Barcelona's Road to The Copa del Rey Final Against Athletic Bilbao

We take a look at how Barcelona got to the final

The Blaugrana are ready to face Athletic Club in the final. Luis Suarez is said to be near or at full fitness and the team is ready to fight for the cup - yes, even Vermaelen is fit.

Here's a look back at how Barça got this far.

Round of 32

Barcelona entered the competition along with all other Primera clubs in the Round of 32. The opponent was SD Huesca, a third tier club. Barcelona won the away match easily, 4-0, with goals from Ivan Rakitic, Andres Iniesta, Pedro, and Rafinha.

In the return leg, Barça were in full party mode, winning 8-1 to make the aggregate 12-1. Pedro scored a hat trick, and Iniesta, Sergi Roberto, Adriano, Adama Traore, and Sandro Ramirez all were on the board too. Carlos David got a late consolation goal for Huesca.

Notably, that was Adama's first goal for the senior team.

Round of 16

Barcelona faced another Primera club in the next round: Elche. However, the Valencian team did not present much of a problem, either. Barcelona won the first match 5-0 with goals from Neymar (2x), Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Jordi Alba.

The return leg was plain sailing, too. Barcelona recorded a 4-0 victory with goals from Jeremy Mathieu, Roberto, Pedro, and Adriano.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Real Madrid had fallen to Atletico Madrid...

Quarter-finals

A much sterner test for the Blaugrana awaited as they faced Atleti. The first leg was a taut affair, and Atleti nearly got away from Camp Nou with a 0-0 draw. Sergio Busquets was fouled in the box 5 minutes from time, however, giving Messi an opportunity from the spot. Messi's initial shot was saved, but he slotted in the rebound to give Barcelona an important result, 1-0.

The return leg was brilliant. Fernando Torres did his thing, fooling Javier Mascherano and scoring in about 40 seconds to put the sides level on aggregate. But Barcelona responded with a blistering counter attack. Messi receiving the ball behind the halfway line, nutmegging a player, scooping it to Suarez, who sprung Neymar free. The Brazillian didn't miss and put Barcelona back on top, 2-1 on aggregate.

Atletico were given a generous penalty for a foul Javier Mascherano seemed to have committed outside the box. Even at 2-1 down in the game, the Blaugrana lead on away goals, but they would not be satisfied. First, Miranda would fluff a clearance into his own net to make it 2-2 in the match and 3-2 in the tie.

Then, again Messi would be the architect, this time finding a flying Jordi Alba, who would cross to Neymar. Neymar would slip past the keeper and tap in the final score, which would make it 4-2 on aggregate.

Semifinals

Barcelona's fine form would continue into the semis, first registering a 3-1 win over Villarreal at the Camp Nou. Suarez would rob a ball high up the pitch and tee up Messi to open the scoring, though Trigueros would equalize at 1-1 with a long range effort that Marc Andre Ter Stegen would bundle into the net.

Again Barcelona responded to an opposition goal, Iniesta combining over and over with Neymar until el Ilusionista drifted a shot past Villarreal's keeper to make it 2-1. Gerard Pique would add another, this time by meeting a corner kick and placing it wonderfully to make it 3-1.

In the second leg, Messi would work a brilliant assist to Neymar to put the aggregate score at 4-1. Ex Barcelona player Jonathan Dos Santos would get some measure of revenge, turning in a cross past Ter Stegen to make it 4-2, but any hope for a comeback was dashed as Pina was sent off for a very harsh two-footed lunge on Neymar.

Suarez would further Villarreal's pain, bypassing keeper Sergio Asenjo and smashing the ball into the net to make it 5-2. Neymar would complete the rout, this time scoring with his head from close range to make it 6-2.
