If a signing is to take place, Coutinho’s role is not obvious.
Philippe Coutinho is considered one of the biggest names on Barcelona’s summer wish list, but there is one big problem with the hypothetical signing: where would he play?
The Liverpool star tends to play as either a forward or attacking midfielder, and primarily on the left side. Assuming new boss Ernesto Valverde retains Barcelona’s 4-3-3 template, where does Coutinho play if he arrives at the Camp Nou?
Well, the place in the left side of midfield suits him best, but that’s Andres Iniesta’s spot. As much as Iniesta will be rested and Coutinho would get plenty of time there... when it came to the big games... el Clasico, cup finals, the Champions League... where does Coutinho go?
To the right side of midfield trying to provide defensive cover a la Ivan Rakitic? Is he willing to do that, or even suited for it?
It seems that right now Barcelona more clearly need a replacement for Xavi on the right, being that Xavi has not been with the team for two years now. Iniesta is still there.
This is one of the biggest questions about a possible Coutinho transfer.
