Valverde: We always planned to play Messi against Sevilla

Ernesto Valverde has been talking about Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla and said the plan was always to play Lionel Messi.

The Argentine started on the bench after missing Argentina’s friendlies during the international break with a hamstring tweak.

However, he arrived in the second half with Barcelona 2-0 down and helped inspire a dramatic comeback as Barcelona secured a 2-2 draw with two late goals.

“It’s true that Messi has an injury niggle, however I had always planned for him to play some part,” he said.

”He has been absent and needed to play. Every time he touches the ball he’s decisive.

”With and without Messi the team is different.”

It was a far from impressive performance from Barcelona and they will be hoping Messi and Sergio Busquets are fit to start Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Roma.

Messi finds another list to top against Sevilla

Lionel Messi already tops the goalscoring and assists charts in La Liga but he found yet another list to take charge of against Sevilla.

The brilliant Argentine did not even start the match but came on and ensured Barcelona got a point they scarely deserved with a late, late equaliser.

Messi struck from outside the box with just a minute of normal time remaining to rescue a point and maintain Barcelona’s unbeaten record in La Liga.

And no-one else can match his record from goals outside the box this season.

The result means that Barcelona need to avoid defeat against Leganes next weekend to equal a La Liga record, which they can then break if they remain unbeaten against Valencia.

Of course in between those two games Barcelona have a couple of Champions League clashes with Roma to negotiate starting on Wednesday night at the Camp Nou.

Sevilla 2-2 Barcelona, La Liga: Match Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s improbable comeback against Sevilla.

Barcelona were able to extend their unbeaten run to 37 games after a one-minute double-salvo late in the game to negate Sevilla’s two goal lead. The hosts dominated for large stretches of the game, taking the lead through Franco Vazquez in the first half before extending it early in the second after Luis Muriel buried a rebound. Barcelona’s streak was in serious danger, but late goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi secured a point for the Catalans.

With Messi relegated to bench duty due to a small injury and Sergio Busquets missing another game after a knock picked up before the international break, Ernesto Valverde was forced to make changes to his starting eleven. The defense went unchanged and Marc-Andre ter Stegen also recovered in time to start. Paulinho, Ivan Rakitić and Andres Iniesta started in midfield while Ousmane Dembele and Coutinho played wide. Suarez returned from his yellow card suspension to slot into his usual position.

Sevilla started the match brightly, testing Barcelona’s defense from the opening minute, but Samuel Umtiti and company handled the early threats very well. While the hosts looked to pin Barcelona back, it would be the visitors who would fire the first shot, with Suarez seeing his low try saved after a lovely run down the left wing by Coutinho.

The hosts continued to attack but with little success. The Catalans meanwhile looked dangerous on the counter attack, with their next scoring chance coming in the 9th minute. Dembele found Jordi Alba with a lovely pass on the left wing before the latter squared the ball into the middle to Suarez. The Uruguayan wasted little time and left-footed a shot but was let down by his aim.

Sevilla, however, continued to threaten and they were getting closer to ter Stegen. Barcelona’s defense was constantly under pressure, but due to some excellent blocks, especially from Sergi Roberto, ter Stegen went largely untested. In the 16th minute, Muriel had a chance from in close after a poorly cleared Gerard Pique corner kick but the Colombian missed the target.

Barcelona struggled with the high press, but the Catalans still managed to create scoring opportunities at times. Moments after Muriel’s chance Coutinho fired from distance, but right at Sergio Rico. Two minutes later Dembele tried to create something with his speed down the right wing, but Coutinho just couldn’t get on the receiving end of his low cross. From the ensuing corner kick Sevilla threatened on the counter attack, but Joaquín Correa’s header barely missed the target.

Sevilla’s attacking efforts continued as Barcelona were struggling to create much without the best player in the world. While there were moments of individual brilliance, most notably from Dembele and Coutinho, the Catalans couldn’t do much with the ball inside the hosts’ third. Still, Barcelona were dangerous on occasion as showcased by Dembele’s shot in the 32nd minute and the almost header from Umtiti moments later.

However, Sevilla were the better team and it could be viewed as a surprise that only one of their shots went on goal. That changed in the 37th minute - just seconds after Coutinho missed an easy interception that would’ve surely resulted in a dangerous chance for Barcelona. Instead, Sevilla’s attack continued and Correa showcased his playmaking abilities. After combining with Sergio Escudero, Correa found Vazquez six yards from goal in the middle of a five-man Barcelona zone, however, none of them was within five feet of the Italian. Vazquez was able to get just enough on the ball to get it past ter Stegen for the lead.

In the last minutes of the half Barcelona found more space in attack, even creating an excellent scoring opportunity in the 44th minute. The cross came in from the left side, and Pique, who remained forward after an earlier free kick, was left with a golden opportunity to tie the game. But seemingly unable to decide to go for a low(-ish) header or a high kick, Pique’s effort was poor and the ball trickled wide of the post. With no added time Sevilla went into the break up by one.

Vincenzo Montella, the home-side manager, made the only substitution during the break, with Miguel Layun replacing Gabriel Mercado. Barcelona were looking to improve on a sub-par first half, but Sevilla would have none of it, doubling their lead just five minutes after the restart. Correa was once again in the thick of it, setting up a shot for Escudero that was well saved. The rebound, however, fell right to Muriel who fired on goal. The slightest of deflections off of Umtiti meant that ter Stegen couldn’t get enough of the ball to direct it around the post, caroming into the net off the post.

Five minutes later Sevilla had the match-ball, as Jesus Navas went alone on ter Stegen. The Spaniard made a mess of it though, and ter Stegen did well to prevent a shot. Navas would still manage to get a shot off later in the play, but ter Stegen’s intervention allowed Pique to return and block the shot on the line. The rebound would once again find a Sevilla player, Vazquez, but his shot just missed the near post.

With the streak in severe danger, Valverde brought on Messi in place of Dembele. Messi’s magic was on display quickly as Barcelona suddenly started to click. In the 60th minute, Barcelona were seemingly on the verge of halving the deficit after a lovely doorstep pass from Coutinho. But just before Suarez could tap the ball in, Simon Kjær, who had another crucial block on Coutinho earlier in the half, cleared the ball away.

But Barcelona were attacking – and leaving acres of space behind but despite allowing several excellent chances on odd-man rushes Barcelona were still hanging on. But while the Catalans were attacking, chances were few and far between. The next one didn’t come until the 71st minute when Coutinho sent another very useful ball into the area to where Suarez was once again waiting for the tap in. However, once again, Kjær made a brilliant interception.

In the 77th minute, Paulinho was substituted off the pitch and replaced by Denis Suarez. Even with Messi on the pitch, Barcelona weren’t playing at their usually high standards and Sevilla found it all too easy to hold on to the ball. Four minutes later Valverde made his last personnel change as Paco Alcacer replaced Iniesta.

In the 87th minute, Denis sent a fabulous cross from the left wing right onto the head of Rakitić. Rakitić headed the ball on goal and with the smallest of tips Rico managed to tip the ball to the post – Barcelona’s second post of the match after Suarez’s tough angle shot earlier in the half.

But Barcelona continued to press forward and they were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 88th minute. The corner kick came in from the right side and after a deflection found Suarez on the back post where he, with an acrobatic finish, put Barcelona back in the game. Not even a full minute later the game was tied at two. Coutinho sent a lovely ball from the left wing to the center, about 25 yards from goal. There, Messi ran onto in, firing first time, beating Rico to save Barcelona from their first league defeat of the season.

Both sides looked to score the late winning goal, but neither would get a real chance to do so in just two minutes of added time. Somehow, Barcelona escaped the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium with a point and the streak intact. Despite the positive result, Barcelona will have to step it up on Wednesday against Roma in the Champions League.

Sevilla 2-2 Barça: HOW???

SERIOUSLY, HOW?????????????????

Barcelona suffered their first La Liga loss of the season in very bad fashion, playing their worst game of the campaign and losing 2-0 to a Sevilla side that could have scored a lot more. Without Lionel Messi for the entire first half, the Blaugrana failed to show any creativity and deservedly dropped points to a Sevilla team that looked really good for the entire 90 minutes.

Except Barça didn’t lose, because Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez happened. They scored two goals in less than 50 seconds to give Barça the most improbable comeback of the season. Incredible. Just incredbile.

FIRST HALF

Barça had somewhat of an encouraging start to the game, moving the ball well and having the front three constantly look for each other. But the encouraging start was just a start, and Sevilla quickly took over as the better team. They defended well, and when they had the ball they created a lot of very good chances on the counter. They were also dangerous on set pieces, and there were quite a few headers that went just wide.

Sevilla never stopped attacking, and they deservedly got a lead when Joaquín Correa made a sensational move on the left wing and found Franco Vázquez for an easy tap-in on the six-yard box. Barça had their best chance just before the end of the half with Gerard Piqué somehow missing the mark just two yards away from goal.

At halftime, a very bad performance had Barça down a goal. Would Lionel Messi make an impact if called up from the bench?

SECOND HALF

Instead of making improvements, Barça made another defensive error that led to a goal for Luis Muriel and a 2-0 lead for Sevilla. The Blaugrana looked like a team that just couldn’t go to another level and were destined to lose on the night, but Ernesto Valverde still tried to give his team a chance by bringing Messi on.

It’s not a coincidence that Barça looked a much better side as soon as the best player in the world came on, and the team started to find some really good chances. Sevilla took advantage of the space Barça left behind and began to create, and waste, opportunity after opportunity on the counter. They could regret missing so many chances, but the clock was ticking for Barça.

Even though they improved after Messi came on, Barça never really looked like scoring and Sevilla still looked in a strong position to get three points. As much as Messi, Coutinho and Jordi Alba tried in the final minutes, the league leaders just could not find any offense and left the pitch without scoring.

Except they did score. Twice. In one minute. First Luis Suárez from one yard, then Lionel Messi from the edge of the box. Somehow, someway, Barça did not lose. Wow.

Sevilla: Rico; Mercado (Layún), Kjaer, Lenglet, Escudero; N’Zonzi, Banega; Navas (Nolito), Vázquez, Correa (Pizarro); Muriel

Goals: Vázquez (36’), Muriel (50’)

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Umtiti, Alba; Paulinho (Denis), Rakitic, Iniesta (Alcácer); Dembélé (Messi), Suárez, Coutinho

Marc-André ter Stegen: Reported Record Incorrect

Mundo Deportivo has got this wrong

Marc-André ter Stegen is just 49 minutes away from breaking his personal record of not conceding while playing for Barcelona, says Mundo Deportivo. Only, they’re wrong. He’s not.

Let’s look at the numbers:

He last conceded a goal against Las Palmas in the 48th minute, and since then, he’s kept clean sheets against Atlético Madrid, Málaga, Athletic Bilbao, and Chelsea, for a total of 402 minutes. Good so far.

But MD is wrong after that, here’s my translation:

Ter Stegen’s longest streak since he arrived at Camp Nou in the summer of 2014 was also this same season. It was at the start, since he conceded Real Madrid’s second goal in the second leg of the Spanish Supercup. Betis, Alavés, Espanyol in the Liga, and Juventus in the UEFA Champions League did not [sic] beat him. It was Getafe in the 39th minute of the fifth round of the league when he achieved it in the 39th minute [sic]. In total, 450 minutes.

The writing errors marked with [sic] are not mine.

Anyway, although it’s true that Ter Stegen was not beaten in 450 minutes in that time period, what’s not true is that that is Ter Stegen’s best mark. It’s actually 564, and it happened in 2016.

It started with the last 2 minutes of a 2-0 loss to Atlético Madrid. Then, he came on as a sub against Betis to play 2 minutes. After that came clean sheets against Espanyol, Granada, then Sevilla in the Copa final (which was 120 minutes), then the next season’s second league match against Athletic, then one more in the Champions League against Celtic, and finally, 80 minutes in, conceding in the league against Leganés. That all adds up to 564 minutes, much more than the current streak.

Here it is in table form:

One difference between this streak and their purported record is in this streak, Barcelona played matches without Ter Stegen in between the matches he played. For example, he played rounds 2 and 4 of the league, but not rounds 1 and 3. However, from his perspective, it is an uninterrupted run of games for Barcelona. Also, they’re still counting their streak despite the fact that it was interrupted by an international break, so it’s not even as if all the games were consecutive period.

In any case, personal unbeaten streaks, in my opinion, remain on hold / “alive” even when you’re not playing. They resume once you go back in. If you count it differently, you should specify.

FC Barcelona, AC Milan, and Bayern Munich Set to Battle Arsenal for Max Meyer

The Schalke 04 midfielder has got many teams interested

Max Meyer is a hot property and several big teams are in for him, according to rumors. Today, French outlet Le10Sport has said that Arsène Wenger wants the German to replace Jack Wilshere next season at Arsenal, but he’ll face competition from FC Barcelona, AC Milan, and Bayern Munich.

The Schalke 04 midfielder is said to have turned down offers to renew with his club and he could leave for free this summer.

Is Le10Sport to be trusted on the matter of linking Meyer with Barcelona? Well, Sport Bild said in February that Meyer does interest the Catalans. However, Francesc Aguilar writing for Mundo Deportivo said that Barça said “no, thank you” to Meyer’s agents just a few weeks ago. Aguilar says Barcelona do not want to sign another midfielder after getting Arthur Melo, since they want to keep a lane open for Carles Aleñá to join up from the B team.

Valverde talks Messi and Busquets fitness ahead of Sevilla clash

Ernesto Valverde has been talking to the press ahead of tomorrow’s game against Sevilla and unsurprisingly a certain Lionel Messi was the focus of many questions.

The Barca boss also talked about Sergio Busquets and Sevilla - here are the best bits:

Valverde on Sevilla

It is a key game. It is a very difficult stadium and a win would be very favourable to our aim of winning the title. We want to pick up the three points tomorrow, it’s an attractive match and a victory would give us a boost.

Valverde on Messi

We are taking care of Messi, because he has a small problem and we have to avoid making it worse. We have to see how he is after today’s training session.

Valverde on Messi’s morale after Argentina’s heavy defeat to Spain

He seems relaxed, we’ve talked about how things have gone. everybody obviously likes to win, we’re not going to fool anyone and everyone who works in this area is used to criticism but he’s fine.

Valverde on Busquets

Hopefully, he will be available to play against Roma.

Valverde on injuries

The physical side of things you have to think about because you have to replace the injured player but the most important thing is mentality. This month we have options in all three competitions. We need to have the energy to compete for everything and what we don’t want is to have physical problems that hurt the team.

Valverde on Yerry Mina

He could replace Lucas [Digne] in the squad, he’s training really well and we’ve very happy with him.

Rumors: Umtiti, Upamenco, Griezmann and Abel Ruiz

Umtiti wants his wages tripled

Today’s rumors start with Sport who bring us bad news with regards Samuel Umtiti and his shiny new Barcelona contract.

Apparently the defender has rejected an offer from Barcelona because he wants his wages tripled, as he is earning “less than half what the majority of his team-mates do.”

Thing is Barcelona have a real problem with that due to their current wage bill, although they do sign off by saying the club will make a “huge effort” to keep him at the club.

Upamenco, Lenglet, Kherer & Diop are alternatives

Fortunately Sport have also come up with a whole host of alternatives if Umtiti does decide his future lies elsewhere.

They reckon that Dayot Upamecano, Schalke’s Thilo Kehrer and Sevilla’s Clement Lenglet are all options.

But wait there’s one more because Sport also claim that Barcelona have been in touch with Toulouse defender Issa Diop to see if he fancies a move if Umtiti does one.

Atletico want to increase Griezmann’s release clause

Over at Mundo Deportivo the talk is of Antoine Griezmann and his infamous release clause which is believed to drop to €100m this summer.

Atletico know that Barcelona are not the only interested party and that Manchester United and PSG also want the Frenchman.

Atleti will therefore try to get him to see out his contract, but are also interested in getting him to renew with an improved release clause of either €200m or even €300m.

Griezmann has helped the club out in the past, when he stayed during their transfer embargo, and there’s a feeling he might be willing to help them out again.

Abel Ruiz set to sign Barcelona renewal

And finally today we end with some rather good news as RAC1 are reporting that Abel Ruiz is set to sign a contract extension with Barcelona.

The club have reached an agreement with the 18-year-old and are set to make it official. There could even be an announcement as early as next week.

Lionel Messi Will Be in the Squad for Sevilla Clash - Report

It’s not yet known how much he would play

Reports coming out of the FC Barcelona camp urge calm from supporters, even as Lionel Messi missed both of the international break fixtures due to pain in his left leg. The good news is he has completed a training session and looked in good enough condition. However, there are conflicting reports about whether he will play against Sevilla.

Today, Diario SPORT is saying Messi will travel to Sevilla and be in the squad, though they say it’s not clear how long he will play. Messi could be on the bench and only come on at the end, for example.

The medical staff is said to be prioritizing having him fully fit for the crucial junctures left this season. Barcelona do hold a healthy 11 point lead in La Liga, so a match even against one of the better teams in the league is not as high priority with the UEFA Champions League clash against AS Roma looing.

Are Barca in the same boat as Argentina with Messi?

Both teams struggle in the absence of the GOAT

There’s been plenty of speculation surrounding Barcelona’s upcoming fixture against Sevilla as a number of stars are currently nursing injuries or knocks received during the international break.

One name that bothers me more than others on the list is Lionel Messi.

Every Barcelona fan is currently making line-ups in their head hoping to find the perfect combination that will beat Sevilla.

Argentina had an incredible defeat at the hands of Spain, which wouldn’t have happened with Messi in the line-up.

Barcelona are also in that same boat. I cannot remember the last time we defeated a big team this season without his help and the fact that he could be unavailable against Sevilla is a difficult situation to be in.

With the business end of the season kicking into gear, it is important for Messi to be fit and firing which likely means that Valverde will not make the mistake of risking his best player.

Can Barcelona cope without the Argentine? We all saw what happened to the Albiceleste without Messi and it’s not unimaginable that Barcelona will have to go through the same fate.

Hopefully, that’s not the case.

Barcelona told Roma starlet Cengiz Under is not for sale

Barcelona have been warned off Roma starlet Cengiz Under by club president James Pallotta.

Sporting director Monchi has previously revealed that Barcelona were interested in the 20-year-old and have been in touch with his representative.

However, Pallotta is not at all happy about rumours surrounding Under, and goalkeeper Alisson, and says both stars are under long-term contracts.

“There’s a frustration on my part that people go ‘Oh, Roma’s a supermarket,’” he said.

“We’re not trying to just sell players. We’ve tied Under down on a five-year contract, and the situation’s similar with Alisson.

”I was a fan of his right from day one and I’m glad he’s finally showing how good he is, because he’s been incredible. I think players like [Patrik] Shick are also going to be very useful in the future.

”Monchi has had to face many problems due to financial fair play and there’s still a bit of work to do, but we’ve identified many ways in which we can improve the team in the coming five years.”

Source | Sirius XM

Under has six goals for Roma this season and Barcelona may get to see for themselves exactly what he can offer when the two sides meet in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Barca facing crucial run starting with Sevilla

Messi back in Barca training ahead of Sevilla

Lionel Messi returned to Barcelona training on Thursday as the club step up their preparations for Saturday’s La Liga clash with Sevilla.

The Barca star missed both of Argentina’s international friendlies due to a hamstring tweak meaning there’s a bit of a question mark over his fitness currently.

However, Barcelona have confirmed he is back in training although it’s still far from certain if he will play on Saturday. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is also pictured which is pretty good news too.

Barcelona face Roma in the Champions League four days after the Sevilla clash and there must be a temptation not to risk him so he’s fit enough to face Eusebio Di Francesco’s side.

Kluivert Jr has now admitted the same and plans to arrive in Barcelona some time between now and 2025 apparently.

“But Barcelona is my dream club. Within seven years, I would like to be at Barcelona. But before that I would like to play in England as well. I really like that competition [the Premier League] and I would like to play there.”

The 18-year-old has seven goals and four assists for Ajax this term and made his Netherlands debut during his country’s 3-0 win over Portugal on Tuesday.

Ramos: “Argentina Are Inferior Without Messi”

The Spaniard recognized his rival’s absence made Argentina worse

Sergio Ramos has recognized that Lionel Messi’s absence made a difference as Spain thrashed Argentina 6-1. Ramos, who captains Spain, said that though “It’s always nice to beat national teams with so many names and with players of great quality,” Argentina are simply not the same without their captain, who is enjoying a great season with Barcelona.

“Leo is a top, top player, a unique player, and Argentina are inferior without him,” the Real Madrid player explained. “Argentina, with Messi, is more powerful.”

“I remember that Argentina scored four against us in River Plate’s stadium,” Ramos noted. “Now we have a positive memory of playing them.”

And while he praised Spain’s great performance, he maintained that the result yesterday was “distorted” by a flurry of late goals.

Barca confirm Digne out for three weeks

The FIFA virus strikes again

Barcelona have confirmed that left-back Lucas Digne is out for three weeks after he picked up an injury during international duty with France.

The defender was forced off during Friday’s 3-2 defeat to Colombia and has a thigh problem which will sideline him for a little while.

Although Digne is only back-up to Jordi Alba the injury comes at a bad time with a packed fixture schedule and injuries starting to bite.

Barca also have injury concerns over key stars Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Marc-Andre ter Stegen ahead of tough games against Sevilla and Roma.

The club will be preying Jordi Alba stays fit and he saw plenty of action with Spain, playing 79 minutes against Argentina and all 90 minutes against Germany.

Dembélé and Pogba Racially Abused in Russia

An ominous sign for the upcoming World Cup

France’s sport minister has called for an investigation into racist abuse directed at French players during France’s match against Russia. The two main subjects of the abuse seem to have been Manchester United’s Paul Pogba and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembélé. Reports say the Russian fans made “monkey noises” when the players were taking corners or had the ball.

“Racism has no place on the football pitch,” said French Minister for Sport Laura Flessel via Twitter. “We have to act in unison at a European and international level to put an end to these inadmissible actions.”

It remains to be seen how FIFA or UEFA will react to the complaints. This is an ominous sign with the FIFA World Cup set to take place this summer in Russia.

Valverde calm over Messi fitness

The boss thinks it is not a big problem

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has given his verdict on Lionel Messi’s fitness concerns.

The Barca star missed both of Argentina’s friendlies during the international break with a hamstring niggle.

It’s unclear at the moment if Messi will be fit to face Sevilla with Barcelona on Saturday but Valverde seems pretty unconcerned.

“I’m calm about Messi’s injury. Tomorrow we will see how he feels,” he said.

“Messi finished the last game with Athletic well, it is true that he had a little trouble, but it was nothing important. I still do not know what we are going to do, we think and hope it is not important.

“We are not going to worry before time, when the doctors see him we will decide the steps to follow, but we think it is not important”.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is also expected to have tests tomorrow after picking up a knee injury with Germany and Valverde may will have decisions to make over his team, particularly with Roma up in the Champions League in midweek.

Diego Costa spot on with his Lionel Messi comments

Diego Costa’s a pretty controversial character but the Atletico Madrid striker got it spot on after Spain’s thrashing of Argentina on Wednesday.

Costa scored the opener as Julen Lopetegui’s side inflicted a heavy defeat on Argentina who were once again without Lionel Messi due to injury.

There’s a pretty tired argument that Messi has to win the World Cup to be considered the greatest, but Costa got it spot on after the game when he was asked about the Barca star.

“In Argentina, they criticize Messi a lot but look at what happened today, you can see how it is when Messi isn’t there,” he said.

“Without Messi, it’s another thing. You don’t criticize someone like Messi.

“What people should do is give thanks for him. When Messi is not playing, Argentina transform into another team. Our style is different if we face Messi.”

Source | Mundo Albiceleste

Argentina look in a bit of a mess if Wednesday’s showing is anything to go by and the performance will only increase the pressure on Messi ahead of the World Cup.

Ronaldinho: I Knew Lionel Messi Was a Better Player than Me

The Brazilian legend recognizes Messi’s place in the pantheon of all-time greats

Former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has said that he always knew Lionel Messi would surpass even the Brazilian’s own lofty heights, in an interview with FourFourTwo from 2014 that has recently been republished online.

How tough a decision was it to leave Barcelona? Is there any truth in the story that they felt you were a bad influence on a young Lionel Messi?

Shaun Robertson, via Facebook

It was easy – it was time to go. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of [Frank] Rijkaard,
who was my coach and said great things about Milan. I had other options, but I wanted to play for Milan. As for that stuff about Messi, it’s not true; you shouldn’t always believe what you read. I always tried to be a good influence on him and actually try to do for him what Ronaldo did for me. I felt embraced by Ronaldo and I wanted Leo to have the same. Messi was always very shy, but always a fantastic player. We lived on the same street, so I had a great relationship with him and his family. Even then I knew he was a better player than me.

The whole thing is worth a read, so check it out if you have the time.

Messi facing too much pressure with Argentina

Coutinho on the same level as Neymar, says Dani Alves

Dani Alves is never short of things to say and he’s been talking about Brazil and specifically Barcelona new-boy Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho scored his ninth international goal against Russia on Friday and put in a strong display as Tite’s side eased to a 3-0 win at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Alves has heaped praise on his team-mate and said he’s on the same level as Neymar, who is of course currently absent due to injury.

“I think that Coutinho is a player who is on the same level as Ney, he has a massive influence on our game and in his teams,” he said.

”When he was in Liverpool and now in Barca, he has improved a lot and learned to read the game better, to make the right decisions.

”That is great to see, to play with such a good footballer who has that ability. There are others who are similar. We are lucky to play with great players and have them on our side is fantastic. We have to get the best out of them and build a solid team.”

Source | Goal

Coutinho and Brazil are now in Berlin where they will take on Germany on Tuesday. Coutinho won’t come up against Marc-Andre ter Stegen though as the goalkeeper is being rested because of a minor knee problem.

Worry for Barca as Messi ruled out of Spain clash

Lionel Messi’s fitness is starting to become a real worry with multiple outlets reporting that the Barcelona star has been ruled out of Argentina’s clash with Spain on Tuesday.

Messi missed Friday’s win over Italy after feeling some discomfort in his hamstring and he admitted he had been carrying the problem for some time.

Coach Jorge Sampaoli played down the injury and Messi himself said that he was hoping to play against Spain but that it would depend on how he’s feeling.

Well, it seems that he’s not feeling too great and Barcelona must be growing concerned with Messi set to return to the club this week.

Barca resume La Liga action on Saturday as they travel to Sevilla and then have a pretty crucial Champions League quarter-final against Roma on Wednesday,

It’s difficult to know at this stage how big a problem Messi’s injury actually is and whether Argentina are simply doing the right thing and refusing to risk him at all.

Let’s hope it’s the latter.

Rumors: Luke Shaw, Umtiti, Rafinha & Cengiz Under

Barcelona interested in Luke Shaw?

Today’s rumors start in the Premier League with news that Barcelona are apparently interested in Manchester United flop Luke Shaw.

According to the Mirror, Barcelona want a new left-back and are planning a move with Shaw set to quit Old Trafford after falling out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho.

Barca think he could be a good value back-up to Jordi Alba with Lucas Digne potentially moving on in search of more regular minutes.

Umtiti threatens to leave Barcelona

Another day, another Samuel Umtiti story and today’s is from AS who reckon that the defender has threatened to leave the Camp Nou.

Again it seems to be wages that are the problem with Barca reluctant to meet his demands while Manchester United are seemingly happy to throw money in his direction.

There’s also a real suspicion that Umtiti may be using interest from United to get a better deal out of Barcelona and you suspect this story has some way to go yet.

Inter want to keep Rafinha

Over in Italy Rafinha is enjoying life at Inter Milan and the Serie A side seem to have been impressed with the Brazilian since he arrived from Barca in January.

So much so that they are really keen to keep hold of him when his loan deal expires in the summer, so say ESPN.

Inter have an option to buy the midfielder for 35 milion euros plus 3m in variables but need to talk to Barcelona as they want to try and get the price down a little bit.

Barcelona interested in Roma winger

And finally we end with news that Barcelona are apparently keen on Roma’s young winger Cengiz Under, according to Monchi.

The 20-year-old has caught the eye in the Italian capital this season and Monchi told Turkish radio station Radyospor that he heard Barcelona had asked about him, report AS.

Under has five Serie A goals for Roma this season and the club may get a closer look at him very soon with the two teams set to clash in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Marc-André ter Stegen Returns to Barcelona Early With Knee Issue

It’s not expected to be serious, though

Marc-André ter Stegen will be cutting his international duty short, as the German keeper returns to Barcelona early due to a knee issue. The player will not feature in Germany’s clash with Brazil.

Joachim Löw, his national team coach, has said the problem is not serious, and he will be rested as a precaution. Barcelona doctors are said to be eager to run tests just to make sure, however.

With Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) injured, Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) and Kevin Trapp (Paris Saint-Germain) are expected to split time between the posts this Wednesday.

Jorge Sampaoli: “It’s Impossible to Teach Messi Anything”

“He is at a superior level”

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli has said his job isn’t to teach Lionel Messi anything, because teaching the best player in the world is “impossible.”

“He is at a superior level,” the ex-Sevilla manager said. “What we have to do is understand and learn how to accompany him, we do not need to teach him anything.”

“Our priority is to establish the team’s functioning,” the coach said. “We have 70 to 80% of the ones who will be at the World Cup,”

Argentina are prepared to face Spain in a match that will feature a lot of Barcelona players. Sampaoli has said that, despite injury fears, Messi will play that game.

Messi Thought He Had Played His Last Argentina Match

He wouldn’t have played the 2018 FIFA World Cup then

Lionel Messi has revealed that he really thought he wouldn’t play in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia in an interview with FOX Sports.

“When I quit the national team, I thought I would not play with Argentina again,” the Barcelona star said, referring to the time after the 2016 Copa América when he announced he was quitting the Argentine national team.

Argentina were slogging through qualification to the World Cup without Messi, when finally, he announced he would return. ”When I came back, I regretted quitting,” he explained. “It even made me feel shame to think people thought I was disrespecting my teammates.”

The albiceleste were able to qualify, but in large part only due to Messi’s superhuman effort.

Some thought Messi was not serious and he was always planning to be “retired” for a short time before coming back, but the forward insists he really meant it: “People can think it was ‘smoke,’ but at the time it’s how I felt.”

Messi says he feels good and wants to play against Spain

Lionel Messi has confirmed he wants to play against Spain at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday despite concerns over a hamstring injury.

The Barcelona star missed Friday’s win over Italy because of the problem and admitted he had been carrying it for a while.

However, he’s now spoken about tomorrow’s game and says he wants to play but it will depend on how he’s feeling.

“My idea is to play against Spain, there’s only missing the last training session to see how I’ll be. I wanted to play against Italy but I trained normally yesterday, I felt good and hope to play.”

If Messi does play Barcelona will be watching the game nervously and praying he doesn’t make the problem worse ahead of the run-in.

World Cup or not, Lionel Messi is already the greatest

How to catch up with Barca stars during the international break

Barcelona aren’t back in action until Saturday when they face Sevilla but the players have got a busy week and will be putting in plenty of mileage. Here’s a look at what they’re up to.

Luis Suarez faces Wales in China Cup

Luis Suarez is still in China where Uruguay face Wales in the final of the China Cup at the Guangxi Stadium. The striker is expected to feature in the match, after scoring against Czech Republic last time out, and will then make the long trip back to Europe.

Andre Gomes and Portugal face Netherlands

Andre Gomes will be hoping for some minutes when Portugal take on Netherlands in Geneva on Monday. The midfielder was left out of the starting lineup for Portugal’s 2-1 win over Egypt but was given the last half an hour as he replaced Joao Moutinho.

Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Digne head to Russia

Frace are in Saint Petersburg where they take on World Cup hosts Russia. Didier Deschamps’ team suffered a bit of a surprise defeat to Colombia on Friday as they lost 3-2, having been 2-0 up.

Les Bleus could really do with a win but it’s difficult to predict what team Deschamps will go for. Lucas Digne was forced off with an injury against Colombia but said it wasn’t too serious afterwards. Umtiti wil probably start and Dembele could come off the bench again.

Ter Stegen faces Coutinho and Paulinho

There’s no doubt the standout fixture of this week is the match between Germany and Brazil in Berlin that pits Marc-Andre ter Stegen against Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho.

Barca’s Brazilian pair both scored in the win against Russia and will be hoping to continue their superb international form as two teams who will be favourites to win the World Cup clash.

Will Messi be fit enough to take on Spain?

There’s another enticing clash at the Wanda Metropolitano as Spain host Argentina. There are doubts over whether Lionel Messi will play although according to Jorge Sampaoli’s notebook he will start.

Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and Jordi Alba all started Spain’s 1-1 draw with Germany and could feature again. Iniesta was in great form setting up the opening goal for Rodrigo and only played the first half so we might see him for just 45 minutes again.

Rakitic in Dallas to take on Mexico

Ivan Rakitic is out in America with Croatia who were beaten 2-0 by Peru in Miami last week. Many of the team, including Luka Modric, Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Perisic, have headed back to Europe but Rakitic remains with the team.

Croatia take on Mexico at the AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, on Tuesday with Rakitic expected to feature before heading back to Barcelona.

Yerry Mina faces Australia in London

Yerry Mina is in London with Colombia where he will face Australia at Fulham’s Craven Cottage. Colombia produced a memorable comeback win to beat France in Paris last week and will be favourites to beat Bert van Marwijk’s Socceroos.

Opinion: Barcelona’s Priority Should Be Renewing Samuel Umtiti

Manchester United are very keen on a transfer

Barcelona’s renewal talks with Samuel Umtiti are “jammed” according to Diario SPORT, because the team does not want to pay him the salary Manchester United offered - 9 million euro a year, net. The Frenchman has refused to answer whether he would remain at Barcelona or not, with United said to be ready to pay his release clause should he choose not to renew.

Of course, a team has to do whatever possible to get the best financial deal. They cannot give into all demands a player makes, some amount of haggling is to be expected. But Barcelona shouldn’t go to the edge here. It’s playing with fire.

Given Umtiti’s age and quality, you have, potentially, one of the world’s best defenders for a very long time. Finding a replacement, if one exists who is as good, will not be cheap.

There’s no question that retaining Umtiti should be a priority for the Catalans. Umtiti could simply be playing off United’s interest to get a better contract. That’s certainly within his rights. And Barcelona can make arguments to reduce his wage demands, since he seems extremely comfortable in Barcelona. At the end of the day though, the Blaugrana simply can’t screw this up. They have to be prepared to splash some money. Once again, the alternative will not be cheap.

Transfer Rumors: Samuel Umtiti Renewal Talks “Jammed”

Barcelona unwilling to match Manchester United’s offered salary - report

“Umtiti in danger!” shouts tomorrow’s front cover of DIario SPORT. That’s because the player has a low release clause until his contract is renewed, and the talks have become “jammed” for the time being, according to the daily. Supposedly, Barcelona are unwilling to match the offer Manchester United have made for the Frenchman, a cool 9 million euro per year net.

Samuel Umtiti has impressed fans since his arrival to Barcelona, quickly becoming a starter, and some say, one of the world’s best defenders. But his release clause remains at the original price set when he signed, 60 million euro. The transfer market has inflated since then, to the point that such a staggering figure is actually quite cheap given his quality.

Umtiti was recently asked on French TV whether he’d renew with Barcelona. On the show Téléfoot, Umtiti was involved in a segment (along with Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud) which asked quickfire questions for them to answer yes or no. The defender was asked first if he would renew, and second whether he’d join Manchester United. Umtiti simply said “joker,” an expression used to avoid answering a question (essentially, “pass”) as an answer to both questions.

Messi has a revolver to his head called the World Cup - Sampaoli

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli is a pretty colourful character and he’s come up with some pretty interesting quotes about our man Lionel Messi.

Turns out Sampaoli’s written a book which is due to be released in April, but extracts have been published in “Viva”, Clarin’s Sunday magazine and they’re pretty entertaining

“Messi has a revolver put to his head called the World Cup and if he doesn’t win it, he’s shot and killed. As a result, he can’t enjoy his talent.

”What I find is that the negativity surrounding international football damages Messi.

“At this moment, I feel that I’m coaching the best player in history. This is a guy who has stayed as the best in the world for 10 years.

“It’s difficult to assume a level of control when your leader knows he’s better than you, he executes things like nobody else.”

Source | Viva

Despite Messi’s incredible success at club level and generally amazing ability there’s still an argument that he can’t be described as the greatest of all time until he wins the World Cup with Argentina.

That does place huge pressure on Messi on international duty and all eyes will be on him once again in Russia this summer to see if he can help Argentina win it for the first time since 1986.
