Samper suffers more injury misery

The youngster has a calf problem

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Samper suffered yet more injury misery as he picked up a calf problem in the Copa del Rey clash at Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday.

Samper was forced off in the first half with the problem, with Carles Alena coming on to take his place.

The 23-year-old looked really upset on the bench, understandably so, and will have tests to determine the severity of the injury on Thursday.

Samper has had more than his fair share of injuries already in his career and really deserves a break. Let’s hope his latest setback is only minor, and he’s back soon.

WATCH: Messi looking good back in training

The captain enjoyed himself on Wednesday

Lionel Messi was back at Barcelona on Wednesday and certainly seemed to have missed being out on the training field.

There was no hiding the big grin on his face as he was put through his paces for the first time since breaking his arm against Sevilla.

Check out the skipper back in action:

There’s no clear idea of exactly when he return to first-team action, but it’s fair to say that Barcelona have coped pretty well without the GOAT so far.

Cultural Leonesa 0-1 Barcelona: Review

Recap of play from Barcelona’s win against Cultural in the Copa del Rey

To start their Copa del Rey campaign Barcelona displayed a rather poor showing in Leon but when the final whistle blew the Catalans were victorious with the only goal coming from Clement Lenglet in added time.

With the majority of the stars staying home, this was an opportunity for fringe players to get their foot in the door and numerous youngsters to showcase their potential. Ousmane Dembele and Nelson Semedo were the only two (semi-)regulars to start the match, while three B team players, Juan Miranda, Chumi and Jorge Cuenca also featured in the starting XI.

Barcelona started the match with strong intentions, quickly pinning Cultural Leonesa deep, but the Catalans couldn’t create anything noteworthy in the opening minutes. The hosts threatened for the first time in the 10th minute, but Jasper Cillessen went untested. Two minutes later, Semedo turned the ball over deep to gift a chance to Zelu who fired on goal, but was denied by a diving Cillessen. Even with a cool 75% ball possession it were the hosts who were the first to really threaten while Barcelona struggled in attack against the aggressive hosts.

The midfield of Sergi Samper, Denis Suarez and Arturo Vidal was having problems organizing Barcelona in attack. Their opponents, however, always looked threatening when in attack, but their next scoring chance which came in the 26th minute also left Cillessen without having to make a save.

Quickly thereafter, Ernesto Valverde sent two midfielders to start warming up on the sidelines. In the 32nd minute Samper had to be taken of the pitch with an apparent injury and was replaced by the promising Carles Alena. With Alena pulling the strings Barcelona started showing some life in attack, but getting anywhere near Jorge Palatsi’s goal remained a daunting task.

Most of Barcelona’s problems were self-inflicted as terrible ball security, poor passing and almost no energy plagued the Catalans and the two sides went into the break scoreless. Barcelona started playing better after Alena joined play, but he himself could not lift his almost lifeless teammates.

The Catalans came ready to play after the restart, attacking from the get-go, quickly causing some problems to the Cultural defense, but the hosts would repel those attacks and again be the first to fire a shot on goal, but once again Cillessen made the save. The shot was Cultural’s second on target while Barcelona were still without a single one. Barcelona were pressing high up the pitch, but the results weren’t always there.

At the one-hour mark, Valverde made his second substitution as Lenglet replaced Cuenca in the heart of the defense. Moments later Alena won a free kick in a dangerous area, about 30-yards out straight down the middle, but Dembele’s attempt went very high and very wide. Two minutes later Cillessen was called into action again, making a save on Zelu’s free kick try.

Even though Barcelona were regularly on the attack, the lack of conviction was worrying - especially considering these were players looking to impress the manager after getting few minutes with the first team. Finally, in the 71st minute, Barcelona fired on goal, with Alena testing Palatsi from distance, causing some problems to the goalkeeper in the process.

Five minutes later the hosts created their best looking chance of the match, with Cillessen having to make two saves in quick succession. First, the Dutchman had to stop a corner kick that went right on goal before tipping Saul Gonzalez’s 20-yards howitzer over the crossbar. With ten minutes left to play, Arthur replaced Malcom, who one would not have noticed on the pitch had he not turned the ball over pretty much every single time he was in possession of it.

Barcelona finally had a good look on goal in the 86th minute when Alena brilliantly set up Munir El Haddadi, heading the ball right into his feet after a cross from the left side. But even with time and space the forward couldn’t get a shot on target, sending the ball well over the bar. But Barcelona’s persistence finally paid off in the first minute of added time. Dembele sent a deep free kick into the danger area where Lenglet escaped his marker and flicked the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net for his first goal in Blaugrana colors.

On the final play of the match Barcelona could’ve added another to their total, but Denis Suarez – in arguably his only noteworthy play – just missed the far post on the counter attack. The small margin of victory has not quite yet guaranteed a spot in the next round though and the return leg will be played in early December at the Camp Nou. Now it’s back to La Liga where the Catalans will take on Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

Cultural Leonesa 0-1 Barcelona: Late Win

The defender scored his first goal for Barcelona

Barcelona secured a late win at Cultural Leonesa in the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday thanks to substitute Clement Lenglet’s first goal for the club.

Ernesto Valverde named a much-changed XI as expected. He handed first-team debuts to Juan Miranda, Jorge Cuena and Chumi. There were also starts for Denis Suarez, Sergi Samper and Malcom.

FIRST HALF

Barcelona saw plenty of the ball in the first half, but they didn’t really trouble Palatsí in the Cultural Leonesa goal. They also suffered a blow in the opening 45 minutes, as Samper was forced off with yet another injury. Carles Alena took his place in the team, while Samper sat on the bench looking pretty distraught. The closest we came to a goal was a Cultural Leonesa shot which forced Jasper Cillessen into a diving save.

There were lots of sloppy moments too. Nelson Semedo and Malcom were both guilty of giving the ball away, Juan Miranda picked up a booking, while Denis Suarez was struggling to make any impression at all. There were a few pretty hefty challenges from the hosts, but they deserved to go in at the break on level terms.

SECOND HALF

The first chance of the second half came courtesy of the hosts after Alena had given the ball away. Ortiz raced forwards on the counter and beat Arturo Vidal, but his shot was comfortably saved by Cillessen.

Barca were still toiling as an attacking force. An Alena shot on goal after 71 minutes was pretty much the first thing Palatsi was forced to do. Meanwhile, Cillessen was forced into a quick double save at the other end. He pushed away a corner at his near post and then tipped over a fierce strike from Saul.

Valverde was looking pretty frustrated on the touchline. He sent on Lenglet and Arthur in the second half but still Barcelona found it tough going.

Barca finally managed to carve out a decent chance with five minutes of normal time remaining. Denis crossed for Alena, who nodded it down to Munir, but the striker could only blast over.

The game looked destined to be heading for a goalless draw, until Ousmane Dembele dinked in a free-kick and Lenglet headed the winner from Palatsi. Advantage Barca.

Cultural Leonesa: Palatsí; Saúl (Alonso), Escalante, González, Bernal; Romero (Calvo), Marcos, Beltrán, Aridane; Ortiz, Zelu (Rodríguez)

Barcelona: Cillessen; Semedo, Cuenca (Lenglet), Chumi, Miranda; Vidal, Samper (Alena), Denis; Dembélé, Munir, Malcom (Arthur)

Goal: Lenget, 90

Luis Suárez: It’s Normal for Barcelona to Start Looking for My Successor

Suárez admitted that at his age he’s not surprised Barcelona would be thinking about his eventual replacement

FC Barcelona hat trick hero Luis Suárez has said he is not surprised to think that his club is already looking for his successor.

“That Barcelona are looking for a nine... it’s normal. I’m already 31 years old,” he told Uruguayan radio station Sport890.

The forward was asked if he was bothered by rumors that his club was in the market for a forward, but he insisted that he was not concerned.

Despite being the beneficiary of a VAR decision in Barcelona’s 5-1 dismantling of Real Madrid, Suárez expressed ambivalence about video review.

“You lose a spark,” he said, “at even the slightest doubt defenders raise their hands and the forward doesn’t celebrate because of possible doubts. Later if they give you the goal as valid, you don’t do it anymore. The adrenaline of celebrating a goal is divine, and VAR takes those little things away.”

In addition, referees don’t take action even when they see a clear penalty, he argues, because they know VAR will take care of it for them.

“We have to get used to not arguing so much with the refs, not arguing against them, because that’s why we have VAR. Without discussion,” Suárez finished.

Malcom responds to speculation he’s asked to leave

The Brazilian has given his view

Malcom has responded to a report in Mundo Deportivo that he has asked to leave the club in January due to a lack of game time.

The Brazilian has taken to social media to offer his view on his current situation in an Instagram story post.

“Regarding some news published in Spain, I want to clarify that I came to Barcelona with many objectives and those that know me know that I am a really determined person,” he said.

”I am happy with my evolution in my career and my dreams become a reality with each passing day. My family are also well adapted in the city. In summary, I am going to keep fighting for everything I desire from my career.”

Malcom is expected to start Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash against Cultural Leonesa and will be handed a rare to chance impress.

He’s hardly had a look-in since arriving from Bordeaux over the summer, but it seems the speculation he’s already looking for an exit is a little wide of the mark.

Neymar and His Parents, Plus Bartomeu & Rosell All Threatened With Prison Time Over Corruption

The fallout over the Brazilian star’s messy transfer to Barcelona continues

Paris-Saint Germain star Neymar, along with his mother and father, and the current and former FC Barcelona presidents - Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell - have been threatened with prison time by Spanish authorities over corruption stemming from his controversial move from Santos to Barça. Both clubs are also being threatened with fines.

A panel made up of three judges will preside over the case of Neymar and Bartomeu, who are charged with deceiving the company DIS, who had 40% of the player’s rights.

The Brazilian company feel cheated by all four men over the signing of the player to the Catalans in 2013. They reportedly want a five year prison sentence for Neymar, his father, and Bartomeu, along with a 195 million euro fine for the club.

According to Diario MARCA, the state is seeking a two-year prison sentence for Neymar and a ten million euro fine, as well as a five year sentence for Rosell, who is currently in custody for another case of fraud. Bartomeu is not being threatened by the state as far as prison time, but Barcelona are being threatened with a fine of 8.4 million and Santos with a 7 million fine. The government also seeks a two-year prison sentence for Neymar, Sr., and one year for Neymar’s mother, as well as a 1.4 million fine to the family company N&N.

In addition, AFP reported that Spanish judge José María Vázquez Honrubia told Neymar that his prison time “in principle, could be between four and six years.”

The crime all parties involved are accused of is colluding to hide the real cost of the transfer, in order to defraud DIS of their fair share of the player’s fee. No one has been declared guilty of this as of now.

Barcelona-Real Madrid: El Clásico Tactics

Lopetegui got it wrong to start, but his changes almost turned the match around - only for Valverde’s own changes to tip the favor back to Barça

Barcelona battered Real Madrid 5-1, although the game was a strange one because Madrid looked like they were inevitably going to pull the scores level when they were losing 2-1. It’s hard to recall a match more clearly going in such distinct phases, or indeed, one in which tactical switches midway from both managers made such a clear impact on the course of the match.

Selection

Ernesto Valverde was without Lionel Messi and Samuel Umtiti, and in their place, selected Rafinha and Clément Lenglet. The Frenchman’s inclusion was no surprise, as he was the only fit centerback available. But Rafinha was a surprise - at least prior to his inclusion in the starting XI against Inter Milan earlier. Valverde could have used Ousmane Dembélé or Arturo Vidal in the starting XI, or indeed Malcom, had he prepped either one by making them a starter against Inter.

Barça tried to sell Rafinha off to Inter and Betis in the summer, with both clubs balking at the asking price. How strange it was for him to start this match, although it gave the side some symmetry. With Philippe Coutinho now fielded as a left winger, Rafinha is sort of his mirror. Both provoke debate about whether they are best fielded as midfielders or wingers in a 4-3-3. Of course, Rafinha is not as good as his compatriot, but the instructions were similar. Tuck in and combine, and allow your fullback to bomb forward and overlap.

Meanwhile, Julen Lopetegui fielded a familiar XI, without Dani Carvajal through injury. He chose Nacho to play in his place, somewhat strange given the amount of money spent on Álvaro Odriozola, a natural right-back.

First Half Dominance

Barcelona quickly identified the match-up problem. Primarily a centerback, Nacho is not blessed with pace to play as a fullback. On the other hand, Jordi Alba has loads of it. With Gareth Bale operating on the right-wing and given license to roam, he was not always particularly prepared to help defend overloads. The vulnerability was clear.

With 10 minutes gone, Barcelona had the ball. Lenglet found Coutinho, retreating into midfield to help build play. Nacho followed him and pressured him. Casemiro dropped into the right-back zone to cover as Coutinho passed it back to Ivan Rakitić. Nacho retreated to his spot and Casemiro dropped off, looking to cover Coutinho.

At the same time, Alba was preparing a darting run. Bale retreated and pointed, as if instructing Nacho to cover the area he was unwilling to cover himself. Nacho floated towards Alba, but Alba was at a full head of steam, and Nacho was not. And Alba is just naturally faster. Rakitić found Alba expertly with a looping ball over the top. Alba brought it down well and had the presence of mind to ignore the obvious target - Luis Suárez - and instead look for another option. Coutinho strode into the box unmarked, with Casemiro not bothering to rush back to cover him. He finished with no pressure and it was 1-0 to Barcelona.

The second goal was somewhat similar. Coutinho and Alba were creating easy overloads against poor Nacho. Bale was nowhere to be seen, and Luka Modrić was too unwilling to leave the center - where he is more effective anyways - to give his right-back proper support. Nacho was forced to ease off, lest he get beaten with no cover. Alba then was able to attempt a ground cross, that Suárez was first to, quite cleverly drawing a foul - and a clear penalty - from Raphaël Varane. VAR eventually gave it, and the Uruguayan slotted in the penalty.

Barcelona kept trying the recipe, and Alba was often in acres of space, and a couple of times it looked like Barça would continue scoring from his crosses. A lot of the blame will be shunted on Bale for not providing defensive support, but how often did Cristiano Ronaldo run back and defend his fullback? The answer is rarely. Yet Bale was being asked to do work on the offensive half like Ronaldo. Truthfully the rest of the team pressed equally as disjointedly, often caught in positions where they did not defend anyone, and letting the hole on the flank go unplugged. Nacho was burned, but it was hardly his fault as he was simply overwhelmed by Coutinho and Alba working in tandem.

Rafinha did not have the greatest of matches but he often moved towards the center or to the left, which again created overloads for Alba and Coutinho. He also helped Barcelona in the press and getting back into defense.

Madrid sat narrow, hoping to contain Barcelona’s narrow wingers. But Lopetegui seemed to not give anyone the task of tracking what happened when both the wingers and the fullbacks moved forward. Either Modrić or Bale should have been helping Nacho. And if they were somehow occupied, Isco, Toni Kroos, or Casemiro should have covered. But this often didn’t happen. It wasn’t only on the left, often Roberto was given clear license to motor forward. But Barcelona saw a more obvious mismatch in Alba vs. Nacho, and also, this meant going to Coutinho’s side rather than Rafinha’s.

No plan to cover Alba, who is in red-hot form and is on his worst day still one of the elite fullbacks in world football, is a basic and embarrassing flaw in the team Lopetegui set out.

Madrid Fight Back

At halftime, Varane was taken off due to injury, and to his credit, Lopetegui took the chance to adjust not just his personnel but his entire system. He put in Lucas Vázquez and moved to a 3-4-3, with Casemiro and Nacho in central defense alongside Sergio Ramos. In effect, this gave the team two things: one, in attack, Bale and Isco could work the inside channels with Vázquez and Marcelo on the flanks. In defense, it seemed to clear up the defensive responsibilities, as there was a back five (including the wingbacks) that couldn’t be easily overloaded on the flanks.

Madrid got their first goal through the wingbacks, first with Vázquez in space finding Isco working the inside channel, and eventually Marcelo getting the finish.

Madrid employed a very risky strategy with a very high press, and it paid dividends then, not only in the goal, but in the following minutes. Barcelona had a lot of problems retaining the ball, either losing it while trying to get out of defense or booting it long. So long as Madrid either kept the home side pinned back, or was afforded time to set their back five, they were reasonably protected and able to pile pressure on.

Marcelo got into more crossing opportunities, and one was headed over the bar by Ramos. Isco and Bale looked more comfortable cutting in and combining, and one time one of their combinations led to a chance for Modrić to hit the post.

Then it was Suárez’s turn to hit the post, although if that had gone in, it would have been against the run of play. Rafinha tried to dribble out of two challenges in his own box, leading to a chance for Madrid which was eventually ruled offside. Still, it showed the desperation for Barcelona to try to retain possession and get some breathing room that Rafinha thought he couldn’t just punt it long.

Vázquez and his energy and pace on the flank continued to be a problem for Barça, and it was almost a mirror image of the first half when Jordi Alba went up to challenge Isco, only for Isco to find Vázquez in loads of space. His cross to Benzema was great, but the striker put a very good chance over the bar. Nacho was not the player to make these runs, and more than that, he had no license to. With Lopetegui throwing caution to the wind, these kinds of situations were starting to accumulate. Madrid looked like they would equalize.

Barcelona Kill the Game Off

Valverde made two important substitutions afterwards. He took off Rafinha and Coutinho in quick succession, replacing them with Nélson Semedo and Ousmane Dembélé. The manager has sometimes been wary of making changes too quickly this season, but this time he saw his team was getting overwhelmed. He injected pace into the side as well as fresh players, and crucially as well, he allowed Roberto to go up and play as a winger.

With Madrid pressed up so high, their vulnerability was the counterattack. Once Barcelona were able to break through the initial pressure, there weren’t too many white shirts around. Dembélé received a ball behind the halfway line and started charging up, seeing it was essentially a three-on-three breakaway. He found Roberto, Roberto clipped in a ball that somewhat fortuitously got to Suárez, who with an unorthodox but brilliant header made it 3-1.

This only multiplied Madrid’s desperation, and time and again Barcelona had opportunities to counter. Still, the way they scored next wasn’t exactly a counterattack, though it was influenced by the fact Madrid was pushed up so high. A long ball from defense should have been cleared by Ramos, and he made a dreadful mistake which allowed Roberto to win the ball and set up Suárez’s hat trick goal. But Ramos was completely alone, and when he made his mistake, there was Roberto and there was Suárez and no one else.

The introduction of Arturo Vidal for Arthur just gave the team another energy boost, someone to perhaps still be getting into the box for crosses in the 86th minute. It was not a counterattack situation, at this point Madrid were too far behind to be too bothered about being desperately pressed up high. But it was still based around the fact that Barcelona looked like they had a lot of energy, both from the subs, and feeding off the frenzied crowd.

In the end, 5-1 was a flattering scoreline to Barcelona. Madrid actually took slightly more shots, which is odd given that they lost so heavily. Understat showed an xG advantage of 3.15 to 2.15 for Barcelona - a good number for them, but far from a 5-1 win. However, taking the phases of the match into account, it’s clear Barcelona dominated between 0 and 45 minutes, and then between 70 and 90 minutes. Madrid took that period between 45 and 70, or in other words, a bit less than a third of the match. The overall impression of the match was colored by Barcelona battering Madrid for most of the match, with Madrid’s resistance looking basically like a blip in the long run.

Lopetegui misfired in his initial selection and instructions, leaving Nacho hopelessly lost against Alba and Coutinho. But he rectified it bravely in the second half, with a unorthodox substitution. However, his team was let down by poor finishing, and once Valverde reacted, they were cut open by a refreshed team. Valverde deserves credit for getting his initial tactics right, and also for his response to the changing of the game’s state. If there’s any criticism to give him, it’s that he could have reacted quicker to the situation, making adjustments as soon as his team was in trouble. That’s nitpicking, because his substitutions worked effectively and his team seemed mentally prepared both in the good times and in times of adversity.

Malcom asks to leave in January - report

The Brazilian wants more minutes

Malcom may have only been at Barcelona a few short months, but the Brazilian is already eyeing the exit door, according to the latest speculation.

Mundo Deportivo report that Malcom spoke to Ernesto Valverde after returning from international duty and asked to leave in January if his current situation does not improve.

The 21-year-old has managed just 25 minutes of first-team action for Barcelona this season, although he is expected to start their Copa del Rey tie against Cultural Leonesa.

Valverde apparently told Malcom that he’d done nothing wrong, and the only reason he wasn’t playing was because of the strong competition for places at the club.

However, Malcom appears to be frustrated with his lack of game time and wants to leave if he does not see more action between now and the opening of the winter transfer window.

It’s not clear if Malcom wants a loan or a permanent deal. It seems unlikely Barcelona will want to sell a player they spent €41m on in July, but then again Yerry Mina only managed seven months at the club before being sold.

The report reckons that plenty of clubs have already expressed an interest in Malcom, so if Barca do allow him to leave he should not lack of options.

Welcome to the Copa del Rey! The Spanish Cup has already started a while ago, but the Round of 32 is the phase where the top La Liga teams join the party, which includes Barcelona. The four-time defending champions are the all-time winners of this competition and could do something really special by winning it five years in a row.

Of course this isn’t the trophy we all want, but you can’t win a Treble without the Copa del Rey. And after the wins over Sevilla, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, winning a Treble doesn’t sound so crazy. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and take it one game at a time. The next one is in the Copa against Third Division side Cultural Leonesa, and Ernesto Valverde will use this opportunity to rest his main players and give chances to reserves and youngsters.

Because every round of the Spanish Cup but the Final is somehow still played over two legs, the result of Wednesday’s game doesn’t matter that much. Barça don’t really need to score all the goals and play that well, but they should. They’re facing a team two divisions below them and the Barça players starting this one won’t get many chances in the league or Champions League. They must prove their worth, play well and win big. We’ll find out if they can.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Cillessen; Semedo, Chumi, Cuenca, Miranda; Vidal, Samper, Denis; Dembélé, Munir, Malcom

Leonesa (4-2-3-1): Palatsí; Saúl, Alonso, Romero, Viti; Yeray, Marcos; Liberto, Samu, Rodríguez; Ortiz

PREDICTION

I do not know how good Leonesa are, but I do know Barça are way better, and the guys starting this one will be really hungry: 3-0 to the champions.

Messi is my idol in football, says Neymar

The Brazilian says he learnt a lot from the Barcelona star

Neymar has been talking about Lionel Messi in a piece he’s done with Steph Curry for the Players’ Tribune.

The Brazilian spoke about what it was like to play and train with Messi and also how he’s learnt from the Barcelona captain.

“I played with Messi, who is, for me, one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he is my idol in football,” he said.

“With Messi, I learned every day, whether during our practice, or playing with him, or just watching him play. That made me stronger and it increased my capacity on the field because I kept learning a lot from him.

”As for Cristiano, he is a monster. Facing him is a pleasure and an honour, but we have to be more prepared. He is one of the greatest in football, so you get smarter, you get alert, but at the same time you learn a lot, too.

”So, they are two of the big guys that I can relate to, because I want to learn, I want more, I want to win, I want more trophies, score more goals. So, I keep learning from them every day.”

Neymar has been linked with a move back to Barcelona in recent weeks. President Josep Maria Bartomeu has said the club have no plans to re-sign their former star but that’s not stopped the speculation.

The latest reports have claimed Messi wants Neymar back at the Camp Nou and that Barcelona could be willing to use Ousmane Dembele as part of any potential deal.

Valverde talks Copa del Rey, Cillessen and Barcelona B

The cup head to Cultural Leonesa on Wednesday

Ernesto Valverde has been talking all things Copa del Rey in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

The Barcelona boss didn’t give too much away about his team selection, but he did confirm Jasper Cillessen is fit enough to start and that we should also expect some B teamers.

Here are the best bits:

Valverde on the Copa del Rey

The cup is a very important competition. I don’t understand the idea of not going for one tournament to focus on another.

We need to avoid surprises and play a good game because our opponents will be playing at 200%,

We are expecting a rival who will try to play well, taking the ball from behind. They can count on the enthusiasm of the crowd, and it’s a difficult game for us in that sense.

The opponent has a lot to win, it’s a massive game for them.

Valverde on his potential line-up

We’ll be using some players that don’t get to play as much and there are high hopes pinned on them.

It’s possible that we will play with two centre backs from the B team, because Piqué and Lenglet are carrying the burden of the lot of playing time, but the competition rules restrict us.

I know we can play up to four [B team players at the same time], but then if there is an injury, we have to make two substitutions, because you can be confused by the rules... We will see.

Valverde on Cillessen

He’s fine. He had a bad day yesterday but he’s OK today and will play tomorrow. We’re very happy with him and the game will do him good.

Copa del Rey: Malcom’s Time to Prove Himself

The Barcelona winger has not played much but he can start making his case soon

Malcom has not played much this season, to say the least. The winger was Barcelona’s most expensive transfer in this past summer, but he’s only logged 25 minutes in La Liga so far, even with Lionel Messi’s injury.

With even Ousmane Dembélé struggling for playing time, how does his understudy fit into Ernesto Valverde’s system?

The Brazilian will get a good chance to make his case as he’s expected to start tomorrow against Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa in the Copa del Rey.

The third-tier side are not expected to be a huge challenge but the winger should make sure he’s at his best as he makes the case to Valverde that he deserves more minutes. Several other players, including B-teamers, will be trying to make the same impression.

Malcom was wrestled from AS Roma at the last second in the summer transfer window. His mother even boarded the flight to Rome in anticipation of his signing with the capital club, but instead, he changed his mind at the last minute to join up with Barça. The Brazilian took a chance by going to a club in which he would be given more competition for playing time. His ambition has yet to pay off, but fans know he has the potential to be an electrifying player for years to come. They will be anxious for him to put a stamp on an official match for the first time in a Barcelona shirt.

Barca rule out Dembele leaving in January - report

Speculation over the Frenchman continues

Some good news for Ousmane Dembele fans, Barcelona have ruled out an exit for the Frenchmen in January. There have been rumors that Dembele was a possibility to leave the club due to lack of playing time.

Ernesto Valverde hasn’t played the winger nearly as much as some, including myself, believe he should be playing. Despite scoring five goals in only nine appearances he just hasn’t caught the eye of Valverde consistently.

Signing Dembele for €105m just last year makes it tough to justify selling him this early on. Diario Sport is reporting that he’ll be staying at least past the winter transfer window.

Because of the amount of money Barcelona paid for Dembele it seems the realism of selling him and making their money back just isn’t in the cards yet.

La Liga president open to naming trophy after Lionel Messi

The Barcelona star could have a trophy named after him

La Liga president Javier Tebas was asked about naming a La Liga trophy after Barcelona star Lionel Messi. The La Liga chief seemed open to the idea and further complimented Messi’s place in history.

“I like that idea, we would have to think about,” he said.

”I think Messi will be the best in football history, he already is.

”Some people talk about Neymar but he is already 26 years old and as far as I remember Messi started to play for Barcelona as a youngster and he surprises us every year he seems not to have limits and he plays at a maximum level.

”He is the best and I think it’s a great idea to create a trophy for the best player every season named [after] Leo Messi.

”If it is Zarra for the best scorer…I think it’s a great idea.”

Javier Tebas | Source

A Messi award would be something special if it were to happen. The joy of watching a Real Madrid player win the Lionel Messi trophy someday and having the Messi trophy in the Bernabéu would be fantastic.

How will Barca line up against Cultural Leonesa?

Umtiti could return against Atletico

The defender is still out with knee trouble

Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti could make his return from injury in the club’s La Liga clash at Atletico Madrid on November 24.

The France international has been out of action since September, but Barcelona have posted footage recently of him running on sand at the training ground.

AS are reporting that Umtiti is set to step up his training programme, and if all goes well he will be close to a return to first-team action.

It’s not quite as clear-cut as all that though, the report also states that the club have not yet ruled out surgery for Umtiti.

The trip to Atletico comes after the next international break and could prove key in the title race. Diego Simeone’s team are in fourth but just two points behind Barcelona.

In the meantime, Clement Lenglet will continue alongside Gerard Pique in defence. The Frenchman has looked good recently and seems to be adapting to life well at the Camp Nou.

Gerard Piqué Told Barcelona Fans to Stop Abusing Sergio Ramos

The ultras were branding Ramos a “son of a...”

Gerard Piqué defended Sergio Ramos when the Real Madrid captain was receiving abuse from Barcelona ultras during el clásico. The fans at the Camp Nou were chanting, “Sergio Ramos, son of a bitch” at the defender. Piqué was pictured waving his finger in a “no” gesture, trying to get them to stop.

Piqué and Ramos, despite being rivals for a long time at club level, were teammates in the Spanish national team for years as well. Piqué himself has been the subject of abuse from different fans. The Catalan defender has even been insulted by Spain fans during international matches.

Ramos, who has captained Spain recently, told reporters last year that he asked Spain fans not to whistle or insult Piqué or any one of his teammates. The one difference is that while Ramos did it in the context of defending a teammate, Piqué did it in the context of defending a rival.

In any case, both players have drawn plaudits for their commitment to fair play in those cases.

Barcelona Waltz Through “Month from Hell”

October was hyped as a month-long massive headache

With a 5-1 thrashing of Real Madrid, Barcelona have completed a set of fixtures so difficult that some fans had October down as a “month from hell.” Valverde’s men, even at times without Lionel Messi, have gone through these matches in scintillating fashion.

It started with an away trip to face Tottenham Hotspur on the 3rd, then another away match, this time against Valencia in La Liga 4 days later. Next came league-leading Sevilla on the 20th, and then Inter Milan on the 24th, before el clásico on the 28th. Given Barcelona’s irregular form, and the eventual absence of Messi, these could have been some very dire moments.

Instead, Barça won every match bar one, and every one of those wins came with at least a two goal advantage.

Barça do have one more match left this month, on the last day of October. But that’s in the Copa del Rey against lowly Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa. Of course, anything could happen, but it would be a massive surprise if the third-tier side can get a result against even a heavily-rotated Barcelona.

The team blew away Tottenham 4-2 at Wembley thanks in large part to a superhuman Messi performance. Then, Barça had to labor to draw 1-1 against Valencia, with Messi scoring the leveler. Messi carried on his super form against Sevilla; the Argentine star scored one and assisted another inside twelve minutes. But with less than half an hour gone, Messi injured his arm and had to go off. Up to this point, the team’s fortunes were entirely dependent on Messi. And while the blaugrana did enough to win the match 4-2, there was a genuine question of how they would cope in his absence.

But Valverde’s men continued on their upward trajectory, with Rafinha in the lineup, against Inter Milan. Rafinha got a deserved goal, stamping his name on the teamsheet for the Real Madrid game. Jordi Alba was sensational and scored, too, to end the match with a 2-0 victory for Barcelona.

And Barça carried that momentum into el clásico. The debates of old seemed to wither away as easily as los blancos did. The question of Semedo or Roberto seemed to be both - Roberto was great as a starter, and Semedo had great impact off the bench. Alba carried on his magnificent form. Piqué got back to his best, and Lenglet and Arthur proved they are worthy to start for Barça. The other substitutes, Ousmane Dembélé and Arturo Vidal, continued to make their case for more playing time. Ter Stegen was mostly unperturbed but did well, while Rafinha was solid. Luis Suárez was red-hot, Coutinho scored, and Busquets and Rakitić dropped masterclasses. All that, with Messi in the stands.

They said October would be full of Halloween horrors, but Barcelona were Michael Myers - indestructible..

Five things we learned from Barcelona’s win over Real Madrid

Five things we leaned from Barcelona’s win over Real Madrid

Ousmane Dembélé Told to Look for Buyers - Report

The rumor comes from the radio station RAC1

Ousmane Dembélé has been told by Barcelona to study his options in the winter transfer window, according to the radio station RAC1. The winger has been the subject of debate within the club, and according to the report, last Thursday, he was given the order to look for potential buyers.

This would have come after he was an unused substitute in Barça’s 2-0 win over Inter Milan, but before his good showing off the bench in el clásico, in which he assisted a goal against Real Madrid in a 5-1 thrashing.

There were reports last week that Dembélé had a chronic lateness problem, although sources within the club denied the rumor according to Mundo Deportivo. The player himself replied to one of the rumors on Instagram with a string of laughing emojis.

This rumor made a bit more sense after the Inter game, but after Dembélé was given the chance to come on in el clásico and he performed well, would the fans accept his sale in the winter?

He started the season as a starter and had some good showings. With depth a priority for teams wanting to win all big competitions, and Valverde pressured to rotate more than ever, why would Barça get rid of such a talent in the winter, when it’s harder to find a replacement?

His worth is always there – Valverde praises Suarez | Goal

Ernesto Valverde praised striker Luis Suarez after he scored a hat-trick in Sunday’s Clasico win over Real Madrid. The boss said: “Everybody was talking about him not scoring but because he works so hard, the consequences are the results. In the long term, that’s what he does. We win from having him in our team. I didn’t think many people were going to ask me about Luis Suarez but obviously having scored a hat-trick, his worth is always there.”

El Clasico Highlights: Barça 5, Real Madrid 1 | FC Barcelona

Barcelona enjoyed a brilliant afternoon at the Camp Nou on Sunday as they saw off Real Madrid in some style. Watch all the highlights from Sunday’s game again and again by clicking the link above.

Ivan Rakitic says Real Madrid were not very clever | Football Espana

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic stuck the boot into Real Madrid after Sunday’s win. He said: “Madrid were not very clever when they had the opportunity to equalise. We were able to get lots of bodies in the box and fight to make sure we stayed in front, then we were in a position to react.”

This was the EIGHTH time Barça have scored at least 5 past Real Madrid | Sport

Barcelona have enjoyed some big wins over bitter rivals Real Madrid. Sunday’s match was their eighth time in their history that they have put five past Los Blancos. Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick, with Philippe Coutinho and Arturo Vidal also on target.

Sergi Roberto: I would’ve liked the match to last longer | Marca

Sergi Roberto said he didn’t want Sunday’s Clasico to end. He said: “I would’ve liked the game to go on a little longer. To get a result like this in a Clasico is desirable for anyone. It reinforces our confidence to win like this without our best player and now Leo [Messi] can rest and recover well.”

Busquets says team has “taken a step forward” by winning without Messi | Busquets

Sergio Busquets spoke after the match and gave his thoughts about winning El Clasico without the injured Lionel Messi. He said: “Normally, when we’re suffering, Leo is the answer. We look for him and he gets us out of those situations. But tonight we took a step forward as a team. His (Marcelo’s) goal made us suffer but we knew that if we won back possession and hit Madrid on the counter we’d hurt them. I believe the team has become stronger because of this.”

Jordi Alba: Sometimes I enjoy assists more than goals | Marca

Jordi Alba reckons he enjoys setting up goals more than scoring them sometimes. He explained: “Sometimes I enjoy assisting more than scoring. It was a special match and Messi is always missed, he gives me passes that nobody else is capable of. We beat Inter and other rivals, but Leo is always missed.”

Pique has had a shaky start to the season but put in a much-improved display against Real Madrid alongside Clement Lenglet. However, the club still haven’t kept a clean sheet in La Liga since the win over Valladolid in August.

Barcelona 5-1 Real Madrid: Review

Recap of the action from Barcelona’s spectacular win against Real Madrid

In the first El Clasico of the 2018-19 season, Barcelona pummeled Real Madrid, scoring five goals while conceding just the one. Even with Lionel Messi on the sidelines, Real’s defense struggled to contain Barcelona’s attacks. Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring but the Catalans were led by a Luis Suarez hat-trick. Barcelona ran into some trouble early in the second half, but ultimately ran over the visitors with Arturo Vidal also scoring late in the game.

With the magnitude of the match it was expected neither manager would be doing any experimenting and that proved to be the case, with Ernesto Valverde going with Rafinha on the right side once again.

While Real Madrid would get first possession and the first attack it would be Barcelona who would open the match as the better team, quickly establishing their dominance of the ball. The Catalans were looking to quickly pin Real Madrid deep who allowed Barcelona to control the ball, but defensively they allowed very little.

But as Real attacked and opened up in the 11th minute, Barcelona launched a quick counter with Jordi Alba being sprung behind the defense by a lovely deep ball. Sprinting down the left wing the Spaniard was looking for options in the middle where Saurez was trying to get open. Showing excellent patience, Alba didn’t try to force the ball to the Uruguayan but found the completely uncovered Coutinho behind him who made no mistake - sending the ball into the unguarded net for the lead.

Barcelona continued to pile on the pressure, allowing Real very little. In the 19th minute, amid relentless deep pressure from Barcelona, Nacho Fernandez turned the ball over just outside of the penalty area, gifting a look on goal to Arthur, but his curling 20-yard effort was brilliantly saved by Thibaut Courtois. On the other end of the pitch, Real Madrid were slowly starting to show more life in attack, but Barcelona’s defense, which allowed more shots than Real had, were able to keep those shots from the distance.

In the 28th minute, Suarez was brought down in the area by Raphaël Varane. Play continued as referee José María Sánchez Martínez didn’t point to the spot, but as play stopped moments later, with assistance from VAR and a quick sidelines review, the penalty was awarded. Suarez stepped up himself and even though Courtios guessed right, the Uruguayan’s shot was too good to be saved.

Neither side created much in the remaining 15 minutes of play, though it wasn’t for the lack of trying. Both teams looked to create chances, but neither managed to do so, however, Barcelona’s attacks were more convincing, and on a couple occasions the Catalans came close to an actual chance, but the final pass just lacked a little bit of accuracy. With Real’s defensive line committing numerous turnovers Barcelona probably should’ve done more in the final minutes of the first half.

In desperate need of a positive result, Julen Lopetegui left Varane in the dressing room and replaced him with offensive threat that is Lucas Vazquez. Barcelona were quick to start the second half on the offensive, but Ivan Rakitić’s long range effort went well wide. But even though the Catalans attacked first, they would also be the first to concede. The play came down the right wing where Vazquez found Isco who sent a very dangerous ball into the middle where after a bounce it found Marcelo. With the defense scrambling, Marcelo powered the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to bring Real within one.

Buoyed by the goal, Real were attacking in numbers and Barcelona were struggling to cope with the pressure. The Catalans were living dangerously as the visitors were spending all too much time deep in the Barcelona area. Luka Modrić came within inches of tying the game at two in the 56th minute as his 20-yard shot hit the post and ricochet back across the goalmouth out of danger.

Real’s pressure was not letting up and Barcelona could not seize control of the ball. The visitors left plenty of space open for the counter-attack, but Barcelona couldn’t control the ball long enough to get anything going. Around the one-hour mark Barcelona finally made their way out of their own half before hitting the post as well in the 61st minute. Sergi Roberto headed the ball right into the path of Suarez who acrobatically fired on goal only to be denied by Courtios’ left post. Real Madrid countered quickly to continue the back and forth action, but Isco’s chance was negated by an offside call.

Barcelona would create the next scoring chance with Coutinho finding Alba inside the area for a shot, but his effort was blocked by Sergio Ramos just enough that the ball went wide of the post. In the 68th minute Karim Benzema had a fabulous opportunity to head the ball past ter Stegen after a perfect pass from Vezquez, but the Frenchman missed the target.

With the stoppage in play, Valverde brought on Nelson Semedo in place of Rafinha, resulting in Roberto moving further up the pitch. Ousmane Dembele was also getting ready to join play and he did so in the 73rd minute as he took Coutinho’s spot. The Frenchman was quickly involved as he featured prominently in a counter attack that ended with Barcelona doubling their lead in the 75th minute. Roberto seemed to miss the opportunity to find Suarez in the middle, but he nevertheless managed to do so and the Uruguayan brilliantly found the back of the net with a header.

Lopetegui then freshened up his attacking forces, bringing on Marco Asensio in place of the relatively quiet Gareth Bale. The visitors were quickly back on the attack, but Barcelona were able to fend them off. In the 82nd minute Marcelo was forced off with an injury and was replaced by attacker Mariano Diaz.

But it would matter little as Sergio Ramos would turn the ball over and Roberto would once again send Suarez into the danger area. One-on-one with the goalkeeper Suarez made no mistake, chipping the ball over Courtois for the commanding three goal lead. But the scoring would not stop there. Vidal joined play in place of Arthur immediately after the goal. In the 87th minute Dembele was sent down the left wing by Rakitić. The Frenchman effortlessly skipped past Nacho before sending a perfect cross in front where Vidal rose the highest to score his first Barcelona goal.

Just two minutes later Barcelona could’ve added another as Roberto yet again found Suarez inside the area. With the ball just a bit behind the Uruguayan, Suarez had to attempt an acrobatic shot and he did so brilliantly only to be denied by Courtois. Benzema would get the last chance of the game though, but even from an excellent spot the Frenchman couldn’t find the target.

White there were moments of panic early in the second half, Barcelona outmatched Real Madrid in this one, though the 5-1 score-line is a bit deceiving. Still, this game will go into the history books as one of those Barcelona fans will love to remember. Next up for the Catalans is the beginning of their Copa del Rey campaign.

Barça 5-1 Madrid: Spectacle

WHAT A VICTORY!!!!

Barcelona are once again top of the La Liga table thanks to a memorable 5-1 over Real Madrid in El Clásico. After a spectacular first half, a tough start to the second and an amazing finish to the game, Barça dominated most of the match and saw a Luis Suárez hat-trick give them three huge points. And Julen Lopetegui might already be searching for a new job.

FIRST HALF

From the very first second, Barça established themselves as the dominant force in the game. They were very good in possession, with all three midfielders having plenty of touches and finding the attackers in good positions. Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto were fantastic, with Alba especially being a constant threat. Madrid’s only resource were long, hopeful shots from distance that never troubled Ter Stegen.

And the goals came for Barça. First it was Ivan Rakitic who played a spectacular ball over the top to a running Jordi Alba, who took his time and made a beautiful pass to Philippe Coutinho for the opener. 20 minutes later, Raphael Varane fouled Luis Suárez inside the box, and VAR gave the penalty. Suárez took it beautifully and made it 2-0 for a dominant Barça.

The chances kept coming, but Thibaut Courtois made important saves and gave his team a little bit of hope. But at halftime, Barça were well on top thanks to a simply breathtaking performance.

SECOND HALF

Julen Lopetegui was 45 minutes away from losing his job, so he threw caution to the wind, took off Varane for Lucas Vázquez, changed formations and sent literally everyone but Courtois forward. The plan worked very quickly when Marcelo scored just five minutes into the final period. Madrid dominated after that and created chance after chance, including Karim Benzema hitting the post.

After about 15 minutes of complete pressure from Madrid, Barça recovered the ball and got more control of the game, creating chances themselves and looking a little more secure at the back. Ernesto Valverde made two changes, which made Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembélé the partners up front for Luis Suárez, and the three combined for a big third goal for Barça as Dembélé started the counter attack, Roberto made the cross, and Suárez headed the ball home.

With 15 minutes left and a two-goal lead to protect, Barça needed to keep their shape and their heads, and they did even more than that when Sergio Ramos made a hilarious mistake and gave the ball away to Sergi Roberto, who assisted Luis Suárez for a fantastic goal. There was still time for more, though, with a fifth goal scored when Ousmane Dembélé obliterated Nacho on the wing and assisted Arturo Vidal.

The final whistle came to end one of the most amazing nights in the history of El Clásico. It’s hard to forget this one. It’s impossible, actually.

Watch: Philippe Countinho finishes 30-pass sequence to give Barca 1-0 lead

Classic buildup and easy finish.

Phillipe Coutinho entered the El Clásico history books when he finished off a 30-pass sequence to give Barcelona an early 1-0 lead over Real Madrid on Sunday.

This was Coutinho’s first goal ever against Real Madrid and his second straight La Liga match with a tally. More impressive than the finish was the buildup, which showcased some classic short-passing before opening up when Ivan Rakitic put Jordi Alba into space along the left side.

From there, Coutinho only had to put away Alba’s perfect cross into a virtually empty net.
