Frenkie de Jong is set for a key role

New manager Ronald Koeman looks set to tweak Barcelona’s formation next season as he is reportedly planning to use a double pivot at the Camp Nou.

Koeman wants to give Frenkie de Jong a more influential role at the club, and he’s likely to play alongside either Sergio Busquets or Miralem Pjanic, according to Mundo Deportivo.

It’s a system Koeman has used with success for Netherlands, while De Jong has played that role for the national team and for Ajax.

Koeman has recently spoken to NOS about how he wants De Jong more involved.

“The plan is to start playing Frenkie de Jong in the position that he plays with the national team as well. You’ve spent a lot of money on a young player. You should then play him in his own position, where he can perform in a way you’d expect from him

“He’s shown at Ajax and with the Dutch national team which position suits him best and that’s where he will be playing at Barcelona as well. There’s stiff competition for that role, so he will have to be in great shape and form. But it will be in a position that suits him.”

Sport are also reporting on Koeman’s tactics for next season and think he could play 4-2-3-1 with Pjanic the man to feature with De Jong.

Their report also thinks Koeman’s tinkering could be good news for Riqui Puig who could also be in Koeman’s starting XI in 2020-21. The double pivot system would mean less defensive responsibility for Puig which could allow the youngster’s creativity to flourish.

Barcelona’s first team players are due to start pre-season training in a week’s time.
