Another topic worth mentioning coming out of Ariedo Braida’s interview, in which he revealed interest in Mateo Kovacic, the head of Barcelona’s sporting commission talked about the future of his current squad, more specifically, the fourth member of Barça’s front-line.
It has been well documented that Pedro Rodríguez has not had an easy season as the backup to the trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar Jr. While the ‘MSN’ has destroyed Europe, scoring an astonishing 114 goals this campaign, ‘Pedrito’ has been left in the shadows of the triumvirate’s greatness, getting the fewest starts in his Blaugrana career, and generating all sorts of rumors and speculation on whether or not he would accept this situation and stay with Barça until the end of his current contract, next summer.
The Premier League has jumped all over the issue, and teams like Liverpool and Arsenal have been repeatedly mentioned as potential buyers of the 27-year-old striker if he indeed says he doesn’t want to be at Camp Nou anymore. But according to Braida, that possibility does not exist. Pedrito’s staying.
"Pedro is and will continue to be a Barcelona player. He is a very important player for us. He has a contract and will continue at the Camp Nou, especially taking into account our transfer ban."
This is a strong and trust-worthy quote from the Transfer Master. And, if you add the fact that Pedro has been used a lot more lately, and that he could start the La Liga title-clincher against Atlético Madrid on Sunday due to Luis Suárez being injured, there is a tremendous case to be made that Luis Enrique trusts Pedro more than ever, and is involving the guy even more in the most important part of the season.
Say what you want about Pedro, but he stays ready and he endures a tough football situation and accepts an important role as a backup even though he’s still on his prime. Kudos to him, and let’s hope that he stays for a lot more time.
