Barcelona sporting director confirms interest in Inter Milan midfielder

Ariedo Braida, head of Barcelona’s sporting commission, gave an interview this week in which he updated the status of Barça in terms of players they could be looking for on the market once the transfer ban is over next January, and the Blaugrana are finally able to bring new additions to the current squad.

The Italian executive confirmed that despite being banned from signing anyone in 2015, "nothing can stop us making verbal agreements with a view to January". One of those agreements is close to being made to Ilkay Gundogan, sources told Barça Blaugranes. But another midfield transfer target was mentioned in the interview, and Braida did not deny the interest he has on Mateo Kovacic, the 21-year-old Inter Milan talent:

"For the moment I can’t talk about it because there’s nothing concrete, but of course I can’t deny that we like the player and that he has quality."

The rumors regarding Kovacic to Barcelona have been discussed for a while, but it seems now that the club is really keen on signing the young Croatian, who’s a teammate of Ivan Rakitic, current Blaugrana, on the national team level. Kovacic has impressed Barça scouts with his passing ability and physical capabilities, and he is strongly considered as an alternative to Gundogan, who’s the primary transfer target for January.

While Braida said what he should say, we can confirm that there are ongoing conversations between the team and the player about his interest. If he initially agrees with a move to Camp Nou, then Barça plans to move on to more serious talks with Internazionale to reach a transfer agreement.

What do you think, Culés? Is Kovacic a good addition to the squad?
