Official: Alex Grimaldo Signs For SL Benfica

*Cue criticism of the board in 3..2...1...*

It's all change at FC Barcelona B; following the announcement of a couple of new signings yesterday, the club announced a high-profile departure this morning, as club captain and Catalan full-back, Alejandro Grimaldo has officially put pen to paper on a four-year deal at SL Benfica. The Lisbon giants have paid €1.5 million to secure his services, while the Blaugrana will retain a share of the profits from any future sale. At present, the exact percentage has not been disclosed.

For years, Grimaldo has been tipped to make a breakthrough for the senior squad and establish himself as a starting full-back for his boyhood club, but due to a combination of injury and the signing of Jordi Alba, Grimaldo's path to the first team has been blocked, hence this decision to try his luck overseas. Naturally, most Barcelona fans are somewhat unhappy about the decision, using this as yet another opportunity to criticise the incumbent board. That being said, it's difficult to see how they could have handled this any differently.

Jordi Alba is clearly our starting left-back, and a player of Grimaldo's talent and age needs regular game time to progress and improve. He was never going to get that here, and it makes perfect sense for him to move to Portugal, where he can start to move forward with his career at one of Portugal's best sides, not to mention a perennial UEFA Champions League participant.

The door is always open for a return, and don't be surprised if a few years down the line, we see Alejandro back where he belongs -- in a Blaugrana jersey.
