Barcelona 4-2 Eibar, La Liga 2017: Player Ratings

Player ratings for Barcelona’s last league game of the season.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

With Barcelona largely dominating play, ter Stegen had very little to do for the most part, but was still beaten on a couple of occasions. However, he could do very little to prevent Takashi Inui’s perfectly placed shots from finding the back of the net. Otherwise was his usual dependable self, making a pair of saves and being careful with the ball at his feet.

Sergi Roberto

A very disappointing last game of the season for the right-back who had a very poor night defending. His terrible marking of Inui was just the latest of numerous defensive mistakes by Sergi and Barcelona will surely be looking to reinforce the position in the summer transfer market. It wasn’t much better in attack for Roberto as he added little value there as well. He was subbed out at halftime with a groin injury.

Community Rating: 5.8

Marlon

With most of the central defenders injured, Marlon was given another chance to impress and the young Brazilian did just that. Despite his inexperience, he didn’t seem out of place as he made a couple very good defensive plays, including a diving tackle from behind on a dangerous Eibar attack. It’s safe to say that Marlon’s audition went very well and we could be seeing more of him next season.

Community Rating: 6.7

Samuel Umtiti

Once again, Umtiti proved to be best piece of business on the defensive side of the ball in years. The Frenchman was again the most sure-footed defender on the pitch. His positional awareness was also almost impeccable as he made an impressive six interceptions, though he was beaten easily on a couple occasions in the air game.

Community Rating: 7.1

Jordi Alba

Alba looked like his old self in attack again, offering speed, width and good passing. He seemed to have picked up an assist in the first half, but Suarez’s goal was correctly ruled out for offside. While Alba put together a very good performance, one has to dock a point from his rating for his ridiculous dive/trip/fall in the penalty area for a penalty and it was only fair that Yoel saved that try.

Rating: 7.0

Community Rating: 6.8

Sergio Busquets

Not a vintage display from Busquets who was especially struggling in the first half as he had problems contacting Eibar on the attack. Was much better after the break, but we never rarely saw Busquets at his best against Eibar. Even his usually dependable passing suffered as he finished the game with a, for him terrible, 87% pass success rate.

Rating: 6.5

Community Rating: 7.0

Ivan Rakitić

The Croatian was found all over the Barcelona midfield in this one, as he was motoring almost all over the pitch. With Roberto having a poor game, Rakitić was left to cover an awful lot of space on the right side and maybe that was a reason why his playmaking abilities suffered a bit, but he still managed to be involved in a handful of good attacking moves. Like most of his teammates, he even managed to miss a clear cut chance.

Andres Iniesta

You could hardly notice Iniesta in the first half, but as the game went on Iniesta started to get into a rhythm, and had it not been for a pair of exceptional Yoel saves, Iniesta could’ve finished with a brace. He also made a big influence on the game with his passing, helping create two good scoring chances for Barcelona and in most games he would’ve had two assists.

Lionel Messi

Messi will not remember this game with much fondness, even after he scored a magnificent goal in the dying moments of the game by slaloming his way past numerous Eibar defenders. However, he missed a sitter in the second half, and also had a penalty saved by Yoel, but karma might have been at fault there. Still, Messi added two goals to his season total, even though all signs were pointing to Messi being left frustrated.

Community Rating: 8.0

Luis Suarez

It’s fair to say I preferred the finishing machine that was Suarez of the first half of the season than Suarez of the last two months. Suarez missed numerous golden opportunities, either through poor accuracy or excellent goalkeeping, but the Uruguayan should’ve done better. He did finish the game with an easy tap in in the second half, but a hat-trick could’ve/should’ve been scored.

Neymar

A good case can be made that Neymar was the integral part to Barcelona’s comeback. He was a force on the left wing, providing constant threat and it was his shot that bounced off the post and resulted in the own-goal that started the fight-back. Neymar then won the penalty kick that resulted in the winning goal.

Rating: 7.5

Community Rating: 7.1

Andre Gomes

Introduced at halftime for the injured Roberto, but his impact on the pitch was similar to the player he replaced. Like Roberto, Gomes also failed to cover Inui, but it wasn’t all bad as one has to consider the Portuguese international was playing at a position he was unfamiliar with.

Paco Alcacer

Alcacer needed less than two minutes after being introduced in the 71st minute to make an impact on the pitch, providing an excellent flick-on for Luis Suarez’s equalizing goal.

Rating: 6.5

Community Rating: 6.1

Team

This was hardly an epic performance from Barcelona to close the book on the 2016/17 La Liga season, but it was enough for the win and a winning goodbye from the Camp Nou for Luis Enrique. He probably would’ve like a less stressful win and a La Liga trophy, but you can’t always have what you want.

Community Rating: 6.5

Luis Enrique

With all the injures, especially on defense, Lucho did not have an easy task selecting a team, but he “settled” on the best team available and any team that features the MSN trio would have to be enough against Eibar. Thank you for everything Lucho!

Rating: 7.0

Man of the Match - Messi

With the way the game went, this was always going to be a two horse race between Neymar and Messi, but with the winning goal and a magical insurance strike Messi did enough to win the MotM award with 57% of the votes.
