The Barcelona star has to quarantine

Barcelona winger Francisco Trincao has confirmed he will have to miss the Under-21 Euros this summer because he is having to quarantine after having been in contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.

The 21-year-old was named in the original Portugal squad for the tournament but will now have to watch his team from the sidelines.

Here’s what he’s had to say:

“Although I tested negative for Covid-19, but because I was in contact with a colleague who tested positive, I find myself obliged, according to the instructions of the health authorities, to comply with a quarantine period and therefore unfortunately I will not be able to represent my country in the U21 European Championship, but my colleagues’ confidence in the work is limitless! Come on, Portugal!”

Portugal play Italy in the quarter-finals on May 31 and the winners will go on to face either Spain or Croatia for a place in the final.

Trincao’s absence is more disappointment for the youngster who has struggled to make much of an impact at Barcelona this season following his €31 million move from Braga. The 21-year-old only made three La Liga starts and spent most of his time on the bench.

The Barca forward may find game time even harder to come by next season with Ansu Fati hopefully back to full fitness and with Memphis Depay tipped to arrive at the Camp Nou on a free transfer.
