FC Barcelona: Third Highest Attendance in Football

In average, Barça is way better than average.

FC Barcelona matches are events. People from all over the world dream to be in the Camp Nou. The loyal fan-base is always there, going to Barça's home to root for the Culés. The stadium is a gigantic one, and the attendance is huge for most games.

In fact, in average, Barcelona's matches at the Camp Nou registered the third-highest attendance in the world last season, according to data published by Mundo Deportivo on Thursday. With 72,116 spectators, the matches at Camp Nou ranked only behind Manchester United (75,207) and Borussia Dortmund (80,297).

Barcelona, obviously, leads the attendance numbers in Spain. Real Madrid comes second in the domestic ranking, but just a bit behind, with an average of 71,558 people in Santiago Bernabéu.

Despite the great numbers, they are a little misleading. United, Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Schalke 04, for instance, get attendance averages that equal almost 100% of the stadium's capacity. The Camp Nou has officially 98,787 available seats, which means that Barça's occupancy rate is only 73%, way behind the German and English clubs, for example.

It's not easy to fill a 99-thousand seat stadium anymore. The bigger games still sell the Camp Nou out, but in the other matches, it becomes too expensive to have only 70% of the stadium occupied. Doesn't matter. Barcelona will build the Espai Barça, that involves expanding the stadium capacity to 106 thousand seats, among other improvements to make the Camp Nou the most modern stadium in Europe.

Will the attendance increase along with the stadium's capacity? It's hard to say.
