put their midweek embarrassment firmly behind them tomorrow evening, when they return to La Liga action against Leganes at the Camp Nou. For the Blaugrana, this match has perhaps become the most important of the season; following their shocking 4-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, the media has been dominated by metaphorical obituaries, both for FC Barcelona’s season, Luis Enrique’s tenure as head coach – and in some cases, even for the players themselves.

It is now down to the same players and the same coach to set about proving the doubters wrong, to remind everyone watching across Spain and the rest of the world that reports of Barcelona’s sudden and dramatic demise have been greatly exaggerated. Progression in the UEFA Champions League may be all but impossible, but there are two more trophies still to play for; the Blaugrana are just 90 minutes away from lifting one title this season, and if they can start to put together a string of good results, there’s no reason why the La Liga title race can’t go down to the wire as well.

Real Madrid’s afternoon victory over RCD Espanyol saw Los Blancos extend their lead at the top of the pile to four points, having played one game fewer than Luis Enrique’s side. Cristiano Ronaldo appears to be back to his best after a somewhat indifferent season by his superhuman standards, and Zinedine Zidane was also able to welcome Gareth Bale back into the squad today, with the Welshman scoring a goal on his return from injury.

In other words, Real appear to be in fine shape for the remainder of the season, but if this week has proven anything, it’s that nothing is certain in football. With tougher fixtures to follow in the coming weeks and months for Real Madrid, the important thing is that FC Barcelona simply keep pace and maintain the pressure. As Lenny Kravitz would say, “it ain’t over till it’s over”.

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Arda Turan and Javier Mascherano are expected to continue to miss out through injury, while Luis Enrique will also have to contend with the absence of Sergio Busquets tomorrow, as the Catalan is suspended for picking up his fifth yellow card of the season last weekend against Deportivo Alaves. The lengthy midfield injury list means that Carles Alena has been training with the squad once again and he could therefore take a place on the bench tomorrow.

The midweek defeat could prompt Luis Enrique to rotate his squad, however it is equally likely that he will send a similar starting line-up out to see what kind of response they can provide. Ivan Rakitic will replace Sergio Busquets in midfield, but aside from that, it’s unlikely that Enrique will want to make too many changes. For the first time this year, Barcelona will have a week before their next game, and as such the focus should be on securing the result above anything else.

LEGANES

A plucky side from the outskirts of Madrid, Leganes are like Getafe’s somewhat more likeable cousin – even if they also seem destined to potentially fall back into the second tier based on their current form. Leganes are without a win in their past 12 matches, and they’ve only managed one win in their past 18. This dramatic loss of form has seen Asier Garitano’s side drop ever closer to the relegation zone, where they hold just a two point cushion over Sporting Gijon in 18th place.

In terms of the match tomorrow, Leganes will be without the suspended Ruben Perez, while Mamadou Kone, David Timor, Roger Ibanez and Ander Serrantes all miss out through injury. Without a proven goalscorer in their midst, Leganes are finding it difficult this season and it’s hard to see that working in their favour against a wounded Barcelona.

FORM GUIDE

Barcelona: WWWDWL

Leganes: LLDDLL

CD Leganes 1-5 FC Barcelona – 17th September 2016 – La Liga

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): ter Stegen; Roberto, Pique, Umtiti, Alba; Rakitic, Gomes, Iniesta; Messi, Suarez, Neymar

Leganes (4-2-3-1): Herrerin; Bustinza, Mantovani, Insua, Rico; Alberto, Gabriel; Samu, Bueno, Szymanowski; Guerrero

MATCH PREDICTION
