This was supremely terrible.

Barcelona’s inconsistency in La Liga conitnues and the Blaugrana are now nine points behind Atlético Madrid thanks to a 1-0 loss at the Wanda Metropolitano. Barça played really badly for the entire match and finished it with 10 men even though Ronald Koeman had a fifth substitution to make, and Atleti scored a bizarre winner thanks to a bad mistake by one of the world’s best goalkeepers. This was AWFUL. Truly awful.

FIRST HALF

The start of the game was a wild, back-and-forth 15 minutes of both teams running really hard at each other and creating good chances. Saúl Ñíguez forced a great save out of Marc-André ter Stegen, Antoine Griezmann fired a shot over the bar and Marcos Llorente hit the woodwork to start what looked like a very entertaing game.

But as time went on the match settled into Barça having more of the ball while Atleti played a back five and defended deep inside their box, and the Blaugrana struggled to find any spaces except for one brilliant pass by Jordi Alba to find Lionel Messi all alone inside the box, only for the captain to waste a very good chance with a weak shot right at Jan Oblak.

There were many fouls and bookings in the final minutes, and we looked destined for a goalless first half. Until Ter Stegen made a bad mistake trying to play sweeper keeper and Yannick Carrasco scored a rare tap-in from 40 yards to give his team the lead.

At halftime, a physical game without many chances had the hosts in front thanks to an individual error, and things still looked wide open ahead of the final period.

SECOND HALF

Barça were very slow to start the second half and Atleti looked pretty comfortable as the Blaugrana couldn’t create at all. Clément Lenglet had two headers stopped by Jan Oblak, Miralem Pjanic and Ousmane Dembélé fired some weak shots from distance, and as we reach the final 20 minutes it looked like Barça were not going to make a comeback. To add injury to insult, Gerard Piqué had to leave with what looked like a bad knee injury.

As time went on and desperation grew Barça looked more and more inept to break down the Atleti defense, and substitutions didn’t fix it either. The final whistle came to end a horrible performance from Barcelona, and the quicker we move on from this the better.
