The latest from the Barcelona boss

Ernesto Valverde has held his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Getafe and spoke about a range of topics.

The Barcelona boss addressed his team’s poor away form, Lionel Messi’s fitness, Luis Suarez’s lack of goals and Ansu Fati’s situation with the Spain national team.

Here are the main points:

Valverde on Lionel Messi

I don’t know how long he’s going to be out. Hopefully he will be back with the team soon. In principle it’s not a serious injury so let’s wait and see how he looks today and going into next week.

Valverde on Ansu Fati

I’d like the player to be with us full time. If he does go with the Under-21 team it would be for the international break, if it’s for the Under-17s it would be longer so we’d have him for less time. We have to wait and see what decision the Federation makes on this. There’s not much we can say really, we’d like him to be away for as little time as possible.

Valverde on Getafe

They are a rock solid team, it’s very hard to deal with their pressure, they are very good in attack and have players that come to your area and put you under a lot of pressure. We found it hard to win there last season, we played a good game but it was difficult. They always get chances at home and don’t give away very many.

Valverde on players going out for dinner

That’s something that teams do, they go out for dinner together now and again. It’s nothing unusual. When things are going well, there’s nothing wrong, when things aren’t going well comments are made. Hopefully the dinner will create some bonding and help get a result tomorrow.

Valverde on Barca’s away form

We haven’t played well away from home, at certain points we have, but in general we haven’t played well and we need to focus on that. You can look at the results, sometimes the score works out, sometimes it doesn’t. You need to play good football, good football gets good results

Valverde on Luis Suarez

Luis hasn’t played many games with the team. He was injured for four weeks, he needs to get back on his feet. He wasn’t able to have a proper pre-season like the others, he had to do it on his own which always happens when you come back from injury. Dembele is a similar case, Messi as well. So they are trying to get their form back as well as their fitness. With goalscorers, they tend to go a run and then hit a rut. He’s a player who has done a lot for us and I’m sure he will continue to do so.
