FC Barcelona Wins La Liga: Player Statistical Review

We take a closer look at players' stats.

Barcelona wrapped up La Liga as you surely know, and, although there is one match left for a few stats to get counted up, the Liga season is over as far as competitive matches for the Blaugrana.

Here is some illuminating statistical information.

Goals

It will surprise no one to know Lionel Messi led the way with 41 goals. Neymar was second on the list with 22 and again, to the surprise of no one, Luis Suarez rounded things off with 16 goals. For what it's worth, Diego Tristan won the Pichichi trophy in 2002 with 21 goals.

After the MSN trio, Pedro came fourth with six goals. Gerard Pique was in prime scoring form this season, bagging 5, tied with Ivan Rakitic for fifth on the team..After that, only three players contributed more than one goal. Xavi, Jeremy Mathieu and B-teamer Sandro Ramirez all scored two. Both of Mathieu's were headers off set pieces and absolutely massive (a 2-1 win against Real Madrid and a 1-0 win against Celta).

Assists

Messi led the way with 18, followed by Luis Suarez with 14. Xavi dished 8, followed by Rakitic with 7. Three players had six each: Dani Alves, Neymar, and Pedro.

Cards

Javier Mascherano was the most booked player, with 8 yellows and one red. Busquets was second, with seven yellows, tied with Dani Alves with six yellows and one red. No player received more than one red card.

Passes

The most accurate passer was actually Sergi Roberto, with a 93.5% success rate. The next-highest was Xavi at 92.7%. Jordi Alba actually played the most passes per game, followed by Mascherano. Messi had the best chance creation ratio, with 2.5 per game, followed by Suarez at 2.2. Alves averaged the most successful crosses per game, at 1.2 (though many others were mishit.) Mascherano had the most Long balls per game, with 7.  Finally, Messi led the way in through balls per game, averaging 0.9 per game

Defense

Alves put in the most tackles per game, at a 4.1 average. Interestingly, Lord Douglas was second with 3 tackles in the 1 game he played. He also led all players in interceptions per game, getting 3 in the one game he played. More relevantly, Mathieu and Marc Bartra tied for second with 2.4 per game.

Highlights

Luis Suarez scored the fastest goal of the season against Valencia at Camp Nou, scoring in the first minute. The latest goal of the season was impressively enough also scored against Valencia in the same game, by Messi. The Argentine scored at 93:05. Sergio Busquets scored against Valencia at the Mestalla at 93:04.

The first goal of the season was scored by Messi, and the one to clinch the title was of course scored by him as well. The most lopsided win this season was the 8-0 thrashing of Cordoba, while the worst loss was 3-1 vs. Real Madrid. This means that Barcelona never lost any other game by more than one goal. This is also true across all competitions.

Barcelona is also actually in the midst of the longest winning run (6 games), the longest unbeaten run (13 games), and the longest scoring run in La Liga (13 games as wll). There were two other times the team was on a 6-game winning streak, though.
