Barcelona and Manchester City were close to a deal

Barcelona missed out on Eric Garcia in the summer transfer window due to some haggling over the transfer fee with Manchester City, according to new reporting. The defender is still wanted by the Catalans, who are currently without Gerard Piqué due to a long-term injury.

City offered to Garcia for a price of 10 million euros, plus an additional 10 in bonuses, but Barcelona said no. Then, on the final night before the transfer window was shut, the blaugrana made one final counteroffer: 10 million plus up to 8 million in bonuses, 3 of which were said to be paid out if Barcelona won the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the apparently small difference in the two proposals, City said no. It seems the English club had already told the defender he was going to stay, and they considered it too late to accept the 11th hour proposal.

Oscar Grau negotiated on the part of Barcelona with Manchester City’s Txiki Begiristain (former Barcelona player) and Ferran Soriano (a Barcelona native.) The initial price was set by City at 15 million plus 5 in bonuses, to which Barcelona countered by offering 10 million plus 5. However, Garcia’s insistence no running down his contract made City lower the asking price, although apparently not to the extent Barcelona wanted.

There is concern that Barcelona will not be able to sign Garcia this winter transfer window if City consider it too late to re-open talks after how the last ones broke down.
