Former Barcelona manager Tata Martino: "Messi has been superlative this year"

Former Barcelona and current Argentina national team manager Tata Martino is preparing to call up the Albiceleste 23-man squad for the Copa América, to be contested starting mid-June. And the skipper was full of praise for Lionel Messi, whom he continues to coach since last season, on an interview he did with a South American newspaper.

Here's a few highlights of his answers:

"Messi knows that he needs a good team around him, but more importantly, he now has all the tools necessary to make his team play better. We now have a much more mature, better team player, and that has a lot to do with what happened in the last World Cup. There we came to see a player less spectacular individually, but a lot more aware of what his responsibilities were within the team.

"That's great for me, because I know I'll always have his individual talent, I'll continue to have now and every time he wants to shine. Ever since 2015 started Messi has been superlative in almost every match, so we hope to have him the same way in the Copa."

Looks like Tata misses being with Leo every day.

Report: Juventus Accept PSG Offer for Paul Pogba, Spurning Barcelona

The transfer rumors surrounding Pogba continnue, does this have any weight?

PSG have won the race to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus for the fee of about €80 million, according to Goal.com at least.

The interest from Paris is real. PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed talks with the young Frenchman are indeed ongoing, but nothing else has come forth as far as official confirmation. There's reason to be skeptical of this transfer.

There's first a sporting issue. Juventus are arguably a better team than PSG, at least if you consider who is still in the Champions League and who is not. Would Pogba leave Juve for a team that's not an upgrade? Well, possibly, if there was enough money in it... but it's something to think about.

The offer, however, seems a bit low. You'll recall we reported on Barcelona's attempts to nab Pogba before. Here's a link if you missed it.

We were told that Barcelona offered €78 million plus a player worth at least €12 million for Pogba, an offer Juventus rejected.

So if €82+ million was not enough, why would just 80 do? The reality is there's very little reason to think it will, unless PSG also offered other players or some REALLY nice boeuf bourguignon in addition to the cash.

Paris have more money than Scrooge McDuck, and it's surely attractive for them to have the world's best, or at least most expensive, French player. But this deal in itself does not seem likely.

Barcelona to tour United States in 2015 preseason; will face LA Galaxy among others

Barcelona has already made plans for the 2015 preseason.

The Blaugrana will take part in the 3rd edition of the North American Internation Champions Cup, a tournament organized by Relevant Sports and that takes place between July 11th and August 5th. The competition is played in a league format. Each team plays a total of four games and the winner is the one that gets the most points. But the points system is not one that most European sides are used to. There are three points for a win, while if a game ends in a draw, there is a penalty shootout, and the winning team gets two points and the loser gets one.

Barça will tour the United States for the first three games of the Cup: on July 21th, they'll play the LA Galaxy at the Rose Bowl. Four days later, they'll play Manchester United at Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers -- so I guess we'll finally see someone making accurate passes in that stadium, right Colin Kaepernick? For the final game of the U.S. tour, the Blaugrana will face their Premier League rivals Chelsea at FedEx Field in Washington, D.C., home of the Washington Redskins -- or, as I like to call it, the Washington Professional Football Team, but that's a topic for another day.

For the fourth and final game of the Champions Cup, Barça will travel to Florence, Italy on May 2nd to play Fiorentina. The Catalans did not make a huge tour this past preseason, as they only traveled to Italy and France for friendly games against Napoli and Nice after a period of training in England. Not this year. Gotta make some money, right?

Eric Abidal Heaps Praise on MSN and Current Barca Squad

The former Barcelona defender, while speaking to Efe, praised dynamic trio MSN and believes that Luis Enrique's squad are better than Pep Guardiola's treble winning team.

Eric Abidal, a beloved ex-Barca defender, spoke very highly of Luis Enrique's current squad to Spanish international news agency Efe.

Abidal was a prominent player during his spell at Camp Nou from 2007/2008 - 2012/2013. He won 15 trophies, while wearing the blaugrana shirt, and played a vital role in Pep Guardiola's treble winning side. With the utmost respect towards his former gaffer, Abidal said this about the current squad.

"I am aware of everything that Pep achieved at Barcelona, and he has achieved a lot at Bayern, but I feel that Barcelona are stronger than ever before," Abidal told Efe"Barcelona appear to be in great shape. There are two important games coming up in the Champions League, but we have to focus on La Liga, too. The club know the Champions League very well and we have to go for it as always and work hard in order to try to reach the final."

Barca fans are excited at the prospect of another treble-winning season. Much of this success is due to the increasingly dangerous and entertaining play of Barca's front three. Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr. and Luis Suàrez have scored 102 goals during this campaign, breaking the previous mark of 99 goals set by Messi-Eto'o-Henry in 2008-2009, which also happened to be the last time that Barca won the treble (Coincidence?). This is what Abidal had to say about the dynamic trio.

"They understand each other very well on the pitch, which is the most important thing. It isn't easy to have stars and be able to always be on top form, but I think Barca are doing that very well at the moment."

Abidal believes that Luis Enrique's team is better than any other team to have come before. There are still several games left until the season ends, anything can happen. Winning the treble will most definitely settle any argument about whether this team will go down as the best ever. All us Barca fans can do is support our beloved team and hope that our dreams come true.

Report: Denis Suárez to stay at Sevilla for second year of loan

It looks like Denis Suárez will have to develop a little more until he returns to Barcelona.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Blaugrana club has decided not to call the midfielder back in the first year of his loan to Sevilla, so the 21-year-old will remain in Andalusia for the full two years of his contract with the Rojiblancos.

There was a bit of expectations among sources that Barça could call him back this summer in light of the transfer ban, but with Ivan Rakitic and Rafinha Alcântara's amazing performances this season, coach Luis Enrique is beyond satisfied with the showing of his current midfielders, so he would rather see Denis continue to develop in a bigger role away from Barça instead of bringing him in too soon to compete for a spot in a deep squad.

Plus, the coaching staff continues to be impressed by Sergi Samper's development at Barça B, and 'Mini Busi' is the favorite to earn a call to The Big Show next season, according to sources. If Samper indeed steps into the big stage, Suárez would have even less opportunities at midfield in the 2015-16 campaign, so keeping him in Seville is an easy decision.

In addition to that, Sevilla's manager Unai Emery is in awe with Denis' development in a short period under his guidance. Unlike the Gerard Deulofeu situation, the club is extremely happy with Suárez's commitment and his performances on the field, so it's a no-brainer for them to accept Barça's request to keep him around one more year.

Denis has a tricky contract situation. The two-year loan agreement comes with a buy option of €6 million for the Sevillistas if they want to sign the player. If they exercise that option, Barça has a €9 million clause they could exercise to buy Suárez back. So, if next season goes well, Sevilla will earn €3 million from a loan. What a deal.

Real keep pressure on Barcelona | Sky Sports Football
Real Madrid kept up the pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona by beating Almeria 3-0 at the Bernabeu to return to within two points of their fierce rivals. Twenty-four hours after Barcelona dismantled Getafe 6-0 to go five points clear at the summit, Carlo Ancelotti's side were clinical against Sergi Barjuan's strugglers as a stunning James Rodriguez volley, a Mauro dos Santos own-goal and a late Alvaro Arbeloa strike sealed a routine victory.

Ronaldo rage in Madrid as goals dry up for Cristiano - Goal.com
His finishing was wayward after that and one fine run was followed by a wild effort which flew well over the bar in the second half and was greeted by groans from the Madrid fans. And the evening ended with Arbeloa's strike - only the eighth of his entire career. But instead of being happy for his teammate, Ronaldo smashed the ball back into the net with anger and trudged to the center circle shaking his head.

The striker, back at his boyhood club on loan from AC Milan, came off the bench to fire an impressive winner in the 73rd minute at El Madrigal, in the process boosting Atleti to within nine points of leaders Barcelona with four games remaining. Second-placed Real Madrid are seven points away.

Atleti may recall loan players | Football Espana

Reports in Spain have suggested Los Rojiblancos, as well as neighbours Real Madrid, could be prevented from signing players in the next two transfer windows for breaching the rules concerning the signing of young players.

Carlos Bacca scores twice as Sevilla triumph | Sky Sports Football
Sevilla kept their quest for Champions League football alive with a convincing 3-1 win at struggling Eibar. Carlos Bacca scored twice inside 15 minutes to put the visitors in charge, and in the second half Jose Antonio Reyes restored the two-goal lead after Federico Piovacarri pulled one back for the hosts.

Asenjo injury blow for Villarreal | Football Espana
It is the third time Asenjo has suffered such an injury, both in his right and left knees, the first time being when he played for Atletico Madrid in 2010 and then when he was on loan at Malaga the following year. Tests on Thursday morning at the Hospital Rey Don Jaime in Castellon have confirmed the original diagnosis and he is expected to be out of action for a minimum of six months.

Nolito nets winner at the death | Sky Sports Football
Nolito struck at the death to give Celta Vigo a last-gasp 1-0 win over Malaga and breathe life into the Galicians' hopes of qualifying for Europe. The in-form forward smashed home a loose ball in the area in the 89th minute to decide an evenly-matched game and turn the race for the final European place upside down.

La Liga: FC Barcelona 6-0 Getafe CF: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's commanding win against Getafe.

Passes: 20
Pass Accuracy: 95%
Shots Faced: 3
Saves Made: 3
Clearances: 1

Bostjan says: 8.0

Considering how little Getafe actually got across the halfway line Bravo was actually quite busy. He had to make a few good saves, none better than the one early in the game when he was beaten by a chip shot, but recovered in time to clear the ball away before it crossed the line. There was another time when a shot got past him, in the second half, but that time he was saved by the post. Throughout the game Bravo was calming presence at the back and helped start attacking plays with a good passing day.

Dani Alves

Bostjan says: 7.5

Not one of Alves’ best games of the season, but against Getafe it was more than enough. He started of brightly, taking two shots in the early minutes, but neither found the back of the net. But as the game went on Alves started to lose steam, making a couple poor defensive plays that could’ve cost Barcelona. Was subbed off quickly thereafter to get some much needed rest before the final stretch.

Marc Bartra

Pass Accuracy: 97%
Tackles: 4
Interceptions: 2

Fouls: 0

Bostjan says: 8.0

Another excellent performance by Barcelona’s youngest half-back. While he did initially lose Fredy Hinestroza for the early chance, Bartra went on to have a whale of a game which he almost capped off with a goal, but his header ended up being saved. Out of the several defensive plays he made, the best of the bunch came midway through the second half when he did very well to get in the way of Fredy’s shot, redirecting it just enough for it not to cross the line.

Jeremy Mathieu

Passes: 76
Pass Accuracy: 90%

Aerial Duels Won: 1
Fouls: 1

Bostjan says: 7.0

After a couple of games in which he didn’t start, Mathieu was back in the starting eleven, but some rust was evident. At times he strayed out of position, something a team of a better quality would’ve made Barcelona pay dearly for. He also lost the ball on a couple of plays where he really shouldn’t have had. But it wasn’t all bad as he also made numerous very important interventions that helped Barcelona keep another clean sheet.

Adriano Correia
7.1
Minutes played: 90

Shots/Shots on Target: 1/0
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 3
Clearances: 1
Key Passes: 0
Fouls: 2

Bostjan says: 7.5

This was probably Adriano’s best game of the season. While he didn’t necessary focus a whole lot on offense, though he did fire a relatively poor shot off target, he always did very to keep the ball moving, making more passes than any player on the pitch. Adriano also made several good looking defensive plays, highlighted by a play at the stroke of halftime when he showed his speed to track back and easily steal the ball away from Babá.

Sergio Busquets

Sam says: 7.5

Getafe didn’t really offer a lot going forward so it was a relatively quiet night for Busquets in terms of defending. But this did allow him to be more of an attacking influence and help give the ball to Xavi or Rafinha who then created the chances. Passing as usual was very good with a success rate of 94% and 51 passes made.

Xavi

Sam says: 9.0

A performance that would have you believe Xavi is 25 not 35. He was at his absolute best, dictating play from midfield, finding players with eye of the needle passes and even getting on the scoresheet with a beautifully placed finish. Collecting the ball from Neymar on the edge of the area, he wrapped his foot around it and it left the keeper with no chance. Next he turned provider as his clever flick on the edge of the area found Suárez, who in turn found the net. Great performance and a 96.7% pass accuracy on top.

Rafinha

Sam says: 8.5

Despite not getting on the scoresheet himself, Rafinha proved an attacking threat throughout. He managed to get two shots away, both off target, but his passing helped open up Getafe and find the front three. He also completed five dribbles which dragged defenders away and created spaces for others to work in.

Luis Suarez

Ahmed says: 10.0

One of many stars of the show. What a performance. Scored two magnificent goals, the first was an unbelievable volley and the second a stunning curler from outside the box. Suarez also earned the penalty for the opener and assisted Neymar for his goal. The Uruguayan missed a decent chance midway through the second-half. Was everywhere and will be giving Getafe defenders nightmares for nights to come.

Lionel Messi

Shots/Shots on Target: 5/4
Fouls Won: 4
Successful Dribbles: 5
Key Passes: 6
Turnovers: 4
Fouls: 1

Ahmed says: 10.0

Another star. Opened the scoring with a Panenka penalty and his second was an outstanding curler from the right side. Messi set up Suarez for the genius volley and was immaculate both in attack and defence. Had a few chances to score late in the second-half but was thwarted by Guaita every time.

Neymar

Minutes played: 90

Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Tackles: 1
Key Passes: 2

Turnovers: 7

Ahmed says: 9.5

Looked sharp on the left-wing all evening and consistently got the better of the opposition. Brilliant dribble and finish for his goal and completed six dribbles – more than any other player on the pitch. Neymar also set up Xavi’s goal. MSN have now motored past 100 goals for the season.

Sergi Roberto
7.2
Minutes played: 45
Touches: 34
Passes: 31
Pass Accuracy: 97%
Key Passes: 1

Arron says: 7.0

Sergi Roberto's recent transition to 'back-up pivote' continued on Tuesday, as the Catalan midfielder replaced Sergio Busquets at half-time with the three points already in the bag. As such, there wasn't much we could draw from Roberto's performance; he was supremely accurate with his passing, stepped in defensively to make a difference where he could -- all against an opposition that had quite understandably given up. Maybe a start against Cordoba would help us decide whether he still has a future at the club.

Pedro
6.4
Minutes played: 32
Touches: 23
Passes: 22
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0

Arron says: 6.5

Six goals scored on the night, and not a single one of them by Pedro -- that pretty much summarises his season for the Blaugrana, at least since the introduction of Luis Suarez in October. While Pedro is waiting for his first goal since early February, it's perhaps the nature of his performances that worry me the most as he constantly operates on the periphery of the game, rarely even getting close to a sight of goal. Maybe I'm being harsh though, it's not like we needed him to step up and deliver, is it?

Martin Montoya
6.4
Minutes played: 23
Touches: 14
Passes: 13
Pass Accuracy: 92%
Tackles: 1

Arron says: 6.0

The Catalan full-back was probably introduced to give Dani Alves a rousing ovation on the same day that he moved a step closer to extending his stay in Catalunya; and if anything, Montoya gave the crowd all the more reason to applaud Alves for this reported decision. I know the game was over, but Montoya struggled on the right-flank, giving away a couple of fouls against a sub-standard opposition in his brief time on the field. Let's hope we see better next time.

The Team 9.2
Passes: 781
Pass Accuracy: 90%
Shots/Shots on Target: 21/12
Tackles: 22
Aerial Battles Won: 46%
Fouls Won/Committed: 5/11

Arron says: 10.0

An easy decision; this was arguably Barcelona's most emphatic performance of the Luis Enrique era, although in terms of the difficulty of the win, I'd still rank this behind our 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in January. Whatever, it was easily a perfect 10/10, if only for the dominance displayed by our superstar offensive unit.

Luis Enrique
8.8

Arron says: 10.0

Well, some of us thought that he would rest one of the fabled MSN trident, but he didn't and was richly rewarded with a superlative display from each member of the trio. Everything else went according to plan as well; on current form, Enrique might just be the man with the Midas touch.

MOTM - Messi
50%

Bostjan says: Suarez

There were many candidates for the Man of the Match award but two separated themselves from the pack. One was the eventual winner, Messi, who picked up exactly half of the votes. The second was Suarez with 34%. Rounding out the top three was the evergreen Xavi with 13% of the votes.

102 goals for the FC Barcelona 'trident': Leo Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez | FC Barcelona
The attacking ‘trident’ of Leo Messi, Neymar Jr and Luis Suárez is still delivering the goods. They scored five of the six goals on Tuesday night against Getafe to take their combined season total up to 102 in all competitions. No club in Europe can presume to have a frontline that’s so effective at putting the ball where it belongs – in the back of the net.

Five talking points from FC Barcelona v Getafe | FC Barcelona
Luis Enrique made four changes to the side that had won 2-0 at the Power8 stadium just a few days before. He opted for a fresh back four (Bartra and Mathieu), was forced due to Alba’s suspension to field a different left-back (Adriano) and played a different piece in midfield (Xavi). Getafe, who are suffering from a string of injury woes, also played an unfamiliar starting eleven.

After hitting Getafe for six, double-goalscorer Luis Suárez told the press that "we know that every team comes to try to give us a game, so we decided go out as strong as we could right from the start. We know we have big things to win, and it’s so important to have such a great connection between the team, fans and coaches."

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez break Barcelona goal record | Football News | Sky Sports
That’s a Barcelona club record for an attacking trio, surpassing the 100 goals scored by Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry in the 2008/09 treble-winning season under Pep Guardiola. With at least seven games left to play this year – potentially eight, should they reach the Champions League final – Messi, Neymar and Suarez still have plenty of time to further extend that record.

Luis Enrique and Ancelotti uncertain futures Graham Hunter - ESPN FC
Even by Spanish standards, it would take a notable degree of short-sightedness from the leading clubs for Atletico Madrid to be the lone team of La Liga's top five sides to begin next season with their current coach. There are some identical threads in the stories that weave their way through all five -- Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madtid, Valencia and Sevilla -- but, equally, there are also idiosyncrasies in each instance.

Real Madrid and Atletico face transfer ban - reports - ESPN FC
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are set to be hit with one year transfer bans by FIFA for irregularities in signing youth players, according to widespread reports in Spain. Cadena SER's programme El Larguero and Cadena COPE's El Programa de las 12 both reported last night that Madrid and Atletico Madrid would be subject to the same kind of sanction which has left the Catalans unable to sign players until January 2016, relating to irregularities in the signing of young players.

Atletico Madrid deny media reports of FIFA transfer ban | Sky Sports
Atletico Madrid have confirmed they have not been notified by FIFA or the Spanish Football Federation that they are under investigation over transfers of U18 players. Spanish media reports on Tuesday claimed that Real Madrid and city rivals Atletico could be set for a possible FIFA transfer ban similar to that enforced on Barcelona.

Athletic Bilbao 1 Real Sociedad 1 | Sky Sports Football
Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad had to settle for a point each after a full-blooded and controversial Basque derby ended 1-1 on Tuesday. With both teams nestled in mid-table in the Primera Division, you could be forgiven for expecting this encounter to have less bite than usual but that certainly was not the the case.

Luis Suárez: 'I'm trying to help the team as much as I can, doesn't matter how'

Luis Suárez is everything Barcelona hoped he would be on the field. His 21 goals and double-digit assists despite not playing football for four months are impressive. He has brought a level of fight and intensity that the team simply did not have before, and that has changed the way his teammates approach the game.

But is perhaps off the field that Suárez is being more impressive and surprising. Known for being a head case in every place he's played in his career, the Uruguayan has been a model of professionalism at Barça. He always said he dreamed of being a Blaugrana, and he wouldn't do anything to mess up that dream now that he finally realized it. And he's maintaining his word.

Suárez is a focused man, and he doesn't care about his individual accolades as long as the club reaches its goals, and that is becoming more and more clear with his performances and his demeanor. In an interview following his brace on Barça's 6-0 win over Getafe on Tuesday, Luisito highlighted how focused he is on helping the team, and scoring goals is not his motivation to play for Barça. And he reminded how important the final stretch of the season is, and that there are no room for mistakes if the Blaugrana want to be on top of the world again.

"The only thing I am trying to do is help the team as much as I can. It doesn't matter if that is with goals, with assists or by defending."

"We are aware that every rival that we will play against will be looking for three points. We knew that tonight and we knew the pressure that Getafe would apply, like they did when we played them away.

"And for that reason we have started the match with a lot of effort from the very first minute. We knew we couldn't mess up."

"There is commitment from all the team, the fans, the coaching staff... We are obliged to achieve important things.

"Now we are in the most important part of the season and we can't make mistakes."

Report: 'Serious talks' begin between Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund for Ilkay Gundogan

If you're a Barcelona fan, you always watch football from other leagues and you wonder, "which guy I'm watching right now would fit best at Barça?" Perhaps the most perfect Barça-guy-who's-not-at-Barça today is Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan.

Every time you watch him, you picture him in a Blaugrana uniform. It seems like Gundogan is an unanimous fan candidate for Barça's midfield once the Catalans are free to sign players in 2016. But for the longest time, "Gundogan to Barça" was just a fan dream. There were never any strong indications that the Camp Nou people were looking at the Germany international as a potential target.

Until now.

Sources told Barça Blaugranes that Barça and Dortmund have engaged in transfer talks for the 24-year-old. Ariedo Braida, the club's sporting director, reached out to BVB and formally expressed his interest in working out a deal for the midfielder. If the talks advance quickly, Braida plans a trip to Germany to work on the details in person. Remember, Barça is free to negotiate and even sign players in 2015, as long as they don't register the deals until January 1st of next year.

The interest in Gundogan started to rise with his return to form in Germany. He battled injuries all of last season which diminished his market value. None of the top European teams have been linked to him so far, which would make this a steal for Barça if it happens.

Am I allowed to pray for this to work? I really want to see Gundogan playing at Barça. Please, Football Gods? Amen.

Luis Enrique calls Barcelona "unstoppable" in Getafe win

Luis Enrique is one happy man right now.

With every press conference after a win, Barcelona's manager seems more and more delighted with his players and their accomplishments on the field. It was no different for the world-destroying 6-0 win over Getafe on Tuesday. And Lucho had some really high praise for his squad following one of the season's best showings.

Enrique went as far as to call his team "unstoppable" if they continue to perform like they did today, and he sees his team in good spirits going into the home stretch of La Liga and the season as a whole. Lucho also commented on the performance of one Xavi Hernández, who enjoyed a bit of a revival evening against Getafe. Here is a few highlights of the coach's post-match conference:

"I don’t remember ever seeing a game with quite so many spectacular goals. When the team is as effective as that, they’re unstoppable."

"I want to congratulate the team. Things could have turned difficult today but the players resolved the situation in the best possible way".

Goal creation

"We created a lot of chances, a lot of pressure situations. The team was well positioned"

"What I like are the things that enable us to create these goalscoring chances".

Top form

"Who can guarantee that we’ll keep up this high standard of play? Football can produce all kinds of surprises"

"We’re not going to start taking it easy. We know there are still four games left to play. Are we’re up against a very dignified opponent in Real Madrid."

"We’re not thinking about what might happen, we’re thinking about doing everything possible to make sure it happens."

Solid defence

"We don’t only have a team that creates goalscoring opportunities. We also know how to defend. There is the attacking side to what we do, but also the defensive side."

"There is still room for improvement. I don’t doubt that we can still get better. But I don’t remember ever seeing so many great goals in the same game."

Xavi the legend

"I have known Xavi since I was a player and he was just coming up from the youth team. He’s a player from another galaxy and he can play as long as he wants. He’s very strong physically. Get the ball to him, and he’ll always get it back to you, he never loses that quality. We all know how much Barça means to him and he’ll decide to do what’s best for Barça"

'MSN' becomes highest scoring trio in Barcelona history

They doubted it when it was formed. Now they kneel before it.

The trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar Jr. was assembled to put Barcelona back on the track to glory. They were put together to make history, and to become the single most scary trident on the planet -- sorry, BBC. They are now.

On Tuesday night's 6-0 destruction of Getafe, 'MSN' combined to find the net five times, with a brace each for Messi and Suárez, plus a contribution from Neymar. With that manita of scores, The Death Trio reached 102 goals this season, becoming the highest scoring triumvirate in the history of the Catalan club. In 2015 alone, they have bagged 59 goals together, ten more than the entire Real Madrid roster. Incredible.

In 2008-2009, Messi, Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto'o combined to reach an astonishing 100 goals on that season, in which Barcelona won everything. Now that 'MSN' has surpassed them, does that mean the titles are coming back?

Even if they don't, the doubters can't say anything. The Death Trio works.

La Liga: FC Barcelona 6-0 Getafe CF: Match Review

A recap of Barcelona's sensational midweek thrashing of Getafe CF, as goals from Lionel Messi (2), Luis Suarez (2), Neymar and Xavi rounded off a memorable win for the Blaugrana

FC Barcelona produced one of the best performances of the season so far on Tuesday night, as they comprehensively overwhelmed mid-table Getafe CF at the Camp Nou en route to an emphatic 6-0 victory. With the Suarez, Messi, Neymar trident starting up top, Barcelona immediately established themselves as the superior side and before too long, their dominance was reflected in the scoreline.

Lionel Messi got the ball rolling with a penalty after 10 minutes, before Luis Suarez, Neymar and Xavi struck within the space of five incredible first-half minutes to extend Barça’s lead to four within the first half-hour. Luis Suarez added a fifth before the break, and Messi rounded off the scoring with a sixth just after the break. Watch out Bayern Munich; Barcelona are better than ever before.

As expected, Luis Enrique made four changes to the side that triumphed in the Catalan derby on Saturday, as Marc Bartra, Jeremy Mathieu, Adriano Correia and Xavi rotated into the line-up, possibly with one eye on next week's clash with Bayern Munich. Moving out of the starting XI was the suspended Jordi Alba, along with Gérard Piqué, Javier Mascherano and Andres Iniesta, all of whom got some well deserved rest. This of course meant another start in attack for Barça's fabled attacking trio of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar; would this be enough to secure another victory for the Blaugrana?

***

Perhaps similar to the weekend, Barcelona made a good, promising start to affairs at the Camp Nou; maybe they weren't as dominant as they were on Saturday but they were still superior and it didn't take long for this to be reflected in the scoreline.

Full of confidence following his recent run of good form, Luis Suarez has often been the key to unlocking opposing defenses in recent fixtures and tonight was no different. All it took was a smart run by the Uruguayan and a pass to match from Marc Bartra and Suarez was soon sent tumbling to the turf by Alvaro Arroyo. The referee had no choice but to point to the spot and up stepped Lionel Messi to apply the finish.

With his chequered recent history from the penalty spot, this was far from a given but Messi kept his cool and then some, almost humiliating Kiko Casilla with his cheeky, impudent finish.

10 minutes gone at the Camp Nou and Getafe's gameplan was in ruins. They entered proceedings hoping to frustrate the Blaugrana and gain another point, but now they were facing an uphill battle to merely avoid disaster. With 80 minutes to go, it seemed like a question of how many goals Barça would go on to score.

Heck, after Claudio Bravo helped maintain our slender lead with an impressive double-save to deny Fredy Hinestroza and Baba Diawara, the more relevant question would become: how many could Barça score in the first-half alone?

After creating the first goal, it seemed apt that Luis Suarez would go one better and score the second of the evening. It was especially apt given that it was Messi who was returning the favour. His pass was sublime as per usual and Suarez displayed all the composure we’ve grown to expect from him, coolly dispatching his volley past the helpless Casilla in the Getafe net. 25 minutes were on the clock, Barça had doubled their lead.

But they wouldn’t stop there. Within minutes, Neymar had added another, scoring arguably the best goal of the game so far. All it took was a drop of the shoulder and Neymar was past a litany of bamboozled Getafe defenders, ready to apply a superb finish into the bottom corner to score Barcelona's third of the night. Getafe's night was going from bad to worse, and then it hit rock bottom.

How you might ask? Well, Xavi had the answer, compounding their misery and an incredible spell of dominance from the hosts to score Barcelona's fourth. This time it was Neymar who provided the assist, teeing up our club captain for a strike on goal from outside the area. Having seen his team utterly destroy Getafe in the past half hour, it was obvious that Xavi would oblige by testing his luck -- and the end result suggested he should do so more often, as his shot arrowed into the top corner of Casilla's net. Superb.

Poor Getafe, they were punch drunk and Barcelona just kept up serving up the shots, so much so that the Madrid-based outfit probably won’t remember the first period. The main culprit was Luis Suarez, and he got his second of the night to seal the first-half Manita, again displaying his clinical finishing ability to strike an Ovechkin-esque first-timer from the edge of the area off a cheeky flicked assist from Xavi.

Sensational. Relentless. Irrepressible.

***

With a five goal lead at the break, one could have forgiven FC Barcelona for taking their foot off the gas after the interval. I mean, the three points were secured and we’ve played a lot of football recently. Why not take a break, mid-match?

Well, that wouldn’t help us score more goals now would it? Sergio Busquets might have been withdrawn for Sergi Roberto, but Lionel Messi is in the race for the Pichichi and he was more than happy to continue piling on the misery for poor old Getafe, grabbing Barça’s sixth of the night just minutes after the restart.

Again, it was Luis Suarez who was the architect, feeding Messi in space ready for the Argentine to pull the trigger and unleash another superlative strike on goal, resulting in yet another spectacular Barça goal. This was just unfair.

Luis Enrique’s response to the sixth?

Bring on another striker of course!

Enter Pedro for Xavi around the hour mark, albeit after Barça had slowed the tempo of their play somewhat markedly. Now we were content to just pass the ball around and retain possession, as a little bit of professional courtesy kicked in. We didn’t want to rack up 10 goals on the night, because what would have been the point? Also, aren’t we saving that for Bayern Munich next week?

Even in spite of the changes and our switch back down to first gear, Barça still created chances and perhaps should have added to their tally. Suarez blazed over from close range, a penalty appeal was turned down and Messi forced a fine save from a free-kick – Getafe held firm and kept the score down with some better defensive work.

Barcelona didn’t mind, their work for the evening was done. Dani Alves departed to a good ovation on the day that news emerged suggesting he might extend his stay in Catalunya, Martin Montoya his replacement, and while Getafe had chances to reduce the deficit, a combination of bad luck, good recovery play and the frame of the goal kept them at bay and gifted Bravo his 20th clean sheet of the La Liga season.

I know one thing for certain: I wouldn’t want to be in Cordoba’s shoes this weekend...

Until then, Visca el Barça!

(Apologies for the late game thread and delayed review! You know we’ll be better next time round – thanks for understanding J)
