Reports from El Confidencial claim that Barça has begun a battle with Real Madrid for one of the World Cup's best players, James Rodríguez
James Rodríguez is one of the biggest stars coming out of the 2014 World Cup. And it looks like Barça has its eyes set on him.
According to a report from newspaper El Confidencial, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has already offered AS Monaco €90 million for the signing of the 23-year-old midfielder. James is a target of Real Madrid, who is just waiting for the Ángel di María transfer to Paris Saint-Germain to be completed before they go after Rodríguez.
The report also says that Real Madrid officials believe that Barça is just trying to get some sort of revenge. As we reported last month, the Blaugrana made a formal offer for Toni Kroos, but Madrid allegedly 'crossed' the negotiation and offered Kroos a higher contract, which attracted the German midfielder. Upset with that 'loss', Zubi and Bartomeu turned their attention to James, who is a Madrid target for more than a year.
James has no buyout clause in his contract, but AS Monaco reportedly wants to double what they paid for Rodríguez when they bought him from Porto -- €40 million. Barça are offering more than that, and it could help Barcelona's chances, since Madrid is offering €70 million -- again, if the report is actually accurate.
Also according to the report, Barcelona wants to sign James to a contract for the 2015/16 season, not the new one starting in August. For two reasons: number one, they don't have the money to do it, since they've spent almost that much on Luis Suárez. Second, Barça plans are to use their remaining transfer money on new center-backs.
James Rodríguez shined bright on Brazil, scoring six goals on five games and winning the Golden Boot award. He was also highly regarded to win the Golden Ball, but that one ended up with Lionel Messi.
If the reports are true, Barça and James would sign a pre-contract that would guarantee him to be a Blaugrana in 2015.
