The craziness of January is finally over, but Barcelona still have a really tough schedule ahead of them. The Champions League is coming back in February and there are two giant Copa del Rey semi-final matches to play, and the first takes place on Tuesday night at Camp Nou when the Blaugrana welcome Valencia for what promises to be a REALLY fun night.

Despite losing 4-1 at home to Real Madrid over the weekend, Valencia are still the second best team in Spain behind Barça and the Bats gave the La Liga leaders a really tough time earlier this season. Their counter-attacking style is perfect to face a team like Barça, and their midfield is physical enough to trouble the Catalans’ possession game.

Hopefully Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho will show better chemistry this time and give Barça a good result at home. Valencia definitely have the firepower to get a crucial away goal, so the Barça defense will also need to be at its best. This game will be fun and also nervous, but also really fun. But also really nervous. But fun!

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-4-2): Cillessen; Roberto, Piqué, Umtiti, Alba; Vidal, Rakitic, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez

Valencia (4-4-2): Neto; Montoya, Vezo, Garay, Lato; Soler, Parejo, Kondogbia, Gayà; Mina, Rodrigo

PREDICTION

These two teams are just too good for the game not to be super close: 2-1 Barça.

Barcelona and Las Palmas agree to cancel Sergi Samper’s loan after injury

Barcelona and Las Palmas have agreed to cut short Sergi Samper’s loan deal after the midfielder suffered an awful injury that required surgery.

Samper was hurt during Las Palmas’ clash with Eibar in early January and suffered a fractured fibula and ruptured ankle ligaments.

The 23-year-old went under the knife in Barcelona and will now continue his recovery with Ernesto Valvderde’s side.

It’s still unclear exactly how long Samper will be out of action for but Las Palmas have wished him well for the future.

“UD Las Palmas would like to thank Samper for his excellent behavior and professionalism during his time at the club as well as wishing him luck, both personally and in sports.”

Source | Las Palmas

Samper managed just three appearances for Las Palmas, two in La Liga and one in the Copa del Rey and his injury is a real blow.

Hopefully he can recover quickly and get back to playing football as soon as possible.

Get well soon Sergi!

Valverde talks Busquets, Coutinho, Vidal and Deulofeu ahead of Valencia clash

Ernesto Valverde has been talking ahead of Thursday’s Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Valencia and had plenty to say about his side’s opponents.

The Barca boss also talked about some of his players and confirmed Sergio Busquets is fit after recovering from illness.

Here are the best bits...

Valverde on Valencia

“Now you’re at thie stage, you’re on the verge of the final and you want to throw everything into it

”It’s vital to put in a good performance in the first leg because they are very strong in Mestalla. It will be important not to concede. It’s an open tie and an attractive one for both teams. It will be tough for both sides.

“They are probably the best team in the league on the counter. I’m sure they will try to use that against us, as Alaves did the other day. We need to look and see where things went right. We need to be careful with counter attacks.

“They are a team that is one game away from the cup final. Any team in a semi is going to be dangerous. They will do everything they can.”

Valencia on Busquets’ fitness

“I’ve spoken to him. He’s well, him and Andres Gomes have been ill. I think Gomes’s situation is a little more delicate but Busquets is fine.”

Valverde on Coutinho

“Coutinho’s a player that does well in several positions. He can play as a playmaker, to the left like at Liverpool or to the right like for Brazil. And with both Liverpool and Brazil he has done well.

”That’s why we have signed him. He can help us in attack. He is versatile and can play in various positions.”

Valverde on Gerard Deulofeu’s exit

“These circumstances can occur, He really wanted it when he arrived.

”He has had chances to prove himself. It didn’t come out as he would have liked so we spoke to him and it was best for him to go out and enjoy more minutes.

”Especially considering that there is a World Cup and that he can be an alternative. I am happy with him on a personal level for how he has been here.”

Valverde on Aleix Vidal

“There has been a lot of speculation about him. He is not a starter, but he helps the team regularly. Three players that played in the same position have left, so it’s good that he’s staying.”

A Fan’s Perspective: Barcelona’s right-wing is in flux

An opinion on Aleix Vidal, Ousmane Dembele and the departure of Gerard Deulofeu

Ever since Ernesto Valverde took charge of Barcelona, his fluid 4-4-2 has helped several fringe players find minutes on the pitch.

The right-wing, in particular, is a position yet to be filled by a permanent name. The likes of Denis Suarez, Andre Gomes, Ivan Rakitic, Sergi Roberto, Gerard Deulofeu, Aleix Vidal and Ousmane Dembele have all tried their luck in the role with varying degrees of success. Few have done better than the rest.

While Roberto, Vidal and Dembele are probably the best choices to fill the spot, new arrival Dembele is primed to take over permanently. Despite all his flair, Dembele is yet to find his footing in the team.

Few would argue against the fact that Sergi Roberto is best suited to the heart of midfield and till a spot is vacant, he is likely to hold the right side of the defence.

Gerard Deulofeu was an option during the first half of the season but had disappeared into obscurity with every passing month. His departure will not be noticed in the slightest.

Vidal on the other hand, is a player who is performing beyond expectations in his new role. Yes, he was marketed as the solution to Barcelona’s right-back problem which was a disaster. However, he is an exceptional winger with pace and ingenuity to beat his man.

While Barcelona adjusts to Ousmane and he reciprocates in kind, Vidal can be the stop-gap we so desperately need.

If his recent performances are anything to go by, Aleix VIdal has finally found his niche in the squad and it could secure his future with the Blaugrana.

Anthony Lozano, Wilfrid Kaptoum and Rafa Mujica leave Barcelona B

It’s been a busy transfer window for Barcelona B and the team have confirmed some more departures before the close of the transfer window.

Perhaps most surprising is the news that Anthony ‘Choco’ Lozano who has agreed a move to Girona.

The striker has made 20 appearances for Barca B this season scoring four and providing three assists, but will now hope he can break into the Girona first team.

Barcelona have also confirmed that they have cancelled midfielder Wilfrid Kaptoum’s contract and he has left Camp Nou for Real Betis.

Also on the way out is Rafa Mujica who will spend the rest of the season on loan at UE Cornella in the hope of playing more regularly after recovering from injury.

Barcelona also confirmed yesterday that Sergio Gomez has left for Borussia Dortmund, although they have brought in Marcus McGuane from Arsenal.

Rumors: Barcelona still going for Griezmann, Arthur deal close plus Oriol Busquets, Vidal & Munir

Barca want Griezmann as part of a ‘super-team’

Today’s rumors begin with news from Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona remain determined to sign Antoine Griezmann in the summer as they look to build a ‘super-team.’

The club are aware their rivals, both home and in Europe, will spend big this summer and think that €100m is a great price for Griezmann.

Along with Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, Barca think Griezmann will help create another superstar side.

Barca to sign Arthur for €30m

Meanwhile, over at Sport the news is that Barcelona are finally closing in on a move for Gremio midfielder Arthur.

Arthur’s release clause is €50 million and Barcelona have already made an offer of €30 million.

However, they may have to up that offer to €36m if they are to finally land the Brazilian, who is likely to stay with Gremio until at least the end of the World Cup.

Oriol Busquets set for renewal

Oriol Busquets is set for a new Barcelona deal and the club are set to meet with the player to discuss extending his contract, so say Marca.

The midfielder’s current deal expires in June, which means Barca are vulnerable to approaches from other clubs, but fortunately the player’s preference is to stay.

Barca now need to get a move on and firm that interest up by getting Busquets to sign on the dotted line.

New deal for Munir

Another player who is set to be handed a shiny new contract is Munir, who is currently on loan at Alaves.

According to CatRadio (via Sport) Barca will hand him a new deal, even though his current contract runs until summer 2019.

Munir is having a decent season at Alaves but Barcelona think they will have more power when it comes to selling him if he has more time left on his contract.

Vidal to stay after rejecting Roma

And finally today we end with news that Barcelona’s January transfer business is done with Aleix Vidal set to stay, despite interest from Roma.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Roma renewed their interest with Edin Dzeko now expected to stay at the club after Chelsea dropped their interest in the striker.

Vidal was willing to leave but Roma are unable to match his wages and the 28-year-old is not prepared to take a pay-cut.

Deulofeu explains why he chose to leave Barcelona for Watford

Gerard Deulofeu has explained why he opted to leave Barcelona and move to Premier League side Watford.

The winger will spend the rest of the season on loan at Vicarage Road after falling out of favour under Ernesto Valverde.

Deulofeu says he did have other offers and is looking forward to getting back to playing after a spell on the sidelines at Barca.

“I chose Watford because it’s a great team of the Premier League,” he said.

“I had different offers but I thought Watford is a perfect team for me and I’m the footballer to help Watford.

“I hope in these three or four months I can help the team and play well and win games.

“I’m so excited to be here. It’s a great opportunity for me to get some minutes, to play well, play with confidence, and for me the most important thing is to help the team,” Deulofeu said.

“I’m here and I will work to play my best football.”

Source | Watford FC

Deulofeu has plenty to prove having failed to establish himself in the team after his return to the club last summer.

Watford are under new management after Javi Gracia replaced Marco Silva and are currently 10th in the Premier League table, but just four points off the bottom three.

Barcelona starlet Sergio Gomez leaves for Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed they have signed 17-year-old Sergio Gomez from Barcelona.

The teenager has signed a long-term deal with the Bundesliga side and been handed the number 34 shirt.

It’s understood Dortmund activated Gomez’s €3 million release clause, with his Barca deal set to expire in the summer.

The loss of yet another talented youngster will be a blow to Barca. Gomez played a starring role at last summer’s Under-17 World Cup in India as Spain finished runners up to England.

Gomez scored both of Spain’s goals in the 5-2 final defeat and looks to have a really promising future ahead, although unfortunately that will not be at Barca.

Barcelona Coach Ernesto Valverde is the Substitution Master

Valverde continues to change games with his bench

FC Barcelona were 1-0 down to Deportivo Alavés, and Ernesto Valverde turned to the bench quickly. He had decided to completely change his fullbacks. Off went Lucas Digne and Nélson Semedo, in came Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto. A little bit later, off went Philippe Coutinho for Paco Alcácer. And a little after that, Luis Suárez scored. And twelve minutes later, Lionel Messi scored. A 2-1 win for Barça precipitated by a change from Valverde.

It’s not the first time this season, either. Valverde has managed to turn around so many games with his tactical adaptations, that he’s developing a bit of a reputation as a substitution master.

Against Villarreal last December, the score was 0-0. Valverde introduced Paco Alcácer and later Aleix Vidal for Denis Suárez and Paulinho. Four minutes after the second substitution, Luis Suárez scored, and then 11 minutes later so did Messi. 2-0 the final scoreline.

In the 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid, Sergi Roberto was brought on when the score was 0-1 to Atléti. He ended up assisting the equalizer.

In an earlier game against Aláves, he brought on Alcácer in the 57th with the score still very tight - just 1-0 to Barcelona. In the 66th, he assisted Messi.

But perhaps no other game shows Valverde’s mastery in subs than Barça’s 2-1 win over Getafe. Geta were winning at the end of the first half, but Valverde subbed in Denis for Iniesta. And in the 52nd, Denis would score the equalizer. Then, in the 77th, Valverde brought on Paulinho for Ivan Rakitić. The Brazilian would score a brilliant winner just 7 minutes later.

Valverde’s Barcelona is marked by much stronger second halves than first halves. To an extent, you could argue it’s coincidence that substitutions are being made and Barcelona are improving, since the subs are made in the second half and Barcelona improve in the second half generally.

But we’ve seen many times Valverde’s players from the bench have a direct impact. It’s not always a goal or an assist - though it certainly is that sometimes - but players coming from the bench change the match in substantial ways.

McGuane passed a medical on Tuesday before signing his contract at Barcelona and will now link up with with B team.

The midfielder has made two substitute appearances for Arsenal this season, both in the Europa League against BATE Borisov and Red Star.

Barca B have been busy in the transfer window and have also brought in Matías Nahuel Leiva on loan from Villarreal as well as Cristian Rivera from Eibar and Martin Hongla from Granada.

VAR would have changed Barcelona v Alaves game, says Tebas

La Liga chief Javier Tebas said in an interview with reporters that VAR could have changed the Barcelona vs. Alaves match on Sunday. He also confirmed that VAR would be coming next year to the league.

Alaves were frustated after the game that a late handball appeal on Samuel Umtiti was unsuccessful, and there were also complaints about an offside before Lionel Messi’s free kick winner.

Meanwhile, Luis Suarez has said he should have been given a penalty in the first half and Tebas said VAR would have changed the game.

“Next season there will be VAR,” he said.

”We are doing our best and we will ensure it arrives on time.

”With the VAR, some moments in the Barcelona and Alaves game, for example, would’ve changed.”

Javier Tebas | Source

VAR will be a fascinating addition to La Liga, particularly as there have been so many high-profile controversial incidents in recent season.

Side note, in the same interview Tebas said that he would like Neymar to return to Spain eventually.

“I would like Neymar to return to Spanish football yes,”

Javier Tebas | Source

So there’s that, take it as you will.

Aleix Vidal’s agent plays down talk of a move to Roma

Aleix Vidal’s agent, Graziano Battistini, has said that “Barca aren’t in a rush to sell their players” with it looking increasingly likely he will stay at Camp Nou for the rest of the season.

Barca have allowed Arda Turan, Rafinha, Javier Mascherano and Gerard Deulofeu to exit this winter and Vidal has also been linked with a move away.

Both Sevilla and Roma have been speculated as possible destinations for Vidal but his agent’s latest comments suggest he’s going nowhere.

“It’s difficult to make predictions in football, Aleix Vidal is still a Barcelona player and Barça aren’t in a rush to sell their players,” he said.

“Contact between the clubs? It’s difficult to distinguish between contact and a real negotiation.

“Monchi is certainly a fan of the lad, but he’ll probably be focused on other business I don’t know about.

“It’s a situation I don’t think will take off because right now the conditions aren’t there.”

Source | Tuttomercatoweb

Time is running out in the transfer window and it looks right now that Vidal will stay, unless a club makes a late push for the 28-year-old.

Lionel Messi hints at playing for David Beckham’s new Miami MLS club

It’s always been an interesting topic of conversation discussing how Lionel Messi will spend his post-Barcelona football career. While Barcelona fans hope there is no such thing as a post-Barcelona Lionel Messi, there always remains hope for other clubs around the world as long as he’s playing.

In reality, most think Messi will return to Argentina if he is to play for any club other than Barcelona at all. Getting to play a few years at his boyhood club would be a pretty wonderful storybook ending for one of the greatest players of all time.

If there are any other options for Messi other than retiring a Barcelona player or returning to Argentina to play, the only somewhat feasible option was Messi heading to MLS to play out a couple of seasons.

That reality was given a little hint of life when Messi made a video congratulating David Beckham on his new Miami MLS club in a recent video.

“Hi David, first of all congratulations, I hope all goes well with the new project, in this new step you are taking and who knows, in a few years maybe you will give me a call,”

Lionel Messi | Source

Athletes enjoy congratulating other athletes and joke about playing with each other. Who knows if Messi would even consider it, but since it’s Lionel Messi and David Beckham, it’s at the very least interesting.

Gerard Deulofeu Completes Loan Move to Watford - Report

The Barcelona player has failed to establish himself

According to Diario SPORT, Gerard Deulofeu will leave FC Barcelona to join English side Watford on loan. He will be joining immediately and could debut against Stoke City in the English Premier League.

The loan does not include an option to buy. Deulofeu is said to prefer joining Watford as the club guarantee him a chance to become a starter. Their new coach, Javi Gracia, is thought to be a fan of the player, and the club want him to join as soon as possible.

Deulofeu had previously played in the Premiership, for Everton. He’s also no stranger to loans, having played at Everton, Sevilla, and AC Milan on loan. He had made his return to Barcelona earlier this season as the Catalans activated a buy-back clause, but he has so far failed to establish himself as a starter at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona-Alavés: The Handball Rule Still Confuses People

Here’s why even VAR won’t solve the issue

Did Samuel Umtiti have an uncalled penalty in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alavés?

Maybe, but it wasn’t given. There was also this incident, when Luis Suárez scored the equalizer. The ball scraped off Gerard Piqué’s hand.

There’s a lot of confusion about the hand ball issue. The rules state that in order for a penalty or free kick to be called, the player must intentionally play the ball using their hand.

The tricky thing is, short of mind reading, you can never tell for 100% sure whether someone was doing something intentionally or accidentally. Now of course, some cases are so egregious (Dani Carvajal obviously attempted to save a shot with his hand in the last Real Madrid-Barcelona clash, for example) you can pretty much tell they were intentional. But what about Umtiti’s or Piqué’s?

Umtiti probably didn’t mean to use his hand. But under that standard (which is, taken at face value, the standard in the rulebook) handballs should be extremely rare (only the Carvajal variety should actually be handball.) Could a defender approach every play with his arms spread, saying if the ball hits him in the hands, it was not his intention?

People have interpreted certain aspects as contributing to whether something should be called. Whether the ball was blasted quickly towards them or whether it came from a fair enough distance, whether the hands were in an “unnatural position,” whether the ball bounced off somewhere unexpected first and then hit the hand... these all play into decisions referees make about the degree to which one can call it intentional or not.

Taken these factors into consideration, Umtiti had some elements to defend himself with: the ball was hit towards him at a high speed, for one. But there were incriminating aspects, too, like the fact that his hand was raised rather high.

This logic probably absolves Piqué, the ball is hit at him from close range unexpectedly, he is protecting his face, and so on.

But these are vague and inconsistent, which confuses and frustrates people. Ultimately there is no definitive answer. Umtiti’s is a little bit “more of a handball” than Piqué’s, but should both count as handballs? Neither? Only Umtiti’s? There are opinions but no conclusions.

This is why VAR will only somewhat solve these questions. We have replay and all the time in the world, but we cannot say with certainty whether these were the wrong calls. The assistant referee will not be able to reach the correct answer everyone will agree on in a limited time.

The only way to keep sane, in the end, is to defer to the judgement to the referee, the line judges, and soon, the video assistant referee. Hopefully, with VAR we can rule that, for example, if a player was penalized but actually did not use his hand at all, no foul should be called.

But in gray areas - and there will be gray areas - we can debate, but at the end of the day, we have to respect that someone must make a judgement call and that everyone has to accept it.

Messi so good he’s already scored 20 league goals and he’s also hit the woodwork 13 times

Everyone knows how good Lionel Messi is. The man has accomplished almost anything an individual player can accomplish and does so in a wonderful orchestra of class and skill.

This season, Messi is having another amazing individual season, scoring 20 goals in La Liga so far. But what is perhaps even more amazing is that he’s had the unfortunate luck of hitting the woodwork 13 times so far this season.

That’s amazing. Had the ball gone another few centimeters in one direction, Messi may have over 30 goals in the league already.

The Argentine has been on point this season. The precision in which his shots are careening toward the goal has been amazing and should his current progress continue, he may reach a new height for nailing the crossbar.

Barcelona’s the only club I want to play for, says Pique

Gerard Pique has signed his new Barcelona contract that will keep him at the club until 2022 today and took some time out to discuss his future.

The central defender will be 35 when his contract expires and there has been talk of him finishing his career abroad, with a move to MLS having been rumored.

Pique is having none of it though as he says Barcelona is the only club he will ever play for and that he wants to finish his career at Camp Nou.

“I am very happy to celebrate my contract extension. I hope it’s not the last. I feel Barça like it was my home.

“I hope to finish my career here. I am not interested in playing for another team. It’s Barça or nothing”

When Ernesto Valverde came to Barcelona, few knew what he was capable of doing. There was a general idea that his teams could press (due to his tenure with Athletic Club) but little else was known about his tactical style.

Ernie started his time at Barcelona with a two-legged defeat to Real Madrid. It was not what Culés had in mind when they thought of Valverde. His switch to a 4-4-2 was also subject to backlash from the fans.

A few months later, and the fans are comparing Ernie to former coach Pep Guardiola. So what’s changed? Well, for starters, Ernie is incredibly calm in the face of trouble. The Basque has coaxed an incredible second-half performance from his team on numerous occasions this season. His teams may not be perfect on the go, but they adapt and take home the three points.

Even his infamous 4-4-2 has been received with applause for being capable of adapting to quick-transitions. Even players like Aleix Vidal have had a decent run with the team under him.

Ernie has used the B-team fairly regularly. When called upon, his judgement has been immaculate and more often than not, Barcelona makes the right squad selection.

He may not be the charismatic enigma that is Pep, but he brings a quiet air of assurance that few coaches have had in Barcelona’s recent past. With Ernie at the helm, there is a sense of calm even when the team is down.

Ernie has shown the astute tactical nous that fans at the Camp Nou crave. Last night’s double substitution that replaced both full-backs was another display of that ability. Valverde has endeared himself to the club and fans despite not being the first choice. That hasn’t happened by chance.

For what it’s worth, Valverde has shown that he’s a bet for the future.

Should Barcelona want a long-term coach, Ernie would be a good choice.

Valverde’s Barcelona as good as Guardiola’s - according to the stats

Barcelona’s unbeaten La Liga record is still standing, but it was placed in serious jeopardy on Sunday night against Alaves.

John Guidetti put the visitors in front and they had the better of the chances until Luis Suarez finally equalised with a little under 20 minutes to go.

A superb Lionel Messi free kick then ensured Barca would take home all three points to maintain their unbeaten record.

The win means that Valverde’s side have now equalled their best ever La Liga start - achieved under Pep Guardiola in 2009/10.

So what next for Barca? Well, in La Liga they head to Espanyol next weekend before games against Getafe and Eibar.

Valverde responds to Alaves’s handball complaints against Umtiti

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has hit back after complaints from Alaves that they should have had a late penalty in the 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou.

Samuel Umtiti blocked a shot with his hand late on, although the French defender was so close to the ball it seemed impossible for him to get out of the way.

The referee waved played on but Alaves striker John Guidetti said it was a “clear hand” after the game and called for the use of VAR after the game, according to Football Espana.

Valverde was asked about the incident after the game and felt the officials got it right.

“I see it with my team’s shirt on, however I believe the handball to be involuntary.

”I asked Umtiti but aside from cutting off his hand, I don’t know what else can be done.”

Source | Marca

The Barca boss also explained why he opted to bring on full-backs Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto at the start of the second half.

“We needed a chance at that time,” he added ”It was important to have more depth.

”We didn’t have a lot of space and the situation was complicated.”

There were quite a few questionable decisions in the game, not least Mubarak Wakaso only picking up one yellow card when he might have had at least three.

Alaves might also point to Paco Alcacer being offside before Lionel Messi’s free kick, but it’s difficult to argue that Barca didn’t deserve all three points despite being below their best.

Barcelona 2-1 Alavés, La Liga: Match Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s tight win over Alaves.

Barcelona survived the scare that was Deportivo Alaves, who like last season proved a dangerous opponent at the Camp Nou. The visitors took the lead early in the first half through John Guidetti, but despite their struggles, Barcelona fought back in the second with goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi to extend their unbeaten run in the La Liga.

After a slow start Barcelona started pickup up the pace and quickly pinned the visitors back. Barcelona’s passing was good and newcomer Philippe Coutinho showed some flashes in his first start for the new club. Barcelona’s first opportunity came in the 7th minute with Lucas Digne firing from the edge of the area, but his shot went about a foot wide.

The Catalans continued to attack, but Alaves’ lines were very tight. Still, chances were there to be taken. But warning shots were fired by the visitors in the 15th minute when Alaves went on a 2 on 1 counter attack. Semedo did all he could to make it difficult for the attackers, but Ibai Gomez was still presented with an opportunity. However, Marc-Andre ter Stegen rushed out of the net, taking away every inch of the shooting angle and making the save.

Barcelona could’ve taken the lead in the 21st minute with Luis Saurez getting on the receiving end of a Messi free kick, but his header was saved by Fernando Pacheco. Two minutes later, Alaves made Barcelona pay for more lackadaisical defending as this time Guidetti went alone on goal from inside his own half. One-on-one with ter Stegen, Guidetti slipped, but still managed to take the shot, beating the Barcelona goalkeeper short side.

Alaves would create another chance three minutes later, this time Ruben Sobrino taking the shot from a tough angle, forcing ter Stegen to make a strong save to, surprisingly, keep Alaves’ lead to a minimum. Just after the half hour mark, Barcelona excellently outplayed Alaves with some beautiful close-quarters passing and quick movement, leaving Coutinho with an excellent chance to tie the game from the edge of the area. The goalkeeper was left ball-watching, but a diving Ruben Duarte prevented the goal with a block.

Barcelona’s attacking continued, but so did Alaves’ impressive defending. The fact that on occasion Barcelona were let down by their first touch or an errant pass only helped Alaves’ efforts. The fact that Messi can’t seem to get any help from the frame of the goal also didn’t hurt the visitors. In the 43rd minute, Messi lined up for a 35-yard free kick, firing a shot seemingly destined for the near post. But a stretched out Pacheco got just enough of the ball to push the ball into the post which promptly rejected Messi’s effort. Barcelona tried one more time in added time to tie the game up before the break, but Alaves without much trouble kept Barcelona at bay.

Neither manager made any substitutions during the break. Barcelona looked to quickly level the score but Alaves’ defense continued strong. Even though the effort was there, Barcelona was clearly lacking something, and Ernesto Valverde made not one, but two changes in the 52nd minute to right the ship, replacing both full-backs. Nelson Semedo was replaced by Sergi Roberto while Jordi Alba took Digne’s place.

Barcelona looked livelier with the two first-choice full-backs on the pitch, with Alba causing some problems after just a couple minute on the pitch, setting up Messi for a shot in the 59th minute, but the Argentine’s shot was blocked. Defending the lead, Alaves showed little intent going forward and looked to steal a second or two off the clock at every possible occasion.

But even though Barcelona attacked pretty much the entire second half, scoring chances were few and far between. Looking to bring on more firepower, Valverde brought on Paco Alcacer in place of Coutinho, who made some decent plays but at times appeared unsure as to where he should play and how to link up. With Alaves opening up a bit after the one hour mark after some chances on the counter, Messi and Suarez looked to use the added space in attack, but as Messi found Suarez for a lovely chance in the 68th minute, Suarez couldn’t beat Pacheco from close range. Somehow Barcelona also didn’t score in the 70th minute when Gerard Pique found Paulinho in space after a corner kick, but from 5 yards out the Brazilian saw both of his shots get saved by Pacheco.

Two minutes later, however, Barcelona finally tied the game up. Andres Iniesta sent the cross in from the left wing and found Suarez on the far post. The Uruguayan fired a half-volley on goal that took a slight redirection off of Pique’s forearm and finally Pacheco was beaten. Barcelona’s attacking efforts continued and the hosts could’ve taken the lead in the 76th minute as a Duarte turnover left Suarez streaking on goal, but he fired over the net even though he had a wide open Alcacer waiting in the middle.

In the 84th minutes Barcelona took the lead. Alcacer won a free kick 23 yards from goal to Pacheco’s left. Everybody knew Messi was the only option to take the shot and everybody knew where he was aiming, Pacheco among them, but even then the Spaniard couldn’t prevent the goal even though he did manage to get his hand on the ball.

Alaves were now looking for the equalizer and in the 88th minute they wanted a penalty kick. Roberto’s clearance was poor and it set up Munir El Haddadi’s shot that was blocked a foot later by Samuel Umtiti’s hand, but the referee would have none of it. Barcelona could’ve doubled their advantage in added time, but Messi couldn’t bury the chance created by Alcacer. Barcelona weren’t made to pay for the missed opportunity and Barcelona fans were able to breathe easier as the final whistle blew.

It was far from a vintage Barcelona performance as the hosts struggled to get going and even though they dominated the play one would struggle to argue that the win was deserved, especially considering Alcacer was offside when he won the free kick for the winning goal. But the final whistle blew and now it’s back to the Copa del Rey for Barcelona where they will host Valencia on February 1.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez prove their class for Barcelona against Alaves

All three players reached landmarks in the win

Barcelona’s unbeaten record in La Liga had a serious wobble on Sunday night as Alaves gave Ernesto Valverde’s side a tough old test at Camp Nou.

John Guidetti put the visitors ahead and Barca huffed and puffed before finally breaking the deadlock.

New signing Philippe Coutinho started and was then taken off, and it was down to Andres Iniesta to spark Barca back into life with 72 minutes gone.

The skipper did so in some style too with a great run down the left before crossing for Suarez to finish. In doing so Iniesta made sure he is the ONLY player to have contributed a La Liga assist in the last 15 seasons.

Suarez’s goal also means he has now scored in his last eight La Liga games - and no other player in Europe’s top five leagues has managed such a run yet this season.

Barca still needed more to take home all three points and it duly arrived from the left foot of Lionel Messi as he swept home a delicious free kick. And of course, being Messi, it meant another landmark (or two) for the little genius.

It was a tough night for Barca, but when it came down to it their senior players stood up and delivered the goods and yet another three points.

Barcelona vs Alavés, La Liga: Final Score 2-1, Barça come back to win tough match

And breathe!

Barcelona maintained their unbeaten record and their 11-point lead at the top of the table in La Liga thanks to a 2-1 comeback victory over Alavés at Camp Nou. The visitors played a fantastic game and went ahead, but Barça managed to find enough goals to win another game.

FIRST HALF

Barça had a poor start to the game, passing the ball slowly and without purpose and making it easy for Alavés to settle into their defensive positioning and avoid any real chances. The visitors also had a very good counter-attacking plan and constantly forced Marc-André ter Stegen into some important interventions whenever they had a chance to break quickly.

In one of those quick counter attacks, Alavés got a shocking lead when John Guidetti was put through on goal and managed to beat Ter Stegen to put last year’s Copa del Rey finalists ahead. The goal seemed to wake up Barça, who showed a lot more urgency and had some good chances to score, but goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco made some very good stops to keep his team ahead.

At halftime, a mediocre performance from the Blaugrana had them deservedly behind. Would they react in the second half?

SECOND HALF

Barça had some real urgency in the second half and looked a lot better than they did in the first, and it really seemed like they could turn the result around. But anxiety in front of goal and poor decision-making hurt the hosts at the start of the period, but once Andrés Iniesta played a beautiful cross to Luis Suárez for the equalizing goal things changed and Barça looked set to score a winner.

And they did score a winner, thanks to a lucky decision and the best player in the world. After Paco Alcácer came back from an offside position to win a free kick at the edge of the box, Lionel Messi placed a perfect ball in the top corner to put Barça ahead. Alavés made a desperate attempt to find a late qualizer, but the Blaugrana were able to hold on to a key victory.

Barça remain 11 points ahead of Atlético Madrid with 17 matches left in the league and are still unbeaten. Despite a bad first half, this team is good.

Barcelona vs Alavés live stream: Lineups, Kickoff time, TV listings, how to watch La Liga online

The league leaders face a tough test at home, and you cannot miss it

La Liga leaders and virtual champions Barcelona will continue their march to the title on Sunday night with another home match, but this will be a tough test for the Blaugrana, who are yet to lose a game in the league this season.

Barça welcome Alavés for what has been a tricky game the last few times these two sides have faced. That includes the Copa del Rey Final of last season, which Barça ultimately won but had to work a lot harder than many predicted. Alavés are a solid defensive side with dangerous players on the counter, and they have what it takes to get a result at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho will probably start together for the very first time, and if they’re able to find good chemistry early in the game we could see a good win for Barça. It’ll be very tough and fun at the same time, and you just can’t miss it.

Valverde talks Coutinho, Pique comments and Neymar to Real Madrid ahead of Alaves clash

Ernesto Valverde has held his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Alaves and had quite a lot to say.

The Barca boss seemed to hint he would play a strong team on Sunday and also spoke about new boys Yerry Mina and Philippe Coutinho.

He was also asked about Neymar moving to Real Madrid, and doesn’t think it’s out of the question. Here are the best bits...

Valverde on team for Alaves

There could be changes to the team. We don’t think we are so far ahead in the league we can start thinking about other competitions. If we start thinking like that we will pay the price. Tomorrow we want to put out our best and most competitive team out against a team that is coming here to win the game. We need to get three points tomorrow it’s important.

Valverde talks Pique and Espanyol

A lot has been said about what Pique said and then Espanyol’s appeal. That’s all part of the rivalry. The games are always very intense at both grounds. So perhaps something seems excessive to one team, some people say the appeal from Espanyol was excessive. We all know what Espanyol did in those two games, they were a really tough rival to play against. They were still in it until the very end. It was really hard to win that cup tie. They are a local rival, so let’s not deny the rivalry.

Valverde on possibility of transfers before the window closes

The days are passing I don’t think there are likely to be many more changes. I don’t know, I can’t guarantee anything

Valverde on Yerry Mina

Yerry Mina has a chance to play tomorrow, so does everyone else. I’m not going to guarantee he will play tomorrow. He’s doing very well in training, he’s adapting to the team and waiting for me to give him a chance to play.

Valverde on Philippe Coutinho

We need to learn how he plays in our system and he needs to learn how to play with his team-mates. He’s different to any player we’ve got. Iniesta is perhaps more of a central midfielder, whereas Coutinho has maybe a better shot and plays further up.

He has a certain elegance. I think we could play him in midfield. He doesn’t need to change much to fit in. I think Coutinho and Iniesta are different types of players, but also complimentary. They could play together perfectly well. They can play in the same position, but let’s see how things develop.

Valverde on who are Barca’s biggest title rivals

We always look at who is directly behind us and that’s Atletico. We also know Valencia are having a good season, you can never discount Real Madrid. They are a team that can suddenly go and win a lot of games consecutively. They are really strong competitors who are always there at the end of the day. We don’t want to give anyone any margin to get back into the race and cut down the points difference.

Valverde on Neymar

There are players here who probably wouldn’t be if Neymar hadn’t left. The loss of someone like Neymar, you look as though you’d lose a lot up front but we’re still scoring a lot of goals. We have a structure that helps the goals keep coming. We have restructed the defence and that works right throughout the team. Perhaps if he had still been here we would have done things differently, I’m sure we would have done.

Valverde on Munir

He’s doing very well, he’s fitted in, scored goals and he’s an important part of Alaves. I hope he doesn’t score goals against us like he did last year at Valencia. He’s a player we need to be careful of, he’s very hardworking. The idea of sending him out on loan was to get him playing and he is playing which is good.

Valverde on Neymar to Real Madrid

Who knows what can happen in football. But if there’s a world where strange things can happen, it’s the football world. But that’s not something I’m worried about. I’ve enough to worry about here at Barca.

Lionel Messi discusses how Neymar departure has affected Barcelona

Lionel Messi has been talking and specifically about Neymar and how his departure has affected Barcelona.

When the Brazilian left Camp Nou in the summer many feared the worst, but Barca have gone on to have a superb season without him.

The team are clear at the top of the Liga table, yet to taste defeat, and still in contention in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Barca’s results have prompted the question of whether Barcelona have missed Neymar at all, so here’s what Messi’s made of it all.

“Neymar’s departure has changed our way of playing. We lose lots of attacking potential but it helped us in a defensive sense.

“Right now we’re very well armed in the centre of the pitch. We have more balance and that makes us defensively strong.”

Source | World Soccer (via Sport)

Neymar has been thriving on the pitch at PSG and Messi also thinks his team will be a threat in the Champions League.

“Man City are one of the strongest teams, same as PSG. They have been the strongest teams til now but the season is very long. I’d not rule out,” he added.

“Madrid because of what they have and their experience, despite that they aren’t getting the results people expected them too.

“Bayern too, are a great side who will be there at the end of hte season. But it’s true that City and PSG are the best right now.”

Barcelona are certainly a different team without Neymar, but are they a better team? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Limited Edition Barça Bobbleheads are Released

The National Bobblehead Hall or Fame and Museum have made limited edition Barça bobbleheads and sent one to Barça Blaugranes for us to have a look at.

Few players can ever claim to be good enough that they have a bobblehead designed on them but now four Barça players can. Forever Collectibles have produced four FC Barcelona licensed bobbleheads meaning these figures have a recognisable likeness to their real life counterparts.

The four players that have received the bobblehead treatment are Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Gerard Piqué. Each player is in a unique pose with Messi and Suárez’s statues recreating their goal celebrations.

These are not your average bobbleheads though. For starters, they are much bigger. Whereas your average bobblehead is about two inches tall these are roughly three times the size. The bobbleheads also come with a specially designed mount of the main stand of the Camp Nou and the bottom is labelled with the number your statue is.

It is clear a lot of hard work has gone into creating these and any über Barça fans can add bobbleheads to the growing list of Barça merchandise that they own.
