Football will only resume when it is safe

La Liga and the Spanish FA confirmed on Monday that all professional football in Spain has been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The league will now wait for advice from the Spanish government before deciding when it is safe for football in the country to resume.

Here’s the official statement:

“The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement AGREES the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk.

“Both the RFEF and LaLiga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people and also share our condolences for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of soccer to the many families that are losing loved ones.”

Spain has been in lockdown since the middle of March due to the pandemic and that is set to be extended until April 11 in a bid to help contain the outbreak.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has previously said he’s confident the season can be completed but it’s still unclear if that will be possible.
