Barcelona give up hope of signing De Jong - report

Manchester City are confident of landing the Dutchman

Barcelona have reportedly “all but given up hope” of landing Frenkie de Jong, as Manchester City are set to pay €70 million plus €20m in bonuses for the midfielder.

According to Goal’s Sam Lee, City feel they’re in pole position and have been talking to the Dutch star for months.

They are hoping to do a deal for the 21-year-old in the next few months. They will loan him back to Ajax for the rest of the season, and he’ll then move to the Etihad Stadium next summer.

The report reckons Barca have pretty much given up hope of signing De Jong, as they are unwilling to match City’s offer. They feel the only way they can sign the youngster is if he insists on a move to the Camp Nou to play with Lionel Messi.

De Jong said back in September that he’d like to play with Messi “one day”, he’s also recently been talking about how he loves watching videos of Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

There’s no doubt De Jong is in huge demand at the moment. Real Madrid and PSG have also been credited with an interest and Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has admitted it will be tough to keep hold of his top stars.

Ajax will therefore probably enjoy it if a bidding war was to break out for their young star, with Manchester City seemingly willing to break their transfer record to snap up De Jong.
