Getting to Know: Douglas

A look into Douglas' career as a football player.

Full name: Douglas Pereira dos Santos
Squad No: 16
Position: Right-back
Date of birth: 6 August 1990
Place of birth: Monte Alegre de Goiás, Brazil
Height: 1.71 m (5 ft 8 in)
Weight: 67 kg (148 lbs)

Born in Monte Alegre de Goiás, Brazil, Douglas started his footballing career at the age of twelve when he joined the youth ranks of Goiás Esporte Clube, located in the largest city in the state, Goiás, approximately 350 miles (570 kilometers) from his home. Douglas spent the next seven seasons working his way through the youth teams, before reaching the first team in 2009. He made his professional debut on 20 June 2009, but the youngster spent the first season as a backup to the experienced Vítor.

After Vítor's departure the following year, Douglas became the first choice right-back for the Esmeraldino, but his team was quickly relegated. Altogether Douglas spent three season at Goiás, the first two in the Série A, the third in the Série B, appearing in 78 games, scoring five goals, all five in his final season with the club, and assisted on another five.

In February 2012, Douglas signed a contract with the most successful club in Brazil, São Paulo. The right-back quickly claimed a place in the starting eleven. While Douglas' performances were largely mixed he was able to maintain a place in the starting lineup. Like at Goiás, Douglas spent three season with São Paulo. But this time he took part in 124 games, scored six goals and added seven assists.

In August 2014, Barcelona made a €4million offer for the São Paulo player, an offer that could increase by €1.5 million depending on Douglas' performances. Still young at the time of his transfer, especially for a defender, 24 years and 20 days old, Douglas was viewed as a future investment by the Barcelona board that would slowly be worked into the team - but that has proved to be a very slow process. He made his Barcelona debut on 25 September 2014 in La Liga against Malaga. Since his transfer to the Catalan capital, Douglas has only made five appearances, but he was able to help his team with an assist.

On the international stage Douglas has so far featured only at the U-20 level where he took part in 12 games and helped his national team reach the final stages of the South American U-20 Championship and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, winning the former.

Profile

Douglas is a right-footed right-back that is also capable of playing as the right side midfielder or a right winger. He is very capable when it comes to the attacking aspects of the game, but his game is lacking when it comes to defense, where he isn't enough positionally sound to consistently make plays. While his offense needs to be nurtured it will be his defensive development that will determine if he will be able to make it at the biggest stage.

The Kings: FC Barcelona Wins Copa Del Rey Title

Two titles down, one more to go. FC Barcelona lifted a second trophy this season, as El Blaugrana defeated Athletic Club Bilbao 3-1 in the Copa Del Rey Final at the Camp Nou on Saturday night. In this column, Xoel Càrdenas gives you his take on Barça's win and Leo's magical goal.

Two titles down, one more to go. FC Barcelona lifted a second trophy this season, as El Blaugrana defeated Athletic Club Bilbao 3-1 in the Copa Del Rey Final at the Camp Nou on Saturday night.

Barça got off to a good start, and it would have been better if the line judge didn't call a clear onside goal by Neymar offside.

Lionel Messi made it 1-0 in the 20th minute, as Leo's magic got through three Bilbao players, past another and put the ball in the back of the net. Unreal play by the greatest player of all time. Truly are no words, just watch and savor every moment.

Neymar made it 2-0 in the 37th minute, as it started with a give-and-go from Ivan Rakitic to Messi, then Raki found Luis Suárez onside who lastly and unselfishly crossed it to Neymar for the goal. Tiki-taka.

In the 56th minute, Xavi Hernández came into the game for Andrés Iniesta. Xavi got a standing ovation, as "El Maestro" played his final match at the Camp Nou.

In the 74th minute, Messi picked up the 3-0 thanks to a nice low cross by Dani Alves, and Leo put it in to get his brace. Leo's 58th goal of the season in all competitions. MSN now with a record 120 goals.

Iñaki Williams made it 1-3 in the 79th minute, as the kid had a solid game for Bilbao.

The Copa belongs to Barça!

FINAL: FC Barcelona 3-1 Athletic Club

Xoel's Take

Neymar's antics: seems cute, but is not needed

Late in the match, Neymar tried to do one of his trick plays that make YouTube highlights. It didn't work, and all of Athletic Club was furious with him. It wasn't needed.

Some of you my say I'm being too harsh for one play, but it was an example of how Neymar still needs to grow up as a footballer. As I said long ago, Neymar can be a brilliant idiot sometimes. He has the talent to be the next best footballer in the world post-Messi, but he's still immature at times. He's young and I understand, but let's hope these small antics stop soon. It wasn't needed and Athletic Club knew they were beaten. Don't need to throw salt in the wound.

Luis Enrique after the match:

Lucho also said it's important to not humiliate the opponent.

Keep it classy like Leo, Neymar, and just focus on winning, not showboating. It may be the norm in Brazil, but when you're up 3-1 with less than five minutes to go in a Cup final, it's really not needed.

Xavi's last match at the Camp Nou

It's a bittersweet match, as Xavi lifted the Copa Del Rey trophy alongside Iniesta, but knowing that it will be the last time we see Xavi play at the Camp Nou is still tough to digest.

Xavi, we love you and you will be missed at the Camp Nou. We know you'll be back one day, perhaps as Barça's manager.

Messi's goal: sin palabras (no words/speechless)

There truly are no words to describe Lionel Messi's first goal of the night against Athletic Club Bilbao.

It reminded me of a Michael Jordan-like play—driving down the court, passing defenders and ending it with a slam-dunk. Former NFL player Barry Sanders comes to mind as well: the way Barry used to zigzag and make defenders miss the tackle to get to the end zone.

Like Jordan and Sanders were in their day, Messi is nearly unstoppable, if not, completely unstoppable. Defenders can try to contain him and you may get lucky and slow him down a bit. But as far as stopping him: nearly impossible.

I can't help but think — as I watch Leo's goal again — that future generations will not be able to enjoy witnessing D10S. I don't have any children, but whenever I see Messi make magical plays and goals, I wish I did have a child so we could share those magical Messi moments together. YouTube will have Messi's highlights for generations to come, but let's be honest: YouTube doesn't do Lionel Andrés Messi justice.

Last season was a frustrating one for Messi. No titles and Messi couldn't lead his team to wins in the 2014 Copa Del Rey Final and the last La Liga match. This season, Messi showed up in all of Barcelona's big games and the titles keep on coming.

M E S S I

Xoel's Final Word

The Copa Del Rey was a one-sided affair, as FC Barcelona rolled past Athletic Club Bilbao 3-1 at the Camp Nou on Saturday night. It was the Leo Messi show once again, but the entire team played well in their final match at the Camp Nou of the season.

FC Barcelona: The Kings of Spain.

Liga: Done

Copa: Done

Champions League: ...

A treble is near.

Now more than ever: Força Barça!

Barcelona Win The Copa del Rey; Messi Wins Football

FC Barcelona picked up their second trophy of the season on Saturday evening, overwhelming and outplaying Athletic Bilbao en route to an emphatic 3-1 victory in the Copa del Rey final. Even before the match had gotten underway, it was clear that we were in for a special night at the Camp Nou; 99,000 Catalan and Basque supporters had packed into the stands creating an electric, if somewhat uncomfortable atmosphere for King Felipe VI in his first Copa final.

After a surreal and ill-advised rendition of the Spanish national anthem, the two teams set about creating a spectacle of their own and Barça didn’t disappoint, earning their win courtesy of some spectacular all-round play. Oh, and goals from Lionel Messi and Neymar – they were pretty important too.

For a more detailed recap of tonight’s match, check out our Match Review and the rest of our coverage in our Copa del Rey final Story Stream; read on to find out what we learned from Barça’s victory.

There can be no debate, Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer to have ever graced the game

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the subject, but full disclosure: if you think that someone was or is better than Lionel Messi, you are wrong and that’s all there is to it.

Football used to be a sport that was played by athletes, mere mortals who in some ways were similar to you or me; then along came this baby-faced kid from Rosario, a plucky little Argentine forward with the sheepish smile of an angel and talent of equally heavenly proportions. For Messi, football is more than just a game, more than just a job – it’s an art form and tonight we were treated to one of his finest works yet.

In every sense of the word, this was a total performance from Leo; his first goal defied belief and transcends description. It was a masterpiece, plain and simple and even now, an hour or more later, I’m still shaking my head in disbelief.

Neymar is amazing, and should never have to change

With the game drawing to a close, Neymar drew the ire of the Athletic fans and players with an audacious piece of skill: a rainbow flick that left young full-back, Unai Bustinza looking rather foolish. It capped off a sensational night for the Brazilian forward, who had previously scored his first goal in a competitive final for the club; he was just out there having fun, entertaining the Culés watching in the stands and all across the globe.

Yet, for some reason, there are some pundits, players and fans who suggest that Neymar should cut this "showboating" aspect out of his game.

Apparently, players like Neymar shouldn’t be allowed to use their talents...to express themselves and to have fun. Just because Neymar is flicking the ball over someone’s head, why is that any different to a Messi nutmeg? Both are pieces of skills designed to beat an opponent, both equally as valid as the other. Haters gonna hate, I guess.

Could this be the best Barça ever?

From start to finish, FC Barcelona were dominant tonight, rarely allowing Athletic Bilbao even a moment to settle on the ball, let alone muster much offensive pressure of their own. Sure, the "hosts" had a few chances over the course of the 90 minutes, mainly as a result of some inspired play from the talented Inaki Williams, but really, there was only ever going to be one winner tonight.

The additions of Ivan Rakitić and Luis Suarez have helped us improve markedly, but the key figure in all of this is Luis Enrique. He has been a breath of fresh air, revamping our faltering philosophy and micromanaging the squad to perfection.

He attracted criticism for his decision-making earlier in the season, but while his choice to bench Messi and Neymar at the Anoeta in January for instance may have been contentious, it has paid dividends at the business end of this campaign. Now, just 90 minutes separate the Blaugrana from an unprecedented second treble...it’d be a tough ask to surpass Guardiola’s Barça, but you know what? This team is coming awful close.

As in most big games since the first game of the New Year, Luis Enrique turned to his so called "Gala XI". In La Liga those lineups included Claudio Bravo, but because this is a cup competition, Marc-Andre ter Stegen took his place in between the uprights. In front of him were the goofy-looking Dani Alves (take a look at his haircut, you'll see what I'm talking about), Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba. In midfield Sergio Busquets played behind Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitić, and in attack Barcelona's deadly trio of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar was reunited after a two game absence.

Ernesto Valverde included a surprise in his starting eleven, at right-back, where Unai Bustinza, a 23-year old youngster who only appeared in three games this season, replaced the suspended Oscar De Marcos. The rest of the back four was formed by Aymeric Laporte, Xabier Etxeita and Mikel Balenziaga, who played front of Athletic's Copa goalkeeper, Iago Herrerín. Mikel San José, Beñat Etxebarria, Andoni Iraola and Mikel Rico took their place in the middle of the pitch, while Williams joined Aritz Aduriz in attack, but Aduriz played closest to ter Stegen's goal.

As expected, the teams were greeted by an exceptionally loud Camp Nou that got even louder when the anthem was being played. One couldn't actually even hear the anthem through all the whistling. The Spanish football federation surely will not be happy and fines could be handed out, but only one outcome is expected when playing the Spanish anthem to Catalan and Basque fans.

The hosts, Athletic, started the match from the midfield circle and immediately started to push high up the pitch, whether they had the ball or not. This too was expected as the Basque-side is known to play very attacking football, and when in defense they press the opposing ball carrier deep in the opponent's half. Athletic had some success early in the game with that tactic as Barcelona struggled to carry the ball across that halfway line. Athletic came very close to scoring the opener in the 10th minute when ter Stegen tried to dribble past Williams after not the best of first touches, but very nearly turned the ball over.

Barely the young German escaped punishment, but as soon as he managed to get past the Athletic forward Barcelona were on the attack. With the added directness in Barcelona's play this season, Barcelona were quick to Herrerin's goal when an Athletic player or two were left trailing the play. And after just a couple of passes, including a stunning cross from Messi, Neymar found the back of the net with a great finish, but the whistle blew and the goal was ruled out for offside. Replay showed that Neymar and Laporte appeared to be in line.

Barcelona might not have gotten a goal from that play, but it signaled a change in play on the pitch. Barcelona couldn't quite get their game going early, but from the 10th minute on Athletic could do little to stop Barcelona from doing whatever they wanted. In the 12th minute Rakitić nicely found Suarez, who wasted no time to take the shot, but Harrerin made a strong right leg save to deny the Uruguayan.

Barcelona continued to buzz around Athletic's penalty area, but the Catalans couldn't connect with the all-important final pass. So, in the 20th minute, Messi decided there was no need for the final pass if he does everything himself. Receiving the ball on the right wing, Messi was quickly surrounded by three players, Rico, Beñat and Balenziaga, but Messi calmly pushed the ball past them and squeezed through to win acres of space. Now in the penalty area, he skipped past Laporte before powering the ball inside of the near post and just out of reach of Herrerin to put Barcelona in the lead. You can't give a goal like that justice with words.

Barcelona continued to dominate on the pitch and could've scored another four goals before the half-hour mark had it not been for the Basque goalkeeper. First, in the 26th minute, Messi played Suarez through and the Uruguay international sent a picture perfect low cross to the wide open Neymar, but from in close Neymar couldn't beat Herrerin. Herrerin would make another great save the very next minute, with Pique heading Messi's long free kick on.

In the 28th minute, Alves brilliantly found Neymar in the penalty area with a 30 yard pass. Neymar did very well to control the difficult ball, but waited too long to find an open teammate in the middle before missing the goal altogether with the shot. Two minutes later, Messi played Alba through with an over the top pass, and Alba sent a very dangerous ball to the middle, but not Neymar nor Suarez were able to get in position to tap the ball home.

Football has often taught us that if you don't take your chance, the opponent will make you pay, and with the amount of misses during that stretch that could've easily become reality once again. But Barcelona were able to add to their lead in the 36th minute with one of the best team goals of the season. Rakitić and Messi played a one-two on the right side before the Croatian played a lovely through ball to Suarez. Suarez quickly looked to the other side and seeing Neymar wide open on the far side he wasted no time and supplied another perfect ball to his teammate who made no mistake this time, calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net. With the goal, the trio of Messi, Neymar and Suarez became the highest scoring trio in history with 119 goals, surpassing former Real Madrid trident of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain.

Barcelona remained the better of the two teams for the remainder of the half, but Athletic were able to get close to halving Barcelona's lead in the 41st minute. Alba was not careful on the left side and turned the ball over to Iraola who quickly supplied a pass to the middle where Williams powered a shot on goal, but only managed to graze the crossbar. Barça would take the last shot of the half though, from a direct Messi free kick, but Herrerin was once again in good position to make the save. Carlos Velasco Carballo wasted no time and whistled for halftime quickly after the 45 minute were up.

The second half started in a similar fashion in which the first started, with Athletic playing very competitive football, but this time Barcelona didn't have as many problems with the high pressure as they had in the opening minutes of the game. With Athletic now forced to play more attacking football, Barcelona looked to create their chances on the counter attack, but the center-half duo of Laporte and Etxeita coped with danger very well. Meanwhile, Athletic had their best stretch of the match around the 55 minute mark when Barcelona lacked some conviction in defense to clear the ball, but ter Stegen was able to deal with everything sent into his air space.

Surprisingly, Barcelona were the first team to make a substitution as Lucho replaced Iniesta with Xavi in the 55th minute. Enrique has not made it a habit of making changes this early in the game. In the next minute, a lucky bounce off of Laporte created a chance for Suarez, but out of nowhere dove Etxeita to block Suarez's shot.

Valverde made his first substitution in the 58th minute, taking off natural-right-back-turned-right-winger-for-this-game, Iraola, and replaced him with Markel Susaeta, who is a much bigger threat in attack. The change also brought in some tactical maneuvering as Athletic now played in a much more familiar 4-3-3 formation.

In the first half, after the early pressure, Athletic quickly faded, but in the second 45 minutes the "hosts" remained much more competitive, but they were unable to break through Barcelona's organized defensive ranks. In fact, Barcelona continuously looked more likely to score next, but their attacks didn't result in shots on target as often as the Catalans would've liked. Over and over again Neymar, Suarez and Messi brilliantly combined in transition, but the end product was lacking. Barcelona didn't get their next good look on goal until the 66th minute when Neymar went on a long solo run, but from a great position to take the shot Neymar almost hit the corner flag.

With Xavi now dictating play and with time on their side Barcelona didn't shy away from long attacks when they were facing a well-positioned defense. A brilliant example of that started in the 72nd minute and came to fruition in the 74th. Barcelona didn't lose possession of the ball for that period and patiently waited for an opening. Eventually the opening came and the play was over when Messi tapped a lovely Alves cross into the back of the net.

Immediately after the goal Valverde made two substitutions, taking off Riko and Beñat, and replaced them with Ander Iturraspe and Ibai Gomez. Three minutes later, Enrique countered with a double substitution of his own. Alba and Suarez made way and were replaced by Jeremy Mathieu and Pedro.

The changes brought new life to Athletic, especially Ibai who after barely two minute on the pitch found Williams with an accurate cross that the youngster headed just inside the post. It's difficult to imagine ter Stegen being able to make that save, but Busquets should've done better to prevent the smaller forward from getting the header on goal. Ibai continued to create things around Barcelona's penalty area, but apart from one shot straight at ter Stegen, the Basques couldn't create much more.

The excellent game that saw Barcelona dominate for large stages and Athletic leave their hearts on the pitch - even after they were 3-0 down - was marred in the end by some unnecessary shenanigans. Everything started when Neymar tried a back-heel flip over Bustinza which the Basques took exception to, deeming in showboat-ish and over the top. But that is type of player Neymar is and ganging up on the player, trying to beat him up on the pitch is not necessary.

But those antics aside, the game almost came to a fairytale ending as Xavi came within inches of scoring on his Camp Nou goodbye. Neymar won a free kick on the left side after he was once more hacked down and it was only fair that Xavi stepped up to take it. And he took it brilliantly, curling it over the wall, but he was denied by the outside part of the post. As emotions settled, the four minutes of added time became a mere formality and Barcelona were able to celebrate their second title of the season.

Only one more game left now, the Champions League Final on Saturday.

Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao, Live Stream: Time, TV Schedule and How to Watch Copa del Rey Online

One down, two to go? FC Barcelona have their sights set on a famous treble this season and will be aiming to move one step closer to achieving that ultimate goal tonight by securing Copa del Rey glory against Athletic Bilbao. The Blaugrana enter the match as heavy favourites to lift the trophy, although it's worth mentioning that there's no such thing as an easy match against Athletic Bilbao. In 2009 and 2012, Barça may have overwhelmed Los Leones but they were always given a test and it's testament to Pep Guardiola's managerial ability -- plus the ability of the players -- that we were able to overcome these challenges and win.

In 2009, Gaizka Toquero actually gave Athletic the lead at the Mestalla after just 8 minutes, but Barça fought back and demonstrated their quality to run away 4-1 winners courtesy of goals from Yaya Toure, Lionel Messi, Bojan Krkic and Xavi Hernandez. In 2012, Pep Guardiola's final match in charge of FC Barcelona, the Blaugrana were at their sensational best as a brace from Pedro Rodriguez either side of a goal from Lionel Messi was enough to blow Athletic away in the opening half-hour.

Will a similar fate await Athletic Bilbao tonight, or will they be able to break their curse and taste Copa del Rey glory for the first time in over 30 years? Only time will tell -- see below for all the details on how to watch tonight's big game.

Barcelona Squad Named for Copa del Rey Final

It's matchday! Barcelona's road to the Treble stops today at a very familiar site, as the Blaugrana play at Camp Nou for the Copa del Rey title against Athletic Bilbao. While this will be a little different environment (they'll have to use the visitors locker room, the crowd will be at least 50-50), it still is Camp Nou, and Barça will feel like playing at home.

With the full squad healthy and available, coach Luis Enrique decided to pick every member of the 23-man roster for tonight's game, as he usually does in big matches. The big question is the status of Luis Suárez. While the Uruguayan hasn't officially been medically cleared to play, Enrique said at his press conference that the striker is "fine" physically, and that we might see him featured today.

A few hours after the game, Lucho will make the final cut and select 18 players to form the definitive squad, and only then we can really find out if Suárez is appearing. For now, here's the full squad list for tonight:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Claudio Bravo, 25. Jordi Masip

Defenders: 2. Martín Montoya, 3. Gerard Piqué, 14. Javier Mascherano, 15. Marc Bartra, 16. Douglas Pereira, 18. Jordi Alba, 21. Adriano Correia, 22. Dani Alves, 23. Thomas Vermaelen, 24. Jérémy Mathieu

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 6. Xavi Hernández, 8. Andrés Iniesta, 12. Rafinha Alcântara, 20. Sergi Roberto

Forwards: 7. Pedro Rodríguez, 9. Luis Suárez, 10. Lionel Messi, 11. Neymar Jr.

Projected Starting Lineup (4-3-3):

Stegen

Alves-Piqué-Mascherano-Alba

Rakitic-Busquets-Iniesta

Messi-Suárez-Neymar

Projected substitutes and players cut:

Bench: Bravo; Mathieu, Bartra, Adriano, Xavi, Rafinha, Pedro

Players cut: Masip, Montoya, Douglas, Vermaelen, Roberto

The match starts at 21:30 CET, and you can join us then to comment the match.

VAMOS POR LA COPA!

Copa del Rey Athletic Bilbao Barcelona things to know - ESPN FC
This is the Camp Nou, sure. But it is not their Camp Nou, not exactly. Instead of driving into the underground car park at the stadium, like they do most weeks, Barcelona's players will meet at the training ground and go by bus from there. And when they arrive, they will head to the other dressing room, because Athletic are the older club and the older club get the home dressing room. The pictures, prayers and paraphernalia in the Barcelona dressing room will not be theirs this time.

The two teams have won the competition more times than anyone else in Spanish football and therefore have long historical links with the domestic Cup.

Luis Enrique recognises the magic of the Cup | FC Barcelona
With Athletic Bilbao their opponents, Barça will be aiming for a 27th victory in the competition and the coach made it clear that both he and the squad were not lacking in motivation. Iniesta and Busquets size up Spanish Cup Final | FC Barcelona
There are no favourites in a final, but that has not stopped both FC Barcelona and its fans from dreaming of the second title of the season. Athletic Club, however, "will make things very difficult and will demand of us maximum effort," warned Andrés Iniesta, who appeared Friday alongside Sergio Busquets in the pre-Final press conference. "They won’t hand us the ball and in a final anything can happen, so we can’t underestimate Athletic," added Busquets.

For Athletic coach Valverde it is a 'unique opportunity' | FC Barcelona
"For us it is a unique opportunity." That is how Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde defined the Spanish Cup final between his team and Barça that will be played on Saturday at Camp Nou. On the subject of playing on blaugrana territory, the Basque coach was clear: "I am of no doubt that it is one of the most difficult challenges facing Athletic Club in its history."

Copa del Rey: FC Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao: Predict the Score

A chance to predict the score of tonight's Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao

The penultimate match of the 2014/15 campaign is upon us today as FC Barcelona prepare to host Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, aiming to add a second title to their haul under head coach, Luis Enrique. Technically, the Blaugrana enter this match as the away side and Athletic Bilbao are expected to have a numerical advantage in terms of the travelling support; but the Camp Nou backdrop is sure to work to Barça's favour. The size of the pitch, the general familiarity of the surroundings; Barcelona are under no illusions about how tough this final is going to be and will be thankful for every small advantage they can take.

That being said, this match is clearly going to be decided by the players on the field and the two managers on the touchline; Luis Enrique has turned Barcelona into an unstoppable winning machine and with Luis Suarez back from injury, he will be confident of his side's chances. However, Ernesto Valverde is an astute tactician and is more than capable of setting up this motivated Athletic Bilbao side to frustrate and even defeat the Blaugrana.

While for FC Barcelona, the Copa del Rey final probably trails in significance compared to next weekend's UEFA Champions League showdown with Juventus FC, this represents the biggest match of Athletic's season. Heck, this is one of their biggest matches of the millennium to date -- they will be anxious to secure Copa del Rey glory for the first time in over 30 years and to avenge two of their previous final defeats to Barça in 2009 and 2012.

Will they be successful, or can Barcelona move one step closer to that unprecedented treble? Predict the score of tonight's match by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!

Copa del Rey Final: Athletic Bilbao vs FC Barcelona: Full Match Coverage

Full coverage of the Copa del Rey Final between Athletic Bilbao and FC Barcelona

The two most successful clubs in Copa del Rey history, FC Barcelona (26 titles) and Athletic Biblao (23 titles) will once again battle it out for the Spanish Cup. The two sides last met in the Copa del Rey on May 25 2012, when they also faced off in the Final, with Barcelona coming out victorious by a score of 3-0. Coincidentally, that was the last Copa trophy Barcelona won. Athletic's last Cup win came in 1984 when in a close 1-0 final they edged out, wouldn't you know it, Barcelona. Since then the Basques reached the final three times, twice losing to Barcelona and once to Atletico Madrid.

According to experts (and non-experts) the favorite to win the trophy, and complete the domestic double, is clear - Barcelona. As they shouldn't, Barcelona aren't taken the game lightly and preparations were in full swing the entire week so the team should be ready and motivated to secure the second title in the quest for an unprecedented second club treble.

Athletic didn't take a page out of Bayern Munich's book of pregame smack talk and decided to embrace the role of the underdog. Striker Aritz Aduriz even went on to say that this Barcelona is one of the best teams in history. He continued that Athletic's biggest strength is team spirit. Athletic are a team that can't really look back at the 2014-15 season with a whole lot of pride. They finished the season a full 15 points less than in the last campaign, in which they took part in the UEFA Champions League, but stumbled to seventh in the standings this season, and the Copa del Rey title would take some of the sting out of a disappointing campaign.

The game will be played at the Camp Nou, with Barcelona being the away team. The decision to play the Final in  Barcelona's home stadium surprised many, but because the Santiago Bernabeu was made unavailable and the remaining big stadiums in Spain already had events already planed on May 30 or were deemed unfeasible by the federation only two options remained: the gorgeous (Nuevo) San Mamés or the enormous Camp Nou. Because of its size the two clubs agreed that the venue should be Camp Nou. Because Athletic are the older team they were named the home team.

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

With only two games left in the season, both Finals, it is widely expected that Luis Enrique will field the same eleven in both cup-deciders, especially now that Luis Suarez has three full training sessions behind him, after a nagging hamstring injury forced him out of the last two La Liga games of the season.

In goal Barcelona will turn to their Copa del Rey goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has been beaten four times in the seven games he featured in in the Copa. In two games he had given up one goal and two goals in one. Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba, a foursome that has established itself as Lucho's "big game" back-line, should play in front of ter Stegen, though Jeremy Mathieu could also be used from the first minute though a cameo later in the game, if Enrique decides to close down space and bring in some extra height, is more likely.

The midfield trio should consist of Sergio Busquets in defensive midfield, with Ivan Rakitić and Andres Iniesta playing in front of him. It would be a big surprise if Xavi or Rafinha would challenge Rakitić or Iniesta for a start, but both have value from the bench and could be used in various situations depending on how the game goes. Xavi should come on in the second half for one last hurrah at the Camp Nou. Sergi Roberto will struggle to make the match-squad.

Just about the only question leading up to the Final was whether Suarez will be fit enough to start. Signs were ominous as Saurez practiced separately from the team on Monday and reports surfaced that he was considered doubtful for the Final. But after a day off on Tuesday Suarez trained with his teammates and has done so in all sessions the team held since then.Today Lucho confirmed that Suarez will be available to play tomorrow. As expected, he remained tight-lipped over if the Uruguayan will start or stay on the bench, but my money is on that he'll play from the first minute. Joining him in the starting eleven will be the "other two" of the deadly trio, Lionel Messi and Neymar. Pedro will be ready to come off the bench in what could also be his last game at the Camp Nou.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

While Barcelona didn't have many injury worries in the days leading up to the Final, Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde didn't have such luck, but he too had nearly all of his players available. Winger Iker Minuain has been long absent with a torn ACL and will not return for Athletic's last game of the season. Though the biggest loss for Valverde will come due to a suspension as the extremely useful and versatile Oscar De Marcos will be forced to watch the game from the stands due to the accumulation of yellow cards.

Iago Herrerin, Athletic's cup goalkeeper is expected to start in goal but apart from Aritz Aduriz starting in attack nothing is really set in stone. The reliable Aymeric Laporte will form one half of their center-back pairing, but if his partner will be Xabi Etxeita or Mikel San Jose remains to be seen. Both of them could feature at the same time actually, but in this case San Jose will play in midfield. Mikel Balenziaga and Andoni Iraola are expected to start at full back, but Valverde could surprise and start Jon Aurtenetxe.

Things get even more chaotic in midfield where Ander Iturraspe, Beñat Etxebarria, Mikel Rico, Markel Susaeta, Unai Lopez, Iñaki Williams, Ibai Gomez and Ager Agetxe could all start. Williams is a good bet to play on the left wing especially because of the speed he brings to the table and he could be, next to Aduriz, the biggest threat to Barcelona's goal from open play. If Valverde decides to go after Barcelona Susaeta will start on the right wing, but if takes the conservative approach we could see all of Beñat, Iturraspe, Rico and San Jose in some form in defensive and attacking midfield. Late in the season Agetxe has emerged for the Basque side, but it would be a surprise to see him from the opening whistle. Gomez will also probably used as a impact substitution.

FORM GUIDE

Barcelona: WWWLWD

Athletic: WDDDWW

LAST MEETING

Athletic Bilbao 2-5 FC Barcelona - 8th February 2015 - La Liga

Led by the attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, Barcelona for the first time won at the New San Mamés - in empathic fashion. Each member of the record breaking attacking trio scored a goal, with Messi assiting on goals scored by his line-mates. Pedro added a late goal to complete the five goal night. Athletic had three goalscorers, however, Oscar De Marcos scored into his own net. Mikel Rico and Aritz Aduriz found the back of the net for the home side to keep the score respectable.

LIKELY LINE-UPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): ter Stegen; Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Alba; Busquets, Iniesta, Rakitić; Messi, Suarez, Neymar

Athletic (4-2-3-1): Herrerin; Iraola, Laporte, Etxeita, Balenziaga; San Jose, Iturraspe; Susaeta, Rico, Williams; Aduriz

MATCH PREDICTION

Athletic still have a lot to prove this season, both to themselves and to Barcelona (considering they lost both La Liga games), but a scenario in which they will be able to contain the firepower Barcelona bring to the table is difficult to imagine. My prediction is therefore that Barcelona will complete the domestic double with a 1-3 "away" win at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona's Road to The Copa del Rey Final Against Athletic Bilbao

We take a look at how Barcelona got to the final

The Blaugrana are ready to face Athletic Club in the final. Luis Suarez is said to be near or at full fitness and the team is ready to fight for the cup - yes, even Vermaelen is fit.

Here's a look back at how Barça got this far.

Round of 32

Barcelona entered the competition along with all other Primera clubs in the Round of 32. The opponent was SD Huesca, a third tier club. Barcelona won the away match easily, 4-0, with goals from Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta, Pedro, and Rafinha.

In the return leg, Barça were in full party mode, winning 8-1 to make the aggregate 12-1. Pedro scored a hat trick, and Iniesta, Sergi Roberto, Adriano, Adama Traore, and Sandro Ramirez all were on the board too. Carlos David got a late consolation goal for Huesca.

Notably, that was Adama's first goal for the senior team.

Round of 16

Barcelona faced another Primera club in the next round: Elche. However, the Valencian team did not present much of a problem, either. Barcelona won the first match 5-0 with goals from Neymar (2x), Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Jordi Alba.

The return leg was plain sailing, too. Barcelona recorded a 4-0 victory with goals from Jeremy Mathieu, Roberto, Pedro, and Adriano.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Real Madrid had fallen to Atletico Madrid...

Quarter-finals

A much sterner test for the Blaugrana awaited as they faced Atleti. The first leg was a taut affair, and Atleti nearly got away from Camp Nou with a 0-0 draw. Sergio Busquets was fouled in the box 5 minutes from time, however, giving Messi an opportunity from the spot. Messi's initial shot was saved, but he slotted in the rebound to give Barcelona an important result, 1-0.

The return leg was brilliant. Fernando Torres did his thing, fooling Javier Mascherano and scoring in about 40 seconds to put the sides level on aggregate. But Barcelona responded with a blistering counter attack. Messi receiving the ball behind the halfway line, nutmegging a player, scooping it to Suarez, who sprung Neymar free. The Brazillian didn't miss and put Barcelona back on top, 2-1 on aggregate.

Atletico were given a generous penalty for a foul Javier Mascherano seemed to have committed outside the box. Even at 2-1 down in the game, the Blaugrana lead on away goals, but they would not be satisfied. First, Miranda would fluff a clearance into his own net to make it 2-2 in the match and 3-2 in the tie.

Then, again Messi would be the architect, this time finding a flying Jordi Alba, who would cross to Neymar. Neymar would slip past the keeper and tap in the final score, which would make it 4-2 on aggregate.

Semifinals

Barcelona's fine form would continue into the semis, first registering a 3-1 win over Villarreal at the Camp Nou. Suarez would rob a ball high up the pitch and tee up Messi to open the scoring, though Trigueros would equalize at 1-1 with a long range effort that Marc Andre Ter Stegen would bundle into the net.

Again Barcelona responded to an opposition goal, Iniesta combining over and over with Neymar until el Ilusionista drifted a shot past Villarreal's keeper to make it 2-1. Gerard Pique would add another, this time by meeting a corner kick and placing it wonderfully to make it 3-1.

In the second leg, Messi would work a brilliant assist to Neymar to put the aggregate score at 4-1. Ex Barcelona player Jonathan Dos Santos would get some measure of revenge, turning in a cross past Ter Stegen to make it 4-2, but any hope for a comeback was dashed as Pina was sent off for a very harsh two-footed lunge on Neymar.

Suarez would further Villarreal's pain, bypassing keeper Sergio Asenjo and smashing the ball into the net to make it 5-2. Neymar would complete the rout, this time scoring with his head from close range to make it 6-2.
