A strongly-worded statement has been released

Barcelona have hit back at UEFA in a statement released on Wednesday in the wake of Europe’s governing body opening proceedings against the Catalans, Juventus, and Real Madrid for their involvement in the proposed Super League.

There’s speculation the three clubs could all be banned from the Champions League as punishment for refusing to pull out of the seemingly doomed new project. The other nine clubs originally involved have already announced plans to quit.

It’s a strongly-worded statement that highlights the three clubs’ “absolute rejection of the insistent coercion that UEFA has been maintaining towards three of the most relevant institutions in the history of football.”

The statement then goes on to talk about the “alarming attitude” shown by UEFA which is a “flagrant breach of the decision of the courts of justice.” Barca also describe the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the three clubs as “incomprehensible.”

The Catalan giants reckon that “the Super League has been promoted with the aim of improving the situation of European football” and that also the objective is “to increase the interest in the sport and to offer fans the best possible show.”

Barca also talk about the “urgent solutions that football currently needs” in order to explore way to modernize football. The statement finishes off with “either we reform football or we will have to watch its inevitable downfall.”

The whole statement is available here.
