Getting to Know: Douglas

A look into Douglas' career as a football player.

Full name: Douglas Pereira dos Santos
Squad No: 16
Position: Right-back
Date of birth: 6 August 1990
Place of birth: Monte Alegre de Goiás, Brazil
Height: 1.71 m (5 ft 8 in)
Weight: 67 kg (148 lbs)

Born in Monte Alegre de Goiás, Brazil, Douglas started his footballing career at the age of twelve when he joined the youth ranks of Goiás Esporte Clube, located in the largest city in the state, Goiás, approximately 350 miles (570 kilometers) from his home. Douglas spent the next seven seasons working his way through the youth teams, before reaching the first team in 2009. He made his professional debut on 20 June 2009, but the youngster spent the first season as a backup to the experienced Vítor.

After Vítor's departure the following year, Douglas became the first choice right-back for the Esmeraldino, but his team was quickly relegated. Altogether Douglas spent three season at Goiás, the first two in the Série A, the third in the Série B, appearing in 78 games, scoring five goals, all five in his final season with the club, and assisted on another five.

In February 2012, Douglas signed a contract with the most successful club in Brazil, São Paulo. The right-back quickly claimed a place in the starting eleven. While Douglas' performances were largely mixed he was able to maintain a place in the starting lineup. Like at Goiás, Douglas spent three season with São Paulo. But this time he took part in 124 games, scored six goals and added seven assists.

In August 2014, Barcelona made a €4million offer for the São Paulo player, an offer that could increase by €1.5 million depending on Douglas' performances. Still young at the time of his transfer, especially for a defender, 24 years and 20 days old, Douglas was viewed as a future investment by the Barcelona board that would slowly be worked into the team - but that has proved to be a very slow process. He made his Barcelona debut on 25 September 2014 in La Liga against Malaga. Since his transfer to the Catalan capital, Douglas has only made five appearances, but he was able to help his team with an assist.

On the international stage Douglas has so far featured only at the U-20 level where he took part in 12 games and helped his national team reach the final stages of the South American U-20 Championship and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, winning the former.

Profile

Douglas is a right-footed right-back that is also capable of playing as the right side midfielder or a right winger. He is very capable when it comes to the attacking aspects of the game, but his game is lacking when it comes to defense, where he isn't enough positionally sound to consistently make plays. While his offense needs to be nurtured it will be his defensive development that will determine if he will be able to make it at the biggest stage.
