FIFA World Cup: 1 July 2014: Live Thread

Live thread for the last day of Round of 16 World Cup matches.

We're down to the last two games of the Round of 16 of the competition, and if the last three days are any indication we're in for a great day of football with one of the matches going at least into extra time. Yesterday France and Germany booked a spot in the Quarter-Finals after tough battles with Nigeria and Algeria, respectively.

Argentina vs Switzerland, Kickoff: 6pm CET

The day will kick off with two Barcelona players in action, Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano. Expectations for Argentina are sky high, but after unconvincing performances in an arguably very weak group it will be very interesting to see if La Albiceleste can step it up against the toughest opponent they have taken on so far in the World Cup. Apart from a strong showing against Honduras, Switzerland also haven't impressed many as they have done just enough to make it out of the Group Stage. But even though both teams struggled at times so far anything but a Argentina win will be a major upset.

Belgium vs USA, Kickoff: 10pm CET

Even though most experts are siding with a very impressive Belgium side in my opinion this one could really go either way. So far Belgium were bailed out by late heroics as goals late in the second half saved them on more than one occasions. In fact, all of their three game winning goals were scored after the 77th minute. USA on the other hand have advanced with only four points, but had a few bounces went their way they could've easily had at least seven points. All in all this is a USA team that could surprise today and give the Belgian youngsters a run for their money.

Make sure you enjoy today's football day as the next one doesn't come until July 4.
