After a week of games, this tournament is even more wide open that we thought.
First of all, thank you to Uruguay and Japan. After seven days of three-minute VAR reviews and boring games, we finally had a truly great match in the 2019 Copa America. Four goals, 41 shots, two teams who wanted to win all the time, bold substitutions from both coaches, and the highest entertainment level we’ve seen so far.
That said, many expected Uruguay to build upon their opening victory and show their strength against a Japan side that looked hopeless in their first game. But the mighty Celeste defense was easily picked apart by the pace of the Japanese counter attack, their midfield showed little creativity in the second half, and both Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez weren’t as precise as usual in front of goal.
So between Brazil’s poor attacking play, Argentina’s WTF football and Uruguay’s inconsistent start, we just don’t know right now if the three favorites are actually good enough to win this thing. Only Colombia and Chile (just one match) have looked organized and good at all phases of the game so far, but the lesser talent in both squads may hurt their chances if the favorites improve. So yeah, who knows?
This specific Copa América was wide open from its very beginning, but seven days of action made that even more clear. And that’s why this tournament is about to get really fun.

Japan looked amazing on the counter all night against Uruguay, and the opening goal was the best example. A sensational pass from Gaku Shibasaki, and what a great finish by Koji Miyoshi with his weaker right foot (US only):
