Real Madrid closed to within two points of the La Liga pacesetters Barcelona and Atlético Madrid after Gareth Bale helped himself to his first four-goal haul in a 10-2 demolition of nine-man Rayo Vallecano. Real bounced back in some style from last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Villarreal, with Karim Benzema netting a hat-trick and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice, but did not initially have it all their own way at the Bernabéu. They were again whistled by some disgruntled home fans after they fell 2-1 behind despite going ahead through a Danilo strike in the third minute.
Rayo Vallecano coach Paco Jemez was chastened by his team’s embarrassing defeat at the Bernabeu to Real Madrid, who spanked his side 10-2, condemning them to a Christmas in the relegation zone. "It has been a long time since I have seen anything as grotesque and shameful as today," said a fuming Jemez, who saw defender Tito sent off for a straight red card on 13 minutes when his side were 2-1 up, and then had Raul Baena also dismissed before the break.
Atletico Madrid missed the chance to go top of La Liga for Christmas as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Malaga. With Barcelona on Club World Cup duty, Diego Simeone’s side could have gone top of the table ahead of the winter break in Spain. However, they were handicapped by the dismissal of Gabi Fernandez.
Sevilla and Valencia were expected to challenge La Liga heavyweights Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid this season but it is surprise packages Celta Vigo and Villarreal who are hot on their heels. Fourth-placed Celta stayed two points behind Real, who are third, thanks to a 2-0 win at Granada on Sunday while Villarreal are a point adrift of the Galicians in fifth after they won by the same scoreline at Real Sociedad.
It's all coming full circle for Rafa Marquez. After starting his career in Atlas' youth academy, Marquez will return to the Guadalajara side two decades after he made his professional debut, the club announced Sunday.
But while Ramos understands the fans frustrations, he accused them of turning on the players when they need them the most. 'Sometimes players are free to express their feelings. He (Ronaldo) always says what he thinks,' Ramos said. 'When we needed support most from the fans we got whistles, sometimes you need a little love. 'People single you out when they think you're not giving your all. When they see you giving it all you have they don't get on your case.'
Rafa Benitez's side went 2-1 behind to the struggling side, which led to the home supporters making clear their views with boos and angry whistles cascading from the stands. In response, Ronaldo wagged a warning index finger in their direction.
