The defender says he did a "great job" at Athletic
If Josep Maria Bartomeu is as good as his word then we should know the identity of Luis Enrique’s replacement on Monday, although to be honest we’re all pretty sure we know it already, step forward Ernesto Valverde.
The 53-year-old stepped down as coach at Athletic Bilbao this week and the gossip columns have already had him house-hunting in Barcelona as he prepares to take over.
To be honest, Valverde has been the favourite for some weeks so we’ve all had time to get used to him being the next boss and one man who has given his verdict on the new man is Gerard Pique.
“Ernesto has done a great job at Athletic the last few years,” the centre-back said via Sport.
“He played here for Barcelona as a player and I think he could be a good option, as could others.
“I can't decide myself on anyone and I don't know who will be the next manager. It's not my job and I haven't put a lot of thought into it.”
Pique’s words are hardly emphatic mind, “he could be a good option, as could others” although at this point I doubt it matters as the only thing we seem to be missing is an official announcement,
Indeed although Valverde is yet to take over he is already being linked with bringing Ander Herrera to Barcelona, though that seems to be a rumour based largely on the fact that Barca need a new midfielder and the pair’s Athletic Bilbao connection.
