Xavi Hernandez to call press conference; will announce Barcelona departure

Unless something crazy happens, a legend’s era is coming to an end.

According to widespread reports from Spain, Xavi Hernández, Barcelona’s midfield icon and primary team captain, will call for a press conference on Thursday in which he is expected to announce his departure from the Catalan club. Xavi has offers from Qatar and MLS teams, and he is expected to make his new club official on the same conference.

The story of Xavi’s departure has been told for over a year. After the meltdown in the 2014 World Cup, the Catalan was reportedly keen on leaving the club last summer, but after a conversation with Luis Enrique, who had just been announced as the new manager, the captain understood and accepted what his role would look like, so he decided to stick around for one more season to help Lucho as his former teammate adapted and transitioned to the new club.

Xavi’s presence was vital this season as captain off the pitch, especially during the tough times Enrique and Lionel Messi went through in January. But he was also important inside the lines, as the 35-year-old appeared in 30 of the 37 league matches so far, plus nine of the twelve Champions League games the Blaugrana played this season. He can leave the club as perfectly as possible, since he could end his Barcelona career as a treble winner.

Doesn’t matter how his season ends, though, he’ll be a legend forever. No words can describe how much we love you, Xavi. Thank you.
