Brazil 1-1 Switzerland: Upset

Another World Cup favorite could not show their strength

The final match of Day 4 of the World Cup saw the opening match for one of the favorites, and Brazil were unable to start their journey with three point as they drew 1-1 against Switzerland in Rostov. Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho represented Barcelona and the Little Magician scored an incredible goal, but the Seleção allowed the Swiss to equalize and now Brazil must win their final two group games to advance.

FIRST HALF

Brazil were the better team from the very start, dominating midfield thanks to excellent showings by Casemiro and Philippe Coutinho, who along with Neymar and Marcelo formed a quartet on the left side that was the source of everything Brazil did well. The Swiss defense is solid and organized, so despite their dominance Brazil couldn’t quite find an opening.

Until Coutinho pulled off a Coutinho special, and masterful shot from the left side just outside the box that curled beautifully into the top corner on the other side. The Canarinho had the lead and it seemed like they were ready to score more, but Switzerland recovered quickly and managed to stop the bleeding.

At halftime, Brazil were clearly the best side on the pitch but they needed to score another goal or two to confirm the win and have more to show for their dominance.

SECOND HALF

Football is beautiful because things change quickly, and it did in this game when Steven Zuber headed home the equalizer for Switzerland just four minutes into the second half, and Brazil were clearly nervous as they searched for a winning goal. Brazil went from nervous to desperate, and it didn’t help that Gabriel Jesus was denied a clear penalty and VAR once again did not intervene in their favor.

The final few minutes were a siege as Brazil owned the final third and created chance after chance after chance, but they just could not find the winner despite the efforts. The Swiss celebrated the result like a win, and they should. Brazil must get better to win their next game, and A LOT better to win the tournament.
