A job well done on the road. Finally.

Barcelona have finally won their first away game of the 2019-20 season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. Barça were solid throughout the game and scored in key moments, and for the first time this season we saw a good performance from the champions on the road.

FIRST HALF

The game was hard-fought from the beginning, with both teams not conceding spaces and staying solid at the back, although Barça had possession and looked more threatening whenever Frenkie De Jong and Arthur touched the ball in the final third.

It took a while for the chances to come, but the game eventually opened up: Carles Pérez forced David Soria into a big save, Ángel forced Ter Stegen into a big save, and Luis Suárez almost scored a beauty from outside the box, all three big chances within five minutes.

As the half went on Getafe started to grow into the game, with their high pressing troubling Barça’s build-up and their set pieces causing a lot of problems. Barça looked a little shaky for the first time in the game, and then they scored: Ter Stegen played sweeper-keeper and cleared a ball from just outside his box to find a wide-open Luis Suárez on the other end, and the Uruguayan chipped the keeper to make it 1-0 five minutes before the end of the half.

At halftime this wasn’t a vintage performance by any means, but considering the recent standard on the road Barça were pretty solid and deserved the lead.

SECOND HALF

Getafe made an attacking substitution at halftime with Kenedy coming on for Allan Nyom, which moved Marc Cucurella from midfielder to left-back and made the home team faster and more dangerous on the left side. Barça saw the change and immediately started attacking down the right, with Carles Pérez running at Cucurella and trying to make plays.

Pérez made a big impact with a shot from outside the box that was saved by David Soria, but Junior Firpo was alert to the rebound and made it 2-0 with his first goal for the club. Getafe naturally went forward looking for a goal, and Barça didn’t just concede possession to try and keep the clean sheet but looked to have the ball as much as possible and press high up the pitch to continue creating chances.

Barça had to suffer a little bit in the end thanks to a second booking and a red card for Clément Lenget, and all of a sudden Getafe were alive and full of danger with Ter Stegen called into action twice and Ángel missing a wide-open header inside the six-yard box.

After surviving the late pressure Barça heard the final whistle to end a very good afternoon in Madrid. No, this wasn’t brilliant or beautiful or exciting, but it was solid, it was sharp, and it was clinical. Can’t ask for much more on the road.
