Barcelona can't fail at Eibar

FC Barcelona play SD Eibar on Saturday at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium. It could be a possible loss if the team doesn’t give maximum effort.

This game is one that has bothered me since the beginning of the season. Barça play Eibar in La Liga away right before the Clasico; a crucial game accompanied by a crucial three points. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will be hoping for a Barça loss, and the opposite will be true with our own fans. Truth be told, I don’t know why the thought of playing this small team bothers me so much, it just has this eerie feeling to it. It sound like a classic story of heroism: A new club, just promoted to the Primera division for the first time in their history, face off against the mighty Barcelona, only to win; the story of the underdog. The fact remains that Barça simply cannot afford to lose if we wish to win the league, and SD Eibar will provide a stiff challenge.

Make no mistake, Eibar may be a small team, but their heart, will, and desire dwarfs that of many teams in the first division. Not particularly known for their technique and tactical ability, Eibar’s players are physical, rough, and not afraid to shoot from outside the box. A team with nothing to lose playing in front of their home fans, Eibar could prove to be a costly speed bump.

The Pitch

If there was ever a time to worry about the condition of the pitch, it would be now. Just look the condition of that thing, my back yard is in better condition:

Suspensions/injuries

If the pitch isn’t enough to cause concern, then perhaps this will. Sergio Busquets, Barça’s starting defensive midfielder is currently injured. Sergio picked up what looked to be serious injury against Villarreal, after Thomas Pina stamped down on his ankle. After a while Busi was back on the bench to enjoy the rest of the game. It was not all good news though; he will be forced to miss 3 weeks, including the Clasico.

Two more players will be suspended for the game against the Basque minnows, in the shape of Dani Alves and Jordi Alba. Both starting fullbacks will be absent due to the accumulation of too many yellow cards, giving Montoya and Adriano the chance to start.

Either way, this will be a tough match. I expect Barca to be victorious, and then move onto the Champions League to play Manchester City.
