Barcelona 2-2 Girona: Pique to the rescue

Clement Lenglet was sent off for the hosts

Barcelona dropped their first points of the season after an exciting 2-2 draw against Girona at the Camp Nou on Sunday. It was a tough old test with Barca having to play with 10 men for a large part of the game after Clement Lenglet was sent off. They also had to come from behind to rescue a point, but they remain top of the table and unbeaten after five matches.

FIRST HALF

Barcelona started off pretty well and almost went ahead early on when Messi went past a couple of defenders and fired a shot which a diving Bono just managed to tip around the post.

The goal was coming though and it eventually arrived after 19 minutes. Arturo Vidal did really well to lay the ball off to his captain who slid it home first time with a superb finish.

Barcelona were in control but it all started to go wrong when Clement Lenglet was sent off. The defender caught Pere Pons with his forearm and after a VAR check he received his marching orders.

Girona then took advantage of some pretty slack defending to haul themselves level just before half-time. Cristhian Stuani went past Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique before nicking it past Ter Stegen.

SECOND HALF

Valverde made a change at the break with Ousmane Dembele the one to make way with Samuel Umtiti coming on in his place.

However, the Camp Nou was stunned within seven minutes of the restart when Stuani grabbed his second of the night. The ball fell to the striker after Ter Stegen had saved from Portu and he lashed Girona into the lead.

Valverde responded by throwing on Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic and within a minute Messi had hit the crossbar with a free-kick. Barcelona kept going and were rewarded when Gerard Pique leapt highest to head home after Bono has blocked an effort from Luis Suarez.

Barca tried hard to force a winner in the closing stages. Messi had a couple of free-kicks, Coutinho tried his luck with a couple of shots but it simply didn’t happen, and Barcelona’s perfect start to the season is over.
