Joao Felix and Antoine Griezmann were the biggest signings
The 2019 summer transfer window has seen record levels of spending by La Liga clubs who have paid more then €1 billion to bring in new players for the first time.
The total spending comes to €1.37bn (double what they spent in 2017) and is not too far away from the Premier League’s total of £1.55bn, according to a report from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group.
Of course Barcelona contributed heavily to that figure. The Spanish champions’ most expensive arrival was Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid for €120 million.
They could have added to that figure too by bringing in Neymar, but a mega-money deal for the Brazilian failed to materialise despite being talked about all summer.
Here’s a look at the biggest arrivals in La Liga in summer 2019.
Joao Felix - Benfica to Atletico Madrid: €126m
Antoine Griezmann - Atletico Madrid to Barcelona: €120m
Eden Hazard - Chelsea to Real Madrid: €100m
Frenkie de Jong - Ajax to Barcelona: €75m
Luka Jovic - Eintracht Frankfurt to Real Madrid: €65m
Eden Militao - Porto to Real Madrid: €50m
Ferland Mendy - Lyon to Real Madrid: €48m
Rodrygo - Santos to Real Madrid: €45m
Marcos Llorente - Real Madrid to Atletico Madrid: €40m
Jasper Cillessen - Barcelona to Valencia: €35m
La Liga’s most expensive signing came from Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s men splashed out a whopping €126m to bring Joao Felix to the club from Benfica. They also brought in a host of other players but sold Griezmann, Lucas Hernandez and Rodri for big money.
Real Madrid also enjoyed a summer of heavy investment, signing stars such as Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao.
Yet clubs all across Europe spent heavily this summer. The top five leagues spent a total of €5.5bn with Serie A (€1.17bn), the Bundesliga (€740m) and Ligue 1 (€670m) all setting new spending records too.
