Espanyol 0-3 Barcelona, La Liga 2017: Player Ratings

Player ratings for Barcelona’s big win against their city rivals.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

A mere spectator in the first half as Espanyol rarely attacked, but was called into action after the break, recording three saves. Had plenty of work in the passing game though as he was constantly under pressure from Espanyol forwards, but did his job very well, making more passes than just about every player on the opposing team. But unlike in most Barcelona games he was forced to make numerous long passes.

Rating: 7.0

Sergi Roberto

Looked to have injured his knee early in the game, but recovered from the knock and delivered another solid performance. Was constantly active up and down the Barcelona right flank, but especially in attack he could’ve helped out more as he missed a header that could’ve put Barcelona in the lead. After the introduction of Mascherano he moved to midfield where he ended the match.

Rating: 7.0

Samuel Umtiti

Umtiti continued to show why his transfer in the summer was the best piece of business in recent years. The Frenchman was an impenetrable wall making numerous important tackles and was a constant presence in the air game.

Rating: 8.0

Gerard Pique

Looked shaky in the early going as he struggled at times to cope with the man that is Felipe Caicedo. But Pique recovered nicely and after Caicedo was pulled to the bench, he was granted more freedom on the pitch, however, at times he was quite careless with the ball, allowing some quick Espanyol breaks. Not Pique’s worst game, but more often than not he has been upstaged by the newcomer to the Barcelona defensive ranks.

Rating: 7.0

Jordi Alba

With Barcelona going back, at least in recent games, to the four-man defense, Alba has seen his minutes increase mightily, but his performances haven’t necessarily justified the increase. It’s not that the speedster has done many things wrong, because he hasn’t, but he also hasn’t done many things right. Defensive he’s been solid, but in offense, apart from the pass in the El Clasico, he hasn’t been his usual self in attack.

Rating: 6.5

Sergio Busquets

Seemingly always under pressure when on the ball, Busquets came out mostly unscathed. He had some problems at times, but like he’s done throughout his career he was very calm under pressure. Defensively Busquets performed excellently, leading both teams in successful tackles while also putting his height to good use winning numerous aerial duels.

Rating: 7.0

Ivan Rakitić

Struggled to find consistency and form for most of the season, but recently Rakitić has been able to find both, scoring for the second time in a week, this time with a calm low shot to the far post. Otherwise was solid if unspectacular as he spent much of the game focused on defense where he, as he has so often before, played excellently.

Rating: 7.5

Andre Gomes

The difference a couple of goals can make… Chosen to replace the injured Andres Iniesta, Gomes shined, especially in the first half. He looked calm, alert and, most importantly, confident on the pitch. While his impact on the game waned as it progressed, he remained consistent on defense where he had arguably his best game in a Barcelona shirt.

Rating: 7.0

Neymar

Returning from a three game suspension, Neymar wasn’t at his very best. While the effort and energy was clearly evident, the decision making and execution was not. Tried to be a constant threat on the left side, but too often he was dispossessed or his passes missed the mark. Still, Neymar looked destined to end the game with a goal, but his curling right-footed shot was excellently tipped over.

Rating: 7.5

Luis Suarez

Wasn’t having a very good game, drawing memories from Suarez’s recent poor showings, but an errant back pass was all Luisito needed to break the duck, scoring for the first time in six games. Added another easy one late in the game after another defensive miscue by the Espanyol defense.

Rating: 8.0

Lionel Messi

Messi was played out of the game by the Espanyol defense for the most part of the game as there were seemingly always at least three defenders on the Argentine. But Messi showed in the second half that all he needs is one mistake to make the opponents pay, making a stunning run before laying the ball to Rakitić for the second goal of the game.

Rating: 8.0

Javier Mascherano

Barcelona’s newest goalscorer came on as a substitute with about 15 minutes left to play and slotted in at right-back but hardly saw any action.

Rating: N/A

Team

The first half was far from ideal for Barcelona as they often looked unmotivated – against a side that is always extra motivated against Barcelona. But the game improved in the second, but had it not been for some costly Espanyol mistakes, Barcelona could’ve been made to sweat.

Rating: 7.5

Luis Enrique

Wasn’t experimenting one bit against the city rivals, nor should he have as Espanyol always seem to cause problems. Saw the return of Neymar, but had to deal with the Iniesta injury, but wisely went with the confident Gomes.

Rating: 8.0

Rumors: Herrera to Barcelona, Roma want Suarez, Cucurella to Real Madrid?

It’s a busy day in the land of transfer talk

Herrera is Barcelona’s ‘Plan B’

Barcelona’s summer search for a replacement for Andres Iniesta is continuing and the club have a ‘Plan B’ if they fail to land top targets Marco Verratti and Phillipe Coutinho.

Don Balon’s latest bombshell claims Barca will head to Manchester United and try to tempt Ander Herrera away if their preferred options remain elusive.

Herrera has developed into one of United’s most important players this season but has caught Robert Fernandez’s eye while Ernesto Valverde would be happy to have him at Camp Nou should he replace Luis Enrique.

Real Madrid lead Cucurella chase

Marc Cucurella is a wanted man and is attracting interest from all over the continent after rejecting Barcelona’s offers of a new contract, according to Diario Gol.

Real Madrid have joined the race with Florentino Perez pondering replacements for Marcelo but face competition from Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton and Tottenham.

Roma wants Denis Suarez

Monchi has wasted no time in settling into life at Roma and is ready to test Barcelona’s resolve by enquiring about Denis Suarez.

The Giallorossi will propose a loan deal with an option to buy with Monchi knowing Suarez well after he spent a season with Sevilla in 2014/15.

Inter to rival Arsenal for Arda

Arda Turan is a popular man with Inter Milan having joined Arsenal in the race for his signature, according to Fanatik.

The Serie A side hope to have Diego Simeone in charge next season, with a huge transfer fund to play with, and Arda is the first name on his wanted list.

FC Barcelona News: 30 April 2017; Barcelona Win Catalan Derby, Barcelona B Secure League Title

RCD Espanyol – FC Barcelona: Clutch win in Cornellà (0-3) | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona scored three second-half goals — with two coming from Luis Suárez and one from Ivan Rakitic — to run away with a clutch, 3–0 victory at cross-town rivals RCD Espanyol, in Saturday night’s Catalan derby. The victory keeps Barça in first place in La Liga, even on points with Madrid but ahead on goal difference.

Luis Suárez: Intensity gave us the points | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona picked up a great win in the Catalan derby against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium thanks to two goals from Luis Suárez and one from Ivan Rakitic. The Uruguayan striker after the game revealed the key to Barça’s win. “The intensity, desire and ambition are what gave us three points. We knew it would be difficult, this kind of game is always tough because of the tension but we were relaxed playing our own football,” said Suárez.

Luis Enrique postgame quotes: RCD Espanyol 0–3 FC Barcelona | FC Barcelona
“If you play a first half like that, with rhythm and intensity, and you tire out your opponent, an opponent that can bring the pressure, and which tries to put you in compromising situations...it gave us a chance in the second half to find more space, we were able to take advantage of a miscue to go ahead on the scoreboard, and the rhythm, I believe, benefited us."

RIVAL WATCH: FC Barcelona still top of the league | FC Barcelona
They are there by virtue of their better head-to-head record against co-leaders Real Madrid, who survived a scare to beat Valencia in a game that kicked off four and a half hours earlier. Cristiano Ronaldo headed the all-whites into a first half lead, and had also missed a penalty before a Daniel Parejo free kick on 82 minutes put the sides back level.

FC Barcelona B 2-0 AE Prat: Reserves clinch top spot | FC Barcelona
With two games still to go, Barça B have been confirmed as Division 2B Group III champions following a 2-0 victory over Prat on Saturday thanks to goals from Cardona and Perea. And winning the group is not just a ‘symbolic’ honour for the reserves. It means a double chance to snap up one of the four berths on offer in next season’s second division.

Ronaldinho's masterclass in the Legends' El Clásico match | FC Barcelona
Ronaldinho was the star attraction in El Clásico in Beirut. The Brazilian star lined up for Barça Legends in a match his side won 3-2. Ronaldinho looked like he was enjoying himself as he lightened up proceedings with some magical pieces of skill and his trademark grin.

Alba: My dream is to stay at Barcelona for a long time

The defender is going nowhere this summer

Jordi Alba has dismissed talk of a move away from Barcelona at the end of the season after speculation linking him with a summer exit.

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive in recent weeks claiming Barca will sign Theo Hernandez and then look to offload Alba.

The 28-year-old has found himself on the sidelines recently due to Luis Enrique’s switch to a back three, although he did start Saturday’s 3-0 win at Espanyol.

Alba spoke after the game to address the rumours surrounding his current situation and says his ambition has always been to play for Barcelona.

"It's clear that, the more I play, the better," the Spaniard told reporters. "My dream has always been to play here and stay at Barcelona for a long time.

"We haven't spoken about it, but a footballer always wants to play and I have not played as much as I've wanted to.

"I don't want to look for excuses but at least I'm currently getting game time and I want to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey."

Alba also spoke about his lack of game time and says that while it has came as a surprise he has learnt to accept the current situation.

"Sometimes these situations all happen over your head," he added. "Not playing was unusual for me, but it matures you and makes you value things more.

"The change of system influenced things a lot. Whether I like it or not, I have to accept it."

Barcelona tired Espanyol out & forced mistakes, says Luis Enrique

It wasn’t pretty but it was another huge win

Luis Enrique says Barcelona’s high pace and intensity tired Espanyol out and allowed them to take advantage of mistakes after their 3-0 win at the Cornellà-El Prat on Saturday.

After a tight and scrappy first half the visitors had to wait until after the break to open the scoring, Luis Suarez pouncing on a poor backpass to end his recent goal drought,

Ivan Rakitic then doubled Barca’s lead before Suarez took advantage of more poor defending to wrap up the points which left Luis Enrique delighted after the game.

"We have two very clear and precise goals - the league and the cup - and we are going to go at it with everything," he told a post-match press conference.

"I am delighted with the team. In the first half, it may not have been as effective or spectacular, but we managed to wear out Espanyol.

"It was a derby with intensity on the part of the two teams, but we were very compact.

"Without that performance, there would not have been our second half. We knew if we set a high pace during the 90 minutes, we would have more chances.

"This high pace then served to make the most of their mistakes."

It may not have been the prettiest win of the season, but at this stage all that counts are the three points particularly after Real Madrid’s win over Valencia.

La Liga 2017: Three things we learned from Espanyol 0-3 Barcelona

Talking points from the Barcelona Derby.

1 - Barcelona know how to grind out wins.

Not every game can be a 6-1 or a last minute winner at the Bernabéu. Sometimes, Barcelona will have to play a significant portion of the game with just a one goal advantage. It is said the sign of a champion is to see out the difficult victories and Barcelona have become very strong in that area. Instead of sitting back and soaking up pressure, Barcelona looked to apply pressure of their own on their opponents because what is the best way to deal with a one goal advantage? Make it a two gaol advantage and then three.

2 - Luis Suárez looked a little low on confidence but his goals will boost that.

Late in the first half, Suárez broke clear to the left of the Espanyol area, he looked up but then he stuttered. He tried to slide it across to Neymar but it didn’t come off and it made you wonder why did he not shoot first time? The opportunity was definitely there for a player of his quality so does it reflect a bigger confidence problem in Suárez? He has been going through somewhat of a difficult period as of late but his two goals should be enough to push him out of that less than great run of form.

3 - Barcelona have a very strong spine in the team.

Marc-André ter Stegen - Gerard Piqué - Sergio Busquets - Lionel Messi. Those four players create the spine of the team and are crucial. Lose one and there is a significant drop in quality and cohesion in the team. Piqué and ter Stegen keeps it solid at the back, Busquets runs the midfield and Messi creates the chances. Of course, there are other quality players around them but this spine is pivotal to the team’s success.

Espanyol vs. Barcelona, La Liga 2017: Final Score 0-3, Efficient Barça win Catalan Derby

HUGE victory! HUGE!

It took a while, but Barcelona were able to break down and beat Espanyol 3-0 on Saturday to win a crucial Catalan Derby and stay alive in the La Liga title race. In what was a physical game that lacked quality, the Blaugrana were clinical and efficient to take their chances and get three key points.

FIRST HALF

The first half was really hard to watch: both teams were very physical, especially the hosts, and we saw a lot of stoppages because of fouls, players arguing and a few more fouls. Barça defended badly but slowly grew into the game, taking control of possession and moving it nicely in the final third.

Despite their domination at the end of the period, there weren't any real chances for either side, and we had a goalless draw at halftime.

SECOND HALF

The final period started with Luis Suárez ending a five-game goal drought and putting the Catalans ahead after an awful pass from an Espanyol player came straight to the Uruguayan, who couldn't miss.

The goal cemented Barça's dominance in the game, and the Blaugrana began to open the hosts up and find chances. Lionel Messi was fantastic as always and set up Ivan Rakitic for the dagger. 2-0 Barça. Suárez still got another after another Espanyol mistake and put the exclamation point in Barça's victory.

Espanyol went forward looking for something to spark life into the game, but Barça were in control and ran out the clock to confirm a giant victory that keeps them alive in the title race. We're still here, Real Madrid.

Espanyol: López; J.López, D.López, Reyes, Aarón; Jurado, Sánchez, Fuego (Roca), Piatti (Pérez); Moreno, Caicedo (Léo Baptistão)

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Umtiti, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Gomes (Mascherano); Messi, Suárez, Neymar

Lionel Messi sets up Ivan Rakitic to double Barcelona’s lead at Espanyol

That should do it.

Barcelona appears to have gotten the job done against Espanyol today and have kept up with Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. After Luis Suárez gave the Blaugrana the lead early in the second half, Ivan Rakitic has doubled their lead with just under 15 minutes remaining. The goal was made by Lionel Messi’s great run up the gut of the field and through the Espanyol defense. After he made it to the top of the box he laid off a pass for Rakitic to simply pass into the net with pure precision. It’s 2-0!

Luis Suárez capitalizes on mistake, clinically puts Barcelona ahead of Espanyol

Finally!

After a worrisome first half, Luis Suarez has put Barcelona on track to keep pace with Real Madrid in the title race after their win today. It was looking scary for the Blaugrana after an ineffective opening 45 minutes, but they’ve jumped into the lead just six minutes into the second half after Suarez latched onto an errant back pass and finished as clinically as you’d expect him to. It’s 1-0 to Barça with 37 minutes to go.

Espanyol take aim at Lionel Messi ahead of Barcelona Derby

Motivation, if any were needed, is right here

Espanyol appear to have taken aim at Lionel Messi as they prepare to welcome Barcelona to the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat on Saturday night.

Quique Sánchez Flores’ side have taken to social media to tweet an image of their shirt being held up with the words ‘Tomorrow, remember what matters’.

The tweet seems to allude to Messi’s iconic celebration at the Bernabeu last weekend after he held his shirt aloft to the crowd after scoring the last minute winner, and his 500th goal for the club.

However, Espanyol seem to have taken a dim view of his celebration implying the club is always far more important than the individual.

Messi goes into the game in red-hot form with 10 goals in his last eight games and have scoring 11 times from his last 19 shots on target in La Liga.

Probably not a good idea to get Messi angry again, Espanyol. It's actually a dumb idea.

FC Barcelona News: 29 April 2017: Iniesta Ruled Out Of Derby, Ronaldinho Shines In Return

A round-up of all the latest Barca news

Squad announcement for the Barcelona derby - FC Barcelona
Luis Enrique has announced his match day squad for this Saturday’s derby at the RCDE Stadium at 8.45 pm CET. Barça need three points to continue putting pressure on Real Madrid in the La Liga title race and to stay top of the table. Moreover, a derby is always a special match.

Barça Legends 3-2 Real Madrid Leyendas: Ronaldinho still has his magic - FC Barcelona
The Barça Legends have replicated what their peers did last Sunday by defeating Real Madrid 3-2, in the case of the veterans in Beirut on Friday evening. Ronaldinho was the biggest attraction as he donned the famous blaugrana shirt for a match for the first time since departing the club in 2008, and we were treated to several memories of his Brazilian magic, including assists for all three FCB goals, the first to Ludovic Giuly, which he did without even looking, a clone of the goal they scored against Milan in the 2006 Champions League semi-final.

Derby Preview: RCD Espanyol v FC Barcelona - FC Barcelona
Leo Messi’s last minute winner at the Santiago Bernabéu brought FC Barcelona’s Liga title campaign right back to life and the 7-1 thumping of Osasuna on Wednesday made sure things stayed that way. But there are still four ‘finals’ to go and the first of those is none other than a derby trip to neighbours RCD Espanyol on Saturday at 8.45pm CET.

Luis Enrique says Iniesta is a doubt for Espanyol game - FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona have another big game this weekend, one of the most important for the fans, when they take on Espanyol in the city derby in La Liga. In his pre-game press conference at the Ciutat Esportiva, coach Luis Enrique revealed that Andrés Iniesta was a doubt for the trip to the Cornellà-El Prat stadium on Saturday at 8.45pm CET. The Barça captain missed training on Friday morning due to a groin problem and Luis Enrique admitted: “We will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he can be included in the squad.”

Theo Hernandez closing in on summer transfer to Barcelona
Barcelona could deal a blow to Real Madrid by beating them to the signing of Atletico Madrid's Theo Hernandez. The transfer is not one they had prioritised for this season, but progress has been made in recent weeks. In recent weeks, Barça have worked with both the player and Atletico, who are never keen to sell to their city rival. They tension between the two clubs has increased due to Madrid's reported interest in Antoine Griezmann this season and Barça could be the ideal solution in the Theo case.

Neymar's magic against Espanyol - FC Barcelona
Neymar is no stranger to big performances against tough opposition and Espanyol are no exception. The Brazilian knows all about scoring and creating goals against Barça’s city rivals both at Camp Nou and at the Cornellà-El Prat stadium. The Barça number 11 will be back this weekend for Saturday’s derby at 8.45pm CET at Espanyol after completing his three games suspension.

Barcelona Transfer News: Sanchez deal being prepared by Nou Camp | Football | Sport | Express.co.uk
The Colombian is said to be valued at £21million (€25m) and is tipped to be Samuel Umtiti’s long-term defensive partner at the Nou Camp. Ajax are said to be realistic about their chances of keeping the player but are in no immediate need to sell. He cost the Dutch club just £4.2m when arriving from Atletico Nacional.

La Liga: Espanyol vs FC Barcelona: Team News, Match Preview

Another derby win for the Blaugrana?

FC Barcelona will be hoping to record their third successive win and maintain their lead at the top of La Liga tomorrow evening when they make the short distance across town to face city rivals, RCD Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. The Catalan derby might not be as publicised as El Clasico, but for the Blaugrana, a trip across the city has often been more difficult than a trip to the Santiago Bernabeu in recent seasons.

Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration as Espanyol have only taken points off their neighbours once in the past five years, but in terms of the physicality and pressure that Barcelona face, this is a very tough fixture indeed. This season promises to be no exception. With the title race closer than ever, Espanyol would relish the opportunity to be the ones to truly end Barça’s hopes of a “three-peat” and their form this season has been impressive.

While they may be out of the race to claim a European qualification berth, they are five points clear of their nearest challenger in 9th place, and if results go their way in the final few weeks of the season they could easily climb up to 8th – which would represent their highest finish since 2011. Their home form in particular has been a highlight; Espanyol have lost just four matches at home thus far this campaign and if they can keep it that way by the final whistle tomorrow, they might just end Luis Enrique’s title dreams.

Even with a UEFA Champions League semi-final to contend with in midweek, Real Madrid are heavy favourites to dispatch Valencia in the 4.15pm CET kick-off. Despite resting a litany of stars, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, in midweek, Real smashed six past Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor and for the moment, Zinedine Zidane’s side are showing no signs of a decline after losing El Clasico.

If results go as expected, Barcelona will be three points behind the league leaders by the time they kick-off in Catalunya and the question remains whether the Blaugrana can cope with the pressure and begin to show some consistency away from home.

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

The big news ahead of the derby is that Neymar will be available to make his return from suspension. The midweek thrashing of Osasuna represented the final match of his three-game ban for clapping and with that unfortunate moment behind him, one can be sure that Neymar will be the target of some… rough treatment… from the Espanyol players.

It comes with the territory when you are considered one of the world’s very best and much has been made of how Lionel Messi responded to the targeting he experienced at the Bernabeu last weekend. The Argentine used the knocks and the bumps as motivation to respond with the ball at his feet and of course he ended up having the last laugh as he presented his Blaugrana jersey to the Santiago Bernabeu crowd. The issue that some have with Neymar is that he too often responds with his mouth – or worse, with a similar kick of his own – and that it typically gets him in trouble, either with a yellow card or something like the ban he recently received.

There are times when he too uses the anger in a productive fashion. Heck, one could argue that the Paris Saint-Germain was an example of that as Neymar took his frustration and channelled it into a performance that dragged his team to victory and progression. As he returns from suspension, let’s hope we see more of that Neymar tomorrow, and less of the Neymar that put himself in a compromising position against some of the most inconsistent and incompetent officials in the sport.

Aside from Neymar’s return, there really isn’t too much else to consider from a team news perspective. Carles Alena is likely to return to B team duty as Neymar should just take his place in the squad – and at that stage, Enrique will be selecting his starting line-up from pretty much the same 18 as he has for the past few fixtures.

Samuel Umtiti, Andres Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto can be expected to return to the line-up as I suspect that Enrique will return to the same 4-3-3 that defeated Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Of course, Neymar will replace Paco Alcacer in the frontline, but tactically the blueprint will remain the same. If line-ups were picked on form, there would be a question mark around whether Paco Alcacer could remain in the attack ahead of Luis Suarez, but expect the Uruguayan to retain his place despite his recent goal drought.

ESPANYOL

In Pablo Piatti, Espanyol have their own diminutive Argentine who both scores and creates goals. Piatti has reached double figures for goals and actually has one more assist to his name than Lionel Messi in domestic competition at least, so Barcelona will need to be wary of the threat that he will pose alongside his usual partner in crime, Gerard Moreno. The ex-Villarreal forward has blossomed at Espanyol under Quique Sanchez Flores and with 12 goals to his name, Moreno ranks as the fourth-highest Spanish goalscorer in the division this season.

In terms of team news, Hernan Perez returns to the fold for Espanyol after two games on the sideline through injury while Victor Alvarez and Javi Lopez have also been named to the squad in place of Jose Antonio Reyes and Andres Melendo.

Marco Verratti’s agent denies he has met Barcelona for talks

A summer move to Camp Nou has been played down...for now

Marco Verratti’s agent has denied speculation he has met with Barcelona officials to discuss a summer move for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

The midfielder was splashed all over the front page of Mundo Deportivo today with a report that Donato Di Campli had opened talks with Barca during the recent Champions League meeting between the two sides.

However, Di Campli has now claimed he only went to see the game and did not discuss a transfer.

"A meeting with Barça? No, I only went to see a Champions League match.

"In addition, I will also go to Monte Carlo to attend the match between Juventus and Monaco."

Source | Premium Sport

Verratti’s future has been the subject of much speculation for some time now and you can expect those rumours to intensify ahead of the transfer window reopening.

A host of top clubs have already been rumoured to be interested in his services and it is no secret Barca need to strengthen their midfield this summer.

Neymar can handle the pressure against Espanyol, says Luis Enrique

The Brazilian will return from suspension

Luis Enrique has confirmed Neymar is ready to take on Espanyol after serving a three-match ban for his sending off against Malaga.

The Brazilian has missed the games against Real Sociedad, Real Madrid and Osasuna but will feature on Saturday with Lucho insisting Neymar can be trusted to keep his temper.

"Neymar is ready to compete," he told a pre-match press conference.

"He is a specialist at dealing with these types of situation.

"If there's a player that receives the most fouls it's Neymar, and I think he can control these situations perfectly.

"But a derby against Espanyol is a game when control is needed from all the players."

One man who could miss out is Andres Iniesta due to a groin problem with Enrique revealing they will leave a decision on whether he can play until Saturday.

He added: “We will have to wait until tomorrow to see if he can be included in the squad.”

Luis Enrique has also backed Luis Suarez, who was rested in midweek, and has now gone five games with a goal.

"I am not worried, because if you look at his figures it is not just about scoring goals -- which he's spectacular at -- but about assists and infinite other things he contributes to the team," he explained.

Rumor round-up: Cocu, Alba, Sanchez & Hernandez

There’s another new name in the frame for Lucho’s job

Cocu fancies Barcelona job

Phillip Cocu’s name has been added to the ever growing list of potential Luis Enrique replacements after the PSV coach fluttered his eyelids in the direction of his former club.

"It would be fantastic to coach Barcelona," he told Cadena SER.

"You never know. Whoever does take over from Luis Enrique will have a difficult job."

Cocu may well be up for it, but according to Marca, Ernesto Valverde remains the hot favorite, ahead of Juan Carlos Unzue.

Barca beat Madrid to Hernandez

Barcelona have beaten Real Madrid to the signing of Theo Hernandez, so say Onda Cero.

The defender had been on the verge of a move to the Bernabeu but has changed his mind, believing a move to Atletico’s city rivals might be a bad move.

Instead he will head to Camp Nou with Jordi Alba going the other way in a loan deal.

Alba is ‘unsellable’

Actually Alba is going nowhere, say Marca who claim that Barcelona consider him “unsellable”, even if they do want Theo Hernandez.

The full-back has been left on the bench in recent weeks which, unsurprisingly, has sparked huge speculation he will be off in the summer but Marca are having none of it.

Barca eye Ajax defender Davinson Sánchez

Barcelona are set to reignite their interest in Davinson Sánchez after narrowly missing out on the Colombian last summer, according to AS.

With Jeremy Mathieu on his way out of the club, Barca are looking for replacements and see Sanchez as the perfect long-term partner for Samuel Umtiti.

Barcelona 7-1 Osasuna: Community Player Ratings

Camp Nou saw a big win on Wednesday night

Marc-André ter Stegen

Was completely wrongfooted by Torres’ free kick but otherwise had very little to do in an extremely one-side 90 minutes at Camp Nou.

BB Readers say: 6

Gill says: 6

Javier Mascherano

What a night for Javier Mascherano who finally opened his account for Barcelona after seven years with an emphatic penalty. He might have had another too, Salvatore Sirigu pushing his header onto the post. Also delivered a delicious ball to an unmarked Paco Alcacer in the box, which he might have done better with, in an all-round superb display.

BB Readers say: 10

Gill says: 9

Gerard Piqué

Was a little unlucky not to find himself on the scoresheet too with a header that looked destined for the back of the net until Mondragon hooked it clear. Showed great technique to bring the ball down in the area before hitting the post, just seconds before Gomes picked up the loose ball and slotted home.

BB Readers say: 8

Gill says: 7

Lucas Digne

A rare start for Digne and a decent display at the back against a limited Osasauna side. Got forward a few times and picked up some promising attacking positions.

BB Readers say: 6

Gill says: 7

Sergio Busquets

Not his best display by all means and was also guilty of giving the free kick away from which Torres scored Osasuna’s goal.

BB Readers say: 8

Andre Gomes

Had a nervy start to the game but improved after he thumped the ball home just under the half hour mark with a simply superb finish. Added a second with another clinical finish after latching onto a loose ball in the box and looked to visibly gain in confidence from his goals.

BB Readers say: 8

Ivan Rakitic

Set up Gomes for his first goal with a lovely cross and also had a hand in Messi’s second. Was a little unlucky to be denied a penalty after being barged off the ball in the box but was frequently involved and provided good supply from the right.

Denis Suarez

A quietly influential display for Barcelona. He won the penalty after being brought down by Fran Merida and also set up Paco Alcacer for his second goal of the night.

Arda Turan

Back in action after injury and was fairly quiet although did have some good moments. Might have scored but missed with a header but was involved in Messi’s second goal.

Lionel Messi

Another dazzling display by Messi who set Barcelona on their way after showing great anticipation to steal possession before dinking it perfectly over Sirigu. Added a second with a precision finish before being given a well-deserved rest in the second half.

BB Readers say: 10

Gill says: 9

Paco Alcacer

Made great runs all night long but found it tough going with the slow pace of the game in the first half. A more productive showing after the break and got the goals his hard work deserved.

Barcelona Denounce Malaga President After “Catalan Scum” Tweet

Luis Enrique implies he lacks confidence in Real Madrid-Malaga match

FC Barcelona has officially denounced the president of Malaga, Abdullah Al Thani, to Spain’s Anti-Violence Committee after the Qatari Sheikh tweeted that “Catalan scum will not smell the league trophy.”

This after Malaga coach Michel had dropped a strange hint about their last match of the season, against Real Madrid. He was reminded he could be in the same situation as Jorge Valdano, another ex Real Madrid player turned coach who twice denied Real Madrid La Liga with a victory for his Tenerife on the last matchday. To this, Michel said, cryptically: “the difference between me and Valdano is that I’m much more of a Madridista.”

Al Thani was asked by a fan on Twitter if Malaga would help deny Madrid the tile, prompting the Malaga president to launch into an attack on Barcelona.

When asked if he had confidence in Malaga, Barça coach Luis Enrique simply said: “If my grandma had wheels, she would be a bicycle.”

Barcelona will also report Al Thani’s comments to to the RFEF's Competition Committee and to the department in charge of maintaining the integrity of La Liga.

Cules worldwide are reporting low confidence in Malaga and suspicion after these comments by Michel and Al Thani.

WATCH: Even the mighty Neymar can try a skill and fall on his butt

LOL, Ney. LOL.

Barcelona superstar Neymar is one of the best players in the world. He's an unbelievably skilled player who can dribble his way past any defender if he wants to. There are numerous videos on the internet with his skills, but the video above might be the first where his skills fail miserably.

What's even more fun is that Neymar himself shared that embarrassing moment, which shows that he's not afraid to make fun of himself, and that's very cool for a very famous person.

It happens to all of us. All of us have tried a skill and have fallen on our ass. And even the mighty Neymar can try a skill and fall on his ass. He's human after all.

Why did Javier Mascherano take Barcelona’s penalty against Osasauna?

A goal before he leaves this summer?

“Will I take a penalty? No chance at all,” that was Javier Mascherano’s response just over a year ago when he was asked why he had refused to take one against Rayo Vallecano.

Gerard Pique revealed that he had asked Mascherano to take the kick but he had refused with Luis Suarez instead taking it and missing – Barca’s seventh failure in 13 La Liga attempts at the time.

Fast forward a year later and Mascherano finally scored his first Barcelona goal after 319 games by smashing home a spot-kick in the 7-1 win over Osasuna. By why now Javier?

It’s not the first time Mascherano has turned down the chance to open his account, the defender has revealed that Lionel Messi has asked him several times but he has always refused because he “didn’t believe it was his place”.

And it wasn’t like there weren’t plenty of options on the pitch when Denis Suarez was sent tumbling by Fran Merida. Ivan Rakitic, who handed the ball over to Mascherano, has even admitted he wanted the kick.

“I wanted to take it, but Pique said to let Mascherano take it and he was right -- you have to listen to the president. I think it was perfect.”

Source: Sport

There were nudges and smiles all over the bench at the sight of Mascherano stepping up and they quickly turned to delight and backslapping as the defender thundered the ball home.

Luis Enrique, meanwhile, appeared bemused by the whole thing after the game and claimed Camp Nou chose the penalty taker.

“I think it was the supporters behind the goal that called for him to take it. It was a real positive. But it’s not about the goal, that’s a mere anecdote because his mission is not to score goals.

“He is a top player, there can be no doubts about his performances. He’s a born competitor and he makes his team-mates better.”

Source: Sport

Huge words of praise from Lucho but was the ball actually handed to Mascherano as a farewell gift?

There has been huge speculation that this season could be the 32-year-old’s last at Barcelona with a move to Turkey mooted while other report have claimed he could be headed back to River Plate.

Mascherano, meanwhile, has given little away – doing his best after the game to play down his goal.

“It's nothing. At first I tried to get out of it, but under pressure from my teammates and the crowd I decided to take it on."

It would have been a fun moment to remember in years to come had I missed it. I wasn't sure about it at all, honestly, but it was difficult to say no."

Source: beIN.

Maybe we should just ask President Pique?

La Liga 2017: Three things we learned from Barcelona 7-1 Osasuna

There were plenty of positives for Barça at Camp Nou

1. Mascherano can take a mean penalty

There were smiles all around Camp Nou when Ivan Rakitic handed Javier Mascherano the ball after referee Jose Munuera had pointed to the spot when Fran Merida brought down Denis Suarez.

The Argentine who had never scored in 319 Barcelona appearances showed no signs of nerves as he absolutely hammered the ball past Salvatore Sirigu in the Osasuna goal.

A landmark goal for Mascherano but also for Barcelona: the club’s 100th league goal of the season and their 500th under Luis Enrique.

Given Barcelona’s less than impressive penalty record recently, it begs the question, why hasn’t Mascherano taken a penalty before? And also, who will take the next one?

2. Andre Gomes can finish

Andre Gomes’ critics have been wondering all season just what exactly it is he does, but against Osasuna he showed that he certainly knows how to finish.

To be fair he was having a real stinker early on, misplacing passes left, right and centre and looking thoroughly uncomfortable out wide on the right wing.

However, that all changed on the half hour mark when he thundered home first time from a fine cross by Ivan Rakitic for just his second goal in 42 Barcelona appearances.

His second followed after the break and was another decent effort after the ball had broken free in the area after Gerard Pique had hit the post.

The goals will surely bring some much-needed confidence to Gomes who has endured a difficult first season at Camp Nou but may just be starting to show he does have a future at the club after all.

3. Squad players finally step up

The strength, or relative lack of it, in Barcelona’s squad has been a talking point all season but for once there were plenty of positives at Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique made five changes for the game, notably leaving out Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta while Neymar was serving the last of his three-game ban.

He was rewarded with two goals for Paco Alcacer, another two for Andre Gomes while Arda Turan was back in action after a lay-off and Carlos Alena got 30 minutes of first-team football.

Yes, it was only Osasuna, La Liga’s bottom side who have now conceded 82 goals in 34 games, but unlike against Malaga and Deportivo, this time Barcelona did not slip up.

Instead the goals flowed, the final three even coming after Lionel Messi had departed to a huge ovation and meaning that, just for once, there was no MSN on the pitch for Barca.

Barcelona 7-1 Osasuna, La Liga 2017: Match Review

Barcelona extend their lead at the top to keep the pressure on Real Madrid

FC Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the table on Wednesday evening with a commanding 7-1 win over bottom-place CA Osasuna at the Camp Nou. Full of confidence after their last-gasp El Clasico victory, Barcelona started the match in an up-tempo fashion and were rewarded for their work ethic with two goals in the opening half-hour, courtesy of Lionel Messi and Andre Gomes.

Osasuna temporarily made a contest of it in the second-half with an early free-kick from Roberto Torres, but Barcelona promptly pulled ahead again and cruised into the distance as Andre Gomes and Lionel Messi both completed their braces, while Paco Alcacer helped himself to a brace of his own either side of penalty from Javier Mascherano, who broke his duck after 319 games for the club.

After a couple of difficult, demanding matches against Juventus and Real Madrid and in the past week, Luis Enrique opted to heavily rotate his squad for the visit of Osasuna on Wednesday evening. Not only did the Blaugrana return to a 3-4-3, but they recalled a number of players who had featured sparsely in recent months. Lucas Digne occupied the left defensive role typically filled by Samuel Umtiti, while Denis Suarez replaced Andres Iniesta on the left-hand side of midfield.

Elsewhere, Andre Gomes started on the right in a role that Sergi Roberto or Rafinha Alcantara usually enjoy and in attack, Arda Turan made his return in place of the suspended Neymar while Paco Alcacer started as centre-forward with Luis Suarez dropping to the bench. Evidently Luis Enrique had one eye on the upcoming Catalan derby with RCD Espanyol, but would the changes disrupt the Blaugrana’s momentum?

After a somewhat slow start, Barcelona began to find their feet and started to plug away at a resolute Osasuna defense. With virtually their entire team behind the ball, Osasuna seemed to be frustrating their star-studded hosts before a momentary lapse of concentration cost them dearly. A loose pass from Fausto in the Osasuna midfield was anticipated in expert fashion by Lionel Messi who got a foot in to intervene and after juggling the ball into the area, the Argentine nonchalantly lifted a finish over the head of the onrushing Salvatore Sirigu.

For those counting at home, it was Messi’s 32nd in La Liga this season, his 48th in all competitions and his 501st for the club.

Despite the mistake, Osasuna stuck to their gameplan of defending in numbers and for a while, it seemed to pay dividends. The chances began to dry up for the hosts and when they did come, they typically came as the result of an Osasuna mistake whereby possession was conceded in a threatening area.

This was a theme repeated in the game’s second goal, albeit to a lesser extent as once again, Lionel Messi was involved in the build-up. After an uncharacteristically poor pass was intercepted, Messi pounced on the defender to reclaim possession and his left-footed strike at goal was deflected inches wide of the post for a corner kick.

A smart routine saw Rakitic play the ball short to Arda Turan from the resulting corner, and Arda tried to cut the ball back from the byline. While that was partially cleared, Sergio Busquets poked the loose ball out to Denis Suarez who found Rakitic in space on the wing. Having just taken the corner, the Croatian midfielder composed himself and made the most of his opportunity with a low cross which was met at pace by Andre Gomes, who hammered home the game’s second goal into the corner of the net.

At the half-hour mark, this game was as good as over. The only question remaining was how many Barcelona would score.

The last time that Osasuna visited the Camp Nou, they left on the wrong end of a 7-0 hammering and Barcelona could have easily scored another before the break. Another clever set-piece routine freed up Paco Alcacer for a header on goal and his looping effort had Sirigu scrambling across his goal for an unconvincing save. In spite of the pressure, Osasuna held firm and entered the break only two goals behind. A comeback was unlikely, but far from impossible.

As the two teams re-emerged for the second-half, the last thing that the Camp Nou crowd were expecting was an Osasuna comeback. Barcelona had been simply too good, too clinical in the first-half and many expected this to continue into the second-half. However, before Barcelona could create their first chance of the second period, Osasuna were awarded a free-kick in a promising position and lined up for their real shot on goal.

Roberto Torres stepped up and deceived Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a fabulous curling effort; at first glance it appeared to be headed over the wall and ter Stegen stepped in that direction expecting an easy save only for the ball to curve into the space he had just vacated. Minutes into the second-half and Culés were reminded that this game wasn’t over just yet.

As expected, the goal prompted a response from the hosts and within moments of the restart they had forced a fine save from Salvatore Sirigu. Of all people it was Javier Mascherano with the chance as he directed a header towards goal from point-blank range. For a moment it seemed as though Mascherano was going to finally claim his first goal as Barcelona player but the Italian keeper clawed the ball off the line and onto the post.

A penalty appeal for Ivan Rakitic was strangely turned down by the referee but Barcelona used it as motivation and before the hour mark was reached, they had reclaimed their two-goal cushion. Gerard Pique was unlucky not to score himself after a typically composed attempt in the Osasuna area but while the Catalan couldn’t find the back of the net, Andre Gomes could as the oft-criticised Portuguese midfielder dispatched the rebound for his third goal of the season.

With the night’s proceedings back on script, Barcelona set about making life miserable for the visitors and it took just minutes for Lionel Messi to rub salt into the wounds. In so many ways this was a trademark Messi goal; picking up the ball in a central position, Messi cut inside a plethora of defenders and when he had enough space, he unleashed an arrow right into the corner of the net. It would be his last action of the night, as Enrique promptly withdrew the Argentine for Carlos Alena.

While Messi was off the field, the goals wouldn’t stop coming. Barely a couple of minutes had passed and Barcelona had scored their fifth. Arda Turan’s clever pass over the top found the run of Paco Alcacer who had been making countless runs behind the Osasuna defense and the former Valencia star clipped his shot over Sirigu to extend the lead to four.

A tough night for Osasuna only got worse; again it was a matter of minutes before Barcelona got another. Denis Suarez jinked inside Fran Merida and the former Barcelona youth teamer left out a leg, tripping him in the process. It was a careless challenge and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot. Lionel Messi had left the field, and Andre Gomes was on a hat-trick so the choice for the penalty seemed clear…

Javier Mascherano.

319 games into his illustrious Barcelona career, Mascherano stepped up and fired the penalty into the roof of the net in emphatic fashion. For his many years of fine service it was a well-deserved goal, although one had to feel a little sympathy for Osasuna at this stage of the evening.

Still, there was no stopping the Blaugrana. Paco Alcacer rounded Sirigu and stroked the ball into the net for his seventh goal of the season as the clock winded down. Once the allotted time was up, the referee promptly blew for full-time and all attentions turned to the Riazor.

Barcelona 7-1 Osasuna, 2017 La Liga: Match Review
