Mestre and Puyol Weigh in on Piqué’s Involvement in Griezmann Saga

Differing opinions over Piqué

Barcelona VP Jordi Mestre and former captain Carles Puyol have spoken out on Gerard Piqué’s involvement in the Antoine Griezmann saga, with the two strikingly different tones.

Griezmann revealed his decision not to join Barcelona and stay at Atlético Madrid in a TV special produced by Piqué’s company. The defender promoted the special on social media. His fellow centerback, Samuel Umtiti, also tweeted he was getting his popcorn ready to watch the documentary. Umtiti is also friends with Griezmann from their time in the French national team.

“The president has spoken with Piqué to let him know there is surprise and discomfort for his participation in the Griezmann saga,” Mestre said. “We will speak, in an internal manner, with him and with Umtiti when they return from their vacation.”

Puyol, while admitting he did not know if people were upset with his former teammate, insisted that he did not see anything wrong with it.

“In the end,” he said, “Piqué is not responsible for the decision Griezmann took. That he has a production company and that company made the documentary, I don’t see that in a negative light.”

“Many people can think that it was Piqué who influenced it, but no way,” Puyol said. “The decision was made by Griezmann, and it’s a decision too important for another person from the outside to influence.”
