Sergi Roberto shines: Neymar & Luis Suarez score as Barcelona wins 2-0 over Getafe

In this column, Xoel Càrdenas gives you his take on FC Barcelona's 2-0 win over Getafe of Saturday night. Goals from Luis Suarez and Neymar with two lovely assists by Sergi Roberto.

MADRID — FC Barcelona had a complete match in Madrid, as El Blaugrana defeated Getafe 2-0 on Saturday night, and stayed on pace atop the La Liga table.

Munir nearly started the scoring in the opening minute, as a great play by Neymar set up the kid, but Munir's acrobatic attempt was unsuccessful. Gerard Pique continued to get booed every time he touched the ball, as the Madrid citizens obviously are not fans of Gerard's "beliefs", to say the least. Getafe had its first good chance in the 12th minute, but Getafe's Scepovic's shot missed.

Sergi Roberto returned to the pitch on Saturday, and got into the action even further when his header was easily saved in the 14th minute. In the 25th minute, a Sergio Busquets pass to Luis Suarez was wrongly called offside. The replay clearly showed Suarez was onside and the play more than likely would have ended in a Barcelona goal. Suarez with a chance missed in the 27th minute, with another Neymar play to setup the chance.

In the 37th minute, Suarez got the scoring started for Barcelona, as Neymar started the run, sent the ball toward the top of the box for Sergi Roberto, who then back-heeled it forward to Suarez and Luisito finished beautifully for the golazo. Simply one of the most beautiful Barcelona goals in recent memory.

In the second half, Neymar gave Barcelona another goal in the 58th minute, as a spectacular assist by the great Sergi Roberto found Neymar and the Brazilian slammed in the golazo! Tremendous by both Neymar and Sergi Roberto.

Andres Iniesta returned to the pitch in the second half. Jordi Alba nearly had the third Barcelona goal in the 75th minute, as once again Neymar distributed a lovely pass to a teammate, but Alba was denied by Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

FT: Getafe 0-2 FC Barcelona

Xoel's Take

Sergio Busquets had a terrific match against Getafe. Busi was everywhere to intercept Getafe passes, set-up Barca teammates, and overall just dominate in the midfield. Busi had 93/97 passing success rate. That's why he's the best in the world at the position, period. As Getafe manager Fran Escriba said after the match, "I have a weak spot for Busquets. He does everything right."

What can we say about Sergi Roberto. The kid has been one of the best and most important players for this team this season. I said jokingly on Twitter that Dani Alves should give the #6 kit number to Sergi. I'm no longer kidding. The Sergi Roberto Renaissance has been one of the most amazing storylines in all of world football this season. For too long, he was a punch line, at times. Now, no one is mocking his name anymore. Sergi Roberto is a terrific footballer who stayed patient, waited for his time to come, and is now showing the football world his talents.

Neymar was once again brilliant. The Brazilian dominated the Getafe defenders, making them looking foolish on several occasions. It's comforting to know that Barcelona can now consistently count on Neymar to take over the "Messi role" whenever Lionel is out. All the credit goes to Neymar for maturing and, naturally, growing as an overall footballer. According to Squawka Football, Neymar has been directly involved in 12 of Barcelona's last 13 goals in all comps.

Luis Suarez picked up a goal against Getafe, and with said goal, Suarez picked up goal number 300 of his career. Felicitats Luis! Neymar and Suarez have now scored Barcelona's last 14 goals in La Liga.

What we're seeing from Neymar, Suarez and the rest of FC Barcelona since Lionel Messi went out with his injury is — hopefully — the final nail in the "Messidependencia" coffin. Yes, when Messi is on the pitch, he dictates (get it?) much of how his teammates move and perform in a match. But since Leo's been out, Neymar has become the key creator of plays and Suarez has recently become more consistent. Sergi Roberto has been stellar all season long, and when Leo went out, Roberto continued/continues to shine. Ivan Rakitic is getting back to form after starting the season a bit off his game. Other players have stepped up in moments as well. While players like Dani Alves, Munir, Sandro and Gerard Pique haven't been as consistent as others — or consistent at all — the team has enough of its players who are stepping up and showing this team is now back to championship-playing level.

Leo Messi will always be the key figure at FC Barcelona until the day he retires, and we all love Leo and need him back soon. But we're now seeing the end of Messidependencia. It began to die last season, and with the maturity of Neymar and regained consistency of Luis Suarez, it's finally coming to an end.

A win, three points, a shutout, Neymar and Suarez scoring goals, and the returns of Andrés Iniesta and Sergi Roberto. Overall, a great night for FC Barcelona.

Getafe CF 0-2 FC Barcelona: Match Review

A review of Barcelona's 2-0 win over Getafe that sent them joint top of La Liga.

With Real Madrid winning earlier on Saturday, it was important for Barcelona to match Madrid's result against Getafe and stay level with their rivals. With it also being a Champions League midweek on the horizon, coach Luis Enrique would've been hoping to see the game off as quickly as possible.

The team started in the best possible manner with Sergi Roberto making space on the left side. He found Neymar who, after a quick one-two with Luis Suárez, found Munir with a cross. The ball was just behind the youngster which meant he had to go for the difficult bicycle kick but despite making good contact, the effort went wide.

There was a subdue atmosphere around the ground, especially as there was large parts of the stand empty and this seemed to translate to the players. Both sides were struggling to create clear cut chances. Getafe were defending deep and Barcelona lacked quality in the final third.  The team managed to get into Getafe's danger zones with relative ease but once there, they were slow and predictable and it ultimately came to nothing.

Neymar was dropping deeper and deeper to pick up the ball to try and create something but unfortunately this meant he wasn't available further up the field and the chances quickly died out. Suárez was struggling to have any real impact and the full backs both started high up the field meaning they weren't making the overlapping runs that would often create space.

With the full backs pushed up, this meant there was space to get at the Barça defence, in particular Dani Alves' right flank. When Getafe went forward, Alves was too slow in getting back which meant Gerard Piqué had to come across to defend. When the cross did come into the far post there was plenty of space in the Barça box and the player had time to take it down and have an effort on goal.

The first half was progressing slowly until the 35th minute when Barcelona did eventually get the opening goal. Despite lacking attacking quality, Barça seemed to flick a switch and created a great goal. Santiago Vergini gave the ball away and Neymar tricked his way down the left wing. He whipped a ball into Roberto who produced a gorgeous back heel flick which wouldn't have been out of place had Xavi done it and the ball found Suárez who placed it past the keeper at the near post to make it 1-0 to the visitors.

That was to be the only goal as Barcelona completed a less than stellar first half.

The second half started in much the same vain although the ball was in the net just after the restart. Munir, who desperately needs a goal having not scored in 27 games, controlled a chipped Sergio Busquets pass before slotting it into the bottom right corner of the goal. However, the linesman's flag had immediately gone up as soon as Munir got the ball and the goal was rightly ruled offside.

Despite the call, it wasn't long after that Barcelona did get their second. Getafe earned themselves a corner and elected to flood the six yard box in the hope of getting in Claudio Bravo's way. But quite the opposite happened as the keeper caught the ball before quickly looking to release Sergi Roberto down the right wing. The midfielder ran down the byline and spotted a signalling Neymar. Roberto looped a ball to the far post and Neymar volleyed it low and hard into the corner of the net. It was a good finish and another great assist from Roberto in this game.

After the goal, Barça fans were relived to see Andrés Iniesta making his first appearance since recovering from his injury. The captain's return to fitness eases the pressure on an already threadbare Barça midfield. Iniesta replaced Munir who had another disappointing performance and with Messi nearing a return to fitness, you expect he won't get many more chances to impress Enrique.

Barcelona were building and beginning to create chances more frequently. Neymar was looing bright, switching between the left and right wing looking to have an influence. When he picked the ball up in the centre of the field, he skilled his way through the Getafe defence before lifting the ball into the path of Jordi Alba. The full-back got caught in-between two minds and his attempted chip didn't have enough on it and was palmed away.

Sergi Roberto eventually left the field having had a great match which included setting up Barcelona's first two goals and being the main creator in midfield. After creating a few half chances, the game eventually ended 3-0 and Luis Enrique can be happy in putting an end to the long run without a clean sheet. The focus now switches to BATE on Wednesday.

Neymar finishes off Sergi Roberto's second assist vs. Getafe

Barcelona have doubled their lead in the second half against Getafe in their Liga BBVA clash. Sergi Roberto once again played provider as this time it was Neymar who finished off the youngster's pass to put Barca up 2-0. Roberto sprinted up the right flank and played a beautiful cross-field ball right to the oncoming Neymar at the far post, and the Brazilian superstar struck a perfect first time volley into the back of the net. Sergi Roberto's unbelievable backheel assist to Suarez puts Barcelona into the lead

WOWZA!

Happy Halloween! Today, Andres Iniesta is on the bench, or so we think. It's entirely possible he's actually in a Sergi Roberto costume on the pitch. The youngster's sensational backheel flick assist to Luis Suarez for Barcelona's opening goal against Getafe is something you'd see from the legend himself. Someone might have to check and make sure that's not Iniesta in a Sergi Roberto mask. Quite breathtaking stuff. Take a look for yourself with the clip of the goal below.

Barcelona vs Getafe, 2015/16 La Liga: Live stream, TV schedule, start time

The last time that Barcelona travelled to Madrid, they came from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon, with Neymar and Lionel Messi grabbing the goals in an impressive victory. Since then, Barcelona have won just one of their last games away from home, leading many to question just what has gone wrong in Catalunya? I mean, this isn't the same team that conquered all-comers last season, nor is it the one that was so strong on it's travels.

Well, that's mostly down to the absence of Lionel Messi, among other key players. Luis Suarez has been patchy, while Neymar can't do it all on his own. The defense needs to get better, which hopefully will start tonight against one of La Liga's traditionally less prolific strikeforces; Getafe rarely, if ever, have a consistent scoring option in their team -- they've probably been lacking one since Roberto Soldado left all those years ago.

La Liga: Getafe CF vs FC Barcelona: Predict the Score

In all likelihood, Barcelona will be trailing the league leaders by three points when they kick off in Madrid today against Getafe CF, as Real Madrid are heavy favourites to secure a victory in the day's early kick-off against Las Palmas. As such, the pressure will be on the Blaugrana at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, a venue at which they drew a blank last season. Following a midweek draw with CF Villanovense, another goalless draw is probably against the odds, but perhaps more probable than one would have otherwise thought.

After all, if we can't beat Villanovense, they why can we be sure that we will beat Getafe?

Of course, it's not as simple as that -- Barcelona will welcome Luis Suarez, Neymar and others back into the starting line-up, the quality of the playing surface will be better and oh yeah, our club captain, Andres Iniesta, is back and ready to inject some life into our midfield. Heck, even Sergi Roberto is back and potentially ready to slot in at right-back ahead of Dani Alves.

This will be a better version of the Blaugrana than we saw in midweek, so let's not worry about things too much. The upcoming UEFA Champions League clash with BATE Borisov shouldn't influence selection, and I've got faith in the likes of Neymar and Suarez to inspire us to victory.

What do you think will happen in Madrid tonight? Let us know by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!

La Liga: Getafe CF vs FC Barcelona: Full Match Coverage

Full coverage of Barcelona's Saturday evening La Liga clash with Getafe CF at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in Madrid

FC Barcelona will write the latest chapter in their 2015-16 campaign tomorrow when they travel to the Spanish capital for the second time this season, this time to face Getafe CF at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. The Blaugrana will enter the match after a shocking plot twist unfolded before our very eyes in midweek; the mighty Barca, drawing a blank against tiny CF Villanovense.

The Copa del Rey first-leg tie caught many by surprise, and lent further credence to the belief that Luis Enrique’s side have taken a sizeable step back in the previous four months. The all-conquering footballing maquina that made short work of all who opposed is spluttering, if not broken entirely. Or so the story goes, anyway.

What goes up must come down after all – and while some media outlets would have you believe that the footballing Gods are in cahoots over this sudden fall from grace, the reality is that Barcelona remains competitive in spite of their troubles, and are perfectly placed to gain momentum as the season progresses. Think of the past few months as an epilogue of sorts, setting the scene for all manner of future events.

The effects of the FIFA transfer ban, an injury to Lionel Messi and general struggles with squad depth, all paving the way for future story arcs: Neymar’s ascension to superstardom, the integration of Arda Turan and of course, the return of the prodigal son…we have all this to look forward to, and yet there are some who continue to focus on the negatives? Who suggest that the future is bleak, and desolate?

Far from it; as Barcelona are merely getting warmed up – and in fact, I think they might just start moving forward tomorrow, starting with Getafe in deepest, darkest Madrid…

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

In recent weeks, FC Barcelona have functioned as a collection of parts, scraping away at opposing defences with mixed results. Tomorrow, with the return of Andres Iniesta, Barcelona will regain their maestro, their conductor – their scalpel, responsible for dissecting defences with surgical precision. And this writer couldn’t be any happier if he tried; with both Messi and Iniesta out injured, the Blaugrana have suffered. One could be forgiven for even forgetting that this was a Barcelona team at all.

No Messi. No Iniesta. No Xavi.

In some respects, that serves to accentuate the new philosophy that we have welcomed in under the guidance of Luis Enrique; a more direct approach – less tiki-taka, more…mainstream? Whatever it may be, it has been apparent that this club simply cannot function on any extreme side of the scale anymore; just as Guardiola’s latter day pursuit of total possession failed, Barcelona’s brief detour into being "just like everyone else" was ill-advised, and will ultimately be short-lived.

With Iniesta back, we need to recalibrate our style, and focus back on the basics that made us so great – invincible even – at the end of last season. Retention of possession is key, but must not be confused with the concept of "control", something that has been virtually foreign to us in the past month but is of paramount importance.

On the offensive side of the ball there has routinely been little patience, little discipline and little focus. The consequences have been far-reaching and predictably dire. Defensively, we are routinely caught out of position with our hand in the proverbial cookie jar.

Out-numbered. Out-thought. Out-classed.

No longer, he says. Iniesta is a game-changer, in the sense that he provides an air of calm and a consistency that we have been so sorely lacking. While in recent fixtures, we have felt the urge – an uncontrollable desire – to simply throw numbers at the problem and to make the breakthrough, Iniesta’s presence placates that. All we need now is one well-timed run, plus one of his trademark passes and the problem is solved all the same.

More thought, more intelligence – refinement and control.

It’ll be like watching the old Barcelona again. You know, the normal Barcelona.

Claudio Bravo in goal, probably keeping a clean sheet. Gerard Pique and possibly Marc Bartra bringing a certain elegance to the heart of our defense. Dani Alves and Jordi Alba adding a different dimension to our offense from either flank with Sergio Busquets serving as the metronome at pivote.

Ivan Rakitic, the midfield workhorse liberated to find space and time in which to thrive; Iniesta working as the eyes – and brains of the operation. Luis Suarez, providing that clinical edge in front of goal; Munir, showing promise and of course, Neymar, providing that spark, leading the charge.

Maybe I’m overbilling it, or maybe, just maybe, I’ll be right…

GETAFE

Continuity is the key word for Getafe head coach, Fran Escriba, headed into this game as he knows that he can ill-afford to rock the boat, roll the dice and gamble on a new tactical innovation mere days before he takes on the reigning La Liga and European champions.

Carlos Vigaray is suspended after receiving a red card last week, but that’s probably for the best anyway; he gave away two of the three penalties in Getafe’s landslide defeat to Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Neymar would probably fancy his chances, but when was the last time that Barcelona got a favourable call from a referee in Madrid?

LAST MEETING

FC Barcelona 6-0 Getafe CF – 28th April 2015 – La Liga

Did I ever tell you how much I miss Lionel Messi? He scored twice and grabbed an assist in this one. Xavi scored and assisted for good measure too, with the other goals coming from Luis Suarez (2) and Neymar.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Bravo; Alves, Pique, Bartra, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Munir, Suarez, Neymar

Getafe (4-2-3-1): Guaita; Suarez, Alexis, Vergini, Lago; Lacen, Rodriguez; Pedro Leon, Sarabia, Victor; Scepovic

MATCH PREDICTION

One win in their last five away from home for Barcelona. That needs to change, and where better to start than in Madrid? 4-0 Barca.

La Liga News: 29 October 2015: Zidane Rubbishes Ronaldo Exit Talks, Barcelona In Ligue Un?

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta does not believe that the European champions will end up quitting La Liga for France's Ligue 1 should Catalonia gain independence. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and, ahead of regional elections there last month, La Liga president Javier Tebas warned that the Spanish league would be "nothing" without the city's football club.
Di Maria is counting the hours to his Santiago Bernabéu return. He will be the star of the show when PSG travel to Madrid next Tuesday.
Zinedine Zidane has rubbished rumours Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale could be on their way back to the Premier League. The Real Madrid coach, who led the side to Champions League glory as a player, said they were a club which bought the best players in the world and not one that sells them.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has set his sights on a move to La Liga in the future, but only when he decides the time is right to leave Borussia Dortmund. The Gabon international has been in sensational form in the Bundesliga this season with 13 goals in 10 appearances, making him the top goalscorer in the league ahead of Robert Lewandowski.
Deportivo La Coruna Coach Victor Sanchez believes Friday’s opponents Atletico Madrid may have the best defence in La Liga. Victor spoke to reporters prior to the game at Riazor and commended Diego Simeone’s team, and spoke of what Deportivo would need to offer to come away with three points.
Atletico Madrid's young side are ready to challenge for the La Liga title this season, according to manager Diego Simeone. After their title triumph in 2014, Atletico could only manage a third-place finish last term,  ending the campaign 16 points behind winners Barcelona. In a major overhaul of the squad, which included the departures of Arda Turan and Mario Mandzukic, the club have invested in youth and have now clicked into gear following a slow start.

FC Barcelona News: 29 October 2015: Barca Draw A Blank Against Villanovense, Douglas Out With Broken Foot

FC Barcelona have some work to do in the second leg of their Copa del Rey round of 32 tie with Villanovense after the plucky third tier side managed to hold them to a surprise 0-0 draw on Wednesday night. Luis Enrique opted for a very different starting line-up to the Barça team we are used to, with Douglas at right back and Masip in goal getting their first starts of the season. The promising young Cameroonian Wilfrid Kaptoum made his first team debut in midfield in partnership with Gumbau and Samper, while Adriano was fielded in an unfamiliar attacking role alongside Sandro Ramírez and Munir.
FC Barcelona's played to a scoreless draw in their visit to Villanovense in the first leg of the last 32 of the Copa del Rey. Despite the tie, starting goalkeeper Jordi Masip said that the team "was very serious. We created chances but we have to congratulate Villanovense for their game." He put a lot of value in not conceding a goal: "The most positive was not giving anything up. I think we played well defensively."
Luis Enrique used the first Copa del Rey match of the season to debut a pair of youngsters from Barça B — Wilfrid Kaptoum and Aitor Cantalapiedra. Kaptoum, a midfielder from Cameroon, played 63 minutes, and was one of the game's pleasant surprises. He was later replaced by Aitor, the Catalan forward. In seeing action on Wednesday, the pair became the eighth and ninth players since Luis Enrique's arrival to make the leap to the first team, joining Masip, Sandro, Munir, Gumbau, Samper, Halilovic and Edgar Ié, who had already made their debuts.
Barça returned to training on Thursday with so news of the loss of Douglas, who, tests have shown, fractured the scaphoid tarsal in his right foot. He is expected to be out for 8 weeks.
It was Tuesday 29 October 2002, thirteen years ago today, that Andrés Iniesta made his first team debut for FC Barcelona in a Champions League match against Bruges. And the rest, as they say, is history. The 18-year-old would go on to be one of the artifices of the greatest Barça team ever assembled, as well as being one of the finest players ever to wear the Spanish national jersey. First team captain following the retirement of his long-term colleague in midfield, Xavi Hernandez, it was Iniesta who lifted the last of many trophies that he was won over the years – the European Super Cup in Tbilisi.
The Sao Paulo star of the seventies also described how he himself encouraged his former charge Neymar Jr to join Barça. "His father asked me what the best options were" he reveals. "And I said he should go to Barça because they play a similar kind of football here to what he was used to back home. And I think he made the right choice". Two seasons later, and Ramalho is still convinced that "one day he’ll be regarded as the best player in the world. He’s being patient. He’s getting himself ready and there’s a whole structure behind him to ensure that he becomes the future leader of FC Barcelona".
Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano told a court on Thursday that he did not properly pay his taxes in Spain after moving from Liverpool. The Argentine player admitted at a Barcelona court that he failed to pay nearly 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) in taxes owed for 2011 and 2012. Mascherano, who has played for Barcelona since 2010, was accused by Spain's tax office of concealing part of what he earned in image rights during those two years.
The agent of Cristian Tello has made it clear the attacker does not want to return to Barcelona, but would prefer to stay at Porto instead. Cristian Tello's representative Jose Maria Orobitg has stressed that the attacker is not interested in a return to Barcelona once his loan spell with Porto finishes at the end of the season.
The France midfielder Paul Pogba could still join Barcelona from Juventus, according to his agent. The 22-year-old was strongly linked with the Catalan club over the summer but no deal was agreed. Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, now says there is still the possibility of the move happening, but that Juve would want €100m (£71.8m) for the player.

Xoel Cardenas: Samper, Aitor & Kaptoum impress; Munir & Sandro disappoint in Copa opener

In this column, Xoel Càrdenas gives you his take on FC Barcelona's 0-0 draw against CF Villanosense in El Blaugrana's Copa del Rey opener. Xoel talks about Munir and Sandro not displaying their first-squad status on the pitch.

VILLANUEVA DE LA SERENA — FC Barcelona opened its 2015-15 Copa del Rey campaign with a 0-0 draw over CF Villanovense (CFV) on Wednesday night.

Gerard Gumbau had the true first shot on goal in the 17th minute, as his long shot from outside the box went just left of the post. Jordi Masip made a nice save just two minutes later on a low shot from CFV's Elias. Munir had a good look at goal in the 30th minute, but the kid's shot was too strong and high. CFV had a few corner kick chances soon after, but nothing came from them. CFV nearly took the lead in the 42nd second, as Javi Sanchez's shot hit the top of the crossbar and out.

Sandro had a great shot at goal in the 63rd minute, but his shot went high and over the goalkeeper Jose Antonio Fuentes. Sandro with another shot just two minutes later, but Fuentes was there to make the save. A few chances by CFV in the 77th and 79th minute but no goals came from them. A header by Marc Bartra nearly went in, but Fuentes was there to tap the ball out.

Overall, it was a dull match, to say the least.

FT: CF Villanovense 0-0 FC Barcelona

Xoel's Take

In my opinion, the young player that stood out the most was Wilfrid Kaptoum. The 19-year-old Cameroonian showed much energy and could be a good option for the next Copa match. He did make a few mistakes in the match, but let's not make too big of deal of those. The most important part is that Kaptoum gained experience and confidence. Sergi Samper looked good as well. It is a small victory that Samper, who has deserved first-team playing time for a while now, got time on the pitch. Let's hope Lucho calls him up more (but I'm not holding my breath). Aitor — who became the eighth player to debut for FC Barcelona under Luis Enrique — did well, giving a bit of a spark to the offense in the second half.

Thomas Vermaelen had a nice match. With Javier Mascherano suspended for two matches thanks to his outburst towards an official last week, it will more than likely be Vermaelen who gets a start soon in the Barça back line. This match against CFV gave Thomas the playing time he and his legs needed to get back to game shape.

The players I'm most disappointed with are Sandro and Munir. Both of these first-team players looked like subpar B-team players against CFV.

Sandro has a lot of heart and passion, and you can see his fire on the pitch. But Sandro's finishing is not good, he makes poor decisions at times and is not making a case to stay with the club long-term. Too many times, I've wondered if it's a discipline problem, immaturity problem or an anxiety problem with Sandro. I want the kid to do well, and yes, he's had his moments, but there have been more close chances than converted chances with him. Luis Enrique will stick with him because of depth issues and the fact that the other options have been either loaned out or sold.

Munir is the more dynamic forward compared to Sandro. But against CFV, Munir wasn't dynamic and lacked any real effort. Like Sandro, Munir didn't show any merit to his first-team status. Let's hope in the second leg that we see Munir try to impose his will on the match. Sometimes, it's those things that create and lead to goal-scoring opportunities. Imposing your will in a match is something Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar know how to do; I don't know if Munir and Sandro will ever learn to do. I don't expect the two kids to become just like the golden trio, but it'd be nice to see some effort and at least try use some of the golden trio's traits, hustle and heart.

While this 0-0 draw isn't the outcome we all wanted to see, let's not panic. Barcelona will win the second leg at the Camp Nou. The best thing about this match was that it gave youngsters like Samper, Aitor and Kaptoum playing time and experience. It will help their confidence and I'm sure Lucho will look to some of them for the second leg.

Good job, kids. Força Barça!

Copa del Rey: CF Villanovense 0-0 FC Barcelona: Match Review

Recap of Barcelona "stress free" draw against Villanovense in the Copa del Rey

In what can only be described as a snooze-fest, Barcelona traveled to Villanovense, from the Segunda Division B, with a very different team, only to be blanked by a spirited home side that all things considering found it very easy to keep Barcelona off the board, leaving everything to play for in the return leg at the Camp Nou in early December.

As expected considering the opponent and all the injury problems, Luis Enrique sent out a very changed starting XI. The only part of the team even slightly resembling the first team was the defense where Douglas Pereira, Marc Bartra, Thomas Vermaelen and Jeremy Mathieu started in front of surprise starter Jordi Masip. The midfield consisted of three Barcelona B players; Sergi Samper, Gerard Gumbau and Wilfrid Kaptoum. In attack, youngsters Sandro Ramirez and Munir El Haddadi were joined by Adriano Correia.

Playing in front of a packed crowd at the Romero Cuerda stadium, which had its capacity almost tripled solely for this match, Barcelona dominated the ball. As expected against a third division team, even a severely shorthanded Barcelona team should have more than enough technical ability to control the ball for the majority of the game. But expecting a side like Villanovense, who were absolutely thrilled to get drawn with Barcelona, to roll over and allow Barcelona free reign it their defensive zone would've been silly.

Barcelona were without a shadow of a doubt the better of the two teams on the pitch, but the youngster-filled Barcelona lineup had similar problems as their more experienced teammates often have as well - sending that useful final pass to a dangerous position from where somebody could score...

Barcelona struggled with that so much that they didn't fire their first shot, albeit off target, until the 17th minute, roughly ten minutes after Villanovense's first shot of the game, which was also off target. Barcelona's first attempt came courtesy of Gumbau, but it whistled past José Fuentes' left post. Two minutes later, the hosts had a legitimately strong chance to take the lead, but Masip made the stop.

Barcelona continued to struggle on the pitch, with the midfield experiencing the most problems, leaving the three forwards often cut off from the action. Just about the only times in the first half the forwards got involved in the game was on free kicks, but even then they couldn't get any shots on goal, though Munir did get a good look in the 31st minute, but he was unable to capitalize on the scramble in the penalty area and missed the target badly.

The last minutes of the half were all Villanovense, who were far from intimidated by hosting the treble winners at their stadium. The hosts went through a strong stretch that included several corner kicks in succession, from one of which Villanovense managed to graze the crossbar.

The fact that Villanovense were fairly easily managing to get into the danger areas coupled with the fact that Barcelona couldn't hit the broad side of the barn from long range and couldn't get close under any circumstances, were forcing Lucho to make faces rarely seen on the Barcelona bench. The expressions on Lucho's face weren't getting any more pleasant in the second half as Barcelona continued to struggle while the hosts continued to threaten from corner kicks, where Masip often seemed unsure how to handle high balls.

The lack of creativity is Barcelona's attack was arguably the most concerning area of this match as even with all the youngsters in the team, the Catalans shouldn't have this many problems with Villanovense. It took Barcelona almost 20 minutes to come close to Fuentes' goal, but Sandro's shot from the edge still didn't force the keeper to make the save. The very next minute Lucho made his first substitution of the game, taking off Kaptoum and replacing him with Aitor Cantalapiedra. Moments later, Samper created the visitors' best chance of the second half, but Sandro's shot was held by Fuentes.

In all, the second half was very much like the first one, as Barcelona continued to dominate possession, but Villanovense's excellent, yet strong, tacking often quickly stopped Barça's attacks. The fact that Barcelona's passing was all too often off target didn't help Barcelona's chance creation either. There were glimpses of good play, like the pass from Samper to create Sandro's second chance of the half, but that's all they were - glimpses.

To say that either team created anything really noteworthy in the second half would be a stretch, though Bartra did manage to test the goalkeeper in the 85th minute with a strong header. It seems that Lucho will have to include a few more first team regulars in the return leg at the Camp Nou if Barcelona don't want to exit the Copa del Rey in embarrassing fashion. Now back to the La Liga.
