La Liga: FC Barcelona 2-2 Deportivo La Coruña: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's disappointing draw against Deportivo.

It's difficult to judge Bravo in this one as he really didn't do anything wrong the entire game yet still conceded two goals late in the game. He faced four shots, only making two saves, though one of which, on Jonathan Rodriguez, was excellent. The two shots Bravo didn't stop he really didn't have any chance of stopping as he was let down by his defense.

Probably the only defender that can't actaully be blamed for any of the goals, but that doesn't mean he didn't make his fair share of mistakes defensively, it's just that his didn't result in goals. In attack he was always open for a pass and he even sent a few useful passes to his teammates but ultimately his contributions failed to bring a positive result.

Gerard Pique

Pass Accuracy: 88%

Interceptions: 4

Aerial Duels Won: 1
Turnovers: 1

Bostjan says: 5.5

Is Pique spending too much time on twitter lately? Probably not but it's certain that his head often wasn't in the game as he made a few plays that made you wonder where he was going. Positionally arguably one of his worst games of the season as he too often strayed out of position and like Mascherano Pique too could've done better on both Deportivo goals.

Javier Mascherano
4.6
Minutes played: 90

Passes: 29
Pass Accuracy: 93%

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 6.0

Mascherano has taken a lot of flak for his performance against Deportivo but in my opinion he rarely put a foot wrong, even though he could've done better on both plays that led to goals. But if your center back partner often strays out of position and the "left-back" is nowhere to be found it's easy to blame the guy that was actually there when it happened.

Jordi Alba
6.1
Minutes played: 76
Touches: 78
Passes: 68
Pass Accuracy: 91%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 3
Clearances: 0
Key Passes: 1
Turnovers: 0

Bostjan says: 6.5

Throughout the game Alba was one of the hardest working Barcelona players, always running up and down the left flank, even though he was late tracking back on a couple of plays. In spite of few mistakes he brought some stability defensively that was sorely missed after he was subbed off just early enough for Deportivo to turn the score around. Alba was very active in attack, but a few poor choices with the ball led to the fact that most of the chances he was involved in went begging.

Sergio Busquets
5.2
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 77
Passes: 66
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 2
Interceptions: 4

Turnovers: 2
Aerial Duels Won: 3
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 1

Sam says: 6.5

When Barça were on top, Busquets was controlling the midfield through good passes and good defensive positing which allowed him to make five interceptions. Passing wise, he was slightly less accurate than usual at 85%. For the goals, he couldn’t do much about Deportivo’s first goal but has to take some of the blame for the second goal as he was too slow getting back.

Ivan Rakitić
7.3
Minutes played: 71
Touches: 98
Passes: 83
Pass Accuracy: 94%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Turnovers: 2
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 1
Tackles: 3

Sam says: 8.0

One of Rakitić’s best performances of the season and he scored the goal to give Barça a two goal cushion. Picking up the ball from Messi, he scored a great long shot and set Barça to what looked like a easy win. He maintained a 94% pass accuracy and made over 80 passes whilst also putting in a solid defensive display of three tackles and one interception. Was substituted before the two goal collapse.

Andres Iniesta
6.9
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 114
Passes: 102
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/0
Fouls Won: 3
Turnovers: 1
Successful Dribbles: 4
Key Passes: 3
Tackles: 1

Sam says: 7.0

Was a good attacking presence at the start of the game, linking well with Messi and was unlucky not to score. His precise passing was creating chances for Barça and he completed the most passes of anyone on the field. Seemed to lose a foothold in the game when Deportivo were on top and was there for less influential on the play.

Messi did get his beautiful free kick that ended as a goal and he also assisted the second goal by Rakitic. However, he was obviously conserving a lot of energy this match; he still hasn’t been back from injury for very long and is visibly not yet back in top form. Neymar’s absence was another hindrance on Messi’s magic against Depor. Messi may not be making history at the moment, but no one will have to wait long before his brilliance is back for good.
Luis Suarez
6.4
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 62

Fouls Won: 3
Successful Dribbles: 2

Suarez did not have the greatest of matches. Early in the second half, he managed to get the ball in the net, but it was declared offside. Overall, Suarez unfortunately did not have a particularly significant contribution to the match. Although his performance was not the best, hopefully it means that he will bounce back stronger next time.

Sandro Ramirez
5.2
Minutes played: 67
Touches: 22

Successful Dribbles: 0
Key Passes: 1

Neymar was out of the match because of injury, and Sandro was chosen by Lucho to be his substitute. Sandro didn’t contribute too much to the match; he was hardly ever passed to. He effectively was not on the pitch, though this was not necessarily his own fault; a player without the ball is not going to score a goal. Unsurprisingly, he was subbed off for Munir without doing too much.

Munir El Haddadi
4.2
Minutes played: 23
Touches: 6
Passes: 3
Pass Accuracy: 100%
Tackles: 2

Kevin says: 6.0

Replaced Sandro with 23 minutes left on the clock and again failed to make his mark in an important league game. Had a late chance to secure the points but Deportivo recovered well to block his shot at point blank range. Leaves me wishing we could get Cristian Tello back as an alternate, no idea why I'm throwing that out there but I still reckon he's better than Munir or Sandro.

Sergi Roberto
5.1
Minutes played: 19
Touches: 13
Passes: 10
Pass Accuracy: 80%
Tackles: 1

Kevin says: 6.0

Great to see him back playing after a brief spell out with injury. Came on in place of Rocketic with 19 minutes left to play. Barcelona just didn't impress in the final quarter and Roberto's performance reflected that, he didn't contribute an awful lot but was no worse than anyone else really.

Jeremy Mathieu
3.0
Minutes played: 14
Touches: 9
Passes: 7
Pass Accuracy: 86%
Turnovers: 1

Kevin says: 5.0

There was no reason to take Alba off for Mathieu with 14 minutes to play and Barça under the cosh. The player was thrown straight into the action and when Piqué allowed himself be dragged out of position, it left room for Bergantiños to race past the stationary Frenchman and equalize. Not a positive performance from Jeremy.

The Team 5.4
Passes: 708
Pass Accuracy: 88%
Shots/Shots on Target: 19/12
Tackles: 13
Aerial Battles Won: 50%
Fouls Won/Committed: 11/4

Sonia says: 6.5

The team did not have the most tragic of matches, but it wasn’t one to be praised either. The first half was okay; most players  were fine, and Messi got a goal in with a lovely free kick. The left wing was especially useless: Sandro hardly got the ball and Alba is not the best at crossing. The second half was equally lackluster in terms of Barca’s performance. Though Rakitic grabbed a second goal, Deportivo also got two goals in. Overall, Barcelona could stand to do better in future matches.

Luis Enrique
5.2

Kevin says: 6.0

The manager is going to have to stress ruthlessness in front of goal now as his team were left to rue missed chances for the third consecutive fixture. Barça were cutthroat in these games last year and always made opponents pay. His team are controlling the majority of games but have begun to fall victim to lapses in concentration and a lack of intensity which has resulted in shipping stupid goals. Let's hope that this is not down to complacency. Running the clock back a year or so, someone like Piqué was only starting to feature in consecutive games again at this point having been benched early in the temporada. Flash forward to now and we see stupid tweets or silly comments about rival players that draw negative attention to himself and the team. One only hopes that this is not a microcosm of the players lack of focus, or Enrique will have a serious problem on his hands. I may well be being overly dramatic here but his players are switching off in periods of games where previously they had been watertight. This needs to change. Fast.

MOTM - Lionel Messi

Bostjan says: Messi

With Deportivo's tactics few players were able to have any success, but Messi was one of the few who managed to have a good game, deservedly winning the Man of the Match award. Propelled by his first La Liga goal of the season Rakitić finished in second with 19%. Finishing in a distant third with 5% of the votes was Iniesta.
