This may make it possible to finish out European leagues’ seasons
UEFA has officially delayed the 2020 European Championship for one year due to the coronavirus crisis. The tournament was to be held between June and July across 12 countries.
It will instead take place during the same dates next year, allowing the summer to be used for leagues to finish their current seasons. For example, La Liga, which is currently suspended, could resume. That would allow a chance for Barcelona to retain their first place through regular means, on the pitch, rather than forcing a conclusion through bureaucratic means.
Barcelona has plenty of players expected to compete in the Euros, including players from Spain, France, Portugal, Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
In addition, Copa América is expected to also be postponed. This would affect players from Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile who are employed by Barcelona.
Aside from domestic leagues, continental tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and Europa League will have a chance to be completed, should the crisis improve.
UEFA is also expected to release the plans for finishing the Champions and Europa Leagues soon, which have been rumored to include playing one-legged rather than two-legged stages.
There could still be a scheduling conflict with the women’s European Championship, which takes place between July and August of next year. Although at least that does not involve the same players.
