Judgement day is upon us; well, kind of. All things being equal, this might just be one of FC Barcelona's most important matches of the season to date, although there is a suggestion that this is just the beginning. A crucial, possibly La Liga deciding El Clasico clash with Real Madrid beckons for instance, while the Blaugrana will also have designs on competing with the very best in the latter stages of the UEFA Champions League. In that sense, this could well be a defining moment of our season under Luis Enrique: do we have what it takes to pass this first test?
If we don't, the sad truth is that the final stages of the season are likely to become a depressing affair; that's not to say that losing to Villarreal is inexcusable, merely that a team with eyes on lifting a trophy, or two, or even three cannot afford to let a two goal aggregate lead slip away, even away from home at El Madrigal.
Thankfully, there is little reason to suggest that an improbable comeback is on the cards; you'd have to venture back in time to April 2007 to find the last instance in which Villarreal defeated Barcelona by two goals and while they have performed admirably against Barca and Real Madrid this season, they've only succeeded in making our lives difficult, rather than out-playing us outright.
A calm, professional performance should see the Blaugrana safely through to the final where a potential clash with usual Copa del Rey final opposition, Athletic Bilbao may await. Or, maybe a Catalan derby could be on the cards against Espanyol. Either way, Barca need to get the job done tonight -- will they manage it?
