Lionel Messi and Munir El-Haddadi Suffer Injuries In Villarreal Match

Nothing serious, in principle.

Following Barcelona's hard-fought win against Villarreal on Sunday, two players left the field with injuries, the club announced right after the game.

The statement from Barça's website is this:

Following the 1-0 win at Villarreal, the Club Medical Services have released a statement regarding the conditions of Lionel Messi and Munir.

The former has pulled an adductor muscle in right hip, and precautionary measures will be required. Meanwhile, Munir has bruising on his right thigh. Tests on Tuesday should be able to determine the full extent of the injury.

The Argentinian played all ninety minutes of the win at El Madrigal, while Munir was on the field for 59 of them.

From what it seems, none of those injuries are serious, so there's no reason to worry.

Messi is most likely going to be left out of Argentina's squad that will play friendlies in the next two weeks, so he can fully recover from the contusion.

Munir's problem is minor, so his rehab process will be quick. Both are expected to play for Barça on the team's next Liga game, against Athletic Bilbao, September 13 at Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique: "The effort from the players was amazing"

He's nothing but happy with the win.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is extremely happy with his team's win over Villarreal in a tough match at El Madrigal. At the press conference after the game, Lucho congratulated his players for their effort, and also gave Sandro Ramírez his praise for scoring the late game-winner.

Here's a few highlights of his answers:

"The effort from the players was amazing. We knew it was going to be a hard match to win, but they never stopped fighting. They did it until the end. We had faith in the win and this result deserved to come our way.

Villarreal played really well, but we never lost composure despite of their pressure. We also created great chances, even though the pitch was in a really bad condition. But we played through it.

It's very gratifying for me as a coach to give the young guys these chances and see them make the most out of it. I'm really happy with how Munir and Sandro have been helping us. I'm sure Sandro is happy about scoring the game-winner in his First Division debut, as he should be.

But we also need to keep our heads in the right place. We haven't done anything yet. We took two steps in the right direction, but there's still 36 steps to be taken. But, winning such difficult matches like these make us feel happy and proud, and optimistic. But there's still a lot of work to be done, and we know it. For now, we can celebrate. It was a very good win."

Good job, Lucho. Good job, Barça.

La Liga: Villarreal CF 0-1 FC Barcelona: Match Review

A comprehensive, blow-by-blow recap of Barcelona's hard-fought 1-0 win over Villarreal CF at El Madrigal on Sunday evening, as Sandro's late winner was enough to secure the three points

FC Barcelona didn’t always have it their own way on Sunday evening at El Madrigal, but ultimately, it wasn’t to matter as the Blaugrana emerged victorious courtesy of substitute Sandro’s late winner after another moment of magic from Lionel Messi. Villarreal had worked hard all game, making countless interventions and blocks to apparently steal a point from their title-chasing visitors, only for Messi to make the difference with time wearing down. It wasn’t a vintage performance, nor was it always pretty, but it’s three points all the same.

Luis Enrique made two changes to the side that defeated Elche CF 3-0 last weekend, both forced, as Javier Mascherano dropped out of the starting line-up as to serve his suspension for last week’s red card while Andrés Iniesta had to miss the trip to El Madrigal through injury. That meant a recall for Gerard Piqué, who missed the win over Elche serving a suspension of his own, and a first start of the season for Pedro, who missed out on a starting berth in the campaign opener as he recovered from illness.

Of course, Pedro wasn’t about to drop into midfield, so Lucho was forced to switch it up a little; Rafinha Alcântara dropped back into midfield as he was favoured ahead of Xavi Hernández – and Munir was also handed his second start with the senior squad after his debut goal, meaning that the returning Neymar would have to settle for a place on the bench. Clearly, Luis Enrique had a gameplan in mind; could the Blaugrana implement that gameplan and retain their 100% record?

***

The early signs were encouraging; Barcelona started the match promisingly, monopolising possession and forcing the Villarreal rearguard into action. For the most part, Villarreal were equal to Barça’s attacks but the warning signs were there. Barcelona were retrieving possession almost immediately after losing it, meaning there was no real end to this spell of early pressure, and with the likes of Munir, Lionel Messi and Dani Alves on the field, the Blaugrana had attacking talent in abundance.

Having failed to clear their lines following a corner from Ivan Rakitić, Villarreal couldn’t close down Munir el Haddadi, who tried his luck with an effort from long-range as he met the loose ball just outside the Villarreal area. Moments later, Lionel Messi was allowed just enough time and space to test Sergio Asenjo with a snapshot – thankfully for Marcelino’s side, Messi’s effort was right at the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper.

Still, the early barrage continued. A low cross from the impressive Dani Alves prompted an excellent last-ditch intervention from Mateo Musacchio, just as Munir looked ready to pull the trigger and convert this golden chance.

At the other end, despite being stretched by the demands of Enrique’s high-pressure system, the Barça defense was looking strong and holding firm. Villarreal opted to drop their main striker Ikechukwu Uche in favour of a more dynamic, counter-attack orientated frontline led by former Barça starlet, Giovani dos Santos and naturally, this meant that the Yellow Submarine had the tools to theoretically trouble the Blaugrana backline. Running between the lines, Real Madrid loanee Denis Cheryshev looked bright, but Gerard Piqué was forcing him wide, where Jeremy Mathieu was often on hand to snuff out the danger.

It was that fluidity, both defensively and offensively, that was so encouraging about Luis Enrique’s new-look Barça – everyone seemed to be everywhere, in the sense that they all knew where they needed to be at any given time, in any given scenario.

The hunger to retain and regain possession was also evident; Lionel Messi’s hard work in midfield won the ball back just inside the Villarreal half, and this turnover ensured that the hosts’ backline was a little more chaotic than usual. With a little more space in which to operate, Pedro was the beneficiary; played through on goal by a great pass from Messi, Pedro forced a good save from Asenjo with a powerful effort across goal. Barcelona were getting closer...

Villarreal appeared content to bide their time. In spite of their possession, Barcelona were not creating as many clear-cut chances as they might have hoped, and Marcelino knew that his side could thrive on the counter-attack.

The only trouble was, whenever they forced a turnover from the Barça attack, they simply couldn’t capitalise. While they created one-on-one opportunities for their forwards up against the Barcelona defense, Piqué in particular looked to be in imperious form, emasculating Cheryshev with a highlight-reel sliding challenge as the Russian attempted to enter the opposition half around the 18 minute mark.

Indeed, in every aspect of the game, Barcelona seemed to be in control. That is, until Villarreal earned themselves a corner kick.

Having failed to cause any significant problems from their first, more orthodox corner, Villarreal opted for something a little smarter. It really was a move from the training ground – the corner was taken short and swung in at the second time of asking where Bruno flicked it on to find Victor Ruiz in space at the back-post. The goal was gaping, it seemed like a sure-fire opener – but Ruiz couldn’t control the ball or a first-time shot and the chance went begging.

Barça responded in kind with a chance of their own; Messi surged forward for the first time in the game with some real space ahead of him, and selflessly opted to play it out wide to Pedro. The Spaniard dropped a shoulder, tried to take on his man and was felled in the area. The referee however was unmoved by his protests and play continued.

Minutes later, an accidental clip of the heels by Cani on Alves gifted Barcelona their first free-kick of the night, and despite its position near the corner of the penalty area, this was definitely in "Messi range". Sure enough, Messi did try his luck on goal and very nearly succeeded in spectacular fashion, only for Asenjo to palm the ball onto the post before Villarreal scrambled the ball out of danger.

Closer again, but Barça still didn’t have a goal to show for their efforts.

With the final ball somewhat lacking, the frustration was growing in the Barcelona camp. After a loose touch presented Villarreal with a chance to counter a corner kick, Pedro was a little over-exuberant in his attempt to regain possession and picked up the game’s first yellow card for his troubles. Rakitić and Alves threatened to join him just moments later as Rakitić’s ill-timed challenge prompted groans of dissent from the Brazilian full-back, but the referee was lenient and the pair escaped without further punishment.

This wasn’t the time for Barcelona to lose their heads though; they had to keep calm, keep plugging away and eventually their hard work would pay dividends. Alves, as ever, didn’t get that memo and took an issue with the referee after a non-call on the offensive end left him nursing a knock on his hip, earning him a yellow for dissent.

Deservedly, after an opening period of hard-work and disciplined play, Villarreal entered the interval level. They had covered more ground, actually conceded fewer fouls and the odd moment aside, had never looked too troubled by the Barça attack. Even at this early stage of the season, a crucial 45 minutes awaited FC Barcelona.

***

It that seems negative, it isn’t. Through 135 minutes of La Liga action, new signing Claudio Bravo was yet to make a single save – so much for the whole "shaky Barcelona defense" narrative. At the other end, sure, there were aspects that could have been better but on the whole, it was an adequate display. With a little more movement and with options like Neymar off the bench, there was still plenty of time for Barcelona to pick up the victory they so desperately craved.

To their credit, Villarreal started the second half well. Cheryshev again was at the forefront of their attacks and his pace down the left-flank was causing problems. So too was Cani, whose low cross into the Barça six-yard box looked dangerous. Mathieu couldn’t leave it – so he threw out an out-stretched leg and diverted it clear. Well, as clear as he could, which turned out to be onto the frame of his own goal. Bravo collected the loose ball, and all was well. A scare of course, but nothing more.

After an impressive competitive debut last weekend, Munir was looking quiet. Pedro had been ineffective – when would Lucho roll the dice and throw Neymar into the action? With ten minutes gone in the second period, Neymar had started his warm-up, signed a couple of autographs and returned to the bench; but still there was no sign of him entering the fray at El Madrigal.

Villarreal continued to defend as they did in the first-half; sitting back, absorbing pressure and directing the Barcelona play out wide for the full-backs to throw in aimless crosses. Enrique had seen enough – it was time for Neymar.

Munir was the man who made way; he had worked hard, but had very few touches of the ball and generally struggled to get involved with the play. Neymar was on to rectify that and he did so immediately. Combining with Messi, Neymar played the ball into space for Ivan Rakitić to fire in a low cross, forcing a hurried clearance from the Villarreal defense. Suddenly, the tempo had been upped another gear or two; would an opening goal follow suit?

With the game still tied at 0-0, Villarreal also had one eye on the prize. Cheryshev had worked incredibly hard and looked bright in attack, but after a little more than an hour, Marcelino made a change – off went the Madridista and on came an Argentine talent in the shape of young Luciano Vietto. The forward grabbed a brace in his midweek debut against FC Astana of Kazakhstan, surely he couldn’t follow up with another goal against FC Barcelona?

Only time would tell, but for the moment, attentions turned back to another Argentine – Lionel Messi – who appeared to have had enough with the rough play of the Villarreal midfield, Voicing his frustrations at the referee after yet another foul, Messi nearly curled the resulting free-kick into the top corner of Asenjo’s net, prompting an incredible save from the Spanish keeper. Messi then rose highest from the corner, but couldn’t direct his free header on target.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner then turned creator for Neymar, as Messi’s low cross caused an almighty scare in the Villarreal backline and a jaw-dropping goal-line block from Victor Ruiz who put his body on the line to deny Neymar.

With the Blaugrana still searching for that opener, Lucho made his second change of the night. Off went Pedro, on came Barça B forward Sandro, who we all know is capable of grabbing a goal or two. Villarreal were tiring – but still they had enough to continue denying the Barça attack. Another block, this time on a shot from Sandro before another last-ditch intervention as Neymar tried to pull the trigger.

They were doing everything in their power to keep the Blaugrana out, and at the other end, Tomas Pina came agonisingly close to grabbing a shock opener. His shot from the edge of the area had Claudio Bravo beaten, only to rattle the frame of the goal. End-to-end stuff at El Madrigal, and yet the two teams were still tied at 0-0.

Enter Xavi.

When the final ball has been lacking, who better to bring off the bench than a club legend, current club captain and all-round superstar in Xavi? Rafinha made way, perhaps liberating Rakitić to venture a little further forward in the process.

Xavi’s intelligence was a sore sight for the weary legs of the Villarreal defense, stretching the play Xavi found Rakitić in space on the left for a low cross. While that didn’t result in a chance, it did find Alves at the back-post who in turn found Messi for a shot at goal. Cue another block from Bruno and the Villarreal defense.

For the hosts, it was ten minutes left to endure. For the visitors, time was swiftly running out for that elusive winning goal. The script seemed to be the same – cross, chance, block – and then suddenly, Messi tore it up. He’d had enough of the blocks, the last-ditch challenges and saves. Beating the offside trap with a smart run, Messi was through; he feigned one way, then back towards the touchline and stabbed the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs. Was it going in? Sandro made sure by bundling the ball into the back of the net.

It might have taken in excess of 80 minutes, but Barça were finally on the board.

Villarreal weren’t going to accept their fate though; there was still work to be done. A nervy moment after another corner saw Giovani come close to an equaliser, but all in all, Barcelona’s defense was stepping up. Whenever a mistake was made, Villarreal followed suit with one of their own. A moment of madness from Mathieu gifted Vietto with a good chance on goal, but the inexperienced Argentine blazed the ball well wide of the target.

Things might not have always gone to plan tonight, but Barcelona pushed on regardless. They worked hard, persevered and had their rewards – a valuable three points at one of the toughest grounds in Spanish football. What more could you ask for?

With the international break looming, Barcelona’s next fixture comes in 13 days time, when Athletic Bilbao visit the Camp Nou. Until then, Visca el Barça!

Juan Cuadrado Announces Fiorentina Stay

Just to confirm what we all knew

Not that we didn't know that before, but Juan Cuadrado is officially going nowhere.

With one day left on the European transfer window, there was still a little chance that the Colombia international could leave Fiorentina, but the 26-year-old himself took care of announcing he's not moving out of the Fiore.

He did that Saturday afternoon, on Twitter:

"I'm happy to announce I'm staying, and I'm sure me and my teammates can lead the Fiore to more and more glory..."

We reported last week that Barcelona had already discarded signing Cuadrado. Both Juan and Fiorentina asked too much money, and he wasn't willing to play as a right-back at Barça, as Luis Enrique had planned. Even Manchester United, considered gigantic favorites to land the player, decided to go in another direction and signed Ángel Di María.

He's now staying in Italy, and he seems to be happy.

FC Barcelona News: 31 August 2014; Barça Players Arrive in Villarreal, Alex Song Loaned to West Ham

FC Barcelona arrive in Villarreal by train | FC Barcelona

Barça play the second game of the league season this evening at 7.00 PM CET away to Villarreal at El Madrigal. They made the journey by train, and left Sants Station this morning at 9.00 AM. On arrival in Villarreal, they went immediately to a hotel, where they will relax for a few hours. Luis Enrique has named 18 players in his squad, including Neymar, who was declared fit this week, but not Andrés Iniesta, who is having trouble with his left knee.

Villarreal v FC Barcelona: Big test in El Madrigal | FC Barcelona

Luis Enrique recognised in his pre-match press conference that the game at El Madrigal will be a great chance to show just where Barça stand as he goes into his first season in charge. A convincing 3-0 win against Elche on the opening day put the Catalans into an early lead in La Liga.

Luis Enrique: "Each game is a new test" | FC Barcelona

Luis Enrique has spoken to the press on the eve of Barça’s first away trip of the season, which takes them to Villarreal, "one of the strongest teams in the league. We know the opponent and the venue. They have a good coach who has made good signings. It’ll be an attractive game for us and we’ll have to get things right in attack." The game will see FCB up against three former players in Jonathan and Giovanni dos Santos, and Espinosa.

FC Barcelona players' international fixtures | FC Barcelona

There’s a busy schedule ahead for the Barça internationals. Busquets, Iniesta, Jordi Alba, Pedro and Bartra are all off to play for Spain, while Neymar, Mascherano, Messi, Claudio Bravo, Rakitic and Rafinha will all be playing for their countries too.

Alex Song, loaned to West Ham | FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona and West Ham United have reached an agreement for the loan of Alex Song to Premiership club for the 2014-15 season. The Cameroon international midfielder joined Barça from Arsenal in the summer of 2012. Since then he has made 65 official appearances in the Barça colours, scoring one goal.

Camp Nou Champions League tickets on sale from September 2 | FC Barcelona

Sales of Champions League group stage tickets will open next Tuesday 10 September from 10.00 AM CET. The three visitors to the Camp Nou will be APOEL Nicosia, Ajax Amsterdam and Paris Saint Germain. On the first day, only non-season ticket holding FC Barcelona members will be able to purchase these tickets, and get a special 20% discount on the cost. They day after, September 3, and also at 10.00 AM CET, sales will be open to the general public.

Recovering Ronaldo rested for Real's clash with Sociedad | Eurosport

The Portuguese has struggled with injuries since the back end of last season and has also not been called up by Portugal for the upcoming international break, which means almost three weeks off for the mercurial 29-year-old."He is okay but we have preferred to use this week and the following two for him to recover fully and get him in top condition. He will not play tomorrow and is not in the squad," Ancelotti told a news conference in Madrid.

First win for Atletico Madrid | Sky Sports Football

The defending champions looked to be cruising when goals from Miranda and Mario Mandzukic, his first league strike since joining from Bayern Munich over the summer, gave them a cushion on home soil. But Abraham pulled one back for newly-promoted Eibar and they could have snatched a point in the dying minutes but for a timely intervention from goalkeeper Miguel Moya to deny Angel Rodriguez.

Three and easy for Bilbao | Sky Sports Football

Having lost narrowly at Malaga a week ago, Ernesto Valverde's men got their season up and running in some style at San Mames. Aritz Aduriz got the opener 32 minutes in and Ander Iturraspe erased the prospect of any late nerves with a second after the break.

Sevilla impress at Espanyol | Sky Sports Football

Goals from Carlos Bacca and Vicente Iborra in each half had put Unai Emery's side in command but Christian Stuani put the Catalans back in the game and set up an exciting finish. The Europa League champions held on, though, and could even have extended their lead late on.

Cordoba 1-1 Celta Vigo - ESPN FC

Fabian Orellana gave Eduardo Berrizo's side the lead early in the second half with a fortuitous goal that owed a lot to a lapse in concentration by Cordoba goalkeeper Juan Carlos, but Fede Cartabia saved his team-mate's blushes by thumping in an equaliser seven minutes later.

La Liga: Villarreal CF vs FC Barcelona: Predict the Score

A chance to predict the score of FC Barcelona's second La Liga fixture of the season against Villarreal CF

FC Barcelona face their first real test of the season so far, and indeed of Luis Enrique's reign as manager tonight, when they travel south to El Madrigal to take on Villarreal CF in La Liga action. The Yellow Submarine occupied third position after an impressive 2-0 win in their season opener against Levante UD, trailing only the Blaugrana and Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid. In that sense, make no mistake: Villarreal are one of the strongest teams in La Liga and an away trip to El Madrigal might just be as tough as it gets.

Thankfully, Villarreal aren't invincible. They have weaknesses just like any other side; including a lack of width and they arguably lack a true midfield destroyer as well, meaning that the Barça midfield could run riot if Bruno Soriano struggles to establish himself in the middle of the park. The pace they possess on the counter-attack is a threat, but it's nothing that the Blaugrana haven't seen before; instead the defensive focus will be on Cani's creativity and Giovani's one-on-one dribbling ability -- I'm sure we won't want to see Gio bearing down on Pique too often for example.

That being said, Villarreal have more than enough problems of their own to contend with. Luis Enrique's appointment as head coach has heralded a slight change in tactics from Barcelona; Messi still has that free role, but the two "wingers" are now positioned closer to the area, and closer to goal in inside-forward positions, creating more opportunities for Messi to play the killer ball.

With a dominant grip over possession and fluid movement in attack, Barcelona should be too strong for Villarreal -- but what do you think will happen at El Madrigal tonight?

Predict the score of tonight's match between FC Barcelona and Villarreal CF by commenting with your prediction below. Best of luck!

FC Barcelona B vs CE Sabadell FC Match Review

Barça got a very good win.

Good Saturday for the little Culés, as Barça B got the best of Sabadell in a Catalunya derby for the Jornada 2 of Liga Adelante, Spain's second division. The mini-Blaugrana won 3-1 at the Mini Camp Nou.

But the team had to bounce back. Despite a very good start, in which they dominated the posession and had good pace, Barça B showed their usual defensive mistakes in the 9th minute, when Kiko Olivas found himself free in front of the goal, putting Sabadell ahead with a header following a corner-kick from the right side.

Two minutes later, Olivas would appear again, this time committing a penalty on Dongou that got him sent off. However, Dongou missed the PK, hitting the bar. Barça increased their level of intensity and dominated the match even more, and they got their reward after another penalty, this time on Joan Román. Barça B's number 10 was calm and confident, and dislocated the goalkeeper to score the equalizer ten minutes before halftime.

Coming back from the locker room, Eusebio Sacristán's side kept pressing the rivals, with important passes by Alen Halilovic, who bounced back from a not so good game the week before to a very impressive showing, controlling the pace and delivering accurate passes all around the pitch during his 74-minute performance. Three minutes after Alen was subbed off, Barça finally went ahead, after a fantastic team play resulted in Patric assisting Doungou, and the striker didn't miss this time. 2-1 Barça B.

There was still be time left to another goal, and it happened in impressive fashion. Adama Traoré came up with one of his insane runs through the defense. After clearing up the right side, Adama gave the ball to Dongou, who showed enough composure to find the back of the net and guarantee Barça B's first win in Liga Adelante.

The mini-Culés take the field next Sunday, as they welcome Zaragoza to Barcelona for Jornada 3. As of right now, they'll enjoy a very good win. Let's hope they keep it up.

Report: Alex Song to West Ham United is a Done Deal

Goodbye, Systeme Tchakap.

It's done: the Systeme Tchakap Era is over at FC Barcelona, as the Blaugrana have reached an agreement with West Ham United for the transfer of Alex Song back to the Premier League.

Reports from all the reliable sources in the universe say it's a done deal. Sky Sports reported first, and we're able to confirm it, too. Song is indeed going to the London side.

In fact, West Ham's chairman, David Gold, hinted at it on Twitter on Saturday:

Yes, Gold thinks Song is "a big signing", but hey, we believe you, mister!

It's still unclear what the deal is, but sources say Barça would pay a portion of Song's wages. Let's wait for official confirmation by both clubs, but it's a fact that Song is finally leaving Barça.

Goodbye, Lord. You will not be missed.

FC Barcelona Squad Named for Second La Liga Match

Luis Enrique has selected eighteen players to form the squad that is taking on Villarreal for La Liga's Jornada 2, featuring the return of Neymar

FC Barcelona's second official match of the season is upon us, as the Blaugrana will take on Villarreal at El Madrigal Stadium. Barça is unbeaten at Villarreal's home in the last five encounters, and they want to keep the streak alive to end Jornada 2 as the Liga leaders.

Luis Enrique has selected the eighteen players that will form the squad, and we could see the return of Neymar, as the Brazilian has been named by the boss to play on Saturday. Piqué is also back from suspension and is able to make his season debut.

In terms of absentees, Andrés Iniesta is the surprising name. Barça's captain has a knee discomfort, as described by Lucho, and the doctors thought it was better to have him rest for this match. Ter Stegen and Vermaelen are still nursing injuries. Luis Suárez and Javier Mascherano are suspended. Adriano Correia and new signing Doulgas Pereira had been left out of the squad per Enrique's decision.

These are the 18 men elected to put on uniform for Barça tonight:

Claudio Bravo, Jordi Masip, Dani Alves, Martín Montoya, Gerard Piqué, Marc Bartra, Jérémy Mathieu, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Xavi Hernández, Sergi Roberto, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Munir El-Haddadi, Pedro, Rafinha Alcântara and Sandro.

Expected Starting Lineup (4-3-3) - Bravo; Alves, Piqué, Mathieu, Alba; Busquets, Xavi, Rakitic; Munir, Messi, Neymar.

The game starts at 19:00 CET. Vamos Barça!

Barca Blaugranes: Community Ground Rules

In light of recent "events" and following the site’s rapid growth in recent months, I thought it would be useful to re-establish and reiterate a number of community ground rules. Perhaps in the past, Barça Blaugranes has not enforced any rigid rules per se, and really moderated the community on an ad-hoc basis where and when the situation called for it. That was fine in previous years and months, but now, it’s time for change.

In the interest of keeping the community civil, keeping conversations in the appropriate places and generally making Barça Blaugranes a nice place both to be as a member of the community and as an author, let’s go over these new ground rules:

  • Keep it civil and respect the authors

From my perspective, this is the most important rule. If you don’t follow this rule, I, and my fellow moderators are unlikely to cut you any slack. As such, don’t make the mistake in the first place; when our authors publish something, please afford them the respect that you would expect in the comments section: respect their opinion, refrain from personal attacks or insults and generally think whether you would appreciate if someone said something similar about you.

As you may already know, we contribute to and run this blog in our free-time; any unfair criticisms, disrespect or insults are going to make us think twice about contributing in the future. We want to bring the best Barça content to Barça Blaugranes for you guys, don’t make us question that decision.

Bottom Line: Anyone violating this rule will be banned. One strike, and you’re out.

  • Keep comment threads on topic

Another relatively straight-forward point. If an article is published about a new signing for instance, please direct all conversation about Cristiano Ronaldo for example to another, more appropriate thread, such as the Off Topic Thread, the daily threads published by Renato...I’m sure you get the picture.

Of course we want to promote discussion about everything FCB-related, but equally, please appreciate that comment threads were designed to further the conversation on that particular article – and most writers would agree that they don’t want their latest article to be sidetracked by a debate about another unrelated topic.

Bottom Line: This isn’t likely to warrant any bans, but we will message you to help keep you on track where appropriate

  • Respect each other’s opinions

Similar to the first point, so this shouldn’t need much explaining: respect everyone else’s opinion too. If you disagree with a particular point raised by someone else, don’t belittle their opinion or insult them, either present a valid counterpoint, or, simply move on.

Bottom Line: Depends on the severity of the offense, expect warnings and bans for repeat/severe offenders

  • Do not "troll" other blogs

You all know that Barça Blaugranes is part of SB Nation, which is part of Vox Media and so on; there are other blogs on the network and I’m sure many of you visit some of these sites. Anyone found to violate the rules set by other blogs and banned from participation will likely face the same fate at Barça Blaugranes.

The reason for this is twofold: firstly, anyone violating rules elsewhere is clearly incapable or unwilling to follow them, and secondly, anyone commenting elsewhere by extension "represents" Barça Blaugranes. There is nothing more frustrating as site manager who has dedicated a good chunk of my time and effort to building Barça Blaugranes than hearing this site’s name being dragged through the mud as a result of the actions of its members. We’re all one big happy family, so play nice.

Bottom Line: If you’re banned from another blog for trolling, you can reasonably expect to be banned here as well

That just about covers it for the moment; happy commenting folks!

FC Barcelona September Schedule

All matches have been officially announced. Tough month for Barça

FC Barcelona has a tough road in the first month of the season.

Because of the FIFA dates at the beginning of the month, the Blaugrana will only play at the second half of the month, and there's a tough road ahead. Not really in terms of the competition, but the tightness of the schedule. Barça will play five games in a span of fourteen days, a real test for the strength of this squad, since coach Luis Enrique will need to rotate the roster to avoid early injuries.

Among the september games is Barça's debut in the UEFA Champions League, against APOEL at Camp Nou. Here's Barça schedule:

FC Barcelona News: 29 August 2014; Gerard Pique Snubbed by Vicente del Bosque, Douglas Arrives in Barcelona

FC Barcelona drawn with PSG, Ajax and APOEL | FC Barcelona

Barça have learned who they will be playing in the group stage of the 2014/15 Champions League. The Catalans’ quest to win the title for the fifth time begins in Group F, where today’s draw in Monaco paired them up with Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax Amsterdam and APOEL Nicosia.

FC Barcelona's three opponents | FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona learned on Thursday evening that their 2014/15 Champions League bid will commence in Group F, which they’ll share with Paris Saint Germain, Ajax Amsterdam and Apoel Nicosia, the respective league champions of France, Holland and Cyprus.

Champions League Group F: Did you know? | FC Barcelona

Two recent meetings with Paris Saint Germain. This will be Barça’s third meeting with the side from the French capital in recent times. Rafinha and Leo Messi both scored in a preseason friendly in 2012, and later in that season, the two sides met again, this time in the Champions League quarter finals.

Douglas: "This is the pinnacle for me" | FC Barcelona

After landing at El Prat airport on Friday morning. Douglas Pereira spoke to Barça TV and explained: "This is the pinnacle for me - this is everything I could wish for. I am so happy to be able to represent this Club. I want to thank everyone involved in me coming here and I just hope I can return their confidence in me on the pitch"

Ten things to know about Douglas Pereira | FC Barcelona

Douglas Pereira dos Santos (6 August 1990), the latest signing for the 2014/15 season, is here to add depth to the right hand side of the Barça midfield. The Brazilian started out as a professional at Goiás before moving on to Sao Paulo and now crossing the Atlantic for the first time to join Barça. This is your chance to learn a little more about the player:

Rakitic: "The most important thing is that we're getting better" | FC Barcelona

It was Ivan Rakitic’s turn to speak to the media on Thursday, and naturally the main focus was this weekend’s game with Villarreal. "It’ll be difficult because Marcelino makes his teams work very hard" said the Croatian. "But we just have to focus on ourselves. We’re very positive about the trip".

Barcelona's past games at El Madrigal | FC Barcelona

Luis Enrique’s side face their first away trip of the season on Sunday with a trip to El Madrigal to face Villarreal, which has proved a tough ground since the "Yellow Submarine" were first promoted to the top flight at the start of the century. Since then, Barça have played Villarreal 28 times, winning 14 games, drawing 6 and losing 8 times. At El Madrigal, Barça have won 7 times, drawn 2 games and lost on 5 occasions.

Rafinha back training with full squad | FC Barcelona

Rafinha Alcántara, who worked apart on Thursday, was again back with the full squad as was Neymar Jr, although he has still to be given the medical all clear. The injured Thomas Vermaelen and Marc-André Ter Stegen continued to work separately on their recoveries.

New faces in Spain squad | Football Espana

Old hands Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas, David Silva and Andres Iniesta are also named, as is Diego Costa, despite concerns from Chelsea over his hamstring injury, but there is no place for Gerard Pique.

Bayern Munich sign Xabi Alonso from Real Madrid | Sky Sports

Bayern Munich have announced that Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso has joined the club from Real Madrid on a two-year deal. The 32-year-old former Liverpool player, who won last season's Champions League trophy with Real, said in a news conference in Madrid that Bayern had provided him with a new challenge.

Valencia bid for Manchester United's Tom Cleverley | Sky Sports

The Spanish club have made a surprise move for the 25-year-old England international who has also been the subject of bids from Aston Villa and Hull City. United manager Louis van Gaal may be prepared to listen to offers for Cleverley, who has just 12 months left on his contract, as he looks to shake things up at Old Trafford following a poor start to the season.

Scouting Report: Douglas Pereira

Just who the heck is this guy? We've got you covered!

As you know, FC Barcelona's latest signing of the summer comes by the name of Douglas Pereira. The 24-year-old right-back will be officially presented as a Blaugrana on Friday at the Camp Nou, after he goes through medicals and signs his five-year contract.

When you heard the news, you possibly asked yourself: "Just who the hell is Douglas?", and you're not wrong to do that. Douglas has spent three of his four years under the radar, and hasn't impressed a lot in his first season in the "big leagues", so to speak. His signing surprised pretty much 110% of the people, and there's still a lot of work to be done in terms of finding out who Douglas is.

So don't worry, Barça Blaugranes has got you covered! From now on, read a comprehensive scouting report on the Brazilian, and get an idea of how good he is -- or isn't -- and what he brings to the table in terms of the future. So get ready, here we go!

Now, before we start, I have to be honest with you guys. When some of you asked me about who Douglas was, I was a little biased. I'm a diehard São Paulo FC fan, and São Paulo FC fans simply hate Douglas, just by the sake of hating him. There's no real reason to, we just decided to hate him because we are stupid diehard fans. When I was asked about the rumor, I gave the "hater" response, because I never thought it would materialize. I thought to myself "there's no way Barça is buying Douglas", and I just made fun of him, as you can see below:

I'm sorry, I was a little harsh on Douglas, but it wasn't sincere. I wasn't even thinking about the guy, just making fun. From now on, this is serious. This is what I actually think of the guy.

Okay, let's get this out of the way: Douglas is not terrible. Not even poor. Not even bad. He is, actually, pretty good. At Goiás, his first club, he was a MACHINE of attacking from the right side. He was unstoppable, and one of the main reasons his team was always at the top of Brazil's league tables. He was protected enough to the point where defending was not really a priority, so going forward is his main quality.

Moving from Goiás to São Paulo FC, one of the five biggest Brazilian clubs, Douglas had to deal with the pressure of being the first great right-back since Cicinho -- remember, the one who played at Real Madrid with Robinho and at Roma, among others? -- so he had to meet unrealistic expectations. São Paulo fans never got behind him, mostly because they are skeptical of everybody who plays there, except Rogério Ceni, their legendary goalie, and Kaká, because he began his career there. Everyone else has to gain the people's love, and it's not easy.

Back to Douglas: His tenure at São Paulo was a decent to good one. He never became a star, because he is not meant to be one. He is a complementary piece. You can't expect much of him, because he doesn't want the spotlight. He likes to do his thing and not get in the way of others.

These are the intangibles. Now, the more evident stuff. Douglas is a really good offensive player. He is pretty much a winger when the team is on attack, and he will make cuts to the box so he can receive long passes from the midfielders. Once he has the ball, he ALWAYS looks to pass and set up his teammates. He doesn't attempt a crazy shot, or dribble, or fancy moves. He plays within himself, doing the best possible play.

Douglas is a good, reliable passer, with a 82% career accuracy, with an average of 44 passes a game -- at São Paulo, his touches per game went up to almost 60. Compared to Dani Alves and Montoya, the other two Barça right-backs, Douglas is a better passer, creates more opportunities for others and has a better offensive accuracy in terms of attempts to the goal. Even his crosses are more accurate.

When he gets chances to play at Barça, if he does it with the first team, Douglas is pretty much perfect for the system. Barça plays with a 3-man back-line while on offense, with Sergio Busquets dropping off to be closer to the center-backs. That gives the full-backs a lot more freedom than they had before. The signing of Rakitic was vital to keep the engine functioning. If a full-back goes too deep into the attack, Ivan and Iniesta will defend the sides, while the team already has three man on defense. If Douglas plays, he has more freedom to attack. That's what he does best, and that fits perfectly into Luis Enrique's scheme.

Montoya is a defensive right-back; Alves is a ultra-offensive one that takes too many risks. Douglas is in the middle. He's a decent defender when needed, yet an above-average offensive back who doesn't try too much. You might find it crazy, but Douglas is a younger version of Dani Alves. Alves matured at Barça, but he was exactly what Douglas is right now: an insane attacker, perfect for the Barça system, who just needs time to learn the Camp Nou ropes.

Of course, Dani is a better player. You don't become a Barcelona legend everyday. Douglas is not on his level. Yet. But he has the ingredients. Luis Enrique approved his signing immediately, so he's seeing something in Douglas than most fail to see.

As a São Paulo fan, I got to see Douglas play every Wednesday and Sunday since 2013. Believe me, he's good enough to play at Barcelona. If he develops, this can be the greatest steal of Barça's recent history. He'll have at least one year to learn, training alongside Alves. He'll learn from one of the best teachers ever at his position. Once Dani goes away, Douglas will possibly be ready to be the next great Brazilian right-back in Barça history.

Yes, that sentence seems a little crazy. But isn't this signing crazy in the first place?

FC Barcelona and Rest of Group F React to Champions League Draw

Different points of view.

FC Barcelona's Road to Berlin starts with a tricky group stage, as the Catalan side has been drawn with Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax and APOEL at the UEFA event on Thursday.

Representatives from all four teams spoke right after the draw, and they have different views on their chances to move on to the knockout phase. Here's what they said.

Andoni Zubizarreta, FC Barcelona Sporting Director:

"The PSG matches will be spectacular. We'll be playing a huge institution and a great team.

We'll play three completely different styles, and that will be a challenge for us. All of the matches should be tough, and all 32 teams have equal chances of winning."

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, Paris Saint-Germain Director:

"We have been getting better every year, and I feel like this season we are stronger than before. This is our third straight UCL appearance, we are very motivated and I think we can get through the quarter-finals. Barcelona is always a difficult rival, but we are confident."

Laurent Blanc, Paris Saint-Germain Coach:

"Barcelona needs no introduction. You already know it is one of the greatest teams in the world. That's why both matches are going to be decided in the details. We have to pick our spots and take advantage of their mistakes. We need to be efficient.

Ajax is a team with great youngsters, and they have dominated their league for many years, you can't take them for granted.

APOEL is a team that has played in Europe for many years, but we need to win all six points against them."

Constantinos Charalambides, APOEL captain: "This is a very tough draw for us. We face three sides with rich traditions in world football, but we still see this as a great moment for us. It will be a challenging experience for the players, the coaching staff, the board and of course our fans."

Frank de Boer, Ajax coach: "When our goal is to reach the next stage, it is tough when you draw Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. With these teams it will be very difficult to finish first or second in the group."

Barça starts their quest for a fifth Champions League title on September 17, at Camp Nou, against APOEL.
