UEFA Champions League: Bayern Munich 3-2 FC Barcelona: Player Ratings

A detailed, player-by-player breakdown of Barcelona's Champions League Final-clinching loss against Bayern Munich.

I don’t make it a habit of giving high ratings to goalkeepers who give up three goals, but ter Stegen definitely deserves one regardless. Without the young German in goal Barcelona actually could’ve gotten very close to elimination, even though the Catalans scored five goals over two legs. Ter Stegen made five saves on the night, but three stood out – all in the first half. First one came midway through when he, in stunning fashion, kept out a Thomas Muller header destined for the top corner. The second was a quick reflex save on a Bastian Schweinsteiger header, yet the last one was the best of the lot. Ter Stegen showed lightning quick reflexes and hand strength to slow down Robert Lewandowski’s powerful drive and then showed his athletic abilities to dive back to prevent the ball from crossing the line.

Apparently Alves really wants that new Barcelona contract as he once again had a very strong game. Just five minutes in, his ball created a very good scoring opportunity for Rakitić and early in the second half he supplied a good ball to Messi, but that chance was blocked. Alves’ decision making was excellent as his choices when to attack very rarely left Barcelona shorthanded on counterattacks. Defensively he wasn’t perfect, but after Mascherano he was the most active defender on the pitch.

Gerard Pique

Minutes played: 90
Touches: 49
Passes: 38
Pass Accuracy: 74%
Tackles: 3
Interceptions: 2

Aerial Duels Won: 1

Bostjan says: 6.5

In a season where Pique mostly received high praise, this is a game in which he disappointed – like he often has in games for which he was mentally unprepared, complacent even. Too many times he left his teammates in a bad spot because he wasn’t positioned in a position in which he should’ve been. Pique did make a couple of crucial blocks, but it was far from a shutdown performance that we’ve gotten used to from the Spaniard in big games.

Javier Mascherano
6.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 59
Passes: 41
Pass Accuracy: 83%
Tackles: 9
Interceptions: 2

Aerial Duels Won: 1
Fouls: 2

Bostjan says: 7.0

This was not one of Mascherano’s best games, far from it, but I honestly think that he had a better game than Pique, even if it was the Argentine who received most of the bad press. One of Mascherano’s lowlights was when he was out-dribbled by Lewandowski for Bayern’s second, but the Argentine was often left in a bad spot because he got little to no support from his defensive partners, namely Pique and Alba, resulting in Mascherano often scrambling to get things done, leading to an insane number of defensive plays, especially tackles. Mascherano moved up to play defensive midfielder for the last 20 minutes or so where he continued to make plays, but like his teammates he too was unable "step" on the ball.

Jordi Alba
6.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 65
Passes: 54

Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 1
Interceptions: 4

Key Passes: 0
Turnovers: 1

Bostjan says: 6.5

Another quiet game from the Barcelona left-back who has not really been himself since he picked up a knock about two weeks ago. On a few plays Alba showed good speed to prevent even more danger on defense, but his contributions in attack were lacking as he rarely joined his teammates in attack. All in all a very underwhelming showing by Alba.

Sergio Busquets

Minutes played: 90

Passes: 45
Pass Accuracy: 82%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Tackles: 5
Interceptions: 7

Turnovers: 0
Aerial Duels Won: 0
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 1

A very strong defensive performance from Busquets helped make Bayern’s already difficult task just a little bit tougher. He contributed seven interceptions, the most of any Barça player and five tackles, only Mascherano made more for the Catalans, which really prevented Bayern from getting at the Barça back four. Passing wise, his success rate was a little lower than normal but this can be expected against higher class opponents.

Andres Iniesta
6.7
Minutes played: 74
Touches: 48
Passes: 41
Pass Accuracy: 85%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Turnovers: 0
Key Passes: 0
Fouls Won: 2
Interceptions: 2

Sam says: 6.5

A relatively quiet night for Iniesta in which his primary role was to keep hold of the ball rather than creating chances. With Barcelona holding a three goal advantage from the first leg, there was no need for Iniesta to continuously drive forward. Instead he sat deeper, allowing the front three space, and focused on his overall retention of the ball. He sometimes struggled with the task, especially with the skilled midfield opponents he was facing which meant a slight drop in his pass success rate but he was needed at times to soak up the Bayern pressure.

Ivan Rakitić
7.0
Minutes played: 71
Touches: 35
Passes: 30
Pass Accuracy: 87%
Shots/Shots on Target: 1/1
Fouls Won: 1
Turnovers: 2
Successful Dribbles: 0
Key Passes: 0
Clearances: 1

Sam says: 6.5

Similarly to Iniesta, Rakitic struggled at times to really have an influence in the match. He completed just 30 passes which showed how Bayern limited his role and he only made the one interception all game. But at times he did look dangerous, especially in the opening minutes when he came so close to opening the scoring. His well timed run was found by Dani Alves and it required a great save from Neuer to prevent the Croatian from opening the scoring.

Luis Suarez
8.4
Minutes played: 45
Touches: 27
Passes: 22
Pass Accuracy: 77%
Shots/Shots on Target: 0/0
Turnovers: 3
Successful Dribbles: 1
Key Passes: 2
Fouls Won: 1
Tackles: 0

Ahmed says: 8.5

Stunning in the 45 minutes that he spent on the pitch. Suarez produced a fairly simple but intelligent run and put the ball on a plate for Neymar to score his first goal of the night. He then repeated the trick with some more extremely unselfish play with another run and assist for the Barcelona number 11. The Uruguayan then bamboozled the Bayern defence again but was incorrectly adjudged to have been offside. Suarez was replaced by Pedro for precautionary reasons at half-time. Was it a mere coincidence that Barca’s poor second-half performance just happened to be with Suarez off the pitch?

Lionel Messi
8.1
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 62
Passes: 45
Pass Accuracy: 82%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/1
Fouls Won: 4
Successful Dribbles: 2
Key Passes: 0
Turnovers: 7
Tackles: 4

Ahmed says: 8.0

Slightly overshadowed by both Neymar and Suarez but still played a fundamental role for the two Barcelona goals. The Argentine dropped deeper early on in order to regain midfield control to great effect. It was his immaculate pass for the first and flying header for the second that sparked the first and second goal, respectively. Messi lost the ball too often but his passing was once again a highlight.

Neymar
8.7
Minutes played: 90
Touches: 53
Passes: 32
Pass Accuracy: 81%
Shots/Shots on Target: 2/2
Successful Dribbles: 3
Key Passes: 1
Tackles: 1
Turnovers: 8

Ahmed says: 9.0

Scored the two crucial and early away goals, thus displaying clinical finishing. Not only that, but his movement is incredibly underrated. The Brazilian was a constant threat in the first-half. Yet he suffered 8 turnovers and like the rest of the team, faded badly in the second-half. Even then, he nonetheless showed glimpses of excellence, as exemplified by that tremendous run very late in the second-half.

Pedro
6.1
Minutes played: 45
Touches: 23
Passes: 18
Pass Accuracy: 89%
Turnovers: 3

Arron says: 5.0

Replacing Luis Suarez is a difficult, nay, impossible task in this current FC Barcelona side and this was demonstrated once again on Tuesday evening as the half-time introduction of Pedro signaled the beginning of one of the most disappointing 45 minutes of Luis Enrique's reign. Well, at least in this writer's opinion anyway. Pedro may work hard, but he doesn't play "smart", at least in comparison to the Uruguayan, and Bayern made it show. Three fouls, a yellow card and not a single touch near goal; this was an evening to forget for Pedro, even if it ended positively for the Blaugrana.

Jeremy Mathieu
6.4
Minutes played: 19
Touches: 14
Passes: 11
Pass Accuracy: 64%
Tackles: 1

Arron says: 6.5

This was another defensive switch from Luis Enrique, although fortunately this one went a little more according to plan as the addition of Jeremy Mathieu to the defense added a little more height to the Barca backline as Bayern continued to feed their two target men in a bid to turn the tie around. While Mascherano's relatively small stature saw him wrong-footed by Robert Lewandowski for equaliser, Mathieu barely put a foot wrong in his time on the field and will be hoping he can do enough in the next few weeks to convince Lucho he is worthy of a starting place in the final.

Xavi
6.6
Minutes played: 16
Touches: 13
Passes: 11
Pass Accuracy: 82%
Successful Dribbles: 1

Arron says: 6.0

I thought that the introduction of Xavi to the Barcelona midfield would add a little stability and help us gain a foothold in the battle for possession. Nope, not even the Catalan maestro could help us, although I suppose the damage was already done and Barca didn't need to do anything anyway.

The Team 7.7
Passes: 510
Pass Accuracy: 80%
Shots/Shots on Target: 5/4
Tackles: 28
Aerial Battles Won: 50%
Fouls Won/Committed: 19/12

Arron says: 6.0

The first half was probably an 8 or a 9 on my scale; we responded to the early header from Mehdi Benatia to take the lead on the night courtesy of a brace from Neymar, and while Bayern had more of the ball and more of the chances, we were in the lead and posing a threat. Then along came the second-half, and yes, I know that we were through, but sheesh, what a terrible display. It was like watching a repeat of 2013, albeit with a happier ending. That place in the final is all that matters, but after seeing how poorly we are still capable of playing, I'm a little less confident of our chances now than I was before.

Luis Enrique

Arron says: 7.0

We're through, so I'm gonna stop complaining now :P

MOTM - Neymar
38%

Bostjan says: Suarez

Another close race for the Man of the Match, with only six percent separating the winner, Neymar, and second place finisher, ter Stegen. Surprisingly, Suarez didn't crack the top three, Messi finished in third with 16% of the votes.
