Barcelona has a big summer ahead with Ernesto Valverde coming in as the new coach and Robert Fernandez in the last year of his contract as sporting director. There is a need to shift dead wood while revitalizing the squad, all without spending too extravagantly. Can you do it? Let’s take a look. I’ll give my impression but tell me where you disagree!
Goalkeepers
Marc-Andre Ter Stegen: Keep.
Jasper Cillissen: Keep. He did a good job as the second keeper and there's no reason to change.
Jordi Masip: It's his choice. Masip is good for a third keeper but he won't want to stay there forever. If he leaves, promote Jose Suarez from the B team.
Signings: None.
Defenders
Gerard Pique: Keep.
Samuel Umtiti: Keep.
Javier Mascherano: Keep, though I’m not as sure. His wages will be high but he’s still a good player and a great influence on the locker room.
Jeremy Mathieu: Sell. Sorry Mathieu, but your time at Barça is up.
Marlon: Promote. He’s ready.
Thomas Vermaelen: Sell.
Signings: None unless Mascherano is sold.
Fullbacks
Jordi Alba: Keep.
Aleix Vidal: Keep. Not sure how he will do coming back from the injury, but early signs are encouraging.
Lucas Digne: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) He’s a good enough player to be part of the squad, but there’s no need to refuse big offers.
Douglas: Sell at any price. Even the memes are old now.
Signings: One is desperately needed, though who exactly that is... is a tougher question.
Midfielders
Sergio Busquets: Keep.
Andres Iniesta: Keep.
Ivan Rakitic: Keep. Rakitic is still a reliable player and a good soldier to stay on the bench. He’s also a safety valve as he can deputize in all three midfield spots fairly well.
Andre Gomes: Sell if necessary to fund a purchase. Gomes is finally starting to find his groove so it seems cruel, but the team needs funds and space in the squad.
Denis Suarez: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) He’s young and deserves another shot.
Arda Turan: Sell for big money. Hopefully Chinese teams still want him.
Sergi Roberto: Keep. He’s a good jack-of-all trades that can do a job. I don’t see him as a future star, exactly, but worth keeping around.
Rafinha: Keep (unless a good enough offer comes.) This might be his last chance at being a Barcelona player. He’s a fine squad player when fit. He’s just not fit often.
Sergi Samper: Loan unless enough players leave. He’s only 22 and needs more experience.
Signings: This is the other big signing. There are a lot of options but Barcelona will have to spend to find a suitable player. Marco Verratti would be the best choice, but the chances of prying him from Paris Saint-Germain aren’t great. This is the toughest position since at least three in that list probably need to be shifted out, yet all of them have value.
Forwards
Lionel Messi: Keep.
Neymar: Keep.
Luis Suarez: Keep.
Paco Alcacer: Sell if necessary. If an offer comes along, Barcelona should take it. But I don’t think a good enough one will. I think his value will increase after he settles down at Barcelona, so one more year to evaluate could be a good decision.
Munir El-Haddadi: Loan again, unless Paco is sold. He’s only 21.
Cristian Tello: Sell.
Signings: From an economic standpoint, signing Gerard Deulofeu just to have as a piece to later sell might make sense. Other than that, not much is needed.
Overall
Without hedging, here’s what I’m currently thinking.
Sell: Mathieu, Vermaelen, Douglas, Gomes, Turan, Tello.
Loan: Samper and Munir
Buy: One fullback, one midfielder, and maybe Deulofeu purely for economic reasons.
