Getting to Know: Sergi Roberto

A look into Sergi Roberto's career as a football player.

Full name: Sergi Roberto Carnicer
Squad No.: 20
Position: Midfielder
Date of birth: 7 February 1992
Place of birth: Reus, Spain
Height: 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in)
Weight: 71 kg (157 lbs)

Born in Reus in the Tarragona province, the same city as famous architect Antoni Gaudí, Sergi Roberto quickly started practicing football. He took his first football steps at local CF Reus Deportiu, but later moved on to join the youth ranks of Gimnàstic de Tarragona. Roberto's stay in Tarragona was not long, it lasted only one season, as he was recruited by FC Barcelona. He joined the Cadete age group for the 2006-07 season and steadily worked his way through the ranks before reaching the top youth group, Juvenil A, in the 2008-09 season.

Roberto was promoted to Barcelona B for the 2009-10 season. He quickly became an important player in the Luis Enrique led reserve team that won a promotion to the Segunda División for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Roberto impressed so much with his play that Pep Guardiola rewarded him with his first team debut on 21 May 2011, winning performance against Malaga. Even though Roberto was a very consistent performer for the B team, he had to wait until the 2013-14 campaign before receiving a full promotion to the first team. In four seasons playing for the B team Roberto made 106 appearances, scored seven goals and assisted on two.

Since being made an official member of the first team Roberto has mostly been used as a back-up, often not even making the match-squad, but also taking part in several games as a substitute with the occasional start thrown in against lower quality teams. In appearances spanning five seasons Roberto has taken part in 55 games for the first team. In them he scored four goals and assisted on another three.

Roberto's international career took off in 2008, when he debuted for Spain U-17. In 2009 he would play a crucial part in helping Spain secure a third-place finish in the U-17 World Cup, scoring three goals in the tournament. Roberto went on to be capped at the U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels, altogether accumulating 39 under-age caps and scoring six goals. As a Catalan, Roberto is also eligible for the Catalan national team and has taken part in four Catalonia matches.

Profile

Roberto is a typical La Masia midfielder - good with the ball at his feet and excellent vision of the pitch. He is most often deployed deeper, either as a box-to-box midfielder or as a defensive midfielder, but is adept at dictating play, though he lacks a scoring touch. A very intelligent player blessed with quick feet that does not shy away from a physical challenge.
